Filming in Liverpool breaks records again LIVERPOOL Film Office is not only celebrating its 30th anniversary but also a ‘reel-y’ top performance in 2019, breaking all records for the fourth consecutive year. Latest figures show that the Liverpool City Region enjoyed a bumper year for filming, with 324 different film and TV projects filming here. Over the years, the city has welcomed high-end TV dramas such as The Crown, Years and Years, War of the Worlds and Sky Atlantic’s Tin Star. Executive producer for Tin Star, Alison Jackson said: “Filming in Liverpool has been a fantastic
experience. “Liverpool City Region provided us with a wealth of cinematic locations, and the support we received from Liverpool Film Office and the people of this city has been instrumental in creating our explosive third series.” This is great news for the local economy which saw a £17.6m boost in as a result – an increase of £1.5m on 2018. Deputy Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “We can safely say Liverpool is maintaining its crown as one of the most filmed cities outside of London.”

Dashalong’s deeds RECENTLY-discovered documents give an insight into the extent of the Earl of Sefton’s estates at different periods. The fascinating relics lift the lid on the huge tracts of land once owned by the Molyneux family of Croxteth Hall. One, Abstract of the Title of the Right Honorable William Philip Earl of Sefton to his Freehold Estates in the Country of Lancaster, refers to the 2nd Earl (1772 to 1838) – a colourful character nicknamed Lord Dashalong. Pictured in caricature (inset) with a deed, he drove horses and carriages at breakneck speeds, scattering people and animals as he thundered around his lands. Dating from about 1800, the 42-page printed collection of deeds goes into minute detail and includes a partial family pedigree. It chronicles land deeds dating back to 1704, naming some of the most wealthy and powerful landowners of the times. This was an era when the Molyneux family were Viscounts before being elevated to Earls in 1771. Previous to reforms in late Victorian times, women had to hand over personal wealth and properties to their husbands when they married. Ruined Liverpool Castle was still standing
in 1704 and a deed mentions the “rents, fees, perquisites and profits reserved or arising out of the same.” The Molyneux family were hereditary
By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society
constables of Liverpool Castle for hundreds of years, responsible for law and order. They were likewise ancestral stewards of West Derby Courthouse, also referred to in the deed. Now Grade II*-listed and open to the public at certain times, the Tudor courthouse was a working building in the centre of the Village until 1910. The deeds go into minute detail, listing properties and lands of the vast Molyneux estates. There are tenements, cottages, orchards, gardens, barns, stables, outhouses – even a rabbit warren. These help to build up a picture of life in 18th century England when most people lived in the countryside and worked on the land. The last deed, drawn up in 1800, refers to Frederick Augustus, Earl of Berkeley. A little-known branch of the family, the Berkeley Molyneux, were descendants of Lord Dashalong. Following his disapproval of a son’s marriage, they were mysteriously omitted from the family tree in editions of Burke’s Peerage up to the time of Hugh, 7th and last Earl of Sefton. n Join the West Derby Society at its 7.30pm Wednesday meetings on March 18 and April 15 at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

Eat like a local on your next Italian holiday By Jennifer Carey
AMAZING wines, fascinating history and vistas to die for, Italy has been top of the destination charts for decades. And with Liverpool John Lennon Airport now offering flights to no less than six destinations, there’s no better time to go. Regardless of what takes you there, there is always that one thing that pulls people in from all over the world – the food. Now, I know most of us probably think that it’s as simple as pizza and pasta, and you’re not wrong. But Italian cuisine offers so much more and, if you get it right, every mealtime is pure joy. Here are my tips for experiencing the very best of Italy...
n Do NOT ask for Spaghetti Bolognese! A classic dish found on most menus is Ragù alla Bolognese – not to be confused with Spaghetti Bolognese. Never ask for spaghetti Bolognese in Italy – it’s not an authentic dish! The ‘real’ Bolognese is a meat based sauce served over fresh tagliatelle pasta, topped with a generous spoonful of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Yum! n Embrace the veggie life Italy is close to paradise for veggies. There are plenty of delicious dishes that cater for both vegetarian and pescatarian diets plus a growing vegan scene. Aubergine is the star of many veggie dishes and I recommend Parmigiana di melanzane, fried aubergine, smothered in layers
of cheese and tomato sauce, and Pasta alla Norma. I’m not sure who Norma is but this pasta dish is sublime and usually served with smoked ricotta cheese on top. n Fast food, Sicilian style Perfect for casual lunches or a quick (but hardly light!) snack, I give you ‘Arancini’! Deep fried stuffed rice balls straight out of Sicily, they are a real crowd pleaser all over the country. They come with a variety of fillings like ragù (meat sauce), fungi (mushroom), cheese and much more. BEWARE – they really are as good as they sound. n Go for ‘slow food’ The Slow Food movement started in Italy in the 80’s and promotes local food and traditional cooking. Each region of Italy has their own regional speciality meat, cheese, dish or wine. Find out what they are by
asking the locals and join the slow food revolution! n Gelato like a pro Yes, it really is different there and yes, it really is delicious. Each town has a gelateria that is ‘the only place to go’, find out where it is and hot-foot it over there. Avoid places where the ice cream is piled high - looks tempting but it’s very much style over substance. n Breakfast the Italian way Pick a nearby cafe and order a cappuccino and a brioche/ cornetto (that’s a croissant to me and you). I recommend the alla crema filling but only for those with a sweet tooth! For seasoned coffee drinkers, order an espresso or macchiato but make sure you drink it standing up at the bar, just like the locals. Buon appetito! n COMING SOON: I explore the sights and cuisine of Naples...

