TRAINING FOR LONGEVITY, NOT JUST AESTHETICS B Y JUL IAN BIS QU ER T

B

uild a body that performs at 60 — not just one that photographs well at 30.

Walk into most gyms and you’ll see the same focus: abs, arms, angles, lighting. Training for aesthetics isn’t a bad thing. Looking

16

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

strong feels good. It builds confidence. It motivates consistency. But here’s the bigger question: Are you building a body for the next 12 weeks… or the next 40 years?

R E C OV ER Y

Because those are two very different training strategies. As a physiotherapist, I increasingly see fit, driven individuals in their 30s and 40s who look athletic — yet deal with recurring tendon pain, stiff hips, cranky shoulders, and fatigue that never quite resolves. Not because they’re lazy. Quite the opposite. They train hard. But they don’t always train long-term.

Think of muscle as protective armour. The more capacity your muscles have, the less strain your joints and connective tissues experience. The goal isn’t just to feel “burnt out” after a workout. It’s to progressively build tissue that can tolerate life — sport, stress, travel, ageing. Consistency beats intensity when you zoom out over decades. Tendons: The Tissue That Tests Your Patience

Longevity requires a shift in mindset — from chasing fatigue to building capacity.

Muscle adapts quickly. Tendons don’t.

Muscle: Your Long-Term Insurance Policy

And that’s where many fitness enthusiasts come unstuck.

After 30, muscle mass gradually declines unless you actively fight to maintain it. And muscle isn’t just about shape — it’s your metabolic engine, your joint support system, and your physical independence account.

Tendons thrive on heavy, slow, progressive loading. What they struggle with is chaotic programming — random high-intensity sessions, too much volume, or stacking intense training on top of poor recovery.

Well-structured strength training: • Improves insulin sensitivity • Regulates blood sugar • Supports hormonal health • Reduces joint stress by absorbing load efficiently

That lingering elbow pain from pressing? That stubborn Achilles stiffness? That recurring knee niggle? Often, it’s not weakness. It’s load mismanagement. Longevity training means: • Gradual progression

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

17

R E C OV E RY

• Respecting recovery

• Medicine ball throws

• Strategic deloads

• Sprint exposure for those who can tolerate it

• Building tolerance, not just chasing sweat

Even light loads moved quickly stimulate the nervous system in a way slow grinding reps don’t.

Elite teams in leagues like the Premier League don’t just train hard — they monitor load, rotate intensity, and think in seasons, not sessions. Your training deserves the same foresight.

Mobility That Actually Transfers

Power: The Quality That Disappears First

There’s a difference between being flexible and being resilient.

Here’s something most gym-goers overlook: Strength declines slowly with age. Power declines rapidly. Power is your ability to produce force quickly. It’s what allows you to react, catch yourself, change direction, or move explosively. You don’t need to become an Olympic lifter. But you do need intent. Longevity programming should include: • Controlled jumps (when appropriate) • Fast concentric lifts 18

Power training keeps you athletic — not just strong.

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

Passive stretching alone won’t protect you from injury. Real-world durability comes from strength at end range — being able to control your joints in their most vulnerable positions. Instead of endless static stretches, think: • Deep squats you can own • Split squats with full hip extension • Overhead pressing with proper scapular control • Hamstring strength in lengthened positions Mobility without strength is temporary.

R E C OV ER Y

Mobility with strength is longevity.

Aesthetic Goals vs Athletic Longevity

Recovery: The Most Underrated Performance Tool

Aesthetic-focused training often prioritises:

Longevity isn’t built on maximum effort every session.

• Volume

It’s built on repeatable effort. Chronic under-recovery: • Increases pain sensitivity • Elevates injury risk • Disrupts hormonal balance • Reduces training adaptation Sleep isn’t weakness. Deload weeks aren’t laziness. Lower-intensity sessions aren’t wasted time. They’re how you stay in the game. The individuals who move well at 60 aren’t the ones who trained hardest in one year. They’re the ones who trained intelligently for 30.

• Isolation • Pump • Short-term fatigue Longevity-focused training prioritises: • Progressive overload • Movement quality • Tissue capacity • Energy system balance • Sustainable intensity The irony? When you train for longevity, aesthetics usually follow. But training purely for aesthetics doesn’t guarantee durability.

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

R E C OV E RY

A Simple Longevity Blueprint

The real flex isn’t visible abs in good lighting.

Each week, consider including:

It’s:

• 2–4 structured strength sessions

• Pain-free shoulders

• 1–2 exposures to speed or power

• Hips that still move freely

• Low-intensity cardiovascular work

• Knees that tolerate load

• At least one true recovery day

• Energy that lasts

• Planned progression (not random intensity)

• Strength that stays

Think in years.

Train for the body you want to live in — not just the one you want to display.

Programme in phases.

Because looking strong is impressive.

Respect fatigue.

Staying strong is exceptional.

ou wake up. Before your feet touch the floor, you check your score. Recovery 62%. Sleep: fair. Strain target: 14.7. You have not spoken to anyone yet, but your wrist already has an opinion. Welcome to the quantified morning. Once upon a time, you woke up and asked yourself how you felt. Now you ask your watch, your ring, your app. Devices like WHOOP, Apple Watch, 34

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

Garmin Forerunner, and the Oura Ring do not just track your training — they interpret it. They grade it. They tell you whether today is a day to push or a day to pull back. The question is no longer “How do you feel?” It is “What does your data say?” And more importantly, what happens when you stop trusting yourself without it? Fitness used to be simple. You trained hard, you rested, you repeated. Now recovery is a number.

FI TN E SS DATA

Sleep is a percentage. Readiness is colour-coded. Green means go. Yellow means cautious. Red means stand down. There is something seductive about that clarity. No guesswork. No emotion. Just metrics. Heart rate variability, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, sleep cycles, skin temperature — all fed into an algorithm that decides how prepared your body is to perform. For athletes, this is powerful. Overtraining drops. Burnout becomes measurable. Performance becomes programmable. But somewhere along the way, the data stopped informing us. It started instructing us. If your readiness score is low, do you skip the gym even if you feel fine? If your sleep score dips, do you move through the day convinced you are tired? The body whispers. The device announces. And we tend to listen to the louder voice. Fitness tech is not just about insight. It is about engagement. Close your rings. Hit your strain target. Beat last week’s VO2 max. Protect your streak. Platforms like Apple Fitness+ and tracking ecosystems synced through Strava turn movement into momentum. Every workout feeds the machine. Every upload earns validation. Every badge feels like progress. And it works. Streak psychology is powerful. When you are on day 46 of hitting your

step goal, you will pace around your kitchen at 11:57 pm just to protect it. That is not discipline. That is design. The same behavioural loops that keep us refreshing social media now live on our wrists — micro rewards, visual celebrations, subtle nudges. You did it. You closed it. You beat it. Again. Again. Again. The line between motivation and dependency gets thinner every day. There was a time when being fit meant looking strong, running fast, or feeling capable. Now it often means having the numbers to prove it. What is your resting heart rate? Your HRV baseline? Your biological age? We speak in metrics. We compare in metrics. We compete in metrics. VO2 max has become a status symbol. Sleep scores are dinner-table conversation. Recovery percentages dictate social plans. When your watch tells you your fitness age is lower than your actual age, it feels like a win. When it climbs even slightly, it feels personal. We have outsourced validation to algorithms. And algorithms do not understand nuance. They do not know you had a stressful week at work, travel fatigue, or broken sleep. They just see numbers drifting from baseline. To the system, you are data. To yourself, you are supposed to be more than that. LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

35

F I TNE SS DATA

There is a quiet side effect to constant tracking: performance pressure. If everything is measurable, everything can be improved. And if everything can be improved, nothing ever feels finished. Sleep becomes something to optimise. Recovery becomes something to hack. Rest becomes something to justify. You lie in bed thinking about deep-sleep percentages instead of actually sleeping. You wake up worrying about readiness before you stretch. Ironically, the pursuit of better metrics can create the stress that lowers them. Some users report feeling more anxious on low-score days. A red recovery ring does not just suggest rest — it can feel like failure. But here is the uncomfortable truth: your body does not know its readiness score. It only knows how it feels. And sometimes technology interrupts that relationship. To be clear, fitness data is not the villain. Elite athletes have used performance metrics for decades. Monitoring training load, recovery, and physiological markers prevents injury and enhances longevity. In professional sport, marginal gains matter. But most of us are not preparing for the Olympics. We are training for health, stress relief, confidence, and life. When everyday training starts to feel like a laboratory experiment, something shifts. Instead of enjoying a run, you chase pace averages. Instead of lifting intuitively, you chase strain targets. Instead of resting naturally, you chase sleep perfection. The joy of movement quietly becomes a performance review. Technology promises control, but health has always involved uncertainty.

Data does not live in isolation anymore. It lives online. Your splits sync automatically. Your heartrate graph is shareable. Your long run appears on feeds within minutes. On Strava, segments turn local parks into leaderboards. Recovery screenshots become humblebrags. There is nothing wrong with community — shared effort inspires consistency. But public metrics add another layer of pressure. You are not just accountable to yourself. You are accountable to your feed. And when fitness becomes content, the numbers matter even more, because numbers perform. Every heartbeat you log lives somewhere. Your recovery score is not just a number on your wrist — it is stored, analysed, aggregated, refined. Every step, every lift, every restless night builds a profile of you that exists outside your body. Companies promise it is anonymised, encrypted, protected. But biometric data is the most personal data you own. It reveals when you sleep, when you are stressed, when you are ill, when you are not performing at your best. In the wrong hands, that is insight. In

body before you check your dashboard. Because the strongest athletes are not the ones with perfect metrics. They are the ones who understand when to ignore them. Your watch can measure your heart rate. It cannot measure your intuition. And maybe that is the metric that still matters most.

Addiction is a strong word. But consider this: how often do you check your recovery before deciding to train? How disappointed are you when a workout does not count because you forgot to press start? How uneasy do you feel when your device battery dies mid-session? If the data disappears, does the workout feel incomplete? That dependency is subtle. It does not look like obsession. It looks like optimisation. And optimisation feels productive. But true fitness has always required internal awareness — listening to breath, sensing fatigue, knowing when to push, knowing when to stop. No device can fully replace that.

Tomorrow morning, when your wrist lights up with a score before sunrise, pause. Ask yourself one question before you obey it. How do I actually feel? If you cannot answer that without looking at a screen, the addiction might already be here.

The future of fitness is undeniably data-driven. Wearables will get smaller. Metrics will get deeper. Algorithms will get sharper. The solution is not to throw your tracker away. It is to reposition it. Let the data inform you, not define you. Use it as feedback, not authority. Check in with your

STRENGTH WITHOUT STRESS: WHY PILATES AND INFRARED THERAPY BELONG TOGETHER B Y DEA NA R ILEY

I

n recent years, two wellness trends have quietly moved from niche studios into the mainstream: Pilates and infrared light therapy. Separately, they’re powerful. Together? They create a deeply restorative, intelligently designed approach to strength, recovery and longevity.

42

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

As someone who has spent years exploring sustainable ways to feel strong without punishing the body, I’ve become fascinated by how these two modalities complement one another — not in a gimmicky way, but in a biologically intelligent one. Let’s break it down.

P I L AT E S A ND I N FRA R E D

The Enduring Power of Joseph Pilates’ Method

Infrared Light: More Than Just Heat

Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, Pilates was originally called Contrology — the art of controlling your body through precise, mindful movement. Unlike high-impact workouts that chase calorie burn, Pilates builds strength from the inside out.

Infrared light therapy works by delivering specific wavelengths of light that penetrate below the skin’s surface. Unlike traditional heat (which warms the air around you), infrared warms the body directly at a cellular level.

It prioritises: • Deep core activation • Joint stability • Postural alignment • Controlled breathing • Muscular endurance without bulk In an era of overtraining and adrenal fatigue, Pilates offers something radical: strength without stress. It tones, lengthens and restores. Most importantly, it teaches you how to move well — and that’s a longevity skill.

