Striking a balance LIVERPOOL PERSONAL TRAINER
I’M NOW back from my short trip away to Las Vegas. Had an amazing time and the hotel where I stayed (‘Encore’) was fantastic. I’ve never stayed in a place like it! We hired a VIP booth at a nightclub (‘Omnia’ – amazing!), went to a night pool party (amazing again!) and did a bit of gambling and some walking and mooching around. So, all in all, a super trip and we’re already talking about going back for a bit longer. It was actually the first time I’d had a full week off in nine years – absolutely crazy. I’ve done quite a bit of travelling in the past (Brazil, Thailand, China, New York, all across Europe etc) and I kept asking myself, ‘why has it taken me so long to do a trip like this again’? And probably the best answer I could find was that I’d been caught up in a rut. While I’ve had to work so

hard to get myself in the position I’m in today, other areas of my life have suffered and I haven’t really realised it. We probably all do it. It’s not until we do something out of the ordinary or something happens that we realise that an area of our lives is not as good as it should be. Every now and again, all of us will hear somewhere that we need ‘balance’ in our lives and this is so true. But while we neglect some areas in our lives, we also need a break from other areas. This helps us to recharge and gain new focus and clarity on the particular area

that we have had a break from. A little exercise for you: If you do feel that you are neglecting some areas in your life, or maybe you need a break from one or two areas, try this exercise. I use it quite regularly with my clients. Choose eight of the most important areas of your life (e.g. family, friends, career, health and fitness, travel, finance etc). When you have done that, draw a circle, and break it up into eight segments. Put each heading into each segment. Now, if the centre of the circle equals 0 (bad), and the outer
circle equals 10 (amazing), put a dot in each segment to describe how good or bad that area is. When you have done this, pull out one or two segments and write down a goal of how much you want to improve that area. Then break it down into 90 days, 60 days, 30 days and seven days. If you need help with this, please get in touch. It’s a great exercise and I try and go through it with my clients every few months. It’s certainly something that I now need to do for myself more regularly. Hope it helps! Noble ancestors By Stephen Guy
MANY people actively research their family trees to discover the identities of ancestors and how they lived long ago. Virtually all English people are descended from Edward III although only a comparatively small number can trace their connection. It is often impossible to find proof of ancestry going back hundreds of years because, until the compulsory registration of births marriages and deaths from 1837, records were scarce. They were mostly based on parish church documents which remain important sources of information. Another problem was that more than 200 years ago most people could neither read nor write so left no evidence of their lives. People were remembered by their families and friends, of course, but after a generation or two all memory was erased apart
from inscriptions on gravestones, for example. Among exceptions were royalty, aristocracy and landed gentry. They took great pride in family trees because such information backed up claims for titles and property. When vast estates and wealth were at stake it was important to know where you came from. Succession to the throne was disputed and fought over a number of times in the Middle Ages.
Controversial monarchs such as Richard III ensured that potential rivals were eliminated, often in suspicious circumstances. Hugh Molyneux, 7th and last Earl of Sefton, was very proud of his ancestry going back to William de Moulins who fought at the Battle of Hastings when William of Normandy conquered England. Hugh is pictured about 1960 demonstrating his skill with a longbow. His ancestor Sir Richard Molyneux mustered West Derby bowmen to help Henry V’s
victory at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. However, many of these noble ancestors lived lives now largely unknown because records were lost or destroyed. William, the founder of the dynasty, had a son called Vivian who was put in charge of West Derby Castle. Vivian was succeeded by his son Adam who married local heiress Annota le Gernet and became Lord of Sefton and Speke. They had three sons Robert, Gilbert and Henry. King Stephen (1135 – 1154) granted the lordship of Litherland to Robert. When I covered Litherland Urban District Council meetings in 1967, people still had to ask Lord Sefton’s permission to cut a drive to their front gate across the grass verge. n Join the West Derby Society at West Derby Courthouse open 2 pm - 4 pm most Sundays April to October, admission free.
Bespoke Support at Home Service Most of us would prefer to remain in our own homes during later life. After all, home is where the heart is. But what if, due to illness, injury or just getting older, we needed extra help with household cleaning, getting the groceries in, or even help with personal care? What then?
Tyler McMahon charity event AT 2pm on Sunday 12 August, Alder Sports Club will be hosting a charity football game to raise funds for Tyler. The game will be between a select Alder XI and a team from B&M Discount Stores. Little Tyler who lives in Garston is just 6 years old and following a routine eye check he was referred to St Pauls Eye Hospital and diagnosed with a rare condition known as Marfans syndrome. This is a genetic disorder which will affect his eyesight and the connective tissue for the heart
and aorta. The charity event is to raise funds for his treatment and support. The day will feature raffles, a bbq, fun and games. All are welcome, come along to support a great cause and also take in the 60s sounds of the Liverpool Scooter Rally who will be playing northern soul and mod tunes. There is no charge to watch the match, but contributions to the raffles are welcomed.

