Vanished gateways By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society
STANDING guard at entrances, imposing gateways were designed to impress all those passing under their arches. The structures flourished in medieval times when many towns and cities were surrounded by walls for defence from marauding armies and rebels. Gatehouses were also symbols of status, wealth and power. They were built at the approaches to castles, stately homes and religious buildings such as monasteries. Historic gateways can be seen in many parts of the country. Chester has several incorporated in the ancient walls where walkers pass over them.
Northgate, built in 1810, stands on the site of the original Roman access to the city. Three-arched Eastgate, constructed 1768, features a spectacular Victorian clock – said to be the most photographed timepiece after Big Ben. Many gateways have been demolished over the centuries, often to make way for increased traffic. London’s most famous survivor is probably Traitors’ Gate at the Tower of London but the city once had many. Some – such as Ludgate, Newgate and Cripplegate – are still remembered while others have vanished from the collective memory. Ludgate’s origins went back 1,800 years when it was pulled
down in 1760 to ease traffic congestion. Legend says it was first built in 66 BC by Ancient Briton King Lud. It was rebuilt in 1215 and again in 1586 when a statue of Queen Elizabeth was placed on the west front. Newgate, commanding western approach to the city in medieval times, was Roman in origin. It was badly damaged in Wat Tyler’s 1381 rebellion and rebuilt – only to be destroyed in the Great Fire of London (1666). Newgate was again reconstructed but finally demolished in 1770. Cripplegate derived its name from the Anglo-Saxon words Crepel-geat meaning a covered way. It originally led to a watchtower
outside the city walls. After being rebuilt several times, it was cleared in 1760. Holbein Gateway in Whitehall was designed by the great artist in 1546. It survived little more than 200 years, being removed in 1759. Another fine vanished gateway that fell victim to traffic was Liverpool Lodge (pictured), the grand stone entrance to Knowsley Hall. I remember this superb castellated gatehouse, with imposing coat of arms over the doorway, pulled down in the early 1970s when the M57 motorway was built. n Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday 16 May at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

I am always on the lookout for ‘nice’ or informative local articles and please try and keep them brief so that I can fit as much as possible in for you all. By the way, just a reminder that publicising the opening of a shop, for example, is not news, it is advertising, so if you would like to advertise your business then please call us for information. Now is probably a good time to say THANK YOU! Thank you to all the people who work hard to make The LINK possible. Special thanks to Dawn, Carol and Colette for all your assistance. Thank you to all our advertisers who are vital to the production of The LINK magazines and without whom we wouldn’t be able to deliver to so many homes, supermarkets, businesses, etc. Huge thanks to everyone at studio for putting this all together – and being so tolerant! A massive thanks too to our distribution team – the ones who deliver The LINK to you come hail, rain and snow. Thank you very much also to all our contributors who are now too numerous to mention but especially to Stephen Guy (The West Derby Society) who has been writing his wonderful, ever popular, history articles for The LINK since we produced our very first ever A4 LINK back in 2006. Finally, of course, to all our readers for your positive feedback and for supporting our advertisers. Well I hope you all enjoy this West Derby and Croxteth Park LINK, have a great May and I will see you all next month. Moira

West Derby Courthouse By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society
IN 1585 Queen Elizabeth sent letters to three members of the gentry – Bold, Norris and Molyneux – instructing them to report on the state of her Courthouse in West Derby. They reported back that the court was in such bad condition that hearings had to be held in the adjacent chapel “which disturbeth divine service”. The present courthouse was built in 1586 on the orders of the queen, who slashed the proposed budget from £60 to £40! Standing in the centre of West Derby Village and hardly bigger than a double garage, the sandstone structure is of local and national importance. This is the former manor court where members of the powerful Molyneux family once sat in judgment. When it was built there were just seven streets in Liverpool, clustered around the castle. As well as being the only freestanding postmedieval courthouse in Britain, it is Liverpool’s oldest non-ecclesiastical public building. West Derby Courthouse was not a court in the modern sense – there were originally no lawyers and the squire acted as steward. The Courthouse (pictured in 1915) represents a vanished way of life before Britain
became a property-owning democracy. When it was built about 50 wealthy families – most of them royalty or aristocracy – owned England. There was probably a courthouse in Saxon times. If this was the one described in 1585, it had the same dimensions as the Tudor rebuild. The Molyneuxes – along with the Stanleys – owned Liverpool and much of Lancashire. Later created Earls of Sefton, the Molyneux family were also responsible for law and order and were successively constables of both West Derby and Liverpool Castles.