Emerging research suggests infrared exposure may: • Increase circulation • Support muscle recovery • Reduce inflammation • Encourage collagen production • Support mitochondrial function This isn’t about sweating buckets in a hot room. It’s about subtle, deep tissue warmth that enhances physiological response.

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

43

P I LATE S AN D I N FR A R E D

Why They Work So Beautifully Together

Infrared’s potential collagen-stimulating effects are an added perk. While Pilates sculpts from beneath, infrared supports the skin’s resilience above.

Pilates creates controlled muscular load and stimulates stabilising muscle groups. Infrared supports the recovery and repair process that follows.

The Bigger Picture: Longevity Over Intensity

When combined thoughtfully:

What I love most about this pairing is the philosophy behind it. Neither practice is about extremes. They are about sustainability.

1. Muscles Warm More Efficiently Gentle infrared exposure before or during Pilates can help increase circulation, allowing muscles to respond more fluidly. 2. Reduced Post-Exercise Stiffness Pilates can activate deep postural muscles that many of us neglect. Infrared light may help ease delayed tightness by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation. 3. Enhanced Mind–Body Connection There’s something about the gentle warmth of infrared that deepens body awareness. Movements feel slower, more intentional — and often more effective. 4. Skin Benefits as a Bonus

44

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

Pilates asks you to move with control. Infrared asks you to recover with intention. In a culture that often equates wellness with exhaustion, this combination whispers something far wiser: build strength, support repair, repeat consistently. Who Might Benefit Most? • Those recovering from injury (with professional guidance) • Perimenopausal and menopausal women managing inflammation and joint stiffness • Desk-bound professionals with postural imbalances • Anyone seeking strength without high cortisol spikes

P I L AT E S A ND I N FRA R E D

The key is intelligent application. Infrared should complement movement — not replace it.

Pilates builds the framework. Infrared nourishes the repair.

A Final Thought

Together, they create something beautifully modern yet rooted in timeless physiology: strength that lasts.

Trends come and go, but principles endure. Precision, circulation, recovery, and nervous system balance are not fads — they are foundations.

realise. For some, these everyday annoyances may actually be linked to the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, the hinge that connects your jaw to your skull. When this joint or the surrounding muscles become overworked, it can lead to a condition known as temporomandibular disorder, or TMD.

JAW PAIN

Why Your Jaw Could Be Causing Your Headaches

Treatment Options That Really Work

The TMJ is one of the busiest joints in your body, moving every time you chew, talk, yawn, or even swallow. When the jaw muscles, particularly the masseter and temporalis, are overworked, they can trigger pain that radiates to the temples, neck, or even behind the eyes.

1. Self Care and Lifestyle Adjustments

Your masseter, the main chewing muscle, is one of the strongest muscles in the body. If you are clenching or grinding all night, it is similar to performing an intense abdominal workout continuously while you sleep. Overworked facial muscles can lead to headaches, jaw pain, and tension you may not realise is connected to your jaw. This is why many people wake up with tight jaws, sore temples, or headaches first thing in the morning. Common Causes of TMJ Problems Common contributing factors include: • Night time clenching or teeth grinding, also known as bruxism

Small changes can sometimes make a big difference: • Avoid hard or chewy foods • Apply warm compresses to relax jaw muscles • Practice gentle jaw stretching exercises • Reduce stress through meditation or relaxation techniques 2. Splints or Night Guards Custom made dental appliances worn at night can help by: • Protecting teeth from grinding damage • Reducing jaw muscle tension • Relieving morning headaches and jaw soreness 3. Physiotherapy Targeted physiotherapy techniques can help: • Release tight jaw and neck muscles • Improve jaw movement and coordination

• Stress and emotional tension

• Reduce headaches linked to muscle tension

• Poor posture or jaw alignment

4. Medications

• Arthritis or joint inflammation

Short term relief may include:

• Trauma or injury

• Anti inflammatory medications

• Repetitive habits such as chewing gum or biting nails

• Muscle relaxants These are usually part of a broader, supportive treatment plan.

5. Botox for TMJ and Headaches Botox has emerged as an effective option for muscle based TMJ problems and related headaches. It works by temporarily relaxing overactive muscles, particularly the masseter and temporalis, reducing clenching and grinding. If you are unable to break the clenching habit on your own, Botox can help interrupt the cycle. By relaxing the overworked muscles, it helps reset the pattern, easing physical strain and reducing automatic muscle activity. Many patients notice a significant reduction in headaches, facial tension, and jaw discomfort. Results typically begin within one to two weeks and last three to four months, making it a safe and practical option for many people. Why a Dental Clinician Is Best for TMJ Botox and Related Treatments TMJ disorders involve the jaw joint, chewing muscles, bite alignment, and surrounding facial structures. Effective treatment requires a detailed understanding of oral anatomy, dental occlusion, and the relationship between the teeth, muscles, and joints. Key Reasons Dental Clinicians Are Best Placed Comprehensive understanding of jaw and bite anatomy: Dentists receive extensive training in the muscles of mastication, including the masseter, temporalis,

58

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

and pterygoids, as well as the TMJ itself. Correct injection placement and dosing depend on this detailed anatomical knowledge. Ability to diagnose underlying causes: Many cases of jaw pain and headaches are secondary to dental issues such as malocclusion, worn teeth, or bruxism. Dental clinicians can identify and treat these contributing factors alongside Botox for a more complete solution. Safety and risk management: Dental clinicians are trained to recognise warning signs that require referral to medical or surgical specialists. Their understanding of facial anatomy reduces risks such as nerve injury, asymmetry, or bite changes. Integration with other treatments: Botox can be combined with splints, bite adjustments, and physiotherapy when managed by a dental clinician, ensuring treatment is tailored to the individual. Specialist experience with jaw muscle disorders: Dental teams routinely assess and manage TMJ dysfunction and bruxism, giving them unique expertise in treating muscle related jaw conditions. 6. Specialist or Advanced Care In more severe or persistent cases, further options may include: • TMJ steroid injections

JAW PAIN When to Seek Help You should consult a professional if you experience: • Persistent jaw pain • Frequent headaches or migraines linked to jaw tension • Jaw locking or restricted movement • Long-term clenching or grinding • Pain that interferes with eating, speaking, or daily activities Early intervention can prevent symptoms from becoming chronic and significantly improve quality of life. Conclusion

• Diagnostic imaging such as MRI or CT scans • Referral to an oral medicine or maxillofacial specialist • Surgical intervention, which is rare and only considered when structural problems exist

Jaw pain, stiffness, and headaches are not just inconvenient. They may be signs of an underlying TMJ problem. The good news is that a combination of self care, splints, physiotherapy, and modern treatments such as Botox can break the cycle of muscle overuse and provide lasting relief. If you regularly wake with jaw soreness, temple tension, headaches, or neck and shoulder pain, your jaw may be trying to tell you something. Listening to it and seeking appropriate care can make all the difference.

he Women’s Super League is the top tier of the English women’s football pyramid, having been formed in April 2011. As of the 2025/26 season, the WSL features the most FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 players out of any league worldwide. With women’s football experiencing exponential growth in recent years, the WSL has also developed and advanced in order to facilitate elite competition here in England. Whilst it currently hosts 12 teams, as of the 2026/27 season, the WSL will welcome 2 more teams and

expand to a 14 team league. Women’s football is heading in an extremely exciting direction and the best way to keep up with some of the top teams in the world is through the Women’s Super League. In this article, we will explore all things Women’s Super League and inform you on the best way to get to know, follow and support world class female footballers playing here in England. The Women’s Super League, also known as the WSL, is the highest level that a female footballer

W O ME N ’ S F O OT BA L L

can play at in England. This season the league is home to 12 teams; 10 of which are affiliated to a Premier League club, with the one of the remaining two having their men’s side play in the Championship and the final team being the first independent female football club to play at the top level. London City Lionesses were promoted to the Women’s Super League off the back of a very impressive season last year in the WSL 2 and are rewriting history as they continue their success in the WSL without funding from a male counterpart side. Leicester women are making their club proud as they play their football in the top level of English football and fight to keep their place in this established league. The remaining teams that feature in the Women’s Super League are as follows: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool Tottenham, Manchester City, Manchester United and West Ham. The 2025/26 WSL season has already been one to remember. For those football fans looking for games with lots of goals, big upsets and fierce competition at the top, the Women’s Super League is the place to be. By the middle of February, 278 goals had been scored this season; an average of 2.96 goals per game. The goals were shared across many different clubs from players of different nationalities, such as Manchester City’s Jamaican striker Bunny Shaw

who leads with 15 goals to English superstar Jess Park, who has 10 goal contributions for Manchester United in her first season at the club. In addition to the WSL’s exciting scorelines, for Premier League lovers who want to see more from their clubs, the Women’s Super League can fill that void. With the current standings, the top 5 positions are held by Premier League affiliated clubs, with 5 more featuring throughout the table. Furthermore, in relation to the WSL’s links to the Premier League, the 2025/26 season has provided fans with an unique opportunity to combine their love for the male and female top league. This year has seen more matches than ever being played at the men’s teams home ground, with Aston Villa, Arsenal, Everton and Leicester opting to play all of their home games at grounds that feature (or have featured) in the Premier League. This decision has been monumental in the growth of not only the league, but in women’s football too, as it attracts fanbases from different divisions and encourages attendance from fans who had not yet watched a live female football game. As mentioned before, if you love the game, love goals and want to share your love for the grounds with those close to you, the Women’s Super League is perfect for you. In terms of English talent, the Women’s Super League has it all. 9 out of the 11 starting players

Not only is this exciting as it shows how renowned the league is, but it is an amazing opportunity for fans to watch their favourite England players live week in week out. From experienced players like Lucy Bronze and Leah Williamson at Chelsea and Arsenal, to exciting young talents like Lauren Hemp and Ella Toone at Manchester City and Manchester United, each league fixture demonstrates how far the women’s game has come and exhibits a high level of individual talent. In addition to the WSL hosting numerous Lionesses, the league is home to some of the best international players in the world. As of the 2025/26 season, the Women’s Super League has had over 500 international players participate, with 47 different nations having been represented. Players from 6 different continents currently feature in the Women’s Super League, which has allowed for a worldwide fanbase that is growing each year. As a country, we have to be extremely proud of our ability to showcase so many talented players with different backgrounds, cultures and languages. The Women’s Super League provides a safe space for players from all over the world to compete at the highest level and to inspire those who tune in to support them.

In order to appreciate the Women’s Super League, it is important to look at how far it has come since forming 15 years ago. When the WSL first began, although 16 teams applied to join the league, only 8 teams were awarded a place. In order to keep the league competitive, the WSL consisted of only the best teams in England and didn’t yet implement relegation, knowing the jump up to this league would be a big task. After two years experimenting with this system, the WSL decided to execute the traditional league structure, with the bottom teams facing relegation and the opportunity to join this league being given to the top teams of the league below. The relegation threat and promotion opportunity allowed for the league, and the league below, to become extremely competitive which has helped women’s football in England to propel forward in the last 10 years. Since its formation, the WSL has gone from being a part-time league with 8 teams to hosting 12 full-time professional clubs in addition to welcoming two more places for the 2026/27 season. It could be argued that without the investment, development and nurturing of the Women’s Super League, the rise of women’s football may have not reached the potential that it is exhibiting now here in England. The introduction of the WSL laid the foundations for the current state of the Women’s Super League, which is

W O ME N ’ S F O OT BA L L

recognised as one of the top female footballing environments worldwide. Whilst this article is focusing on the Women’s Super League, we can also look at the Women’s Super League 2 as another exciting and competitive league in England. The WSL 2 sits just below the WSL and is the second highest tier in the English Football Pyramid on the female side. As opposed to

the league structure on the men’s side, the WSL and the WSL 2 are intertwined, as they are supported by the same organisation, which is separate to all the leagues below that are run by the English FA. For this season in particular, the WSL 2 has been in the spotlight more than ever with the possibility of three clubs from this league being able to get promoted. As discussed previously, the WSL will

LANCASHIRE

65

W OM E N ’ S F O OT B A L L

expand from a 12 team league to a 14 team league for the upcoming season. In order to achieve this expansion, instead of just the winners of the WSL 2 being automatically promoted, this reward will be granted to first and second place. In addition to this, there will be an exciting play off match between the 3rd place team in the WSL 2 and the 11th place in the WSL to determine which club will feature in the advanced Women’s Super League for the 2026/27 season. As it currently stands, Charlton are comfortably sitting in 1st, with Birmingham City, Crystal Palace, Bristol City and Newcastle all competing for the automatic promotion and play off positions. In regards to Lancashire County, although currently there are no teams from this area that feature in the top two divisions, Burnley women’s team is certainly heading in that direction. As of this season, Burnley women became a full-time professional team in order to push for promotion to the WSL 2. Whilst they have been very successful over the past few seasons, the investment that the club has put into the women’s side as of late has allowed the team to flourish. With big signings being added and an increase in resources, Burnley 66

class work ethic - but if your nutrition is off, your physique will always look unfinished and the actual plan put in place will not work. Muscle growth, fat loss, recovery, hormones and even mindset are dictated by what you eat daily.