Wizards Thatch for a romantic stay
JUST imagine falling into a Harry Potter novel – that’s exactly how I felt when I had the chance to stay at Wizards Thatch. Just over the border in Cheshire, Wizards Thatch is five star boutique accommodation in the celebrity hotspot of Alderley Edge. It has been described as “ one of the most romantic places to stay in all of England “ With medieval sounding suites, Camelot, Merlin and The Wizardry guests are treated to pure nostalgia in fairytale surroundings. We stayed in The Wizardry in the oldest part of the building
reputedly going back over 400 years. On entering you step back in time and are dazzled by all the memorabilia that surrounds it walls which are painted in dark Arabian Red. This is an historian’s sweetshop - everywhere you look there is something of interest that takes your eye. The lounge is big with a low beamed oak ceiling and sumptuous settees. No wonder Wizards Thatch has over 900 excellent Tripadvisor reviews – the place is spotless. Hat’s off to the housekeepers who keep everything spotless
and that is no mean feat, for we counted over 300 bottles mainly “Gingers” in the lounge alone. Upstairs the Master bedroom has a magnificent seven foot four poster bed which is draped in red and gold tapestries. It has that medieval feel with its stripped wooden original floors and luxurious sheepskin rugs. There is an ensuite bath / shower and a separate ensuite wc and washbasins. Next to the bedroom there is a small single bedroom which we used as a dressing room. Wizards Thatch is less than one minute’s walk away from
Alderley’s famous street of restaurants and bars that now adorn this celebrity Cheshire turf. The village is noted for its famous clientele ( David Beckham was a former resident ) who enjoy the lifestyle it has to offer. After a great meal at one of the Italian restaurants we couldn’t wait to get back and relax and let the centuries old aura cast its spell on us. For reservations see their website www.wizardsthatch.co.uk or call Ian on 07951 602969. For the best deals book direct – get early check ins and late check outs.

Some favourite tipples By Trevor Langley
MY thoughts are that it is always a good idea to have a range of drinks available, when guests, family or friends, come to visit. Looking for something to please prior to a meal if dining and to pair with starters – leaving main course wines to everyone’s own choice – and making suggestions for dessert accompaniments, I located the following. Many people like to be greeted with a sherry. Dry, pale, cream or sweet – each to their own. Also, something sparkling is always a good ‘intro’ and sparkling wines are regularly served at events and occasions. Asti Martini
ticks this box, admirably. This Italian production is aromatic and sweet, using Moscato Bianco grapes to great advantage. Fruits are very pleasantly evident on the mouthfeel, for this popular sparkler. Moscato (sparkling) is a further suggestion from Italy, which is often chosen, by many. Again, having a lower alcohol content than numerous other wines, this is a great ‘pleaser’, too. Leaving main course wines to everyone’s individual preferences, we now come to the dessert pairings and end of meal experiences.
Gin is very much in favour (and flavour) right now. Truth is, it has always been a regular choice for a lot of connoisseurs. Raspberry & Rose Gin Liqueur is produced using raspberry and rose flavours. Pink Grapefruit & Elderflower Gin Liqueur has the natural flavours of pink grapefruit and elderflower. Gingerbread Gin Liqueur is made by incorporating ginger and cinnamon flavours. Flavoured gins are extremely popular and have regular ‘devotees’. Further interesting and very satisfying flavoured gins are available, also.
Should a tonic/soda water be preferred with a liqueur then Blood Orange and Rosemary tonic water or soda water with a hint of lemon (Sicilian) will most certainly not disappoint. For a great number of lovers of various drinks, including gins, adding a tonic or soda water extends the pleasure(s). Of course, there are many dessert wines and liqueurs available, which will fill this last category. I sourced these productions at an Asda store, where I always find great value (and expert advice, if required). Very worthwhile locating.

