Kansas Angus Association The President’ s Pen Dear Kansas Angus Breeders, Wow! What a February that was! Two huge winter blasts right in the middle of calving. I do hope that everyone came through these storms alright. Now that March is upon us we have warmer temperatures, spring production sales and green grass to look forward too. I am planning on attending as many productions sales as I can this spring and hope to see many fellow Angus breeders there as well.

The NW Missouri boys did it again ®

Congratulations to John Osborn, the winner of the 2010 AngusSource Carcass Challenge. John’s 3rd quarter pen of heifers topped the northeast region with the highest quality grades ever seen in a National Angus Carcass Contest. John’s pen went 100% CAB® brand and CAB® Prime, with 45% of the pen hitting the Prime upper deck in grade. This was his second load of 100% CAB® and Prime calves harvested this year. He also had four other entries in the 3rd quarter that exceeded 90% CAB® and Prime. This is John’s second year wining the AngusSource® Carcass Challenge with record breaking results. ANGUS INDUSTRY Angus Releases Genomic-enhanced Growth EPDs Association®

(AGI®)

The American Angus and Angus Genetics Inc. continue to expand their offering of genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (EPDs), the cattle industry’s latest and most accurate genetic selection tools. Beginning today, genomic-enhanced EPDs incorporating the IGENITY® Profile for Angus are available for several growth traits including birth, weaning and yearling weight EPDs; as well as milk EPDs. The selection tools are generated using the Association’s extensive growth database and genomic results from the IGENITY Angus-specific profile. Growth EPDs now join other genomic-enhanced EPDs offered through the Association, including: carcass traits, docility and residual average daily gain (RADG). “This was the next logical step in our efforts to further incorporate genomic data into our extensive selection tools,” says Bill Bowman, AGI president and Association chief operating officer (COO). “We continue to work toward utilizing genomic data in additional EPDs to benefit our members and their commercial customers.” Sally Northcutt, Association director of genetic research, says genomic-enhanced EPDs allow Angus farmers and ranchers to make even more accurate, more rapid genetic improvements. “These tools can provide an advantage for any operation, regardless of herd size,” Northcutt says. Consumers Have High Expectations The Cattlemen’s College session on “Trends and Trendsetters” at the annual Cattle Industry Convention in Denver didn’t feature crystal balls or palm readers, just experts from various sectors in the beef business. Consumers are going back to the basics. They want high-quality, a personal connection, choices, value and their own way. That’s according to Kim Essex, senior vice president for consumer marketing for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). “Woe to the company that can’t deliver what we want, when we want it,” she said. “It’s very important in the beef industry that we don’t fall into a commodity mind-set.” The retailer, restaurateurs and packer on the seminar panel said their successes are a direct reflection of serving customer needs. Art Wagner, vice-president of cattle procurement for National Beef Packing Co., said that business model has led to carrying a variety of programs, including the Certified Angus Beef ®(CAB®) brand. “We recognize the value of the brand,” he said. “It helps us to differentiate ourselves to our customers and meet their needs.” Longhorn Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, Red Lobster and Olive Garden — all owned by Darden — also try to standout on the basis of atmosphere, quality and value. Jeff Spotz, Darden Restaurants vice president for meats, commodity and risk management, and purchasing, said customers expect a selection of quality steaks, perfectly seasoned and expertly grilled. “A Choice steak doesn’t always eat the same,” he said. “If we find a way to deliver the same eating experience the whole time that would be a huge competitive advantage.” At Buehler’s Fresh Foods, a CAB-licensed retail chain based in Wooster, Ohio, customers come to the store expecting good beef, every time. “Buehler’s success is hinged on quality,” said Dave Savidge, director of meat merchandising. He shared the company’s latest move to feature CAB Prime Natural. “Customers are willing to pay more for that,” he said. “As it grows, who is going to supply that food chain? I think it’s a trend worth considering.” He expects premium grinds to make up a big portion of their growth in 2011, noting that half of the chain’s CAB Prime Natural sales last year were grinds. Tom Ryan, founder and CEO of Smashburger, is capitalizing on Americans’ preference for a “better burger.” “That category is going to grow at 10%,” he said, compared to 3% overall in the $100-billionburger 4 March/April 2011 Kansas Angus News

market. “Our goal is to lead the pack and set a new standard.” The CAB-licensed chain started three years ago with 10 stores. Now at 179, its growth pattern rivals that of many fast-food icons, like McDonalds. One big difference is the premium quality beef. “There is something really magic about CAB and our flat grill,” Ryan said, describing the process of putting the burger on a hot grill, covering it with parchment paper and smashing it. About 55% of their diners come in for lunch and 45% for supper, which is unusual for their type of restaurant, he said. Typically lunch makes up a larger majority of the business. “Smashburger and others like us are putting burgers back in people’s lives,” Ryan said.

