This year it has been a surprise to see that the top growth bull who indexed No 1 in both weaning and yearling weight Lot 36 is sired by a SimAngus bull we raised – GCCR Cookie Bull. The dam of Lot 36 is a SimAngus also raised here. We think this a testament to the quality of the cow herd behind these bulls. From the time we started to develop this registered Simmental and SimAngus herd we have embraced the tools of superior genetics and the use of “THE” the Simmental cow productivity program in order to move forward. As usual, there are different types and styles of bulls so as to fit what your program needs.All of the nulls will be stouter and more rugged than what you commonly see.These bulls do not have to be 2 years old to breed cows. We use our own yearling bulls on cows as do our customers and have no problems.These bulls will not fall apart or melt and can travel big or rough pastures.This is our experience and what our customers are telling us.The sale bulls will weigh 1,200# to 1,400# on sale day with several in the 1,500# range. Heifer Development Heifers received no creep prior to weaning. After weaning they were on a Purina development program and then moved to a cube and hay ration. They have been in a small pasture. The Sale Heifers will be brought to our hose and penned before the sale.

Cash. Animals sold to highest bidder. Announcements at sale block take precedence.
GCCR will board any bulls not taken at the sale free until April 30th. We will work out a schedule for delivery beginning in April. Please let the clerks at the Sale know the day of the Sale If you are taking the bulls or if you want us to deliver, It works best if you can take the heifers Sale day or soon after, We bring the bulls and heifers home immediately after the Sale so that we are taking care of them. The bulls are moved to a large lot and fed a ration to harden them for breeding but keep them in good condition.

All animals are raised from registered Simmental and Angus unless otherwise noted. All bulls and females have been BVD-PI tested.

In appreciation for your business we will give a discount of 5% if you purchase 5 or more bulls or purchase a gross total of $10,000 (not to exceed a total discount of 5%)
Ultrasound will be done in February and will be posted on our website and available Sale Day. Actual weights will be taken shortly before the sale and a breeding soundness exam and fertility test will be done by Dr. Lex Thompson. Genetic testing and color testing will be done in February so that it will be ready by the 1st of March.
Cattle Viewing Bulls will be at the Auction Market on Thursday, March 15, the heifers will come in early Friday, March 16 or come by and visit at home before the sale.

The American Simmental Association and the American Red Angus Association have become partners for the purpose of EPD calculation. In order to make it easier for the customers, they have agreed to work on the same base, so this summer, watch for the EPDs to be on a new base. The only thing you have to think about is to remember to look at the EPD averages to be able to compare the EPDs of each animal to the new average. It will not change the spread between any bulls or the meaning of each EPD. The base number will just be different for each trait. It will actually make it easier to compare animals across breeds. Compare GCCR cattle EPDs to the Simmental breed average not the Angus which are different.
tj easy money 101W This is our first and the largest group of Easy sons to sell. He consistently stamps his calves with length and muscle in a moderate frame. You will see how much his calves look alike. He also sires a quiet and calm disposition. His sons grew right with the larger framed power bulls through weaning then slowed down in their yearling weight with a more moderate frame.

Out of one our very best Angus cows, a War Alliance from Vision Angus who has never missed having an AI calf.
MATERNAL We use genetics high in maternal traits such as milk and good udders. Then we have Dr. Lex Thompson do a prebreeding exam and pelvic measure all of our replacement heifers each year. That way we can identify genetics with small pelvic and/or other breeding problems and eliminate them. GCCR sired genetics have added maternal value for you if you want to retain females or gives you another marketing option if you want to sell replacement females.

wheatland bull When researching Simmental genetics to bring in for proven performance the Northern breeders pointed us toward this bull. Canadian Sales were averaging $9000-$15000 for his sons and his progeny were also winning in the shows . He packs tremendous internal dimension, stoutness, bone, depth of body with a butt in a 6 frame. Growth, disposition, and yes they have more hair. Erika Kenner secured some of the last semen for us as he is no longer available. We brought him in on proven calving ease females and had absolutely no problems

Check out this bull! Internal dimension PLUS! He has trouble getting through the chute. One visitor commented that he was the stoutest bull he had ever seen. EPDs are excellent VERY TAME. Purebred breeders take a look. One of the last Wheatland Bull sons out there. We should keep him but we brought in a Wheatland Bull son for a herd bull from Joe Bata last year.

DISPOSITION Good disposition is a No.1 requirement around here. We use genetics known for docility and eliminate any animal at any stage if they are nervous or difficult to work with. The cattle are accustomed to people, 4 wheelers and horses. Studies continue to show that quiet cattle gain better and are more feed efficient. Besides the positive economic value of good disposition we just do not want the extra wear and tear on equipment, facilities and people that cattle with poor disposition bring.

We have little control over our weather and markets buts we can control the genetics we use. Both the Simmental and Angus breeds have developed and implemented new technology which enables breeders to make significant strides in measuring and evaluating seedstock and thus making great progress. It would be much cheaper and easier to not register out cattle and not implement all the new technology. For those of us who go to the time, expense and work of registering these animals with the respective associations we are able to be on the cutting edge of progress and believe this investment will pay off for our customers. You will get a registration paper that tells you who you are getting, performance records, and comparisons on a national basis with other cattle. Unfortunately it is easy and cheap to raise backyard “crossbred” bulls so those bulls are out there on the market. In our opinion, they are a great detriment to the SimAngus business because they are putting out unknown and sometimes poor quality genetics under the promise of heterosis.

gccr cookies bonus “CB” is a herdbull that we retained out of our TJ Bonus Beef herdsire who sired our top selling bull last year. CB’s dam is Cookie who was a show heifer for our grandson, Grant. She has tremendous phenotype, performance genetics and the best disposition. We had many offers for CB because of his width across the top, depth of rib and smooth attractive appearance. This was our first crop of his calves and they all flat out grew. They have the same smooth attractive look as CB. CB sired the top weaning weight and yearling weight growth bull in the offering (Lot 36) competing with the top AI sired Simmental and Angus bulls.

The only purebred Angus on the Sale and one of the better bulls. We actually had an Angus breeder comment that he was one of the better In Focus sons he had seen. This bull is out of a 1st calf heifer with a picture perfect VRD granddam. He is moderate, thick and deep and grew right with our Simmentals. In our experience it is hard to find that low of a birth weight with that much performance and phenotype and when you do find them they are expensive. He will be a good value.

CALVING EASE Early on we worked on reducing birth weight and improving calving ease. Because of our commitment to calving ease we cull and send to the feedlot any upper 90# and 100# plus birthweight bulls. Our bulls are bred primarily for use on cows and will be calving ease on cows. Occasionally we may have one bull or a few who could be used on heifer with discretion but ask us and we will guide you right. If you want heifer project bulls where there is no supervision, you may want to go down the road to an Angus breeder who has little Angus.

HEIFERS It is hard to part with heifers anytime but especially when the cattle market looks so positive for the future. Here is your opportunity. Out of 150 plus registered females, GCCR sold the bottom 50 heifers in January as market calves and we are retaining roughly the top 100 as replacement heifers. Here are 15 out of our replacement heifers who offer a wide range of possibilities. All will make functional cows and some could make fancy show cattle or mamas of bulls. It just depends how you want to use and breed them. The Grandmaster breeding won Grand Champion female at the Denver Stock Show and sold high. All females have been through a complete vaccination program. A veterinary check for breeding soundness will be done with pelvic measurements and final weights available Sale day.

QUICK GUIDE to ASA EPDs and $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