Sunflowers, scarecrows, seeds and surprises
South Liverpool Photography Society collaboration
SLPS is delighted to be working in collaboration with Croxteth Walled Garden on their first National Garden Scheme opening on 26th August. Members of the photography club have been taking photos of the garden over the months
and will be displaying some of the results at the special opening. The garden, started in 1850, is well stocked with numerous fruit trees and the glasshouses are home to some Liverpool’s famous botanical collections.
Museum breaks visitor record IN the year of the Terracotta The exhibition which is at the Warriors exhibition National Museums Liverpool have attracted more than 3.3 million visitors across its eight venues, its highest ever number.
World Museum has brought in more than £20 million to the local economy. Visitor number have increased by almost one million over the last five years.
BEHIND the garden walls, on one special day in August in Croxteth Park, sunflowers, scarecrows, seeds and surprises will be helping The National Garden Scheme ngs.org.uk to raise money for nursing and healthcare charities. Local children’s nurseries are making garden scarecrows. Visitors will see huge sunflowers grown from tiny seeds, and throughout August can spot the special visitors in the garden which will delight children of all ages. The National Garden Scheme relies on communities of friends, neighbours and families helping to open gardens both large and small to raise charitable funds. Croxteth Park’s Victorian Walled Garden has dozens of local people from the park’s voluntary groups and the local community helping to make one special day, Bank Holiday Sunday 26th August, a wonderful day for visitors to the garden. Last year the National Garden
Scheme, (NGS), throughout Great Britain, raised £3million for nursing and health care charities including Marie Curie, Macmillan Cancer Support, Parkinsons UK and the National Autistic Society. Sunday 26th August from 11.30am to 5pm, Croxteth Park Walled Garden. Adults £3.50, accompanied children free.
Team aims to cut begging LIVERPOOL City Council has put together a team to offer extra help to reduce street begging and address associated anti-social behaviour in the city centre. The aim of the Street Lifestyle Project is to pilot a new way of working that encourages people who are begging on the streets to accept the support they need, to help them to move away from this lifestyle. It is specifically focused on helping those who are begging on
the city streets but who are not sleeping rough. It’s also a response to the concerns of the public and city centre businesses following reports of anti-social behaviour, including aggressive behaviour and drug taking. This year the council will invest more than £11m in preventing and addressing homelessness and supporting rough sleepers.

