hank you for taking the time to review our cattle offerings this year. A special thanks to all our past customers, some who have been buying from us since before we started having sales. We continue to hear from our customers that their calves are coming unassisted, weaning off heavy and bringing top dollar at the sale barn. In today’s environment with fluctuating prices for inputs and outputs, the cowherd is under intense pressure to generate returns. We believe our 40+ year breeding program focused on calving ease, growth, moderate frame, maternal and carcass traits on our bulls will help your cowherd increase returns. Depending on the makeup of your herd, using our purebred or SimAngus bulls allows you to take advantage of hybrid vigor with added pounds on your calves and the associated complementary traits of enhanced carcass qualities, cowherd longevity and increased productivity. $Indexes put a dollar value on a combination of EPDs, market and input costs. Use API if you keep replacements and TI if you sell all your calves. The latest $indexes show our purebreds in the sale average in the top 25% for API and TI. The SimAngus bulls average in the top 25% API and top 20% TI. Indexes are used by chicken, dairy and pork industries to predict higher returns, they suggest our bulls will increase your bottom-line. Our bulls have been developed in large lots to ensure sound feet and legs while giving them plenty of exercise. All bulls will be semen tested, scrotal measured and ultrasounded before the sale. Yearling weights in the catalog are based off of weights taken December 27. New weights will be taken when we ultrasound at the end of January. Results will be posted on our web site as they become available and will be at the sale. Our sale will be broadcast live on LMA Auctions. You can go online and bid during the sale. Directions on how to do this are in the catalog or give us a call if you need some help. If you prefer, you can be on the phone during the sale to bid, or have us bid on a bull for you. If you’re concerned about buying an animal “sight unseen”, please remember that if you’re not satisfied with the bull we’ll return your money. It’s just that simple. TERMS & CONDITIONS The cattle will sell under the terms and conditions recommended by the American Simmental Association. LIVESTOCK INSURANCE Livestock Insurance will be available sale day. LIABILITY All persons who attend this sale do so at their own risk, legal or otherwise, for their safety or the behavior of the animals. The owner, River Creek Farms, and the sale barn assumes no liability for property loss or accident that may occur. ANNOUNCEMENTS Announcements made sale day and from the auction block will take precedence over printed material in the catalog. SATISFACTION GUARANTEE Full satisfaction guarantee for every animal that sells. Every bull sells with a â€œFirst Breeding Season Guarantee". VOLUME DISCOUNT Anyone who purchases 3 bulls is eligible for a 3% discount, 4 bulls - 4%, and 5 or more is eligible for a 5% discount. . TRUCKING Free Delivery on bulls to customers within 300 miles of Manhattan. If you are located farther than 300 miles we will make arrangements and pay for half the expense elsewhere in the continental United States. We will guarantee your transportation costs do not exceed $200 per head. $100 discount if you haul your purchased bulls home sale day.

HERD HEALTH All cattle will sell with proper interstate health papers. All sale cattle have been vaccinated with IBR, BVD, P13, Vibro Letpo 5, eight-way blackleg and poured with Ivomec. All bulls have been fertility checked. All sell guaranteed breeders. Scrotal measurements will be available sale day and on our website. All bulls tested BVD negative. CATTLE CARE OPTION River Creek Farms will take the bulls home and continue to develop them until April 1st, free of charge. We will then make arrangments with you to deliver the bull(s). RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST River Creek Farms will retain 1/2 semen interest on all bulls in the offering. You will own full possession and salvage value of the bull. In the event that semen sales become a reality on your purchase, River Creek Farms will retain the rights to 1/2 of semen sales revenue. River Creek Farms retained semen interest remains if the bull is sold to a third party. BULL DEVELOPMENT We performance test the bulls on a ration designed for 3.0 pounds per day gain and in lots one-half mile long to ensure adequate exercise. We believe this adequately conditions the bulls for breeding with sound feet and legs while enabling them to exhibit their gain ratio. You may notice the fall bulls have lower adjusted yearling weights than the spring bulls. The fall bulls were run on grass last summer without supplementation from May 1 to September 1. Consequently, their yearling weights, WDA, and ribeye areas are smaller than the spring bulls. You should not use the data to compare the two groups of bulls but use it to compare bulls within each age group.

Every bull in this yearâ€™s sale was developed in lots one-half mile long to ensure adequate exercise, an athletic frame and structural correctness. These bulls are not fat, they are ready to go to work in any evironmental condition.

UNDERSTANDING ASA EPDS & ECONOMIC INDEXES

CALVING EASE CE Expresses as a percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. The higher the calving ease EPD the better. For the PB bulls we consider a score of +10 or better safe to use on heifers. BIRTH WEIGHT BW Expressed in pounds and predicts the average difference that can be expected in an animalâ€™s offspring when compared to the average.

Using API & TI Just as with regular EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another.

Both of these EPDs assist in predicting differences in pounds of growth between animals. Weaning Weight predicts differences in growth at 205 days of age and Yearling Weight is expressed at 365 days of age.

For example, when buying an all bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000).

MATERNAL CALVING EASE MCE Predicts the average ease with which a sireâ€™s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers.

WEANING & YEARLING WEIGHT WW

MATERNAL MILK MM Reflects the average difference in weaning weight of a bulls grandprogeny because of their daughterâ€™s milking ability. Cattle with higher Milk EPDs often take more feed rescources to manage. MATERNAL WEANING WEIGHT MWW Expressed in pounds. MWW reflects the genetic influence of a bull on its grandprogenyâ€™s weaning weight when compared to the average. CARCASS WEIGHT CW Expresses the difference in pounds of carcass weight at 475 days of age. Bulls with higher carcass weight EPDs will produce cattle with larger hot carcass weights. YIELD GRADE YG Predicts the average difference in Yield Grade score that can be expected between the progeny of the bull. A lower number predicts a lower Yield Grade score.

RIBEYE AREA REA Predicts the average difference in square inches of ribeye area. MARBLING MRB Indicates the amount of intra-muscular fat. A higher number will indicate a high amount of IMF, and a higher quality grade score. BACK FAT BF Indicates the amount of fat over the 12th & 13th rib. A higher number indicates more back fat. ALL PURPOSE INDEX API Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd, with a portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold by grade and yield. TERMINAL IDEX TI Evaluates sires for use on Angus cows with offspring put on feed and sold by grade and yield.

Mertz, started his operation three miles west on the land that is now headquarters for the farm. The farm headquarters is located approximately nine miles east of Manhattan along K18, in the Kaw Valley River bottom. Calving Ease Guarantee We’ve always emphasized calving ease as a high priority. Like most of our commercial customers, we don’t have time to babysit cows during calving season. Our cows calve mainly on pasture or stock fields, so there are very few calves assisted. When a cow loses a calf, she is sold. This practice contributes to the reputation for calving ease enjoyed by River Creek Farms. If, after one year, you feel you had too much calving difficulty on three year or older cows, we will replace the bull or return the purchase price.