BODY BU I LD IN G

This is the repeatable nutrition framework that I have used over the last decade through my bodybuilding journey. THE FOUNDATION EVERYONE SKIPS Before macros, supplements or food timing, calories matter most – Surplus = growth – Deficit = fat loss – Maintenance = recomposition (I don’t necessarily look to keep someone in maintenance as you’re not really moving forward or going back, you’re simply not progressing) This is a standard rule for offseason and pre-contest / cutting – Offseason : small surplus (200-400 kcal) – Cutting : (300-600 kcal) This is very personal dependent and goal dependent. For instance a hard gainer who struggles to put size on in the offseason will need more of a surplus to help shift bodyweight up, and people who struggle to reduce weight when in a deficit of calories will need more of a drop in calories so you will have to be a bit more aggressive in this case. But for a start of a plan, using those calories to

increase or decrease bodyweight is a good starting point. PROTEIN - THE NON - NEGOTIABLE Protein is the only macronutrient that is directly responsible for muscle repair and growth. Target range – 1-2.5g per kg of bodyweight – Higher end would be during cutting phases to help hold onto tissue whilst food is being reduced Protein doesn’t really change from when you’re in the offseason or prep/cut. It needs to be adequate, evenly distributed and most importantly digestible. I will get to the point in the offseason where food is at its highest (6-7000 cals) and I just won’t be able to digest chicken as well as I could when food was lower. This can be the biggest limiting factor in bodybuilding for some people as it will put a halt on progression if you can’t fully digest your food efficiently. Keeping digestion at the forefront is one of the most important factors in your journey to developing tissue. For instance at this point if it happens I will swap chicken for white fish - a much easier protein to digest and eat. This will allow me

to be hungry again in two hours to then be ready for the next meal.

CARBOHYDRATES : PERFORMANCE, PUMPS & ENERGY

Something that can help as well at the peak of an offseason is swapping one or two protein sources for whey. Again a very easily digestible protein that will help with the day to day. The key is not to go overboard with this protein source. Intaking too much whey can also lead to digestion issues and for some people developing an intolerance if overconsumed. So there is a sweet spot which I normally keep at one to two meals per day consisting of whey.

Some people have a misconception with carbohydrates and tend to stay away from them because they think that they are a promoter of fat gain, where in reality this is not the case. Carbs : – Power training performance – Support muscle fullness

Best sources include :

– Reduce cortisol

– Lean meats (chicken, turkey, 5% fat beef )

– Keep hold of lean mass while dieting

– Whole eggs and egg whites

When we are looking at low carb dieting, this can work well short term, especially in a bodybuilding prep where we would lower carbs for a 16-20 week period on average to aid in dropping body fat. But long durations of this and chronically under-fueling will lead to a huge drop in training performance, poor pumps and stalled strength.

– Fish - especially white fish – Whey or isolate powders – Low fat dairy (Greek yoghurt) Adding more protein to the plan does not equal more muscle - but too little guarantees muscle loss and inadequate recovery. I always like to add slightly more protein just to make sure so I would go more towards the 2.7/2.8g of protein per kg of bodyweight.

70

Carbs are not the enemy. They are fuel.

Carbs that digest well – White rice – Oats – Cream of rice

BODY BU I LD IN G

– White potato (sweet potatoes can sometimes cause digestive distress for some) – Fruit (mainly consumed around training for the quick release of energy) Mainly carbs are put around training especially in a dieting phase when carbs get low. You will want to put the majority, if not all, of your carbs around training (pre/intra/post) to get the most out of your training and to give you the biggest chance of having a solid session. FATS : HORMONE, HEALTH & SATIETY Dietary fats support: – Testosterone production – Joint health – Brain function (you need a minimum of 40g fat per day for normal brain function) – Nutrient absorption You can take fats too low which will then lead to having mood crashes, libido loss and poor recovery Food sources include : – Whole eggs – Olive oil – Avocado – Nuts – Fatty fish (salmon) MEAL TIMING Meal timing is important all year round whether you are in the offseason or going through a cutting phase, but more important in the offseason as

food is much higher and will need to be spread out through the day evenly to make sure you have enough time to consume your meals and still have an appetite meal to meal. When I have six meals a day, which is all year round for me, I like to space my meals out in 2-3 hour gaps to make sure I’m getting the meals in efficiently but also to make sure I can go to bed at a reasonable time. The 2-3 hour space between meals is always a good guide to go off. Obviously with how life works this won’t always be the case and you may have to wait longer than this because of work or commitments through the day but it’s always a good gauge to have in your head when going through the day. In the offseason it’s very hard to go into a catabolic state because you’re consuming so much food, the body is constantly digesting so it won’t just run out and there will always be the next meal to stay topped up through the day. Try and keep your larger meals away from training, so either your first meal of the day or your last before bed. When it comes down to meals around training, these need to be fairly moderate in size, higher carb but most importantly very digestible to make training as efficient as possible. I trained fasted for many years as I would struggle to train after a large meal even if I waited 2 hours before I trained. I used to have a large meal per head, moderate protein, high carb and high fat. The high fat part of the meal would mean that it would help me get through the night and into the morning session as I did not used to eat a meal pre-training. I used to like training, feeling slightly hungry and having spent the night digesting the food from the day before. Not being overly full meant that I could

keep training intensity as high as possible and not feel sluggish from a heavy carb meal. MICRONUTRIENTS

Most people will lose body fat. Few people will hold onto muscle tissue at the same time.

Vegetables, fruits and variety do matter for :

A successful prep will consist of :

– Digestion

– Slow, controlled calorie reduction

– Inflammation control

– High protein intake

– Immune health

– Adequate carbs to train hard and to be placed around training

– Nutrient absorption Slowly a bodybuilder will run into issues if he was to just eat chicken and rice every meal every day. They would experience energy crashes, poor digestion, and inconsistent training. I normally aim to have veg in 3/6 of my meals per day and stay consistent with the serving size.

72

NUTRITION IN PREP

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

– Strategic refeeds / high carb days (only when needed) Hunger is just something you do have to expect, but muscle loss is not. Holding onto muscle should be the biggest focus along with dropping body fat.

BODY BU I LD IN G NUTRITION IN THE OFFSEASON Getting big and putting on size in the offseason does not require getting sloppy. Keeping your offseasons controlled and clean will : – Improve insulin sensitivity – Make future cuts easier – Massively improve your next offseason in terms of keeping you sensitive and responsive – Protect health markers If you’re going to go down the route of dirty bulking, this can lead to: – Excess fat gain – Long, miserable preps – Having to push cardio and steps to the extremes – Hormone stress CONSISTENCY IS KING Missed meals, binge weekends, and emotional eating will take away weeks of progress from the plan. Discipline in nutrition is what will separate physiques that look trained from physiques that look built. You can’t expect training to keep progressing if you are slacking on your nutrition.

If strength starts to drop rapidly, calories may have been dropped too hard too soon, or your cardio might be too intense that you’re not recovering.

Bodybuilding nutrition is simple but is easily one of the factors that many struggle with and can’t keep on top of. The mirror will always be the most honest feedback you need.

PREPARING YOUR BODY AND MIND FOR BIRTH B Y FRA NKI E HA R R IS

irth is unpredictable, incredible, and intense. It is a full body endurance event that requires preparation, strength, resilience, and trust in your body’s ability. Birth is one of the most physically and mentally challenging experiences that the body will go through. No one would run a marathon, compete in a hyrox, or swim the Channel without training, so why aren’t all woman and birthing people

training and strengthening themselves for birth? It is important to prepare your body, breathing and mindset for the reality of labour and birth. This does not mean extreme workouts or pushing your body to its limits, but instead taking time for intentional movement and consistent progression. The NHS strongly advises women to continue physical activity throughout pregnancy and acknowledges the benefits of an active lifestyle for

P RE G NA NCY

mum and baby. Pregnancy is not a reason to stop following an active lifestyle and it is reassuring for many women to know they can usually continue with their hobbies during pregnancy, as long as their body allows them to. For women who aren’t as active, pregnancy can be an empowering time to discover gentle, safe, intentional movement. Whilst being active is positive, it is vital that women listen to their bodies and take breaks or slow down when their body is telling them to do so to refrain from injury and running themselves down. In contrast to a race, labour and birth has no fixed finish line in sight and can last longer than expected for many women. Labour requires stamina, endurance, and a positive mindset, which can all be built on in the antenatal period. Contractions build up, peak and ease in waves. Muscles are being repetitively used and pushed further with each surge. Cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and breath control can all influence how each contraction is perceived, and knowledge can be built to understand how you can utilise your body and mind to endure the experience. When women and birthing people feel physically prepared, they often feel more emotionally equipped too. It should

be highlighted that although preparation can assist you in having a more positive experience, it does not guarantee a specific birth outcome. There are many factors that contribute to having a vaginal birth, assisted birth or caesarean birth, but in every situation, preparation and knowledge is key to optimising your experience. When preparing for birth, strength training can be very beneficial as the body relies on muscular endurance to get through potentially hours of on and off contractions. To allow descent of your baby, upright labouring and birthing positions are optimal. Finding positions that encourage optimal position of the baby and pelvis are comfortable and supportive can heavily rely on strength from the legs, glutes, back and core. Through practicing movements such as squats, box step ups and lunges, you can build lower body strength to facilitate these upright positions. An at home alternative to this could be something simple such as walking up the stairs or sitting and standing up from a chair. Furthermore, upper body and back strength can be improved through rowing movements, band assisted pull ups or triceps dips. These can be made simpler with movements such as wall press ups, seated

overhead press or bicep curls with a light weight. Core strength is also an important aspect in birth preparation as it can support the growing uterus and assist in postpartum recovery by stabilising the core muscles. There are many core exercises that are pregnancy safe such as a cat-cow movement, side planks or seated lean back until you can feel your abdominal muscles engaging. The NHS emphasises the importance of pelvic floor exercises and training during pregnancy and

76

postpartum as these muscles support the bladder bowel and uterus. Through strengthening these muscles, women may experience less urinary incontinence and support post-birth recovery. There are many accessible pelvic floor workouts online, including ‘Squeezy’, which is an app designed by physiotherapists that can be downloaded and easily followed to learn how to engage your pelvic floor muscles. Squeezy can be set to send reminders and tailor plans to your individual needs. Pelvic floor health guidance emphasises not

P RE G NA NCY

only the strengthening, but also the relaxation and lengthening of the muscles, to support vaginal birth in particular. Breathing technique is a very powerful method of birth preparation and can support physiological changes to support birth and mobility in labour. The pelvic floor is physiologically connected to the diaphragm and when the body takes a deep inhale, the diaphragm descents and the pelvic floor lengthens. During exhalation, the pelvic floor recoils back. By controlling and slowing your breathing, you are also controlling your pelvic floor muscles and enabling changes to support progression in labour. Through pregnancy, women and birthing people can practice deep, controlled breathing to support and steady the nervous system in preparation for labour. The main features of breathing control are slow nasal inhalation for approximately four seconds and extended long exhalations for a count of seven to eight seconds. Breathing and relaxation techniques are designed to support a calm and controlled labour experience for women and birthing people. To advance breathing techniques, women can practice this breathing during physical exertion. For example, holding a squat or side plank and following the breathing pattern during this, to familiarise the body and

enable women to continue these techniques during the discomfort of labour. Pregnancy hormones such as relaxin increase flexibility and mobility to muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues to allow growth and preparation for birth. Due to this, there is an increased risk of straining if the muscles are overstretched and therefore is important to rest and allow the body time to recover after a workout or active period. Pregnancy safe mobility exercises include but are not limited to, gentle hip circles or pelvic tilts, which can relieve discomfort and maintain a range of motion. Mobility enhances comfort and allows freedom of movement during later stages of pregnancy and throughout labour. Mobility can be supported with workout equipment such as yoga / birthing balls, resistance bands and balance boards. Preparation and training your mind and body is not about guaranteeing a specific birth outcome and does not mean all interventions will be avoided. Training supports your mind to adapt and overcome challenges throughout pregnancy and birth. With thoughtful preparation, women and birthing people can approach pregnancy and birth with greater confidence, strength, and a resilient, positive mindset, ultimately enriching their overall experience.