At this court they dealt with land and financial issues relating to their vast properties. They also dealt with people accused of petty offences. The only punishments meted out were fines or up to six hours in the stocks. The court last sat in 1910 and is now Grade II*-listed. It was refurbished in 2005 following a campaign by the West Derby Society, which supervises visits. n See inside the Courthouse between 2pm and 4pm most Sundays between April and October (not Easter Sunday), admission free. Work on The International Centre for Shared Reading gets underway at Calderstones Mansion THE Reader is delighted to announce that work to redevelop the Grade II-listed Calderstones Mansion House has begun. Hoardings and scaffolding have been erected around the building at the heart of the park as builders from John Turner Construction Group arrive on site to complete the multimillion-pound project which will transform the Mansion House into The Reader’s International Centre for Shared Reading. The charity, which aims to get great literature into the hands of people who need it most, has been based in Calderstones Park since September 2014 and
has secured major funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, Liverpool City Council and private funders to bring the Mansion House back to life as a community hub built on reading and well-being activity. Phase One of this ambitious project was completed in 2015 with the opening of the much– loved children’s literature centre, The Storybarn, and The Reader Ice Cream Parlour, a new social enterprise, in the courtyard at Calderstones Park. The Mansion House closed its doors to the public in early 2017 to allow Phase Two to get underway. Park users will have noticed an increase in activity on site in recent months
More hope for rough sleepers
LIVERPOOL City Council has unveiled plans to transform a temporary night shelter into a full-time facility, which would help rough sleepers all year round. The £3.5million project would mean the land opposite Labre House, a temporary winter shelter on Camden Street, would be transformed into a fourstorey lifestyle hub including accommodation, support services, training and even employment opportunities. If all goes to plan the application for the new centre will be submitted in the summer.
as the popular Reader Café moved into a temporary building in the courtyard and the arrival of a temporary toilet block which will allow much-needed repairs to get underway at the Mansion House. Dr Jane Davis, founder and director of The Reader said: “It’s fantastic to see fences up and builders on site. So much of the planning and the work so far has happened behind the scenes, now
WEST DERBY LOCKSMITHS
that park users can see the signs of progress, the excitement has gone up a notch. “Now we can really focus on what Calderstones is going to be when the doors open again next year – a community based around readers, the rich heritage of the site and the experience of nature offered by the park. It will be a place where you can learn, get involved, meet other people, and build relationships. “