Long road to China By Geof Bednar, CAB International Director When beef people talk about international markets, they also usually talk about frustration over locked gates or only partly open doors. Trade barriers can involve quotas, duties, currency exchange rates, distribution costs and regulations over local ideas on food safety. Other, behind-the-scenes challenges are unrelated to agriculture but fit government agendas—and we haven’t even bridged the intricacies of politics or consumer advocacy groups that affect food policy. China, perhaps the most promising market without U.S. beef access is the oldest continuous major world civilization. Since joining the World Trade Organization in 2001, it steadily moved up the ladder to become our No. 2 agricultural market behind our neighbors to the North, Canada. And yes, there is a connection, so read on. A quick synopsis of China’s economic expansion includes a 700% increase in its appetite for U.S. agricultural products since 1997 and predictions that its 29 consecutive years of double-digit economic growth will continue at least through 2015. Let’s take a look at what is fueling China’s rise as a leading export destination. One key driver, specifically for high-quality U.S. beef, is the rise of a middle class. In China, that socio-economic description fits nearly 100 million people and may number 310 million by 2020. For comparison, the current U.S. population is 307 million and a wide range of estimates put our middle class at one-quarter to two-thirds of our people. The emerging middle class in China and such other developing regions as India, Russia and Southeast Asia offer considerable opportunity and responsibility. Think about it. After our spring bull sales, fall production sales, feeder calf sales and cull cows sold at a market peak, we may celebrate with our friends and families over a steak dinner. But other than ordering dessert, we probably do not increase our daily caloric intake, nor do we increase our overall quality of food. Those just entering the middle class around the world “celebrate” their economic status by consuming more daily calories and selecting higher quality food. In other words, they are reaching a new standard of living that offers choices. Lifestyles are allowing more sophistication in eating habits so that purchasing decisions consider exceptional taste, variety and convenience rather than just basic needs. All these attributes fit the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB) brand. The exciting news for the brand is that China and Canada are negotiating a beef trade agreement. This wouldn’t be the first time the Canadian-based portion of CAB production allowed worked in favor of all North American Angus producers while the U.S. stood frustrated on the sidelines. Canadian beef production, specifically its CAB component, is a small fraction of U.S. production, but a trade agreement between these nations will let the brand gain a foothold in one of the last great, untapped beef export markets. Unfortunately, predicting the near-term impact on brand sales and tonnage is like trusting the weather forecast when it’s time to knock down a little hay or getting a handle on calf prices next fall. What we do know is, even with closed access, it is impossible to prevent folks with discretionary income from somehow gaining access to and enjoying the CAB brand. That was evident from a recent trip to China, where I learned that much of our product finds its way indirectly, through gray channels. Of course, once market access is openly established, we’ll do our part to grow branding opportunities while providing for an increasingly sophisticated restaurant, hotel and retail customer the opportunity to “Taste the Difference®.”

Bryce Schumann , American Angus Association CEO was a featured speaker during the annual meeting and addressed the banquet crowd.

The meeting room on the Kansas State Fairgrounds was filled to capacity as the KAA conducted the business of the annual meeting and listened to featured speakers Bryce Schumann, American Angus Association CEO and Jeana Hurlbut , Maximum Exposure. Jeana Hurlbut discussed how photography, videography , internet and print advertising can enhance marketing cattle.

Hannah McCabe, Elk City, received the Kenneth & Lorene Moore Scholarship .Trisha Breuel chairman of the Kansas Angus Auxiliary scholarship committee presented the scholarship

Miss American Angus Paige Wallace, Stotts City, MO was a special guest at the banquet and graciously assisted with the Auxiliary fund raiser auction. The auction netted $3820 for scholarships and programs.