BE AUT Y in my bag or on my shelf. From hair and skin to tan and makeup, these are the beauty bits that help you look and feel your very best.

Hair: My Non-Negotiables Hair loss is one of those things no one really prepares you for. For me, it came hand in hand with my autoimmune condition, Hashimoto’s. I was waking up with hair all over my pillow, and it was coming out in handfuls in the shower. It was frightening — but after opening up and talking to

people in my salon, I quickly realised I wasn’t alone. Hormonal changes, stress, illness, postpartum shifts, and lifestyle burnout can all quietly take their toll. Whatever the reason, losing hair can knock your confidence in ways people don’t always talk about. What I’ve learned over time is that there’s no quick fix — consistency is everything. One system I’ve stayed loyal to is the Nioxin Scalp & Hair Thickening System 4. The one I use is designed specifically for coloured, dry, damaged hair with progressed thinning, but there are other options

depending on your needs. It’s a three-step routine — shampoo, conditioner, and scalp treatment — I use it weekly, usually mid-week. The shampoo has a real minty, tingly feel that leaves your scalp feeling clean and refreshed. It’s amazing for scalp health, although it doesn’t give that extra glossy, silky finish — which is exactly why I balance it with other products. Daily scalp care has become completely nonnegotiable for me, which is where Kérastase Genesis Serum comes in. I apply it every night before bed,

B E AU T Y focusing on my scalp — especially around my hairline and the sides, where my hair has always been thinner and more fragile. It’s lightweight, absorbs beautifully, and never feels greasy, which is so important, particularly if you’ve just had a blowdry. I’ll be honest — I tested this product at first because it’s expensive and I wanted to be sure it was worth the hype. But the difference was undeniable. The regrowth around my roots was so much longer where I’d been applying it. It really works. Yes, you’ll probably go through a bottle a month, but if you can commit to it, it’s worth it. At weekends, especially if I’m going out, I switch to the Kérastase Genesis shampoo and masque — my glossy, go-to hair ritual. The smell alone is gorgeous. I use a small amount of shampoo (I always get through about two and a half tubs of masque to one shampoo), then apply the masque and leave it on for as long as I can. My hair feels smooth, shiny, smells amazing, and looks super healthy — without feeling heavy or weighed down. These products are also great for the scalp, but they’re far too expensive to use multiple times a week, which is why I mix the two systems together. Hair recovery isn’t a quick fix — it’s a long-term commitment. But trust me, your future self will thank you for it.

Tan: Tried, Tested, and Loved If you’re anything like me and hate feeling pasty and pale, then you’ll understand why tan is such a non-negotiable. I’ve tried countless products over the years, and I can honestly say I’ve found the ones that really work. There’s just something about a bit of colour in the skin that instantly lifts how you feel — it gives you that extra confidence, especially for nights out or special occasions. I love going on holiday, but even when I haven’t been anywhere sunny, people constantly comment on my tan. My skin is naturally quite pale, yet I’m always asked where I’ve been away to. Even with makeup, a good tan just gives everything that little bit more glow and makes you look fresher overall. For everyday wear, I keep things low-maintenance with Garnier Summer Body Gradual Tan — and I get so many comments when I use it. This gradual tan moisturiser has become a must-have in my routine because it does two jobs at once: hydrating

the skin while slowly building a natural-looking glow. I use it most days after showering, and it gives just enough colour to take the edge off

BE AUT Y without ever looking heavy or obvious. It’s perfect for daytime, work, or when you want a subtle boost without committing to a full tan. When I want more impact — especially for nights out or special occasions — I always reach for my tinted tanning lotion from Vita Liberata. Applied with a mitt, it’s honestly one of the easiest tans I’ve ever used. The colour is a gorgeous golden tone rather than anything orange, and it blends beautifully without streaking. What I really love is how it develops — it dries quickly, looks even, and fades naturally without drying out the skin, making it ideal even if you’re not a tanning expert.

Good prep makes all the difference with tan, and removing old colour properly is something I never skip. Before reapplying, I always use the Rose & Caramel exfoliating tan remover with gloves. It’s honestly so easy — you apply it, leave it on for around 60 seconds, then rinse, and the old tan literally washes away. Your skin is left super smooth, even, and perfectly prepped, ready to go

For face tanning, this is a product I’ve used for years and always come back to. Ambre Solaire selftan spray in medium is a real game changer. I use it

two to three times a week, and it often pops up on offer in places like Boots or Home Bargains — so I always grab a few when I see it. My biggest tip is to pop on a shower cap to protect your hairline, mist lightly, and build it up gradually. I spray it on before bed, and by morning I wake up with a soft, sun-kissed glow that evens out my complexion without clogging pores or feeling heavy on the skin.

B E AU T Y again. It makes such a difference to how fresh tan applies and how natural it looks afterwards. When you find the right products that are easy, reliable, and feel good to use, tanning becomes something you actually enjoy rather than dread.

Makeup: Three Products I Can’t Be Without When it comes to makeup, I’ve learned that you don’t need a huge kit to feel put together. For me, it’s about having a few reliable staples that work every time — products I trust, reach for daily, and know will last. If I had to narrow it down, these are the three makeup products I genuinely can’t be without.

Everything starts with a good base, and for me that will always be Giorgio Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Foundation. It’s been a cult favourite for years, and for good reason. When I heard it was being reformulated, I was genuinely worried there would be a huge change in texture or consistency, but thankfully it’s still just as flawless as before. The formula is lightweight and luminous, giving coverage where you need it without ever looking heavy or cakey. I wear shade 6.5, which blends seamlessly with my skin tone and gives that natural, skin-like finish I love.

Once my base is done, I always move on to lips — and a liner makes all the difference. It helps shape the lips and keeps everything looking polished for longer. I use Maybelline lip liners with hyaluronic acid, and my go-to shade is On It. It’s the perfect everyday nude — not too brown, not too pink — and works beautifully under pretty much any lip colour. They’re creamy, comfortable, and never drying, which makes them ideal for everyday wear. To finish, I reach for my lipstick — and this is the one my friends always comment on. The Yves Saint Laurent Love Shine lipstick in shade 202 is one of those rare finds that looks beautiful and feels amazing to wear. It’s super hydrating, gives a glossy finish without being sticky, and somehow still manages to stay put — even after eating. Every time I wear it, someone asks

what’s on my lips, which tells me everything I need to know. Hopefully you’ll love my favourite picks just as much as I do. These are the products I genuinely rely on and reach for time and time again. Until next time, when I’ll be back with more tried, tested, and loved beauty finds to share with you.

That’s when I thought, if this has made me feel this confident, imagine how many other people I could help by offering this professionally. Fast-forward to now, and AJMR Studios is open — my dream turned into reality. Every day, I see women and men walk through my door who feel just like I used to. They’re tired of constant shaving, tired of the irritation, tired of wasting money on temporary fixes. And I get it, because I’ve been there. Laser hair removal isn’t just about vanity — it’s about freedom. The freedom to wake up and not think about shaving. The freedom to wear what you want, feel confident in your skin, and not be ruled by body hair or irritation.

What It Really Feels Like Let’s clear something up — laser hair removal isn’t scary or painful. Most of my clients describe it as a quick, warm flick, It’s over before you know it,

Why I Fell in Love With Laser Hair Removal When I had my first laser treatment, I was nervous — and a bit embarrassed, if I’m honest. I was getting my bikini area done and wasn’t sure what to expect. I thought it might feel awkward, but it wasn’t at all. Laser technicians do this day in and day out — there’s absolutely no judgement, it’s just part of the job. Once you’re in the room, you realise how professional and comfortable the whole process actually is. I also wasn’t sure if it would actually work or if it would be worth the money — but after just a few sessions, I couldn’t believe the difference. My skin felt smoother than it ever had before, and those awful ingrown hairs that used to drive me mad? Gone. The red bumps faded, my skin tone

and with modern technology, it’s gentler and more precise than ever. At Sphynx Laser, I use advanced technology designed to make treatments comfortable, effective, and safe for all skin types. Each session targets your hair follicles at the root, slowly reducing their ability to regrow. Over a few sessions, you’ll notice patches staying smoother for longer until — eventually — you barely need to think about it at all. What I love most is watching my clients’ confidence grow with each appointment. The relief on their faces when their skin stops breaking out or when those stubborn ingrown hairs finally disappear — that’s why I do what I do. And yes, laser works brilliantly for both men and women, whether it’s legs, underarms, face, back, or bikini. Smooth skin isn’t just a “female” thing — everyone deserves to feel comfortable and confident.

The Long-Term Payoff I like to think of laser hair removal as the ultimate investment in you. Sure, the upfront cost is more than a razor, but think about how much money you spend each year on razors, wax strips, and soothing creams. Not to mention the time you waste! With Sphynx Laser, once your course is complete, you’ll only need an occasional top-up. The results last for years, your skin looks healthier, and you’re no longer dealing with daily irritation or stubble. It’s low-maintenance luxury — and I always tell my clients, you deserve it.

Skincare: The Secret to Radiant Results Smooth, hair-free skin is just the beginning. The real magic happens when you pair laser treatments with good skincare habits. Before and after each session, I encourage my clients to treat their skin gently. Think hydration, not harsh exfoliation. Avoid anything too active or scented before a session, and after your treatment, focus on soothing and protecting your skin. A good moisturiser, a calming serum, and SPF are your best friends. And I can’t stress this enough — sunscreen is non-negotiable. Protecting your skin from UV rays keeps it even-toned, healthy, and glowing. Over the years, I’ve tried so many products, but one brand that’s completely stolen my heart is La Biosthétique Paris.

Why I’m Loving La Biosthétique When I first discovered La Biosthétique, I was drawn to its story. Founded in Paris in the 1950s by biochemist Marcel Contier, the name literally means “the biology of beauty.” That philosophy — blending nature, science, and artistry — really resonated with me. Their products are beautifully formulated, luxurious, and incredibly effective. I love that they focus on what your skin truly needs, not just trends. And the fact that many of their products are made with over 90% natural-origin ingredients, are vegan, and silicone-free makes me love them even more.

L A S E R H A I R RE MOVAL

There are a few products I’ve personally used and completely swear by:

cup of coffee before the day starts, or a laser session that gives you back your confidence, it all adds up.