Mirror, mirror on the wall Strange Tale – By Anton Valdemart
WAR loomed and so did Algernon’s retirement – he had spent more than 40 years with the same shipping company, rising to be senior clerk. He was not an ambitious man and took each day as it came. He was popular and now it was time to go. Algernon decided to mark the first day of retirement sorting through accumulated junk that filled the old family home. The attic was crammed with old manner of things, some discarded back in his grandparents’ time. He had never liked the mirror which originally hung in his father’s study. Algernon was so upset as a child that it had been hidden away. It was the story of the queen who stared into the looking glass and asked the mystifying question: “Mirror, mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all?” Young Algernon had nightmares after hearing the story. He was too distressed to even go into the same room as the mirror. The boy calmed down once it was removed – strangely, it was only this mirror which affected him. Now, more than half a century later, he was looking at it once more. He found the relic propped up in a dark corner, facing the wall.
Algernon turned it round and laughed to himself: fancy being scared of an old mirror. To prove how things had changed, he returned the long-banished item to its original place on the study wall. Late one night, Algernon was catching up with the evening paper news. The clock struck midnight. He put the newspaper down, got up from his comfortable chair and was startled to see an eerie glow coming from the mirror. Algernon looked into the battered glass, at first noticing nothing strange. Then he suddenly realised – HE COULD NOT SEE HIS
REFLECTION. Instead there was a ghostly mist filling the mirror before, slowly, a face emerged. Algernon was astonished to see it was himself as a young man. He was dressed in the fashion of the 1870s – even wearing the silk tie given to him as a birthday present by Estelle, his lost love. Tears welled up in Algernon’s eyes as his young self looked at him intently. Deeper into the mirror there were shady forms – he recognised several. One was his school friend Lionel who had been killed in a boating accident. Another was school teacher Mr Lindsay who keeled over and died while playing bowls. “We want you to join us,” said young Algernon, indicating the others and extending his hand. “It is peaceful here and nothing ever changes – it is a world where everything stays the same. For eternity.” Later two men were standing in the study. “Such a tragedy,” said the policeman to his colleague. “So soon after his retirement.” Looking at the figure sprawled on the carpet under splinters of glass, he added: “This heavy mirror should not have been hung on such a small hook.” ■ Read my next Strange Tale – Judgement Day – in the June Link.

Local teacher tells budding authors to ‘bee-lieve’ in themselves after seeing his first insect-inspired book in print THERE is a buzz of excitement at Banks Road Primary School in Garston. For one of the school’s teachers has just published his first insect-inspired book! Entitled Arthur Bee Has A Secret, the book tells the tale of a little bee with a secret that he’s too embarrassed to talk about. It’s a secret that bees aren’t expected to have, and the whole beehive is affected. How will Queen Bee react when she finds out Arthur’s secret? Arthur Bee was created by Shaun Millea, who was inspired to put pen to paper after his son’s experience with hay fever. The father of two, from Halewood, explained: “My son is now 23 but when he was seven he couldn’t go anywhere near a field or flower without having an awful reaction. It got so bad that he even ended up at A&E – unable to breath with severe eye pain. “He would get very upset as
he couldn’t play ‘on the field’ with his friends in the summer. However, he was very good at the time at karate. “So, I made up the story of a bee that had hay fever and so unable to do all the normal bee things but he was good at making honey in the laboratory. I was just trying to find a scenario that my son could relate to.” After writing the story many
years ago, Shaun put it away in the attic until he re-discovered it recently. He dusted it off and gave it a new lease of life. The 52-year-old recalled: “One day I found it, re-read it and typed it out. “I drew my own rough illustrations and read it to the children in school. They all seemed to enjoy it.” A chance meeting with

renowned Liverpool author, Jude Lennon, who was visiting Banks Road School, led to Shaun getting his work published. He explained: “She was very supportive and put me in touch with Sue Miller of Team Author UK. “Then in February 2018 it was published. Seeing it in print is one of the most special moments I’ve had – I couldn’t stop smiling!” And the children at Banks Road are thrilled to see their teacher’s work in print with many of them dressing up as Arthur Bee for World Book Day. Now Shaun is busy penning his next book and has encourages other budding authors: “Don’t let anybody put you off or put your work down. BEE-LIEVE in yourself!” ■ Arthur Bee Has a Secret is available on Amazon and from Nowhere Books Shop, Bold Street and Write Blend Book Shop in Waterloo, priced £7.99.