Run for Rhys Jones RUNNERS, joggers and walkers are invited to take part in the second annual Run For Rhys on Sunday 26 August. The fun run event, which takes place in the grounds of Croxteth Hall and Country Park, is staged to celebrate the life of tragic Croxteth youngster Rhys Jones. This year’s fun run event includes a one-mile run at 11am, followed by a 5K at 12pm. Fun activities for all the family will continue in the afternoon. Eleven-year-old Everton fan Rhys Jones lost his life on 22 August 2007 when he was shot
when walking home from football training in Croxteth. He was innocently caught in the cross-fire between two rival gangs. The team behind the Rhys Jones Community Centre CIC work tirelessly to raise aspirations, give hope and strengthen community unity in Croxteth. Their vision now includes Run For Rhys as a positive legacy event. Run For Rhys has the support of Rhys’ parents, Mel and Steve Jones, who live in Croxteth and took part last year. Potato croquettes recipe is a real crowd pleaser WE love potatoes. In any form. Baked, fried, sautéed, boiled, mashed, whipped, processed into thin, crispy slices with zero (negative, possibly) nutritional value. So here’s a ‘crocchette di patate’ recipe from our chefs in Italy. Perfect as a side to any dish or served as ‘tapas’ like they do in Spain. We know you’ll love these potato croquettes because, obviously, they are delicious because they’re made of potatoes. How else could they taste? Yum. Serves: 10 Ingredients One kilo potatoes 150 grams aged mozzarella cheese, cut into two-centimetre cubes Three eggs 100 grams grated Parmesan cheese Half a cup of fresh parsley, chopped Flour Breadcrumbs Two litres vegetable oil
An organisation which has supported blind and partially sighted people since the 1850s has been awarded the Freedom of Liverpool. Bradbury Fields, formerly known as the Liverpool Voluntary Society for the Blind, is dedicated to working with blind and partially sighted people, helping them to become part of their local communities. At a service at Liverpool Town Hall, it was granted admission to the Freedom Roll of Associations and Institutions, the highest honour the city can bestow.
Method 1. Cook potatoes in skin in boiling water over medium/high heat about 20 minutes or until very tender. Drain; set aside. 2. Meanwhile whisk one whole egg and two egg whites in bowl; set aside. 3. When potatoes are cool enough to handle, remove skin; return to pot; mash. 4. Add one whole egg, two egg yolks, Parmesan cheese, parsley; mix until all ingredients are well blended 5. Add salt and pepper to taste; mix well. 6. With wet hands, form croquettes. 7. Push cube of mozzarella into centre; set aside. 8. Dredge croquettes in flour; dip in beaten egg; roll in breadcrumbs. 9. In deep frying pan, heat oil over high heat until very hot. 10. Fry croquettes for two minutes or until golden brown. 11. Serve immediately. Want to try your hand at even more complex dishes alongside professional chefs at their cooking schools? You can find their cookery holidays on GoLearnTo.com, which offers a range of cookery and other activity holidays including painting, horse riding, photography, yoga, and jewellery making that inspire you to learn as you travel.

If I ruled the world ... By Anton Valdemart
HECTOR was bored with his never-ending routine in the wireless shop and by the drab existence of life with his wife of 30 years, Mildred. Since the children had flown the nest, the couple had frankly got on each other’s nerves. The shop offered some respite but the customers riled Hector, although he always had a pleasant smile. He was a dapper dresser with theatrical tastes in bow ties and smart jackets. There was old Mr Johnson with his tedious requests for radio valves, some difficult to obtain. Then Betty Hawkins insisted that her father’s cat whiskers’ set was just as good as the modern loudspeaker models. Hector tried to rent her something new every time she brought in the old one for repair. Worst of all was Mrs Munroe who was convinced she could have conversations with that nice man who read the news.
“Why don’t you redecorate the shop,” said Mildred as she dished out sausages and mash. “This is a good opportunity now Parker has moved out and upstairs is empty.” Hector obtained the key and took a look at Parker’s former premises, where the chartered accountant had lived and worked. Parker’s father had also once resided there and some old furniture and lumber was left behind.
Treat green spaces with respect this summer PEOPLE are being asked to treat Liverpool’s green spaces with respect this summer and tidy up after themselves when they leave. The good weather means many people are spending time outside in the city’s many parks and open spaces, enjoying picnics and barbeques. However, some are leaving their rubbish behind, rather than putting

it in bins or bagging it and taking it home with them. The council are warning that where evidence is found they will fine people for littering.

Hector planned to store paint and materials while the redecorating was taking place. Then he stumbled across the old trunk. It was in a musty back room lit only by a fan light. The brown leather portmanteau was plastered with tattered labels from distant locations. Venice … Paris … Rome. Hector visualised the romantic destinations as he read the names in the gloom. He opened the trunk. Inside, wrapped in tissue paper, was an old military uniform. Hector gazed at the red and blue tunic with its tarnished brass buttons. Underneath, also carefully wrapped, was a grey greatcoat. Hector was impressed by the clothes’ excellent condition – a student of history, he thought they were at least a century old. He couldn’t resist trying them on and admiring himself in the shop mirror. The bell tinkled and in walked Mrs Munroe, who didn’t notice any difference.
Later Hector drew himself up to his full height and struck a martial pose. “If I ruled the world,” he mused, already making a list of changes he would impose. He was transported to a sunlit square where he stood on a balcony, the colours of his uniform vibrant in the sun. The crowd looked up at him transfixed, glued to every word echoing out of loudspeakers mounted on high masts. “Now I am in power all radios will be of my choice,” he pronounced in a booming voice. “Furthermore I decree than everyone must own a set purchased at my shop …” “Excuse me,” said a voice. Hector looked up and was startled to find himself back in the shop. “I’d like this valve replacing, your highness” chuckled old Mr Johnson. n Read my next Strange Tale – Lottery Winners - in the September Link.