• La Biosthétique Dermosthétique Hyaluronic Serum – This is pure hydration in a bottle. It plumps, smooths, and gives your skin that fresh, dewy bounce — perfect after a laser session when your skin needs extra moisture. • La Biosthétique Clair de Teint Clarifiant Cleanser – A gentle yet powerful cleanser that keeps skin fresh and clear without stripping it. It’s brilliant for anyone prone to congestion or post-shave bumps. • La Biosthétique Traitement Hydratant Cream – A beautiful daily moisturiser that locks in hydration and leaves the skin soft and silky. It’s lightweight, but it gives long-lasting comfort — ideal for post-laser care. I love that these products fit into a busy lifestyle. As a single mum running a business, I don’t have time for complicated 10-step routines. I need skincare that works — and La Biosthétique delivers. It’s that simple.

Self-care doesn’t have to mean spending hours on beauty rituals. It’s about doing the small things that make you feel like you again. For some people, that’s skincare. For others, it’s getting rid of that one thing that’s been holding them back — like unwanted hair or skin insecurities.

A Little Self-Care Goes a Long Way Running Sphynx Laser and AJMR Studios while being a mum means life can get hectic, but I’ve learned that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish — it’s necessary. Whether it’s a relaxing facial, a quiet

That’s what I love about laser. It’s not just about smooth legs or hair-free underarms — it’s about giving people the confidence to walk out the door feeling empowered, fresh, and free.

Why I Opened AJMR Studios Opening AJMR Studios in Waterloo, Crosby, was one of the scariest but most rewarding things I’ve ever done. As a single mum, I wanted to build something that wasn’t just a business — but a space where people could come, relax, and feel looked after. I know how personal beauty treatments can be. It’s not just about the physical results — it’s about trust, comfort, and connection. That’s what I wanted AJMR to be. When my clients walk through the door, I want them to feel safe, understood, and excited to invest in themselves. Whether someone’s coming in for a full Sphynx Laser course or just popping by for advice on

skincare, my goal is always the same — to help them leave feeling confident and cared for.

Real Confidence Starts With You The truth is, confidence doesn’t come from a bottle or a treatment — it comes from you. But the right treatments and products can absolutely help you feel like your best self. Laser hair removal gave me that boost. It helped me feel more feminine, polished, and comfortable in my own skin. And when you start to feel that way, everything else — your posture, your mood, your energy — follows. My clients often tell me that after finishing their laser course, they feel lighter, more put-together, and free. It’s amazing how something so simple can have such a powerful impact.

Final Thoughts — From Me to You If there’s one thing I’ve learned through my journey, it’s that self-care isn’t a luxury — it’s an act of self-respect.

You deserve to feel confident in your skin, no matter who you are or what your routine looks like. Laser hair removal isn’t just about beauty — it’s about empowerment. It’s about saying goodbye to irritation and inconvenience, and hello to confidence, smoothness, and time for the things you actually enjoy. Pair that with a little skincare love (La Biosthétique has my heart!) and a consistent routine, and your skin will thank you. At AJMR Studios, through Sphynx Laser, I get to help people experience that every day — and it’s honestly the best feeling in the world. So if you’ve been thinking about trying laser hair removal, or you’re ready to invest in better skin, consider this your sign. You deserve to look good, feel confident, and love the skin you’re in. inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, acne, and psoriasis. So, how do you protect your skin, support its health, and even reverse some of the signs of aging during the cooler months?

G E N E R A L H E A LTH

It’s All About Pre-Juvenation Pre-juvenation is a proactive approach to skincare that focuses on preserving skin health and stimulating collagen before aging signs become deeply etched. This means using skincare and aesthetic treatments that encourage your skin to work for itself—specifically, to make and bank collagen.

Understanding Collagen Loss by Age From the age of 20, we naturally lose about 1% of collagen per year. Here’s a breakdown: • Age 20s: Collagen starts to decline (~1%/year). By 30, you may have lost 10% of your total supply. • Age 30s–40s: Collagen loss increases to 1–1.5% per year. Fine lines, dullness, and reduced elasticity become noticeable. • Age 50+: Oestrogen decline during menopause accelerates collagen loss—up to 30% lost in the first 5 years post-menopause.

My Favourite In-Clinic Collagen-Stimulating Treatments 1. Polynucleotides (“Salmon Sperm” Treatment) These are tiny fragments of DNA derived from fish that stimulate fibroblasts—cells vital for repair and collagen synthesis. Best used for: • Under eye & upper eyelids: Hydrates, improves skin tone, reduces fine lines and dark circles. • Jowl area: Combined with hyaluronic acid to improve skin firmness and hydration.

Key Collagen Killers: • Natural aging • UV exposure (photoaging is the #1 preventable cause) • Smoking • Poor diet (low in protein, vitamin C, and antioxidants) • Pollution and oxidative stress • Lack of sleep and chronic stress

• With microneedling: Treats acne scars, trauma scars, and hyperpigmentation by boosting skin turnover and improving texture.

2. Injected in a 5-point pattern, Profhilo spreads evenly through the skin, creating a “scaffold” for regeneration.

But don’t forget: Wear SPF 50 daily, regardless of season or weather!

Your Seasonal Skincare Essentials Support collagen and skin barrier health with these powerhouse ingredients:

Vitamin C • Brightens skin, reduces inflammation • Promotes collagen synthesis • Fights oxidative stress

To Summarise: 7 Best Ways to Boost Collagen 1. Daily SPF 30–50 – essential for prevention 2. Topical retinoids/retinol – proven collagen stimulators 3. Vitamin C serums – for collagen synthesis & protection 4. Peptides in skincare – signal skin to produce collagen 5. Microneedling, radiofrequency, laser – powerful in-clinic options

Collagen & Skin Health Starts From Within

6. Stay hydrated + high-protein diet – fuel skin from within

Your skin is your largest organ, and its health is a direct reflection of your internal wellbeing. The phrase “Get the inside right and the outside follows” couldn’t be more true.

7. Collagen supplements – support from the inside out

If your skin is changing—persistent rashes, new lesions, or non-healing spots—don’t ignore it. Book a check-up. These can be signs of underlying health issues.

s we enter the final stretch of the season, the Premier League is really beginning to heat up, with various battles unfolding across the table. With only eight matchdays remaining, the top flight of English football is once again proving to be one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world.

S P O RT S

The 2025/26 season has already delivered shocks, dramatic moments and fierce rivalries, with even more still to come before the campaign reaches its conclusion. At the same time, several Premier League clubs are competing in European competitions, further reinforcing the strength and depth of the league on the continental stage.

Europe after winning the Bundesliga Player of the Season award in 2023/24. Arsenal also began the season among the favourites after several impressive campaigns under manager Mikel Arteta. The Gunners had finished second in each of the previous three seasons, narrowly missing out on the title despite consistently producing some of the best defensive performances in the league.

The Title Race Before the start of the season, many experts predicted the title would be contested by three familiar contenders: Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool. Liverpool entered the campaign as favourites after lifting the Premier League trophy in the 2024/25 season and strengthening their squad significantly in the summer transfer window. The Reds brought in high-profile signings including Alexander Isak from Newcastle United and Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Isak had already proven himself in the Premier League after scoring 23 goals the previous season, while Wirtz arrived as one of the most exciting young midfielders in

Goalkeeper David Raya had won the Golden Glove in the last two seasons, highlighting Arsenal’s defensive strength. In the summer they reinforced their squad further, bringing in players such as Martín Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyökeres. Many believed Gyökeres could be the striker Arsenal had been missing and the final piece required to finally end their long wait for a league title. Meanwhile, Manchester City were aiming to add yet another championship to their collection. Having dominated English football for much of the last decade, Pep Guardiola’s side strengthened again with signings such as Gianluigi Donnarumma and Rayan Cherki, while Ballon d’Or winner Rodri returned from a long injury absence after tearing his ACL in September 2024. However, after 30 games played, the Premier League table has taken a slightly different shape than many expected. Arsenal currently sit top of the league with 67 points from 30 matches. They have lost only three games all season and once again boast one of the strongest defensive records in the league. Despite injuries to key defenders such as Gabriel and William Saliba at times, the Gunners have remained consistent and resilient. Arsenal fans will be hopeful that this could finally be the season they lift the Premier League trophy for the first time since 2004. Manchester City sit in second place on 60 points, seven points behind Arsenal but with a game in hand. Guardiola’s side remain one of the most 138

dangerous attacking teams in the league, with Erling Haaland continuing to lead the scoring charts. Midfielder Phil Foden has also been in impressive form, while summer signing Rayan Cherki has provided creativity and assists from midfield. With eight matches still remaining, City will believe they are still capable of mounting another late title challenge. One of the most impressive teams this season has been Aston Villa. After a slow start that saw them struggle to find the back of the net in the opening matches, Unai Emery’s side have surged up the table and currently sit fourth with 51 points, level with Manchester United. Villa have already recorded notable victories against Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United this season. England international Morgan Rogers has been a key player during their strong run of form, contributing goals and assists as Villa push for another season of European football. Manchester United currently occupy third place, also with 51 points, and will be aiming to secure Champions League football next season. Their campaign has had moments of inconsistency, but strong performances against several top teams have kept them firmly in the race for a top-four finish. Last season’s champions Liverpool have endured a more difficult campaign than many expected. Despite winning their opening five matches of the season, including victories against Arsenal and Everton, a difficult spell between September and November saw them lose crucial games at Anfield against teams such as Brentford, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, as well as away defeats to

manager Enzo Maresca after a poor run of form. Liam Rosenior was appointed as his replacement and will be hoping to guide the club to a strong finish to the season.

Whether Arsenal can finally get over the line or if Manchester City can chase them down in the final weeks remains one of the biggest questions heading into the closing stages of the season.

Liverpool are level on points with Chelsea and remain within touching distance of the top four. With the attacking talent at their disposal, they will still believe they can climb further up the table before the season ends.

Battle for European Places

Just behind them are Brentford and Everton, who have both impressed throughout the campaign.

Due to English clubs consistently performing well in European competitions such as the Champions League and Europa League, as many as seven Premier League teams could qualify for Europe depending on domestic cup results. As a result, the race for these places is extremely tight. Only a handful of points separate several teams in the middle of the table, meaning a strong run of results can dramatically change the standings. Chelsea currently sit fifth with 48 points and remain firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification. Their season has been somewhat inconsistent, however, and earlier in the campaign the club made the decision to part ways with

Brentford, currently sitting seventh, have been driven by the excellent form of Brazilian forward Igor Thiago. After struggling with injuries during his first season at the club, he has enjoyed a breakthrough year and has been one of the league’s most prolific goal scorers.

Sunderland secured a 1-0 victory over fierce rivals Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light. The atmosphere inside the stadium was electric and the result will live long in the memories of the club’s supporters.

Everton, meanwhile, have started a new chapter in their history after moving into their new stadium, Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool. The atmosphere created by the fans has been remarkable, with the stadium already producing several memorable moments. Under the management of David Moyes, Everton have looked far more competitive than in previous seasons and fans will be hoping they can return to European football for the first time since the 2017/18 season.