I was invited along to the opening of a new coffee bar and members lounge, The Royal Institution, recently and wore this Black Crepe Sleeveless Keyhole Wide Leg Jumpsuit for £25.00 from www.prettylittlething.com. I love jumpsuits, I just think they are so easy to wear and are figure flattering at the same time.
Another little Spring number I wore recently is this Dusky Pink Gold Button Blazer Dress, also for £25.00 from www.prettylittlething. com. I teamed mine with a pair of denim over the knee boots from www.ego.co.uk and a bit of jewellery. The thing about these blazer dresses is that you can wear them as a dress then once you are fed up with them you can wear them again as a blazer with jeans. If pink isn’t your colour then maybe go for a darker colour. I wore this Black Gold Button Detail Blazer Dress for LMI Liverpool on Saturday. This one has got a slightly more fitted style than the pink and has got lovely gold button detailing. It’s one of those outfits that are quite easy and comfortable to wear but dressy at the same time. I paired mine with a pair of over the knee boots from Kurt Geiger, a Just Cavalli bag from
www.veryexclusive.co.uk and a black choker. If you are looking to try out some new strip eyelashes then there is a really good brand on Instagram called @blinkyboolashes or the website is www.blinkyboolashes.com they stock a good range of luxury 3D silk and mink eyelashes priced around £7/£9 each. I have a 15 per cent discount code available for all my lovely readers. Simply enter Jade15 at the checkout and the discount will be added to your order. That’s it from me but I will be back next month with a Holiday Shop feature. Love Jade x

SKIN Cancer is the most common cancer in the UK with more people dying from it here ever year than in Australia. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and we have these tips to help you know what to look out for. Check moles frequently for changes to: ■ Symmetry – The two sides don’t look the same. ■ Border – Irregular border, edges may be blurred or jagged. ■ Colour – Uneven colour with more than one shade.
■ Size – Large, usually at least the size of the end of a pencil. Also check for: ■ A new growth or sore that doesn’t heal. ■ A spot, mole or sore that itches or hurts. ■ A mole or growth that bleeds, crusts or scabs. If you notice any of these signs, see your GP. If you know anyone who has any of these symptoms, insist they see their doctor.

BAILEY is an affectionate lad who loves nothing more than to give out bear hugs! He has such a sweet personality and he loves to be out and about exploring. In fact, as he’s so active, he would make a great companion for anyone who enjoys long walks. Bailey can be a little nervous when he first meets people but it doesn’t take long for him to come around and make friends. Bailey doesn’t enjoy getting too close to other dogs, but he will happily walk with quieter ones that won’t pay him too much attention. He would benefit from positive encounters with calm, well behaved dogs as this may help his own confidence. He is quite strong when he’s on his lead so would benefit from some loose lead training which we have started at the rehoming centre, to make it more enjoyable for all involved! He has found himself at he centre through no fault of his own and would thrive in a home with children aged 16 and over. If you think Bailey could be

The power of imagination (and why you should be using it)
SOMETIMES when I try and get people or clients to visualise things, they might struggle to actually do so. If this is the case, I’ll ask them about something that has happened in their recent past. As they’re doing this, they’re able to access images from recent events that they have experienced in order for them to explain to me what they’ve recently been up to. When a client has done this, I can then get them to visualise things they want to happen in the near future. Musicians, sports people, entrepreneurs etc, have all used imagination to help them overcome challenges. Golfers have used imagination, for example to help get the perfect shot or round, by first going through it in their mind – no practice needed. Here are five reasons why we should be using imagination today: n It can help you overcome hurdles. As I’ve just mentioned, so many professionals use imagination exercises. Not only that, if you
LIVERPOOL PERSONAL TRAINER
with Paul Coshott think about what you want to achieve or where you want to go, by using imagination, it will help you develop beliefs that whatever you want is going to happen. n Imagination can ignite our passion. We probably spend most of our time stressing about money, bills, jobs, relationships etc, and being in a state of ‘survival’. If we dream about the possibilities of what can happen it will fire up our imagination which in turn will ignite our passions. n Imagination and thoughts create our future. I’m sure we’ve all come across this saying somewhere, but as imagination generates passion, it also gives us energy,
with which changes will occur. “Imagination is everything. It is the preview for life’s coming attractions” – Einstein. n When was the last time you saw a young child play? Kids can turn a cardboard box into a spaceship or create a story with a couple of toys. Watching the world through a child’s eyes can remind us of what imagination can do for us. n Sometimes, reality can get the better of us. The news, social media, newspapers etc, all give out negative information. It’s no wonder people suffer from anxiety and other things these days. If we choose to use our imaginative muscle this helps us to create hope and where there is hope you have the opportunity for transformation and change. FREE Cookbook! CELEBRITY ARTICLE

