When knights were bold By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society

MOST people are familiar with knighthood ceremonies when the recipient is dubbed on the shoulders by the Queen or another member of the royal family. It is a simple ceremony with origins going back to the sovereign honouring knights on the battlefield. Like many aspects of the British monarchy, it has evolved and been adapted to meet changing needs. Originally knights were at the very least tough warriors who could handle themselves in battle. Knighthoods were rewarded not only for brave deeds but also special service during the conflict. Sir Richard Molyneux, whose descendants built Croxteth Hall, was among those knighted by Henry V in 1415 after the crucial Battle of Agincourt. One reason Sir Richard received the honour was because his bowmen from the West Derby

Hundred contributed to the defeat of the French. Soldiers became bannerets, a higher form of knighthood conferred by the monarch for some heroic act performed on the battlefield. Unlike today’s simple version, the ceremony was carried out with full military pomp. The army was assembled in a landscape strewn with debris from the recent fight. The banneret elect, escorted by two notable knights or famous warriors, was proceeded by heralds proclaiming his valiant achievements. The knight’s pennon, a long flag used to identify him in the midst of battle, was transformed into a banner by tearing the end off. In those days the name banner was applied to the standard or flag of monarchs and knights, hence the name of pubs such as the Royal Standard. The first banneret was said to have been created by Edward I.

The last time the honour was conferred was by Charles I after the Battle of Edgehill in the Civil War. An artist’s impression (pictured) shows a 13th century Molyneux knight carrying a shield displaying the family coat of arms – a cross moline. This was another way knights could be identified during battles. Seen without a helmet, he wears a suit of chain mail. This provided protection from arrows, swords and other weapons while allowing freedom of movement. The first civil (non-military) knight in England was Sir William Walworth, lord mayor of London, who mortally wounded rebel leader Wat Tyler in the presence of the boy king Richard II in 1381. n Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30pm on Wednesday 20 March at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

The Mersey Monster HIS name was Simon but he was known as Jonah because he claimed to have been swallowed by the Mersey Monster. This was a remarkable survival, if he was to be believed. A very small number were sympathetic but most dismissed Simon as either a daydreamer or fantasist. He was a keen fisherman who knew the upper reaches of the Mersey estuary well. This was his story: It was a hot, still day when Simon rowed out on the river. The small boat moved steadily over the water’s mirror-like surface. Soon he reached The Deep, the wide part of the estuary between Hale and Eastham. Simon dropped a line and waited patiently for a fish to bite. He remembered watching a paddle steamer edging its way out from the Eastham jetty towards Liverpool. Suddenly, there was great swell of surging water and the shiny grey back of a huge fish rose to the surface. It tossed Simon and the rowing boat to one side as he was surrounded by churning water. “I was thrown about but everything seemed to be in slow motion,” he said later. Simon shot to the surface and had a clear view of an enormous creature which he estimated was 80ft long:

“I had never in my wildest dreams thought such a thing could be roving our seas. “It was a monster shark. The next thing its huge jaws were coming towards me – I distinctly recall its fearsome teeth. “The next thing I was in its cavernous mouth but only for a few seconds.” Words from the Bible’s Book of Jonah thundered in his head: “Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah…” “How I survived is a mystery but as the thing turned I was ejected to safety.

Strange Tale – by Anton Valdemart

“I recollect seeing one of its baleful eyes staring at me as I rose to the surface. In an instant the beast was gone. “The river was flat calm once more. The whole thing must have been over in just a couple of minutes because the paddle steamer had travelled only a short distance from where I last saw it.” Simon, a strong swimmer, grabbed a plank from his wrecked boat and swam to the shore. People were incredulous and wanted proof. There were no other reports of anything strange being seen in the river. Simon set out to convince the doubters. He constructed a life-sized papier-mâché model of the monster’s terrible jaws as he remembered them. They were constructed in a barn where a local boy took a picture of Simon with the realistic model. The next day the barn burnt down and the controversial mock-up was destroyed, leaving Simon bereft. It is the only tangible evidence of the incredible story. Simon spent many a long day during the rest of his life searching with binoculars for the Mersey Monster. He never set foot in a boat again. n Read my next Strange Tale – Can I help you? – in the April Link.