The Relegation Fight

Newly promoted Sunderland have also exceeded expectations this season. Many fans predicted they would struggle to survive in the Premier League after returning to the top flight for the first time since 2017. However, an impressive summer transfer window and strong performances under manager Régis Le Bris have helped them establish themselves comfortably in mid-table. One of the most memorable moments of their season came in the Tyne-Wear derby when

At the opposite end of the table, the battle to avoid relegation remains just as intense. Currently occupying the bottom three places are West Ham United in 18th, Burnley in 19th and

S P O RT S

Wolverhampton Wanderers in 20th. Wolves have endured a particularly difficult season and currently sit bottom of the league with only 16 points from 30 matches. Their poor start included one of the worst runs of results in Premier League history, collecting just two points from their opening ten games. Burnley have also struggled in their return to the top flight. After winning promotion under manager Scott Parker, the Lancashire club have found life

in the Premier League far more challenging and currently sit on 19 points. West Ham sit just inside the relegation zone but still remain within reach of safety with 28 points. However, their recent run of form has been worrying, with several defeats against fellow relegation candidates putting them under increasing pressure. Just above the relegation zone are Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, who will also be looking

nervously over their shoulders as the season approaches its conclusion. If the current standings remain unchanged, it would be the first time in three seasons that only one newly promoted side is relegated, after the previous two campaigns saw all three promoted teams drop straight back down to the Championship. With just eight matches remaining, the Premier League season is approaching a dramatic conclusion. Arsenal are currently in the strongest position to win the title, but Manchester City remain close enough to apply pressure in the final weeks. At the same time, the race for European qualification is tighter than ever, while several clubs are locked in a tense fight to avoid relegation. If the first 30 games of the season are anything to go by, the final weeks of the Premier League campaign promise to deliver plenty more excitement, unpredictability and unforgettable moments.

COMOLETICS: WHERE PERFORMANCE MEETS PURPOSE B Y ZACH K H A N

I

t began with a moment. Not a business plan. Not a funding pitch. Just a moment of sunlight cutting through the Alpine air, the glint of water off Lake Como’s surface, and the silent promise of a new day. There, in Northern Italy, surrounded by nature’s effortless elegance and timeless masculinity, the seeds of Comoletics were planted.

160

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

Today, Comoletics isn’t just another activewear label. It’s a movement, a call to men who seek not just to look good or move well, but to feel something deeper: confidence with purpose, performance with meaning, and a connection to community.

M E N S AC TI V E W EA R

From Lake Como, With Intention The name Comoletics fuses two seemingly separate ideas: Lake Como, with its luxurious calm and stoic energy, and athletics, the spirit of movement, sweat, and drive. But for founder Zach Khan, the brand was never about blending opposites. It was about uncovering what unites them. “On that trip to Lake Como, I realised how little we as men give ourselves permission to slow down,” he recalls. “We’re always chasing, working & building. But what if the confidence we’re after isn’t in the hustle, what if it’s in the stillness? The lake, the mountains, the architecture, it all moved with purpose. That’s the kind of movement I wanted to build into a brand.” That insight became Comoletics’ guiding principle: Performance Wear With Purpose. The result is a label that doesn’t just create premium men’s activewear, it creates pieces that empower. Designs that move as well in the gym as they do in life. Pieces you can sweat in, breathe in, live in.

Confidence Is the New Muscle In an era where men’s fashion is evolving rapidly, from tailored suits to loungewear, from rigid masculinity to fluid expression. Comoletics is carving its own lane. It’s not just about functionality. Nor is it about empty aesthetics. It’s about confidence, the kind built not in boardrooms or weight rooms, but in intention. “Confidence isn’t about being the loudest guy in the room anymore,” Zach explains. “It’s about being clear on who you are, how you move, and what you

stand for. Comoletics clothes are designed to help you walk into that version of yourself.” This is where Comoletics shines: the brand has managed to thread the needle between minimalist luxury and performance-grade utility. The fabrics are engineered for stretch, sweat-wicking, and breathability, but the cuts and colour palettes nod to timeless European refinement. Think training shorts that look just as good at brunch. Or sweatwicking Ts that transition seamlessly from morning runs to client meetings. It’s gym to streetwear but elevated.

Design That Doesn’t Just Look Good, It Works Comoletics’ design DNA is unmistakable: clean lines, purposeful seams, tonal hues, and a focus on fit that flatters all body types, not just the shredded elite. There’s an understated confidence to every piece. A quiet nod to those who don’t need to scream to be seen. Every collection is built around the idea of intentional movement. Whether you’re lifting, running, meditating, or simply walking through your day, the gear is made to support, not overshadow. It’s performance wear that respects the man wearing it. The Como Gym Shorts offer four-way stretch, sweat dispersion tech, and a tailored cut that sits perfectly on the thigh flattering without suffocating. The Varenna Windbreaker is windproof and waterresistant yet breathable enough for high-output activities.

The Como Gym Tshirt, has become a best-seller not just for its featherweight comfort, but because it fits like a second skin.

Rooted in Community, Designed for Life Community isn’t an afterthought, it’s a cornerstone. Comoletics was built around the idea that movement is more powerful when it’s shared. Whether it’s through local events, online activity, or simply seeing another man in a Comoletics piece and nodding in recognition, the brand fosters a sense of belonging in a space that often feels isolating. “I wanted Comoletics to feel like a team, not a label,” Zach shares. “A team where every man, no matter his shape, background, or journey, feels seen and supported.” This ethos has cultivated a loyal base of wearers; men who come for the gear but stay for the mission. They’re CEOs and creatives, fathers and students, runners and lifters. What unites them isn’t how they look, but how they live with purpose, clarity, and quiet confidence.

162

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

Design Forward, Always While the heart of Comoletics is rooted in purpose, the brand is no slouch when it comes to aesthetic innovation. The design team draws inspiration from architecture (especially the symmetry and serenity of Northern Italy), streetwear, and Scandinavian minimalism. The result? Pieces that never shout but always speak. A capsule wardrobe for the modern man who demands form and function in equal measure. Upcoming collections will see more layering options, tailored outerwear for transitional seasons, and expanded sizing to reflect the brand’s commitment to inclusivity. But what won’t change is the design discipline: every stitch must serve a purpose. Every fabric must feel good. Every item must elevate not complicate a man’s life.

Why Comoletics Matters Now In 2026, we’re in a new era of masculinity; one defined not by aggression or stoicism, but by selfawareness, balance, and connection. Comoletics is helping redefine what it means to dress that kind of man.

M E N S AC TI V E W EA R

It’s not about being the best in the gym. It’s about showing up for your goals, your values, your people. It’s not about flexing. It’s about flowing with your purpose, your body, your day. And in a world full of disposable fast fashion and empty branding, Comoletics offers something rare: substance.

Final Word: Beyond the Brand Comoletics isn’t trying to dress everyone. It’s for men who move with purpose. Who crave simplicity, quality, and community. Who believe performance isn’t just measured in reps or speed but in intention.

It’s not just activewear. It’s a reflection. A reminder. A recalibration.

It’s gear for the man becoming his best version not because society told him to, but because he chose to.

So whether you’re smashing a 5K, heading to the gym, chasing your kids, or building your business Comoletics is there, moving with you, reminding you that how you show up matters.

and teach my first padel classes as a coach at the Manchester City football team’s sports facilities, where they had an indoor court. I was able to make a group of friends and we began training together and competing nationally. We travelled around the country, getting to know the clubs that were slowly opening up. When I travelled to tournaments, I realised that the sport had a small but growing following, some grassroots clubs, some tennis courts or converted indoor courts, and a huge untapped potential. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) had only just begun formally regulating the sport at the national level. At that time, participation was low: around 15,000 adults and young people played padel at least once a year. The court infrastructure was very modest; it’s estimated there were dozens rather than hundreds. From 2019 to 2021, I saw on my travels how the growth was gradual but promising. The number of courts increased from approximately 50 in 2019 to around 150 in 2021, and participation followed a similar upward trajectory from approximately 15,000 players in 2019 to around 89,000 in 2021, having played at least once. The LTA, recognising the potential, began laying the groundwork: developing coaching structures, exploring facility expansion, and beginning to consider padel more seriously as a complementary racquet sport to tennis.

By 2022, the conditions were set for more rapid expansion. More courts, more publicity, more venue operators seeing opportunity. Demand was increasingly visible, people searching for fun alternatives, more social forms of sport, racket sports that weren’t as technically or physically intimidating to start with. Regions outside London, including the North West, began to see interest. But Manchester in particular was just on the threshold of what was to come.

SMASH & SOCIAL: MANCHESTER’S PADEL BOOM SINCE 2022 When The Padel Club, following the trend set in the rest of the country, opened its doors in July 2022 in Wilmslow, it was one of the first dedicated padel venues in the North West, and where I truly saw the beginning of the padel boom in and around Manchester, where interest in the sport began to grow and people began demanding more. It started with just two courts, but demand was overwhelming, reservations quickly sold out, and within months, operators doubled their size to four courts. All of this prompted new clubs to jump on board and open their doors quickly. Since 2022, Manchester has experienced a wave of court construction, facility expansion, and investment.

But this is where my story as Manchester’s first padel coach begins: Club de Padel, the first padel club in Manchester city centre, opened its doors in December 2023 with four outdoor courts on Deansgate and I would be the padel head coach. With this landmark launch, the expansion of padel in Manchester became unstoppable, and I was at the centre of it. During those first months, I introduced the sport to thousands of new players, who came every day fascinated by this new sport and its engaging social aspect. For me, the keys to padel’s success are: Accessibility for all: It’s an easy sport to learn, even for people with no previous experience in racket sports. It’s played in pairs, which reduces individual pressure and encourages fun. It doesn’t require extreme physical fitness to start, making it inclusive for all ages. Small court dimensions: The courts are smaller than tennis courts, allowing for more courts to be built in limited urban spaces. The game is more dynamic and offers greater interaction, making it attractive for spectators. Social component: It’s played in doubles, making it ideal for socialising. Many clubs have added leisure spaces, bars, and meeting areas around the courts. It has become a popular activity for after-work and weekend getaways. Virality: Once someone starts playing, they often invite friends or family to try it out. Social media has helped popularise the sport with videos of spectacular plays and aspirational content.

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

Immediate fun: From the first match, the game can be enjoyed without a steep learning curve. It’s a sport with a steady pace and many spectacular plays (thanks to the walls). Overall, data from mid-2025 shows Greater Manchester with approximately 74 padel courts spread across 23 venues, with plans to add another 27 courts across three locations by autumn 2025. If these projects are completed, Manchester would exceed 100 courts in total. Another revealing fact is that approximately 59% of Manchester’s courts are covered or indoor. This reflects both the climate and the year-round demand for play. A good example of this expansion is the club where I currently work as head coach, Carbon Padel Club, which has 11 indoor courts, 9 doubles and 2 singles, making it the largest padel facility in the North West.

PLAYERS, PARTICIPATION & THE SOCIAL PULL National Momentum, Local Ripples Nationally, padel’s numbers have been surging. By the end of 2024, just over 400,000 adults and juniors in Britain had played padel at least once in the previous 12 months. Court infrastructure followed: 893 courts across ~300 venues. The LTA’s strategy aims to increase annual players from ~129,000 (end2023) to 400,000, monthly

players from ~65,000 to 200,000, and courts from ~350 to 1,000. Manchester is firmly part of this push.

The Social Pull: More Than Just Sport What is striking about padel’s evolution in Manchester since 2022 is the degree to which it is becoming a social phenomenon, not just a sport. Social hubs & lifestyle elements: Facilities are being built with clubhouses, cafés, lounges, outdoor social spaces. The idea is that people come to play and hang out. Events and community activation: Padel clubs host social tournaments and family sessions. These types of events help attract people who may not be looking for serious training, but are interested in socialising through sport. Accessibility of courts and formats: Covered courts help deal with Manchester’s less predictable weather. “Pay and play” options (not just membership) lower barriers.

Beginner and casual players driving growth: Many first timers are coming because padel is viewed as more approachable than tennis: doubles format, smaller court, less pressure, more immediate play.

CHALLENGES, OUTLOOK & THE ROAD AHEAD FOR MANCHESTER Challenges Even amidst fast growth, Manchester’s padel scene faces challenges: Capacity vs Peak Demand: Many existing courts are booked out during evenings and weekends. Players often need to plan well ahead. Indoor or covered courts are especially in demand where weather constraints make outdoor courts less usable. Cost of Infrastructure: Building high-spec covered courts, installing good lighting, maintaining courts, and creating social facilities (clubhouses, lounges) requires large upfront investment and ongoing cost. That may drive higher usage fees, membership

charges, or minimum spend requirements, which may exclude some potential players.

expect more venues built from scratch with all the amenities, rather than converted ones.