The toothache “I’M sorry, I can’t find anything wrong,” said Pullit the dentist ratcheting up the chair until his patient sat upright. Seamus looked back in disbelief: “It’s there day and night, throbbing so much I can’t get any peace.” His mouth had been subjected to all manner of probing – even a group of dental students had been invited to examine his molars. “You have excellent teeth for someone your age,” said Pullit motioning him to the door. “I suggest a break in routine or a holiday might help.” Seamus resorted to desperate measures. “You have teeth like a horse – wonderfully strong and sound,” said his friend Harry the vet. “Obviously this is nothing official – I could be struck off for treating a human – I’m sorry but I can’t pull ‘em out.” Seamus nervously stroked his beard and pondered. He had tried all the homely
remedies but none of them worked. The pain persisted, a dull pulsating constantly disturbing his rest and peace of mind. Village counsellor Mona Moon recommended he visit Old Mother Peers who was celebrated for her traditional herbal remedies. Seamus trudged up to the thatched cottage, his weary steps plodding the footpath strewn with mud and cowpats. Old Mother Peers had just finished her milking and was settling in front of a roaring fire
with her clay pipe and mug of tea. She kept an open house and Seamus sat down opposite her on an ancient settle. The herbalist poured him a mug of the tea and a rambling consultation followed – Seamus doing most of the talking while Old Mother Peers stared into the fire. “I am going to transfer the pain into your big toe,” she said suddenly. She reached into the old cupboard, quickly locating a packet of powder: “Take a teaspoon of this with milk morning, noon and night.” Seamus did as he was instructed. Two days later he woke up without toothache for the first time in weeks. He was euphoric and laughed out aloud, flinging off the bedclothes and leaping out of bed. When his feet touched the cold linoleum, it felt like an electric shock flashed and sizzled from his left big toe.
Strange Tale
by Anton Valdemart It was agony. He wrapped his foot is a damp bandage, ate a hasty breakfast and painfully set off for Old Mother Peers’ cottage. “I did tell you I was transferring the pain to your big toe,” she said firmly. Seamus stood shaking on the cold stone flags: “I have never experienced pain worse than this,” he moaned. “Oh yes you have!” screeched Old Mother Peers bringing her boot crashing down on to his toe. Seamus screamed in pain, leaping up and down holding his foot. Then, slowly, the excruciating torment eased and a blissful warm feeling spread from his toe over the rest his body. Old Mother Peers smiled, handed him a steaming mug and said soothingly: “Shock treatment – it never fails.” Seamus had a pain-free life ever after. n Read my next Strange Tale in the Link: Sunflower Seeds.

Busy modelling at one of my favourite places HEY guys and welcome to March / April issue of Life ‘n’ Style! I have been really busy these past few weeks with photo shoots for Matalan, Pretty Little Thing, Missguided and MissPap at The Shankly Hotel in Liverpool City Centre. Definitely one of my fav places to work… I get asked all the time why I love working at this venue and the reason is, unlike the majority of hotels where the rooms are all the same, the rooms here offer something totally different. Each room tells a story with a different theme, colours and décor, even down to the baths or Jacuzzi in the bathrooms. This is ideal for me when I’m promoting outfits or underwear as I always choose a room and colour scheme to compliment that look. For this reason, it’s become really popular with groups of young girls as it has the best backgrounds and backdrops for the perfect selfie! Also, keep your eyes peeled as the programme I was filming a few months back at The Shankly is going to be on TV in the next few weeks. Here are a few little pics of the latest outfits that I have been modelling. Make sure you check my social media pages as I always promote discount codes of up to 25 per cent off.
I really liked this Pink Faux Leather Plunge Puff Sleeve Dress (£35 – Missguided) – the material is so soft and feels really expensive. It has a really nice fit too. I wore the size 10 and it fitted me perfectly.
Another dress I really liked was this Plunge Puff Sleeve Bardot Dress for £32 (Miss Pap). It’s a proper ‘Barbie’ dress but really flattering on the waist and bum. The size 10 fitted me like an actual glove! Don’t know if I could have gone for a Chinese banquet in it though! If you’re looking for a conservative but feminine look this Pink Satin Contrast Detail Button Up Blazer (£30 – Pretty Little Thing) is good. This was a little bit snug on - I wore the 10 and normally the 10’s are perfect for me in PLT but this was a slimmer and longer fit than they normally do.