Fire risks in the city OVER the last few weeks we have seen some horrendous fires spread across the Peak District and outside Bolton. However, it must be only a matter of time before a serious fire breaks out in an urban setting. Wwe have had to alert Council Cleansing and our Fire Service of trees being chopped down and left against the back walls and by alleygates in entries between Buckingham and Windsor Roads and Witton Road entry with
Montrose Road. How anyone could be so callous to chop wood and dump furniture in this heatwave, and leave it by the homes of elderly neighbours, is just beyond comprehension. In this heatwave we should all be more diligent in avoiding fire risks and report dumping promptly. Our emergency services should have our support in reducing fire risks.

CELEBRITY ARTICLE
www.liverpoollink.co.uk
Celebrity article – Liza Tarbuck By Tim Saunders
“THE time of the show is crucial” says BBC Radio 2 presenter Liverpudlian Liza Tarbuck, who was born in the city in 1964. “What are people doing while they’re listening and what would I want to listen to in their position? “I like to assemble the tracks so one somehow fits with the next and works as a continuous hour as if there were no talking in between. “It’s the norm to play between eight and 10 tracks in any hour, and I try and get 12 away, but plan for 15.” She has had her own show on BBC Radio 2 since 2012 when she started hosting the Saturday evening slot, but she has been a voice of the station since 2007. Prior to that Liza was a presenter on Channel 4’s Big Breakfast. “I consider it an honour to have my own show on BBC radio,” she says. “If the music is good, the rest of the show takes care of itself. “An opening song should change your palate from the previous show and hint at what’s to come. If I get the opening track right, the rest just flows. “ I’m allowed (my rule) to play some of my favourite tunes a few times a year, listening to them on the BBC equipment can take my
breath away. It’s part of the reason I do the show.” She adds: “I’m mindful of the shows that follow mine and I can lay a foundation for them to wet the listeners’ whistle… similarly I like to end on a high – it’s helpful for the following show.” Her first big break came in 1987 when she landed a starring role in the new Granada
Television comedy series Watching, playing a character called Pamela opposite Emma Wray. Liza stayed with Watching for its entire sevenyear run. She also appeared as Angie in the 1988 Falklands War drama Tumbledown, which starred Colin Firth, Paul Rhys and David Calder. In 2001, she took the title role in Linda Green, which ran for two series, ending in 2002. She has guest starred on the Ricky Gervais comedy Extras, and has appeared in The Inspector Lynley Mysteries as DI Fiona Knight. In 2004, Liza appeared in series six of the long-running BBC One comedy French & Saunders, as a fictionalised version of herself, where she had the role of producer for ‘Saunders & French Productions’. In 2005, Liza appeared as Mrs Jellyby in the BBC One serial Bleak House and in 2006 she appeared in episode six of the sitcom Saxondale. In 2009 Liza starred as Staff Nurse Tina in her first role in a feature film, The Be All and End All, and in 2016 she played the part of Anne Hathaway in the BBC Two comedy series Upstart Crow. Liza is the daughter of legendary comedian Jimmy Tarbuck, and has an older sister, Cheryl, and a younger brother, James. I Am Distracted By Everything, by Liza Tarbuck, is published by Penguin: £16.99.

Young interns graduate NINE young people with learning disabilities, who have been through a programme to help them into work, have graduated. The council teamed up with the Marriott Hotel, Hilton Hotels and grounds maintenance partner Glendale Liverpool to offer the Supported Internship placements. Since last September, pupils from Sandfield Park School, Bank View High School and
Myerscough College worked four days a week and spent the other day in lessons to build employability skills. Just six per cent of young people with learning disabilities are in employment, and the aim of the scheme is to help them transition from education in to the world of work, so they can live more independently and don’t become socially isolated.