Balancing Social vs Competitive Uses: As popularity grows, demand for competitive play (tournaments, leagues) may strain the availability of courts for casual/social users. Maintaining a balance so that the sport remains inclusive and accessible is an important managerial challenge for venue operators.

Expansion of covered/indoor courts: Because of Manchester’s climate and the demand for year-round play, the share of courts that are indoor or at least covered will continue to increase.

Site, Planning, and Real Estate Constraints: Finding appropriate sites (especially for indoor / covered courts), securing planning permission (noise, lighting, structure), negotiating with real estate owners or local authorities are often timeconsuming and costly. Projects like Victoria North are tied into larger regeneration plans to help with this. Maintaining Quality & Experience: With so many courts being built in different places, ensuring consistent surface quality, coaching availability, lighting, hygiene and overall user experience will be vital to making sure people return.

Outlook & What to Watch Looking forward from 2025 and into 2026, here’s what seems likely in Manchester: Court numbers exceeding 100: With the +27 planned courts, Manchester is on track to surpass 100 courts in Greater Manchester across all venue types (indoor, covered, outdoor) by late 2025. More large-scale, purpose-built facilities: Facilities like Carbon Padel Club set new standards. We can

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

Growth in monthly / frequent players: As awareness continues and accessibility improves, more people will move from “played once” to “play monthly” or “play weekly.” Nationally, Sport England data already shows those playing twice monthly doubled from ~23,000 (2022/23) to ~51,000 (2023/24). Manchester will likely mirror or exceed this trend. Social & Community Integration: More events, more mixed use of venues (social, food, drink, music nights, social leagues), more family / junior offerings. There also seems to be a desire by operators to make the venues part of the local identity. Policy Support & Local Plans: Manchester is the first city in Britain to have a “local padel plan” in collaboration with the LTA, Manchester City Council and Manchester Active. This should help align future facility development with planning policy, transport access, and public health / leisure strategies.

Why It Matters: The Social Shift The rise of padel in Manchester is not just about more courts or more players, it’s about how sport is evolving socially:

PA DE L

People increasingly look for leisure activities that combine activity + socialising + lifestyle. Padel offers that trifecta. For many, padel is less intimidating than other racket sports. You can play with friends, meet new people, not worry too much about technical perfection. Sports venues are becoming places to hang out, not just to train. The investment in social spaces, food/ drink, events, spectator-friendly design shows that clubs understand they are building communities, not just courts. There is also a wellness angle: people are more interested in enjoyable, sustainable physical activity rather than only gym or high-intensity competition. Padel gives cardio, coordination, social interaction, fun.

THE FUTURE Since 2022, the padel scene in Manchester has transformed fast. What began with a couple of courts and curious locals has become a vibrant network of venues, social spaces, and a growing community of players—casual, curious, competitive. With nearly 74 courts and 23 venues, plus more under way, Manchester is becoming one of the leading hubs of padel in the UK. All signs suggest growth will continue if done with attention to access, affordability, and quality. If those are managed well, padel in Manchester may not just be a boom, but a sustainable fixture in the region’s sporting and social life; one where people play, meet, hang out, and stay active, not just for a season, but for many years to come.

REFORMER OR RESISTANCE TRAINING? WHY THE SMARTEST APPROACH IS A HYBRID ONE B Y STEVEN D O BIE

f you live anywhere in the North West, you’ve probably noticed a rise in Reformer Pilates studios over the past year. Right across the region, the sleek machines are filling up fast

— and for good reason. Pilates has become a go-to method for strengthening the core, easing back pain, and improving posture. But with this surge comes the inevitable question:

FI T N ES S

Is Reformer Pilates better than traditional resistance training? As a Personal Trainer who specialises in corrective exercise and uses both training methods daily, I genuinely believe each has huge benefits. For the

past seven years, I’ve owned my personal training studio, Dobie Optimum Fitness. Back in 2022 — before the big Reformer boom — I introduced Reformer-based corrective exercise to help clients get better, faster results. As a Level 4 Pilates instructor and qualified Reformer teacher, I began offering 1:1 PT Reformer sessions alongside my traditional resistance programmes. Working with clients across Liverpool and Cheshire, I can confidently say this: it’s not about choosing one or the other — it’s about combining them. When used together, they create one of the most balanced, effective, and sustainable ways to train.

Building Strong Foundations You wouldn’t build a house on soft ground without preparing it first — and the body works the same way. Reformer Pilates lays the foundation: core strength, alignment, stability, and control. Resistance training then builds the structure on top: muscle, power, and long-term resilience.

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

171

F I TNE SS Pilates teaches your body how to move well, how to recruit the right muscles, and how the biomechanics of movement work. Resistance training teaches your body how to handle load and keep progressing. The real magic happens when you apply a blended approach of the two.

Is Reformer Pilates Considered Strength Training? Reformer Pilates uses a spring-loaded carriage or Cadillac to create controlled resistance. While it doesn’t replace the sheer load of barbells, dumbbells, or machines, it offers something equally valuable — and often missing. Reformer develops the muscles and movement patterns that many people skip in the gym. It strengthens the deep core stabilisers, gets the glutes firing to support hip stability, improves mobility through the thoracic spine, and enhances control through the lumbopelvic region. It even teaches you how to breathe effectively under tension — a skill most lifters don’t realise they’re lacking. These qualities translate beautifully into your lifting. With improved alignment and control, you’re far more likely to maintain a neutral spine under heavy load, brace without wasting energy, and reduce issues like knee valgus. You’ll also find the bar path feels smoother and more controlled, with your joints staying in the right position through each rep — ultimately making your training safer and more efficient.

Why Hybrid Training Works So Well A hybrid programme — combining Pilates and resistance training — gives you the best of both worlds. Clients feel the difference almost immediately, and the results often speak for themselves. 1. More Efficient Strength Development When your stabilisers are strong, your lifts instantly improve. Stable hips, a switched-on core, and good spinal control all contribute to lifting heavier, more confidently, and far more safely.

172

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

2. Technique That Actually Sticks Pilates slows everything down — and I’m always telling clients, “When you feel like you’re going slow, go even slower.” It teaches you what good movement feels like. This transfers directly to your squats, presses, and deadlifts, boosting mind– muscle connection and ensuring you’re using the right muscles for each movement. 3. Better Mobility & Recovery Instead of taking two complete rest days, many clients now take a Pilates day. It keeps them moving without overloading the joints, promotes active recovery, and encourages better long-term habits. 4. Reduced Injury Risk Poor alignment and weak stabilisers are two of the biggest contributors to gym injuries. Pilates directly targets both. It has been shown to reduce chronic joint pain, strengthen key supporting muscles, and build durable movement patterns. 5. Balanced, Aesthetic Results Resistance training builds muscle; Pilates fine-tunes posture, symmetry, and core definition. Together, they create a strong, athletic, well-balanced physique. 6. Long-Term Sustainability Hybrid training is varied, engaging, joint-friendly, and enjoyable — which is why clients stick with it for far longer than they do with traditional gym-only routines

The Verdict Reformer Pilates and resistance training aren’t rivals — they’re teammates. When paired together, they create a training approach that is strong, stable, powerful, and functional. If you want to lift heavier, move better, reduce injuries, or simply feel more aligned in daily life, a hybrid training programme may be the most effective path you can take. Whether you’re stepping into a boutique Reformer studio or hitting the weights in one of the region’s many gyms, combining these two methods could be the smartest fitness decision you make this year. Don’t just take my word for it — try it for yourself. You can thank me later.

recovery. Known for its peaceful atmosphere, ESPA treatments, and attentive service, the spa offers a space where guests can unwind in complete comfort. Now, Maya Blue Wellness is extending that sense of care even further. Through specialist training and collaboration with The Amethyst Trust, the spa has introduced treatments that are safe and supportive for guests who are undergoing, or have completed, cancer treatment. This development made Maya Blue Wellness the first spa in Liverpool to offer these adapted therapies in June 2023. Identifying a Gap in Care The decision to introduce specialist treatments came from Spa Manager Sophie McDermott and her team’s growing awareness of how often guests affected by cancer were unable to book treatments.

It’s a situation faced by many spas across the country. Until recently, most wellness professionals were taught to avoid treating anyone with a cancer diagnosis due to safety concerns and lack of guidance. As Sophie and her team noticed the number of affected guests increasing, they saw a clear need to make a change. “Some of our guests were in remission, some were still in treatment, and others were just looking for something comforting to help them feel like themselves again,” Sophie says. “We didn’t want to keep saying no when there was a safe, professional way to say yes.” Specialist Training with The Amethyst Trust

“We had a lot of guests we were having to turn away because we didn’t have anyone qualified to treat them safely,” Sophie explains. “People would fill out their consultation form and tick the box for cancer. That was sometimes the first time we had been aware, and it meant we couldn’t go ahead with the booking. None of us felt comfortable doing that, but without the right training, it wouldn’t have been safe.”

To bridge that gap, Maya Blue Wellness partnered with The Amethyst Trust, an organisation that provides nationally recognised training for spa therapists treating clients affected by cancer. Supported by ESPA, The Amethyst Trust delivers the Standards Authority for Touch in Cancer Care

(SATCC) course — the industry benchmark for safe and effective cancer care training in spas. In spring 2023, Sophie arranged for two members of her team to complete the SATCC course at the ESPA Training Academy in Northwich.

FE AT U RE

“They had to sit an exam just to get on the course,” she explains. “The training covered everything — theory, practical techniques, consultation skills, and an understanding of medical terminology. It really gave them confidence to approach every client as an individual and to adapt their treatments properly.” The course teaches therapists how to assess medical conditions, identify potential risks, and modify treatments accordingly. It covers topics such as lymphatic drainage, medication interaction, and how different cancer treatments can affect the body. “A lot of people don’t realise that some treatments can have unintended effects,” Sophie says. “For example, chemotherapy can make skin extremely sensitive, so not all products or techniques are suitable. If someone has had lymph nodes removed, you have to change how you do a massage, because the body processes fluid differently. Every case is unique.” Adapting Treatments for Individual Needs The new training has enabled the spa to safely adapt several of its ESPA treatments. Maya Blue Wellness now offers three therapies that can be

customised for guests affected by cancer — the Inner Beauty Facial, the Inner Calm Full Body Massage, and the ESPA Back, Face and Scalp Massage, which remains one of the spa’s signature experiences. Each treatment begins with an in-depth consultation, allowing therapists to understand the guest’s medical history, medication, and current wellbeing. From there, the approach is personalised — whether that means adjusting the pressure, the positioning of the client, or the products used. “Someone who’s had surgery, such as a mastectomy, might need more cushioning on one side or prefer us to avoid that area altogether,” Sophie explains. “Others may feel self-conscious because of scars or physical changes. Having a therapist who understands and responds with sensitivity makes a huge difference to their experience.” The adaptations extend beyond the treatment table. Guests who may have limited mobility or require additional equipment, such as oxygen support, can still enjoy a relaxing and safe visit. “We’ve had guests come in who were seriously unwell,” Sophie says. “They might have medical

equipment with them, or they may not be able to lie flat. Before, a therapist might not have known how to handle that. Now, we can make sure they still get the benefit of the treatment.” Positive Feedback and Growing Demand The response to these new treatments has been overwhelmingly positive. Since launching the adapted ESPA therapies in 2023, the spa has seen a steady increase in demand. “We noticed more and more guests coming to us who had been through cancer treatment,” Sophie says. “Rates of cancer are increasing, and people are more open about looking for ways to look after themselves. Being part of the Titanic Hotel means we also get guests coming for a break away during or after treatment, so having these options available makes a big difference.” The feedback, she says, has been “incredibly touching.” One experience in particular stands out. “A guest booked a treatment for her husband, who was at a hospice. It was around Father’s Day. He came in, used the facilities, and had a massage. He was over the moon — you could tell it meant so much to both of them. They didn’t think it would be possible. That really showed us how important this is.” 178

LANCASHIRE

F I T N E S S MAGAZINE

The success of the programme has led Maya Blue Wellness to expand the training further. Two additional therapists are set to complete their SATCC certification in the coming months, ensuring that the spa can accommodate more guests safely and effectively. Raising the Standard for Inclusive Wellness The introduction of cancer-safe treatments aligns with Maya Blue Wellness’s broader goal of making wellness more inclusive. For Sophie, it’s about ensuring that no one feels excluded from the spa environment because of their medical history. “It’s not about creating a separate service,” she explains. “It’s about making sure our treatments and our team are inclusive. We want everyone to feel comfortable and confident that they’re in safe hands.” The initiative also reinforces the spa’s commitment to professional excellence. Maya Blue Wellness holds a 5 Bubble Rating from the Good Spa Guide Awards, recognising its standards of care, staff expertise, and guest experience. By completing SATCC training and integrating it into everyday practice, the spa is helping to set a benchmark for others in the industry.