Celebrity article – Bernie Taupin By Tim Saunders
ELTON John’s lyricist/cosongwriter Bernie Taupin has lived in America since 1992. His 30-acre ranch in California is now on the market with a view to bringing his children up in a different part of America. Buying his ranch enabled him to become a cowboy: “My heroes in life are cowboys” the retired rodeo champion told the Daily Telegraph. “ When I grew up in England in the ‘50s and ‘60s we all played cowboys and Indians and watched westerns on TV and it entranced me”. It was while living in Lincolnshire – where his younger brother Kit was born - that Bernie became obsessed with cowboy movies. “I was intoxicated by the myth of the west. The music I listened to – Johnny Cash and the like – the films I watched, even the history I was interested in: I wanted to live like a cowboy”. When Elton has a new album in mind he contacts Bernie who
then spends a few weeks writing lyrics. Bernie then emails them to Elton. “I used to fax them” he said. “It took a long time to drag this guy into the 21st century!” But Elton does now have an iPad and a computer. Elton has only ever visited Bernie in America once. They famously never write songs in the same room. Being apart, he says, has contributed to their success because they are not around each other long enough to get bored or frustrated. He doubts that they will ever retire.
Painting now occupies 80 per cent of Bernie’s time with his works selling for up to £16,000. He also produces a twice weekly radio programme. All the music he plays is from his own collection of 15,000 albums which he started collecting while living at Elton’s mother’s house in Pinner. During this time, when he shared a bunk-bed with Elton, Bernie was earning £5 a week while Elton received £10 because he sang. This wealth divide has continued. Today, Bernie is worth $70m (£52m) according to TheRichest.com while Elton is worth $500m (£370m), according
to CelebrityNetWorth.com. The duo is celebrating 50 years of success. It all started for Bernie when he answered an advertisement in the New Musical Express aged 17. Until this point he had a succession of jobs including a traineeship in the print room of his local weekly newspaper. He left and turned to dancing, playing snooker and drinking. Elton John had also answered the same advert. Neither Bernie nor Elton passed their auditions but their talents were recognised and they were put in touch with each other. And so in 1969 the first Elton John album was released featuring Bernie’s lyrics and the duo have now worked together on more than 30 albums. Bernie’s lyrics include hits like Tiny Dancer, Nikita and Candle in the Wind. In September 1997, he rewrote the lyrics of Candle in the Wind for Candle in the Wind 1997, a tribute to the late Diana, Princess of Wales. Elton has only made a couple of albums with other lyricists.

SPORT West Derby Hockey Club’s season ends By Mark Williams
AFTER a longer than usual season all league activity has come to a close for West Derby and we’ve definitely seen some highs and lows! The Men’s 1st XI finished their solid season safe in Division 2 North, after a strange run of fixtures which saw them play local rivals Sefton Men’s 1st XI in back to back games following the disruption caused by the infamous Beast from the East! An extremely difficult season for the Men’s 2nd XI saw them eventually relegated to North West Division 5. Whilst the relegation itself is disheartening for the lads, nothing can be taken away from their effort and commitment this season, they were after all a brand new team of rookies – half of whom had never picked up a stick before! The second team have already regrouped and brought home some silverware in the off-season (look forward to hearing about this next month!).

South disrupted by bad weather By Jim Stanway The success story for many at West Derby is that of the Ladies 1st XI who again have had to endure a complete overhaul of their squad. Not only did the ladies narrowly lose out to the eventual league champions in the Super Plate Final last month, they put together a strong second half of the season registering four wins out of eight to see them finish comfortably above local rivals Liverpool Sefton Ladies 5th XI. On the whole not a bad year for West Derby – we’re already looking forward to next season!