EXAR Forever Lady 3599 won the AJ McCurry memorial supreme champion buckle and grand champion owned female at the 2011 Junior Show, Jan. 23 Jennifer Hager, Stafford, owns the September 2009 daughter of EXAR Spartan 6225. Dru Uden, Franklin, Neb., evaluated the 82 entries. More junior show photos will be published in the May/June KAN. Kansas Angus Association Selects 2010 Honorary Members In 1973, Laflin Ranch was awarded a “Centennial Angus Herd” award. During that same year at the Kansas Angus Association Centennial Sale the Laflins donated a heifer with the proceeds being divided half to help sponsor the Centennial State Fair Angus Show and half to sponsor the KJAA at the National Junior Angus Show. Herd bulls impacting the Laflin program include TN9 Duplicate who had a successful show career until his tragic event of slipping on the concrete and breaking his leg while at the famed International Livestock Show in Chicago, Illinois in 1971 as well as Early Sunset Emulous 44D that was purchased out of the National Western Bull Sale. His progeny were popular in the show ring with the most recognized female being MSU Miss Emulous 436. She was Grand Champion Female at the 1975 All American Angus Futurity in Lexington, Ky. The maternal strength 44D left in the herd can still be traced in the pedigrees. Circle A Western Hauler was the American Angus Association Show Bull of the Year in 1995. He was purchased for his growth and carcass genetics. WC Northern Edge also played an instrumental role as a herd sire for the Laflins. Exhibiting cattle at the major shows across the United States played a big role in advertising and merchandising their bulls and females. A spring sale is held every March at the ranch.

Bob & Barbara Laflin Laflin Ranch, Olsburg, Ks On January 22, 2011, the Kansas Angus Association honored Bob and Barbara Laflin of Laflin Ranch, Olsburg, Kansas with honorary membership during the annual banquet in Hutchinson. Barbara with many family members at her side graciously accepted the award as she and Bob (posthumously) were inducted into honorary membership. Here is their story; Bob and Barb were married in 1955, he a Korean War veteran and third generation Angus breeder and she a city gal who loved horses. Their passion was to continue the family Angus ranching business while raising their family. With the heritage of having Angus cattle in the Laflin family since 1900- Bob & Barbara raised their four children, Sharee, R.D., Karen and Guy all grew up with the same passion of breeding and raising Angus. Bob’s enthusiasm for the show ring began in high school with FFA and carried on from there. A highlight for Bob & Barb the fall after they were married was exhibiting Maple Dell Pride the 7th to Champion Angus Female at the 1955 Nebraska State Fair. Through the years Bob & Barb hosted Kansas Angus Association field days and tours at their ranch. Education about performance testing and carcass data played an instrumental role early on in their cattle. They owned the first Performance Registry International Certified Meat Sire in Kansas, Emulous Tail N the 9th. “Muscle is the name of the game” was their motto. Broadening their Angus cattle market, Bob along with the Kansas Livestock Association sold bulls into Mexico. Bulls were taken from Kansas to the Expogan Show in Chihuahua.

Sharee, R.D., Karen and Guy were active in Kansas Junior Angus Association and National Junior Angus Association activities. They showed at district, state and national junior shows as well as the Kansas State Fair and Kansas Junior Livestock Shows. Karen won the National Junior Showmanship Contest and Guy was on the National Junior Angus Board. In 2000, the Laflins celebrated their 100th Year Anniversary of breeding Angus cattle. Red Stegal and his band entertained the crowd of approximately 1000. People from over 20 states were in attendance. Many guest speakers were on hand along with the Fort Riley mounted color guard displaying horsemanship skills from the cavalry era. In 2004 Bob passed away and the NJAA inducted Bob & Barb into the Honorary Angus Foundation during the Junior National that year. In 2007, the Laflin family donated the proceeds from the sale of Laflins Lady Barbara to enhance the Angus Foundation’s Robert Laflin memorial fund. This fund provides an award to the top team in the Team Sales Contest at the National Junior Angus Show annually. The Kansas team has been very successful in winning this award. Bob and Barb’s children and grandchildren, the fourth and fifth generations Angus breeders are very much involved in agriculture and are carrying on the tradition of breeding and raising Angus cattle.

Horses played a big role in the ranch business. As well as using them to work cattle Bob & Barb ran a broodmare band standing two AQHA Champion stallions. Barb’s background included being Nebraska Rodeo Queen in 1953. They showed several futurity champions through the years and exhibited in shows including the National Western and Fort Worth Stock Shows. Good horses were a must at Laflin Ranch.

Kansas Angus Auxiliary Dear Kansas Angus News readers, Spring is right around the corner as we look forward to it. It’s refreshing to see the earth green up and baby calves romping around. And with that, the preparations for cattle sales are underway once again! I hope you can take in some sales and show support for our great industry. With spring comes a busy time, and I want to encourage the high school seniors to finish their scholarship application and mail it soon. Please note the deadline for Kansas is April 15. As the auxiliary encourages and supports our juniors, I would like to encourage each and every one of you to help support the auxiliary with your dues and if you can, your presence. It encourages all of us to pull together and work as a team.