FE AT U RE

“For a long time, people with cancer were told they couldn’t have spa treatments,” Sophie says. “Now we know that, with the right knowledge, they can — and they should. It’s about bringing back that sense of wellbeing and normality.” A Calming Environment The environment at Maya Blue Wellness plays an important role in the overall experience. Located in the lower level of Titanic Hotel Liverpool, the spa combines original 19th-century dock architecture with contemporary design. Exposed brickwork, arching ceilings, and soft lighting create a sense of stillness that contrasts with the city above. Facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, thermal suite, sauna, steam room, and relaxation areas. Treatments are delivered using ESPA’s natural, holistic skincare and body products, which complement the spa’s philosophy of balance and wellbeing. “Our space helps people to relax straight away,” Sophie says. “It’s quiet, warm, and designed for comfort. For guests going through something as challenging as cancer, being in a calm environment really helps them to unwind and feel safe.” Changing Perceptions Across the Industry

Maya Blue Wellness’s work reflects a wider shift in the wellness industry toward education and inclusivity. The collaboration between ESPA, The Amethyst Trust, and SATCC is part of a national effort to ensure that guests with medical conditions can access safe, supportive spa experiences. The SATCC framework was established by industry leaders to remove the uncertainty surrounding cancer and touch therapy. By providing accredited training, it ensures that therapists understand how to work responsibly with clients affected by cancer, rather than automatically excluding them. Sophie believes that awareness is growing, but there’s still work to be done. “There’s definitely more understanding now, but many spas still don’t offer these treatments,” she says. “That’s not because they don’t care — it’s because they’re cautious. Once people realise the training is available and how much it benefits their guests, I think we’ll see more places following suit.” A Message of Care and Confidence For guests, the reassurance that they can safely enjoy a spa experience can be life-changing. Maya Blue Wellness’s approach demonstrates that luxury and safety can go hand in hand.

“It’s about restoring confidence,” Sophie says. “When someone has been through a major illness, they often lose a bit of trust in their body. Being able to have a treatment — to relax, to be cared for — can be a big step toward feeling like themselves again.” The therapists at Maya Blue Wellness share that sense of purpose. “The team loves doing these treatments,” Sophie adds. “It’s meaningful work. They can see the difference it makes to people.” Looking Ahead With additional therapists soon to complete their training, Maya Blue Wellness plans to continue developing its inclusive wellness offering. Sophie hopes to see more collaboration across the spa sector in the years ahead. “Every guest deserves to feel welcome,” she says. “If we can share what we’ve learned and encourage other spas to do the same, then that’s something

mould to appear, the system identifies unhealthy conditions early—before spores spread and before health is affected. When risk levels rise, tenants receive instant, personalised advice on what action to take. Crucially, this guidance is always relevant to the conditions at that moment. If the air outside is drier, tenants are advised to cross-ventilate. If it’s damp outdoors, they’re guided to use heating or other moisture-reducing methods instead. This removes confusion and ensures the right action is taken at the right time—every time. The health benefits of maintaining balanced indoor air are significant:

stay comfortable for longer—helping cut energy bills while improving comfort. For landlords, weekly reports provide insight into environmental trends, tenant responses, and whether issues stem from behaviour or building defects. This clarity helps prevent disputes, supports targeted maintenance, and avoids costly reactive repairs. The result is a solution that delivers lasting benefits: • Healthier people, with cleaner air and fewer respiratory problems

• Improved respiratory health: Reduced mould spores and dust mites can ease asthma, wheezing, coughing, and breathlessness. • Fewer allergies and irritations: Better air quality helps reduce sneezing, itchy eyes, sinus congestion, and skin flare-ups. • Better sleep and energy levels: Stable indoor conditions support deeper sleep and reduce headaches and fatigue. • Lower infection risk: Drier environments limit the growth of bacteria and viruses that thrive in damp air. • Improved mental wellbeing: Living in a warm, dry home reduces stress and anxiety linked to persistent damp and cold. Small daily habits can significantly reduce damp, improve air quality, and create a healthier living environment. Simple ways to increase ventilation and improve indoor air quality: • Open windows regularly, especially after cooking, showering, or drying clothes indoors. Even 10–15 minutes can help. • Cross-ventilate when possible by opening windows on opposite sides of the home to allow fresh air to flow through. • Use extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms and leave them running for 15–20 minutes after use.

Your gut should be buzzing with good bacteria, creating a healthy environment in which food can be broken down and nutrients absorbed, and where cells belonging to the immune system can happily go about their business. Postbiotics help it to do this. Made when the friendly bacteria in your gut (probiotics) digest and break down fibres (prebiotics), postbiotics are the rather healthy end result. Lending a layer of protection, postbiotic L+ lactic acid creates an environment that unfriendly bacteria and opportunistic fungi such as Candida albicans don’t like, meaning they’re less likely to stick around (quite literally, they’re less able to stick to the gut wall).

HOW THE REGION IS GET TING SHREDDED B Y CHARL IE ALF O NS O

iverpool has always been a city that punches above its weight in music, sport, and now fitness. Few stories capture that spirit better than ShredFast, the homegrown brand that started on Merseyside and has grown into an international name in performance training.

The journey began in 2018 with a simple goal: to create workouts that deliver real results while building a true sense of community. Founder Luke Powell and his team wanted to redefine fitness — making it something people could feel part of, not just show up for. From the very first sessions, the energy was electric. Loud music filled the room,

determination filled the air, and every class became an experience. What started as a local movement quickly became a phenomenon. Liverpool’s tight-knit fitness scene embraced ShredFast as more than a gym — it became a lifestyle. Built on the same values that define the city — grit, humour, and heart — ShredFast represented something bigger than physical training. It was about mindset, belonging, and progress.

Liverpool’s docks, but the mindset is strikingly similar — ambition, resilience, and a drive to be the best. ShredFast Monaco brings that same raw energy and community focus to one of the world’s most exclusive destinations.

In 2022, ShredFast took its first step beyond the UK, opening a flagship location in Dubai. The move marked a bold chapter for the Liverpoolborn brand, and it paid off. Dubai’s hunger for innovation and high-performance living was the perfect match for ShredFast’s philosophy. What began as a local passion project had officially gone global. In 2025, ShredFast expanded again, this time to Monaco. Known for its precision, luxury, and elite standards, Monaco might seem a world away from

F E AT U R E Through every milestone, ShredFast has stayed true to where it came from. Every new studio carries that unmistakable Liverpool DNA: tough, passionate, and unshakably real. The team has never lost sight of what made it special in the first place — a commitment to results, connection, and a sense of belonging that transcends location. As ShredFast continues to grow, it stands as a reminder that the best ideas often start close to home. From the heart of Liverpool to the shores of Monaco, it’s proof that hard work, community, and belief can turn a local dream into a global success story.

SEASONAL SHIFT : HAIR & BEARD TRENDS FOR MEN B Y PE TE CRA NF IELD

ummer still feels like it’s a way off and I’ve been in the puffer gilet and heavier hoodies for months. But this time of year doesn’t just bring a change in wardrobe; it brings a noticeable shift in men’s hair and beard trends too. When the temperature drops, there’s something instinctively comforting about a bit more hair—on both the head and the face. Colder weather often

makes guys want to ditch the ultra-short fades and clean-shaven looks in favour of styles that feel warmer, cosier, and a little more rugged. And honestly? I do exactly the same. This season, we’ve been seeing a strong move towards softer, more textured hairstyles. Think less scalp exposure around the back and sides, and more of that Timothée Chalamet-inspired tousled,

undone vibe. These longer, freer styles give a relaxed but stylish look that pairs perfectly with the layered fits we all gravitate toward once the chill sets in. If you’re planning to keep more length this season, your consultation with your barber is key. Take the time to explain what you’re after in as much detail as possible—bring a reference photo if you can. (Trust me, we don’t judge. In fact, we love it.) A good barber will help tailor the style to your hair type, face shape, and lifestyle, so use that expertise to your advantage.

A fresh hairstyle or beard shape can give you that extra boost until the lighter mornings and evenings really start to hit. Until next time— Stay sharp.

Facial hair is shifting too. Personally, I rocked a clean shave with a standout moustache all summer long and loved the look. But as soon as the biting cold returns, I crave a little extra coverage. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with a short, defined beard paired with a neat moustache—think Jeremy Piven in Mr. Selfridge. It’s classic, masculine, and gives just enough structure without feeling overgrown. The best barbers are constantly keeping an eye on how fashion and grooming trends evolve. We know many of you rely on us not just for a fresh cut, but for expert advice—so don’t be shy about asking. This is the perfect season to try something new.

ith over 4,000 nail salons and bars in England and at least 100 opening every year, the demand is clearly there.

I’m known for my huge long nails but nails of all shapes and sizes are so important.

For me, nails are more than a beauty choice — they’re a form of self-care and self-expression. Whether I’m heading to the gym, a meeting, or simply running errands, having my nails done makes me feel polished, put together, and confident. Interestingly, my nails have become a topic of conversation almost every day. I’m constantly stopped by people asking, “Oh my God, how do you do anything with those nails?” There’s a genuine fascination around them — from their length to their design — and it always makes me smile. What many don’t realise is that extended nails don’t limit you; they simply encourage you to adapt. Just like fitness, once you build strength, coordination, and confidence, everything becomes second nature.

In a world where we’re constantly busy, it’s the small rituals — like sitting down for a fresh set — that allow us to pause, reset, and focus on ourselves. I see nails as an extension of wellness; they reflect discipline, care, and pride in how you present yourself. Just like fitness, consistency matters. Maintaining my nails is part of my routine, alongside training, eating well, and taking time to recharge. When I feel good about the details, that confidence carries through into everything else I do. I’d love to see more people embrace extended nails and double tips — not just as a trend, but as a form of personal expression. Nails don’t have to be practical to be powerful. They can be bold, unapologetic, and a reflection of who you are. Confidence isn’t built only in the gym — it’s built in the habits we choose every day. Natural Look Preferred: Many men express a preference for natural-looking nails that are short to medium in length. Extremely long or gaudy fake nails can be seen as impractical or “high maintenance”.

Individual Taste: Many men acknowledge that nail style is a personal preference for the woman herself, and as long as they find the woman attractive, the specific nails do not matter significantly. Certain colours and styles are associated with particular traits, though these are often based on viral theories or anecdotal claims rather than rigorous “research” in a formal sense. The Red Nail Theory: This viral social media theory suggests that men are more attracted to women wearing red nail polish, as the colour is associated with confidence, femininity, and sensuality.

Colour Meanings: * Red/Fiery Colours: May be perceived as confident and passionate. * Nude/Neutral Colours: Often seen as a “safe,” elegant, or a “rich girl” choice that denotes understated class. * Light Blue: The subject of another viral theory claiming it indicates a woman is in a relationship

Ultimately, opinions are diverse, ranging from total apathy to a keen interest in how nails contribute to a woman’s overall style.
