For a fee, we will keep them and calve them out. After your last heifer calves, we will deliver pairs to you. In the unlikely event that we should lose a calf, we will offer a like replacement. If a suitable replacement is unavailable, we will offer a full refund (purchase price + calve out fee). Please note: we can not offer live calf guarantees on heifers taken home to calve.

Turning cull heifers into profit centers Do you want to shorten your breeding (and calving!) season but not stand the usual financial hit on open heifers? Consider feeding them with us. We feed ours out and have averaged over $1200/head with a small feed investment. Doing this has netted us an extra $300+/head over the last several years. You can get carcass data, shorten your breeding & calving seasons, select for fertility and make more money all at the same time. Talk to us for more details.

Calves are vaccinated going to grass (at 2 months down to a few weeks of age) with Virashield 6 and 7-way blackleg. We do not worm going to grass, instead we wait until the end of June and use Safeguard in the mineral to catch the worms they may have picked up. The calves are given 2 rounds of respiratory complex vaccine, a pastuerella and another 7-way blackleg around weaning. They are also dewormed with an ivermectin product to clean up any late summer infestation. Steers will be given a Synovex implant at this time, however replacement heifers are never implanted. Reproductive tract scoring, PI testing and pre-breeding vaccinations happen in February. Cows are pregged when we can, sometimes before they move to stubble fields but usually after. They receive a 7-way booster and a staybred vaccine. They also receive either Cattlemaster or Virashield and are poured with an ivermectin product. Neither ranch uses scour vaccines as we luckily do not incur many scour problems. Ask Joe or Barb for more information about the Sandhills Calving System.
Cattle Philosophies Feeding and Handling of the Bulls: The bulls were weaned by mid September on their respective ranches. They received 2 rounds of vaccinations for viral respiratory diseases and clostridials. All the bulls have been BVD-PI tested negative, and both herds are a Johnes test negative status. The bulls are pooled at Kniebel Ranch for growing and testing where they receive a high roughage ration geared toward 2.5-3.0 lbs of gain. The bulls have large traps to ensure plenty of exercise. The average back fat on the bulls at ultrasound in April runs less than .20” BF (much less than most Purebred breeders). Fat bulls are not good for longevity!! The bulls go to grass in May, some are used in herd. The bulls that have been used have been trich tested for your herd safety. They returned to Kniebel’s in late August where they received a ration to prepare them for the sale. The bulls have been given booster vaccinations and dewormed, along with semen evaluations in October. They are ready to go to work! The bulls have been handled with a variety of ‘vehicles’. These include horses, wheelers, a dog and of course on foot!
Heifer Selection and Development The commercial replacement heifers are chosen by their individual phenotype and performance. They must be born in the first half of the calving season and have a mother with no problems. The replacements are sorted from the rest of the calves and put on roughage rations and ran in pastures for the winter. In the spring, they are fed an MGA supplement for synchronization. They are inseminated over a 3-6 day period and then turned out with clean up bulls for 40 days. The heifers have had all their vaccinations, including boosters this fall, are also BVD-PI tested and palpated bred by Dr. Tom Taul with an estimation of calving date. Kniebel’s heifers are tattooed with their permanent number. The heifers see us on foot (a lot during AI season) and are worked with horses, wheelers, etc. They’ll follow a truck with a bale of alfalfa anywhere!
Cows on the Range This pretty much dictates how they are handled! Cows are roughage digesters. That’s what we have to market. From weaning till calving, cows are on stalks or dormant native range with a protein supplement in their mineral. Some lucky cows will graze on brome and triticale right ahead of calving. While heifers are calved up closer, all cows are calved out on range and are expected to take care of themselves and their calves. This ain’t no B&B. Come calving time, we feed about 90% of what they need (brome, prairie hay, etc.) and they must glean the rest from the range.

own home-raised heifers. We then chose some from this elite group for the sale. For these heifers to have made the cut they had to pass strict criteria which includes: mom’s udder and stayability, calving date, temperament, conformation, and weaning weight. They are then reevaluated before they are artificially bred. Some heifers were not AI’d this year but turned out with good heifer bulls. We are offering a group of registered red angus heifers (selling as commercial) that are bred red angus. To start with, we kicked out those heifers that were too big or too small, were born in the 2nd 1/2 of the season, any bad temperaments, poor performers, structural concerns, etc. From that elite group, we selected heifers from the best cows. When all was said and done, we had less than 1/2 the heifers left. We are offering you 1/2 of the best of the best! These are NOT put together heifers but rather the top of our herd with generations of AI, tough selection and proven performance on the range and the rail (see our carcass data on p. 14). PLEASE READ: Recommendations for Calving KCC & DRI Heifers Remember, once they leave our place, we no longer have control and therefore can NOT make calving guarantees! So… 1. Feed last thing in the evening starting several weeks before calving. It helps promote daytime calving. 2. Have facilities, equipment and cattle in place at least 2 weeks before the 1st due date. Some heifers will calve up to 10 days before their due date. You need to be ready to offer assistance if needed. Have a cold weather plan too! 3. Check heifers often. Know when to help, how to help and when to call in outside assistance. A Word About Cattle Feeding It’s no secret that both operations are big believers in retained ownership of quality cattle. After all, if you’re going to go to the trouble of stacking high-quality genetics and handling and vaccinating your cattle properly, why not reap the benefits? If you’re willing to go one step further and identify those animals, the story gets even better. You need to know how your own cattle perform, even if you never anticipate retaining ownership. Retained ownership seems to be increasing this year, even with higher calf prices and higher corn. It’s probably because of the projected breakevens. Let’s take a look: Value of 550 lb calf @ 1.25 on Oct. 1, 2010:

That is a $57 per head potential. In addition our grid premiums average $50 and the rewards for age/source are $35 per head, bringing OUR total to $142/head over selling a calf!

Understanding & Interpreting Data In general, the AAA has set things up so that the higher the number, the “better” it is. In other words, for calving ease direct (CED), a bull with a 9 would calve easier than a bull with a 2. A higher marbling EPD means more marbling and so forth. However, please be careful not to think that bigger is always better. A bull with an outrageously high $Beef value may give you huge frame scores and hard doing cows. Higher milk values could lead in some instances to udder problems and cows that milk themselves down too much and therefore have trouble rebreeding. The other thing to consider is how much data is behind the numbers the Association generates. We’re excited about the $EN value index which attempts to get a handle on more efficient cows. However, this the Association uses Milk EPD and mature size only to calculate this number. This misses those really efficient outliers (and some hard-doing ones too!).
The Red Angus Association is the only association that builds EPD’s from Total Herd Reporting (THR). THR uses data from the entire calf crop - not just the calves that were good enough to register. The biggest benefit of THR is the elimination of reporting bias from data used to calculate EPDs. Perhaps even more significant is the overestimate of performance of sires whose poorer performing calves are not reported. This next thought cannot be stressed too much. YOU CAN NOT COMPARE EPD’S ACROSS BREEDS!!!! Black Angus breeders consider BW +2.0 and below to be suitable for use on heifers, while Red Angus breeders will usually want less than a 1.0 BW EPD. Having said that, here are the averages for parent sires in the AAA and RAA as of September of the current year:

Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. x REA-expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. x BF– expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. $VALUE INDEXES—Black Angus ONLY x Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. x $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. x Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. x Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. x Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. x Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Reproductive Indexes—Red Angus ONLY x Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers more than an indicator trait, it selects for producers’ desired response: pregnant heifers. x The ME EPD predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in Mega-calories per month. Differences in Maintenance Energy requirements can easily translate into differences in feed required to maintain body weight. While higher milking, higher growth (larger mature size) cattle typically have higher maintenance requirements, there are many Red Angus sire choices that defy these antagonisms - actually combining positive revenue traits (Growth and Milk) with negative Expense Traits (ME). Downey Ranch Honored as 2010 BIF Commercial Producer of the Year News release by Katie Maupin for the Beef Improvement Federation
COLUMBIA, MO. (JUNE 29, 2010) — The Beef Improvement Federation named Downey Ranch Inc. (DRI) of Wamego, Kan., as its 2010 Commercial Producer of the Year. Located just southeast of Manhattan and nestled in the Flint Hills, DRI has ensured the proper handling of its cattle since its formation in 1986 by Joe Downey. Joe Carpenter and Barb Downey, DRI managers, accepted the award from BEEF magazine Senior Editor Burt Rutherford during the 42nd BIF Research Symposium and Annual Meeting, June 28-July 1, in Columbia, Mo. The Kansas Livestock Association (KLA), located in Topeka, proudly nominated the ranch. “The Downey Ranch makes a great commercial producer nominee because they work hard every day to make sure that a good quality product makes it to the consumer’s plate,” said Scarlett Hagins, communications program manager for the KLA. That has been their focus since Day 1, she added.

Presently, the Downey Ranch encompasses more than 6,300 acres occupied by 550 cows. Along with its 140 registered Angus cows, DRI manages commercial Angus, F-1 baldies and Red Angus and Angus-cross cows, 425 that calve in the spring and 125 that calve in the fall. Downey Ranch’s low-stress handling techniques ensure that no animal “ever has a bad day.” Integrated disease management, fenceline weaning, early weaning, research- and feedbackbased management and individual end-point management are also utilized by the DRI team to efficiently produce high-quality beef. Most DRI calves are marketed through U.S. Premium Beef (USPB) on an age- and sourceverified grid, while commercial bred females and registered bulls are sold at an annual production sale. Downey Ranch assists its customers in optimizing returns on their calves by using the tools that are proven successful. Downey Ranch is now focused on financial analyses and has added a family member to the team to assist with the process.