Baltic Triangle walking tour By Peter Hesketh

MOIRA and I had a great couple of hours exploring the Baltic Triangle one recent Saturday afternoon, a fascinating walking tour of the old and new aspects of Liverpool’s ‘new bohemia’. Appropriately enough setting off from the Baltic Fleet pub, we immediately realise that our tour guide Seb is exactly what a tour guide should be – knowledgeable and passionate – and our first port of call is the Liverpool Tea Warehouse in Shaws Alley. We were expecting a warehouse a century or so old but it is in fact a delightful new shop which sells hundreds of varieties of tea (we bought some Exotic Mango and China Rose – both delicious!). Next port of call is the Nordic Church in Park Lane – how many times have we driven past Cause damp and mould this and wondered what it’s a problem for your like inside? Well, we were able home and health

to find out. It’s quite a hive of activity, in addition to holding church services on alternate Sundays, and has a fascinating history which Seb runs through enthusiastically. Time for a coffee……so it’s off to the Red Berry Club in Jamaica Street. The striking mural, covering an entire large wall, is worth the visit alone and the coffee is absolutely wonderful! We make our way through the streets of the Baltic Triangle and take in numerous works of street art. Paul Curtis’ ‘Wings’ in Jamaica Street has become famous and much-photographed but we are equally captivated by the Muhammad Ali mural in Brick Street and (OK, I’m an LFC season ticket holder!) the Jurgen Klopp mural in Jordan Street. There are numerous others and we are suitably awe inspired. We gravitate towards Cains/

www.liverpoollink.co.uk Higsons Brewery – a famous Liverpool landmark of course – and Seb takes us into the Alhambra, a delightfully cosy Spanish-themed bar, and then on to the Cains Brewery Market. This is where Seb’s tour ends so we have a good mooch around the market before heading back to…..the Alhambra! Now where was that bar we passed a while back? Oh yes, the Hobo Kiosk in Bridgewater Street……..quirky in a wonderful way! We pop in for a quick half out of curiosity……but stay for a couple of pints! Think I’ll book Seb’s Baltic Bars Tour some time soon (ssssh, don’t tell Moira!). Oh, and I forgot to mention the two Arthur Dooley sculptures we saw on the tour.

Practical 308 SW has a sporty feel By Tim Saunders

AFTER driving a Mistubishi Eclipse Cross stepping into the Peugeot 308 SW comes as a bit of a shock. There was a pretty high driving position in the Mitsubishi. The Peugeot is a complete contrast, surprisingly low to the ground with a really sporty feel. I love it. Assessing the car on the driveway from my desk its front side profile could easily belong to a sports coupe. A quick glance and you could be forgiven for thinking it was a Mercedes especially with the wing mirrors folded as they do when it is locked shut. This is a really practical family car. It has a cavernous boot that allows for all the family luggage we need to take on a trek to Devon. The only way to beat the traffic, especially on a bank holiday, is to leave as early as possible so feeling like a family of moles, we venture out at 6am and arrive at Paignton for 9am. To my surprise we beat the

estimated time by 10 minutes. For a change I really enjoy the journey. There are no traffic jams, few red traffic lights and the lack of traffic means that I can put the Peugeot through its paces. This is a diesel and so the engine does rattle a bit but I love its gutsiness. Slam it into second gear, floor it and it delivers a smile for me and a tut from my wife… I like the way the dial on the rev counter shows the engine’s progress from right to left; the opposite way to usual. It corners and holds the road well and is pretty economical. There’s auto stop start and a six

speed gearbox. My criticisms of the 308 SW are that the gearbox is indecisive and that while I am waiting for the car in front to move on a steep hill on the edge of Brixham, it stalls. I panic and I can’t get it to start again. It’s probably driver error, perhaps my foot slipped off the clutch too quickly, I don’t know but auto start stop usually sees the engine start again once it has stopped but it doesn’t happen on this occasion. I throw my hands up in the air and the van driver behind is thankfully patient. I turn the