HELP! IT’S THE HOLIDAYS
Insect bites and stings medical help: n Wheezing or difficulty breathing. n A swollen face, mouth or throat. n Nausea or vomiting. n A fast heart rate. n Dizziness or feeling faint. n Difficulty swallowing. n Loss of consciousness.
MOST insect bites and stings are not serious and will get better within a few hours or days, but occasionally they can become infected, cause a severe allergic reaction or spread serious illnesses such as Lyme disease and malaria. Bugs that bite or sting include wasps, hornets, bees, horseflies, ticks, mosquitoes, fleas, bedbugs, spiders and midges. Symptoms Usually a red, swollen lump will develop on the skin. This may be painful or very itchy. The symptoms will normally improve within a few hours or days, although sometimes they can last a little longer. Some people have a mild allergic reaction and a larger area of skin around the bite or sting becomes swollen, red and painful. This should pass within a week. Occasionally, a severe allergic reaction can occur, causing symptoms such as breathing difficulties, dizziness and a swollen face or mouth. This requires immediate medical treatment. What to do if you’ve been bitten or stung: n Remove the sting or tick if it’s still in the skin. n Wash the affected area with soap and water. n Apply a cold compress or an
ice pack to any swelling for at least 10 minutes. n Raise or elevate the affected area if possible, as this can help reduce swelling. n Avoid scratching the area, to reduce the risk of infection. n Avoid traditional home remedies, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, as they’re unlikely to help. The pain, swelling and itchiness can sometimes last a few days. Ask your pharmacist about over- the-counter treatments that can help, such as painkillers, creams for itching and antihistamines. Seek medical advice if: n You’re worried about a bite or
sting. n Your symptoms don’t start to improve within a few days or are getting worse. n You’ve been stung or bitten in your mouth or throat, or near your eyes. n A large area (around 10cm or more) around the bite becomes red and swollen. n You have symptoms of a wound infection, such as pus or increasing pain, swelling or redness. n You have symptoms of a more widespread infection, such as a fever, swollen glands and other flu-like symptoms. When to get emergency
Prevention n Remain calm and move away slowly if you encounter wasps, hornets or bees – don’t wave your arms around or swat at them. n Cover exposed skin by wearing long sleeves and trousers. n Wear shoes when outdoors. n Apply insect repellent to exposed skin – repellents that contain 50% DEET (diethyltoluamide) are most effective. n Avoid using products with strong perfumes, such as soaps, shampoos and deodorants – these can attract insects. n Be careful around flowering plants, rubbish, compost, stagnant water, and in outdoor areas where food is served. You may need to take extra precautions if you’re travelling to part of the world where there’s a risk of serious illnesses. For example, you may be advised to take antimalarial tablets to help prevent malaria. CREDIT: NHS

Never too busy for my gladrags and cocktails Hey guys and welcome to my August issue of Life ‘n’ Style. I have been well and truly up the wall these last few weeks due to moving house. I knew it was going to be stressful but I didn’t think it would be quite so bad! The larger items were not really a problem - it was my clothes! I didn’t realise I had so many!! I had a huge clearout beforehand and gave so much stuff to charity but I think I could actually open a dress hire shop just from one wardrobe! All my shopping lately has been household items…researching for hours online for the best reviews on the latest televisions…. learning the difference between the QLED’s and the OLED’s I think I could actually work for LG now!!! Even in-between the stressful move I have still managed to get my gladrags on and get snapped at a few events! I was invited to attend the Liverpool Tennis Tournament at Aigburth Cricket Club with the lovely Hilton gang and what a fab day that was. An afternoon of amazing food, sipping cocktails, catching up with friends and most importantly watching the tennis. I wore this Black ‘Jenesis’ Devore Plunge Neck Jumpsuit for £119.00 from https://www.houseofcb.com and also another pair of Stay Shady glasses from my daughter’s sunglasses range.
An outfit that got a lot of social media attention was the ‘Lainie‘ Peach ZigZag Bandage Trousers for £79.00 with the matching ‘Bertille‘ Peach Zig Zag Bandage Top for £59.00. Also from https://www.houseofcb. com this is one of my fav go-to retailers at the moment for special occasions as they fit really nicely and they have some really nice pieces
we made memories to last a lifetime. I wore this Black Lace Two Piece from Missguided for £80.00 which is part of the Peace + Love range.
My last piece is this Kaftan from my fav Instagram shop @trusellas_boutique. I wore this for a night out in Manchester with my friend Chanelle for the launch of a new #NotGoingHome event in Neighbourhood where you get 3 starters each and unlimited drinks for 1½ hours. The food was lovely and cocktails went down a treat - definitely something I would recommend if you fancy a little midweeker! So last weekend was my gorgeous mum’s birthday and to celebrate she put on the most amazing Bezzybuddy afternoon at The Stables in Allerton. It was a day jam packed with entertainment. With the beautiful Clare Sophia performing, Sheshea showcased their lovely designs on a fashion show and the talented Diane Thompson was our photographer for the day. The most important part to me was when my daughter Jasmine give a heartfelt speech talking about my mum and how special she is to us and also presented her with a Ladyship title. The day really was beautiful and

