With five acclaimed albums to their name, they’ve carved out a reputation as one of the UK’s most dynamic bands. Rooted in British folk heritage, they reimagine the tradition, producing songs inspired by love, loss, hope and defiance that are both timeless and fiercely contemporary. Whether you’re a seasoned folk aficionado or a newcomer, Merry Hell invite you along on the journey.

French acoustic guitar virtuoso, vocalist and composer Pierre Bensusan has taken his unique sound around the globe. Winner of the Independent Music Award for his triple live album Encore, voted Best World Music Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine, and winner of Montreux Festival’s Rose d’Or for his debut album, Pierre is recognized as one of the greatest guitar players of the 21st century and one of today’s most eloquent world music artists.

Kassi Valazza crafts songs that glow softly, like streetlights in the fog – lush, lyrical Americana steeped in solitude and selfdiscovery. Her most recent album, From Newman Street, unfolds like a companion to Joni Mitchell’s Hejira, tracing landscapes with sharp wit and quiet grace. Written between Portland and her home in New Orleans, the album reflects on change, restlessness and growth, with soul-stirring songs that invite listeners into a world where uncertainty becomes its own kind of peace.

A towering figure in Irish music, Cara Dillon has earned global acclaim and for almost 30 years, has occupied a singular space in folk music. Her voice – deceptively delicate yet emotionally devastating –evokes something timeless and elemental. Together with husband and collaborator Sam Lakeman, Dillon’s intimate live shows feature acoustic sets drawn from her extensive discography. Classics like ‘Black Is the Colour’ and ‘The Parting Glass’ appear alongside material from 2024’s Coming Home – a profound meditation on identity and emotion.

Domingo

The very first notes of Mahler’s Ninth seem to stumble. The stricken composer put the rhythm of his failing heart into the orchestra, and his Ninth Symphony opens with a sigh of farewell. Respighi Roman Festivals

Vasily Petrenko conductor

Summer is here – time for a touch of la dolce vita, Roman style, from Conductor Laureate Vasily Petrenko. In fact, he’s got a whole concert full of pictures to paint and stories to tell – fairytales from Rachmaninov, Spanish melodies from Prokofiev (dazzlingly played by violin soloist and former Young Artist in Residence Johan Dalene), and a powerful, pocket-sized Russian symphony by Prokofiev’s underrated friend Miaskovsky. And then we’re off to sunny Italy, where Respighi’s Roman holiday ends our season in a riot of fun.