ignition a couple of times and thankfully the Pug surges back to life. At least the automatic roll prevention that comes with the electric handbrake, works. There is no rolling down the hill here. While this model is fitted with front and rear parking sensors there is no reversing camera. It is quite a sizeable vehicle and I was worried that my over reliance on reversing cameras in cars of this size might make manoeuvring the Peugeot all the more difficult. But using the easy to operate electrically operated wing mirrors, as long as the driver keeps their cool, it is pretty easy to reverse and indeed parallel park. n Facts at a glance Peugeot 308 SW Allure BlueHDi 130 Price: Around £23,000 Engine: 1.5-litre Power: 129bhp 0 to 60mph: 10.3secs Top speed: 126mph Economy: 74mpg Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz

‘Staying compassionate with physical disability you can’t see’ 10 per cent of people live with long term chronic conditions that you can’t see, in fact the majority of disabilities are invisible – CFS/ ME, lupus, fibromyalgia, crohn’s, epilepsy, MS, endometriosis…. Lack of understanding from others can be a big issue affecting mental health, relationships, and overall quality of life. Do you want to be more supportive of a loved one with a chronic invisible physical health problem or know someone you wish would be? Are you, or is someone you know, living with a long-term but invisible serious health condition? What’s it like living with debilitating fatigue and pain? We will consider what can make it difficult for you to be there for them and explore some strategies to develop compassion, understanding and be a better

CELEBRITY ARTICLE

Celebrity article – Sooty Tim Saunders talks to Sooty, who is older than he looks SOOTY, the mischief making, magical bear, is 70 years old this year. He has Harry Corbett, nephew of Harry Ramsden the famous fish and chip shop magnate, to thank for his success. In 1948, while on holiday in Blackpool, Harry Corbett, then a Bradford businessman with an engineering degree, bought a teddy bear glove puppet at the end of Blackpool Pier for 7s 6d – to entertain his children. He initially named it Teddy. But Harry felt that Teddy should have his own identity and so his wife, Marjorie, took some soot from the chimney and blackened Teddy’s ears and nose. The rest is history. Harry and Sooty made their first stage appearance on the BBC’s Talent Night and then became regulars on Saturday Special until 1955. “I was then given my own television show and in 1957, Harry introduced my friend Sweep, the long eared dog who speaks Sweepsqueak.” Sooty may still only whisper but he is never short of words. The BBC was not keen about Harry’s wishes to introduce a girlfriend for Sooty. Newspaper headlines at the time read, “No Sex for Sooty” and “BBC won’t allow girlfriend

for Sooty.” After the Daily Mail backed Harry’s attempts to introduce a female to the line up, Soo – the well-dressed English-speaking Panda, was finally introduced in 1965. Harry’s wife provided Soo’s voice until 1980. “I remember the BBC wanted to replace Harry with a young blonde female presenter and so in 1969 we moved to Thames Television. This became a long running half-an-hour series with ITV who made the programme in colour.” The children’s television show that bears his name has continued in various forms since the 1950s and, according to Guinness World

Records, is the longest-running children’s programme. In 1975, Matthew, Harry’s youngest son (born in 1948 and the same age as Sooty) bought the Sooty company for £20,000. Leaving behind Bungle and Zippy at Rainbow, he took over from his father as Sooty’s new presenter. Harry died in 1989. Over time Sooty’s gang has grown. “In 1990, Matthew introduced a younger, naughtier version of me, called little cousin Scampi, the naughty schoolboy.” Further additions included Butch the bulldog and Miki the Brazilian cat. Sooty’s biggest achievement came in 1998. “I won the British Comedy Award for best children’s programme and it was in this year that Matthew retired and Richard Cadell became my new presenter for my ITV shows.” Further testament to Sooty’s success has been an animated cartoon and the Sooty museum in Shipley, Yorkshire. In June 2008 it was announced that Richard Cadell had bought the rights to Sooty, which had been put up for sale by HIT Entertainment. Time does not stand still for Sooty because he is popular on social media with over 170,000 followers on Facebook as well as having a twitter account. With Richard Cadell, he is busy making Sooty: The Movie and is on tour in 2019.