A car sure to win hearts By Tim Saunders
MANY motorists crave looks and economy but they don’t necessarily have the budgets for both. So the Citroen C3 with its 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine is sure to win many hearts and minds. It’s the most efficient car I have driven for a very long time. With its blue bodywork and white roof, the five-door hatchback looks sporty and stylish. It should also not suffer supermarket trolleys gladly… thanks to Citroen’s patented Bump technology. Ram a trolley into the door and it should rebound and likely do the assailant a bit of damage. It reminds me of when my Dad bought a car and on parking in a supermarket car park a nasty dent appeared in the door from a trolley. It remained there forever more. Although Citroen’s Bump technology will tackle many trolley problems on doors it cannot cover all eventualities and does not deal with oafs in 4x4s who get out and slam their doors
uncaringly into the poor little car next to them. I think Citroen would do well to cover most of the bodywork of their cars in this Bump technology. Dent removal companies would suddenly experience a drop in trade. Inside the C3 there’s daring orange leather on the dashboard and on the edges of the black fabric seats as well as around the steering wheel. It’s also practical. The petrol engine is responsive and I like the five-speed manual gearbox and traditional handbrake. There’s engine stop/ start and on a full 45 litre tank it will easily cover over 500 miles.
Pretty impressive! Head on it looks quite chunky with its large grille and bumper and inside there’s a reasonable amount of space with an adequate boot for a car of this size. Of course with all the Saunders’ luggage it is often necessary to remove the parcel shelf and this occasion is no different. If only our daughters could travel light but even on a sleepover at their grandparents it seems they need to take the kitchen sink. The sat nav is easy to use but try as I might I cannot get it to allow me to search by postcode, which is a pain. That said, it is a
trustworthy system and I am impressed how it introduces me to some of Devon’s scenic country roads that I have not come across before and I am all the better for this experience. The C3 can be driven with urgency and it will not disappoint. Driving in Britain during the day has become an utter waste of time due to endless traffic jams and so it is a joy to drive early in the morning or late at night when the roads are quiet. It actually takes us just two hours to travel from Hampshire to Devon at 6am. The same journey during the day can take up to six hours. On a decent long stretch of road the C3 overtakes six cars in a row, all crawling along at under 50mph. n Facts at a glance: Citroen C3 Flair S&S PureTech 110 Manual in Cobalt Blue with Opal White roof Price: £18,610 Top speed: 117mph 0-60mph: 9.3secs Power: 110bhp Economy: 60mpg approx Watch the video at: www.testdrives.biz

Dog of the month – Holly SHE is very much a people dog and gets so excited when she meets someone new! She is as cheeky as she looks and she really loves to have company. Holly really doesn’t like to be alone, so she’s hoping to find someone who wants a miniature sidekick. She will walk with other dogs and seems to prefer bigger ones, but she would prefer not to live with another dog. She can live with children aged 12 and above. Holly is something of an escape artist and despite being small can clear 6ft, so a secure garden is a must! Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP. It’s open 12pm-4pm every day except Wed, when it is closed. You can also call on 0300 303 0292, 8am-8pm Mon-Fri and 9am-5pm Sat and Sun.

She’s a beautiful, playful, young lady who just wants a home to call her own with some humans to play with. She is micro-chipped and sterilised and has her bags packed waiting to move in. Can you offer her a forever home? Please call our Rescue on 0151 494 0470 or 07745 167170. ■ ‘A hutch is not enough!’ Rabbits require constant access to a run that it at least 8ft long, 6ft wide and 3ft tall, the bigger the better. Rabbits need enough space to run, jump, binky (a bunny skip!!) and stand upright on their back legs whenever they like. A hutch is only a bedroom! ■ A rabbit’s diet should consist of 85% hay/grass, 10% fresh leafy greens and 5% pelleted food. Hay is vital to ensure a healthy digestive system and teeth. Rabbit’s teeth never stop growing and they use the hay they eat to wear down their teeth and stop them getting too long. ■ With the lovely summer weather it is very important to ensure you rabbit has a clean
hutch and run. Rabbits are at risk of a condition called ‘fly-strike’ which is very painful and can be life-threatening, the use of a product called ‘rear-guard’ is essential in the summer months to reduce the risk of this. Checking your rabbit daily and ensuring they have a clean bottom is very important. ■ Rabbits love company! Rabbits should be kept in pairs, they love companionship and can become depressed if they live alone. If you would like to keep a pair of rabbits, a neutered male and female or two males tend to get along better than two females. If you have a single rabbit and want to get them a friend, please contact The Vet for advice on bonding as rabbits should be introduced carefully to reduce the risk of any fighting. The Vet Liverpool