SOUTH Liverpool FC remain leaders of the West Cheshire League first division table but continue to have a host of matches postponed due to the ongoing bad weather. The team have not played at home since the end of February and have played only two games in the last four weeks. Despite conceding a first minute penalty at Chester side Upton AA, South scored twice through Paul Lundon and Alex Woodcock within the first 20 minutes to edge in front. Despite missing further chances to settle the game, South kept out the opposition for the rest of the match despite finishing with 10 men. The team have a cushion of seven points at the top of the table despite losing to a late goal at mid-table Maghull. Again, missed chances meant the team were walking a tightrope and this time they paid the price. The team now have eight games to play and the season has been extended by two weeks to mid-May. However with wet weather continuing into April we might still

be playing in June! The reserves’ chances of winning the second division title have been extinguished with two defeats and conceding a last minute equaliser to Maghull Reserves. Leading 2-1 through goals from David Mee and Adam Shelton with five minutes to go against local rivals Mossley Hill Reserves, the team then conceded two goals. The game against Maghull Reserves saw the team go two goals up through a brace by David Mee but the lead disappeared in the last 10 minutes. The youth team remain on course for a treble in the West Cheshire League having made progress in the league cup with a walkover against Maghull Town and a hard fought 2-1 win over Bootle with second half goals from Curtis Elias and Liam Murphy after ending the first half a goal down. The team have reached the Liverpool County FA Youth Cup final which will be staged at Walton Hall Park on Tuesday 15th May - against Bootle! The team remain in pole position in the youth division although rivals Mossley Hill are nine points behind with three games in hand!
successfully managed to secure places in their respective leagues. And, finally, the W5s “won some, lost some and did ok”. It was a valiant effort for the women. #GirlPower. The men didn’t do too badly either. Firstly, congratulations are due for the M2s who were promoted with games to spare! The M1s and 3s, having been promoted last year, had tough seasons ahead of them but truly showed that they deserved to be in their current leagues. The M3s were the second top goal scorers in the league, scoring a whopping 62 goals in 18 games.

New Subaru Outback exceeds expectations By Tim Saunders
“IT’S too big, I can’t drive it” says my wife when she tries to drive the Subaru Outback. True, it is a large vehicle. But if given the chance it exceeds expectations. Because here we have an estate that boasts a massive boot, large enough (once the retractable cover is removed) for all the stuff that the Saunders family regularly travels with: two pushchairs, travel cot, luggage and lots of food. And there’s still room to change my young son’s nappy. But the great thing is that when behind the wheel the driver forgets that it’s an estate car. This is a thoroughly capable vehicle both on and off road because it is equipped with all symmetrical all-wheel drive. Basically this is as safe as it gets with all the wheels talking to each other and working together to produce a perfect driving experience no matter what the terrain. “I can’t drive this, it’s not a manual” moans my wife. “And where’s the handbrake?” It’s at times like this that Caroline and I are at loggerheads. I try as best I can to point her in the right direction but she refuses to accept these technological changes. Instead of a traditional handbrake there’s an electric one operated at a push of a button. Its seven-speed automatic gearbox can also be driven like a manual thanks to the paddleshifts either side of the steering wheel but this isn’t up Caroline’s street either. Driving in automatic mode the dials have a blue glow but select manual mode and the glow
changes to red. I take the Subaru for a run down the M25 where I see some appalling erratic driving. A Mercedes undercuts at speed a row of crawling traffic in the outside line and then veers in and out of the traffic in a similar fashion to a slalom skier. This is a heart in the mouth stuff. Moments later we pull over for a police car. Was the driver trying to evade them, was he fed up with queues of traffic or was he on drugs? It’s a worry. Britain’s motorways do leave drivers feeling like they are on a conveyor belt; no matter what speed you do it seems impossible to become the car in front – during the day at any rate. The ‘Scooby Doo’ is fitted with an intelligent cruise control which delights in moments like this because it will brake and accelerate itself all the while keeping a set distance behind the car in front. These systems are always too slow for me when it comes to accelerating but I expect this is all in the name of economy. What I do like is that the driver can override by pushing the accelerator to the floor and then once you’re going fast enough you can take your foot off the gas and the system will take over once again.