Go through all your fav pics in your phone and create a little album (to make the uploading process a bit easier). You can decide if you want just one pic or create a little collage. You can get next day delivery on these so if you’re a last minute shopper you’ll be ok, you might just pay a little extra for postage.

Has your mum got some empty walls? Then why not try brighten up the home with some smiles and happy memory? You could get a canvas, print or a montage. Check out www.photobox.co.uk

If I’m ever in doubt for my mum for any special occasion, or just simply to say thank you, I can never go wrong with a bottle of champagne. So, what better way than with a personalised bottle either with her name or a photograph on. If you want to spend a little bit more you can always go for a brandy, wine or gin. If you have a look on www.gettingpersonal.co.uk you can take your pick as they have all kinds on offer. Looking for somewhere to take your mum on Mother’s Day? Enjoy an afternoon at Hilton in Liverpool for £30 per person. You get a glass of Prosecco on arrival, live singer and afternoon tea which includes a selection of sandwiches, pastries and scones with clotted cream and jam. For enquiries call 0151 708 4200. I don’t think you can go wrong with a pair of pyjamas and I think you’d struggle to find somewhere better than Matalan. When you weigh up the quality, price and design there’s nowhere that quite compares in my opinion. I love these Ribbed Velvet Short Set for £14.

LIFE ‘n’STYLE – with JADE AINSWORTH www.jadeainsworth gossip.co.uk

You can match them up with Fleece Gown for £14 and a pair of slippers for £6.

Lastly if your mum or nan is a lover of chocolate then you can add a personal touch with a chocolate cookie or a message written on selection of your choice. Check out www.prezzybox.com I would like to wish my mum a very Happy Mother’s Day and thank you for being everything to me and my Jaz. She’s our rock, best friend and we love her for all the world and would be totally lost without her. Hope all the other mums out there have a fantastic day too. That’s it from me till next month. Love Jade x

Ovarian cancer awareness month CANCER of the ovaries, is one of the most common types of cancer in women. Ovarian cancer mainly affects women who have been through the menopause (usually over the age of 50), but it can sometimes affect younger women. Common symptoms of ovarian cancer include: n Feeling constantly bloated. n A swollen tummy. n Discomfort in your tummy or pelvic area. n Feeling full quickly when eating. n Needing to pee more often than normal. The symptoms aren’t always easy to recognise because they’re similar to those of some more common conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). See your GP if: n You’ve been feeling bloated most days for the last three weeks n You have other symptoms of ovarian cancer that won’t go away n You have a family history of ovarian cancer and are worried you may be at a higher risk of getting it.

It’s unlikely you have cancer, but it’s best to check. Your GP can do some simple tests to see if you might have it. Read more about how ovarian cancer is diagnosed. If you’ve already seen your GP and your symptoms continue or get worse, go back to them and explain this. If you have a family history of ovarian cancer, your GP may refer you to a genetics specialist to discuss the option of genetic

testing to check your ovarian cancer risk. The exact cause of ovarian cancer is unknown. But some things may increase a woman’s risk of getting it, such as: n Being over 50 years of age. n A family history of ovarian or breast cancer – this could mean you’ve inherited genes that increase your cancer risk. n Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – although any increase in cancer risk is likely to be very

small . n Endometriosis – a condition where tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb is found outside the womb. n Being overweight. The treatment for ovarian cancer depends on things such as how far the cancer has spread and your general health. The main treatments are: n Surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible – this will often involve removing both ovaries, the womb and the tubes connecting them to each other (fallopian tubes). n Chemotherapy (where medicine is used to kill cancer cells) – this is usually used after surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells, but is occasionally used before surgery to shrink the cancer. Treatment will aim to cure the cancer whenever possible. If the cancer has spread too far to be cured, the aim is to relieve symptoms and control the cancer for as long as possible. Credit: NHS