Croft celebrate success at awards evening By Mick Titherington
STONEYCROFT FC players, officials, supporters, family and friends gathered together to celebrate a hugely successful season which saw them finish as champions and Challenge Cup winners, achieving the double for the first time in their 107-year history. Both trophies were presented at the evening and a number of special awards were made to
players and supporters. James Kennedy, JK to his friends and team mates, not surprisingly scooped a number of awards. The top marksman with a phenomenal 54 goals was the obvious choice for the Golden Boot award. He also picked up the award for most assists, the Players Player and Manager’s Player of the Year awards to crown an absolutely spectacular season long performance.
Other awards went to Tom Stewart for goal of the season, Kieran Ledson for performance of the season and Joe Daley for most improved player. The youth side were also in attendance and manager Lee Scott paid tribute to his side for the way they had performed throughout the season, only to be pipped at the post in the last game to finish runners up. Awards were made to youth players and high hopes expressed
for next year with the hope that they can go one better. The indefatigable Big Dunc received the Supporter of the Year award. The first team will being playing their football in the Liverpool County Premier League next season as they step up a gear. If they continue with the performances shown last season surely further success lies on the horizon.

Blood, sweat and hockey By Mark Williams
WEST Derby Hockey Club have been making the most of the good weather with a busy summer schedule that is keeping all of their members sharp and in good shape for the upcoming season. Those members involved with the Golborne Summer League have put in a fantastic run of form, registering three consecutive wins, a draw and then a fantastic win against topof-the-table Prescot to ensure they remain in the mix for the top spot come the end of July. Closer to home the coaching staff have been putting everyone else through their paces with some gruelling sessions in the summer heat which have
well and truly blown away all cobwebs since the end of play back in late March – if the hard work continues they’re sure to be in great condition for the new season. West Derby have also been busy on the recruitment front, recruiting three new members so far this summer – with the club’s vision to again return to three Men’s teams and two Ladies they are hopeful that the recruitment continues in the same trend over the summer. The club’s attention now turns to the annual grass tournament hosted at Leek Hockey Club in mid-July and looking further afield – the pre-season friendly schedule to ensure they hit the ground running for the 2018-19 season.

Things are hotting up for Liverpool Sefton By Jen Ratcliffe
OUR elite players got down to business again recently as they began pre-season fitness for the 2018-19 season. The W1s have been braving the heat to make use of the gym partnership Liverpool Sefton have with Nuffield Health at the Body & Mind Gym at Liverpool College. The squad has been working with Ragul Selvamoorthy, a Sports Science student from Liverpool Hope University, in a partnership that benefits both sides. He has designed the programme specifically for hockey so is confident that the team will be able to hit the ground running from the first whistle of the new season. The W1s are looking to dominate the North Hockey Premier League and regain their National League status by the end of the season. Whilst promotion will be a very achievable goal due to changes in league structure, the girls won’t settle for anything
less than an outright win and the league title. Elsewhere in the club, an enthusiastic squad of 24 players finished their Bowdon Mixed Summer League campaign with a 2-1 victory over the hosts in sweltering conditions. Since late May, the squad has competed on a weekly basis with some of the best mixed teams in the North West, finishing mid-table with a respectable record of three wins and four defeats. Standout performances from the club’s younger players – in particular Joe Lewis, Charlie Parry, Isabel Coleman and Orla Cronin – shows that the next generation of talent at Liverpool Sefton is already starting to flex its muscle at the higher levels of the sport. Closer to home the club is still very much in summer fun mode and continues to run the mixed sessions on a Tuesday night. Anyone is welcome to come down and play: Liverpool College Astro, 7-9pm, £3.