Cat of the month – Oatie OATIE is about two years old. His owners were moving away so they threw him out on the street. As he wasn’t neutered or used to the streets he got picked on by some of the other cats. He’s safe in rescue now and has been neutered, micro chipped, flea and worm treated and is ready for his new home. He’s timid to start with but will be a friendly boy once he gets the chance to know you. Can you offer Oatie the life he deserves? For adoption enquiries please also contact us on 0151 494 0470 or 07745 167170. RONNY is two years old and is a big and beautiful ex-racing greyhound who ADORES meeting people. From the moment he arrived at Dogs Trust, he made sure everyone knew who he was, greeting everybody with the waggiest tail and great big hello! He loves to be made a fuss of, even though he pretends to be an independent boy, almost as much as he likes to get stuck into his dinner.

Ronny gets along well with other dogs, especially other greys. He’ll happily live with another dog, but he does like his own space, and his home comforts now that his racing days are behind him. He can live with children aged about 10, but possibly not small pets, due to his sporting history. A1 TAXIS Brilliant Stoney 7777 move to the top 480 DOWNLOAD OUR APP By Mick Titherington

MANAGER Paddy McBride believes his side are now showing their true credentials with performances that reflect their ability. The New Year has seen a Stoneycroft goal explosion, defeating Finn Harps 6-2, with goals from Jay Kennedy (4) and one apiece from Luke Daley and Alex Kelly. The destruction of Botanic followed with a 10-1 rout, Jay Kennedy with a hat-trick, Joe Daley with a brace, Tom Stewart, Connor O’Dea and Jack Daley all appearing on the score sheet. This set them up nicely for their game against league leaders Marshals Roby. With Stoney lying second, three points behind, the match was set up to be a real tussle for top spot. And so it turned out. Both sides went for it in style. Fast flowing competitive football was the order

of the day with no quarter given or asked. Played in a downpour, the spectacle on display brightened the spectators’ day. In an evenly matched first half hour with half chances created, but not taken, the pace never slackened so it was left to the excellent Luke Daley to break the deadlock with an excellent finish. That’s how it stayed until halftime. Immediately after the break Ben Williams added to his tally to double the Stoney lead. The tackles were flying in and on the 60th minute Ben Williams was brought down in the box and man of the match Luke Daley converted the spot kick to complete the scoring and leapfrog his side into pole position. Meanwhile Stoney Vets continue with their 100 per cent league record, producing fine performances hitting seven and five against MCL and Café D’Arts respectively.

Alder FC continue good 3G can’t beat the snow form with four wins

By Jim Stanway

THE start of February saw the onset of winter for real and the blanket of snow that carpeted the south of the city unfortunately caused the postponement of South Liverpool’s important Liverpool FA Challenge Cup quarter final against Richmond Raith Rovers. The two inches of snow could not be moved off the surface as it could damage the playing area. Since the opening of the new Jericho Lane complex weekend football has already seen high winds, pouring rain and heavy snow in five weeks – there’s

only thick fog that we’ve not experienced yet! South have had a good January with a flurry of goals – 18 goals in only four matches which have moved the first team away from the relegation zone. Centre forward Cameron Dalton has scored seven goals in those four games – a streak that has resulted in 10 goals in the last seven matches. The most impressive result was the 6-3 win at Ashville with goals from Dalton, Sharif Yusuf, Danny Bulayima and two for the returning Mason Nevitt and one for James Thomas.

By Peter Harrison

AFTER the Christmas break and a free week, the season resumed with a hard fought 2-1 victory against Bankfield. Alex Gofton opened the scoring but soon left the pitch with a head injury. After a Bankfield equaliser the match was evenly balanced until Mick Andrews popped up with the winner 10 minutes from time. An impressive 5-2 victory against Waterloo GSOB saw a rare goal from left back Lee Treble and Antony Riddell among the

goals. A home 3-0 victory against lowly Old Xavs saw the pick of the goals – a screamer from Antony Barnes. This was followed quickly with a 3-0 midweek victory against Custys with Tony Roberts coming off the bench to net. The month of February now sees some tough games subject to the weather, with a return derby against Liverpool Nalgo amongst them. n Pictured is Antony Riddell, in ponytail, in action under the floodlights against Custys.