Another shoot I have done recently is for a new eyelash company / brand called Papillion Beauty. They have lovely long thick lashes that can pimp up any outfit for a night out. You can buy them online for £8.50 if you are a makeup artist or you just like to buy in bulk they offer a trade price of 60 per cent off when you buy 20 lashes or more!
That’s it from me... till next time! Love Jade x

Nearly Spring
Winter is nearly over And spring is coming on strong Soon the dark days will vanish And spring won’t seem so long A little lighter everyday Fills you with such a cheer Soon winter will be over And no one will shed a tear I look for the early flowers To show their little heads Waking from their slumber In their winter’s bed Pushing up through the leaves Their tiny little shoots Have they really been dormant Attached to their roots
Spring always offers such hope With the daffodils all in bloom They may not be your favourite flower But watch them brighten up a room Now I understand Why teddy bears sleep for so long Avoiding the winter And the rain that comes along Sleeping in their den Keeping nice and warm Only waking up when winter is gone

FILMS SET TO BRIGHTEN YOUR SCREENS THIS SPRING
SPRING is in the air and you can be sure that your local cinema is gearing up for the brighter days and Easter school holidays with some fun films set for release. Spring, especially Easter, always provides a solid selection of family friendly films so sit tight as we run through the best family titles due to be released in March and April. Onward Released: 6th March 2020
It’s been an unusually slow start by Disney’s standards so far this year but their first cinematic release of 2020 is a big one. Adding to their high quality catalogue of Pixar titles, Onward tells the story of two elf brothers who venture into the real world to see if it is still possible to discover a little bit of magic in it. The often funny and likeable Chris Pratt leads the voice cast, with Tom Holland playing his brother.
Trolls World Tour Released: 20th March 2020 Yet another sequel but given the success of the first Trolls movie and its spin-off Netflix series, who’s complaining? This time, the fuzzy-haired creatures set out on an adventure to discover different clans of trolls who play different styles of music. The vocally gifted Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake return, along with Kelly Clarkson, and even Chance the Rapper drops in to entertain the masses.
Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway Released: 27th March 2020 After the runaway success of the first Peter Rabbit film, Sony will be hoping for the same again (hence the sub-title). James Corden returns as the voice of the cheeky bunny again and Domhnall Gleeson and Rose Byrne will reprise their roles as Mr. McGregor and his love interest. Other major cast members include Daisy Ridley, Margot Robbie and David Oyelowo.
Mulan Released: 27th March 2020 Nowadays, the kids’ holidays wouldn’t be the kids’ holidays without yet another Disney liveaction/CGI remake. Last year, we were treated to three of them with Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King and it seems they’re not planning on stopping them anytime soon. Easter gives us Mulan, starring Chinese-American actress Liu Yifei, a story of a brave female warrior who needs to disguise herself as a man so she can join the army.
The Secret Garden Released: 17th April 2020 Based on the classic novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden has been majestically brought to life by the same producers that brought you Paddington. A charming story with a fantastic cast including Colin Firth and Julie Walters, we follow a little girl who is sent away to live with her uncle at an isolated Yorkshire estate, only to discover a magical, hidden garden locked away to everyone. Happy viewing!

Allergies in dogs ALLERGIES are extremely common in our canine companions. Just like Hay Fever in people, once our furry friends develop these allergies they are here for life. The allergens cause itching behaviours such as scratching, rubbing, chewing or excessive grooming of the skin as well as scooting and/or head shaking. Itching leads to multiple skin lesions, i.e. reddening, alopecia and skin trauma. This leads to infection. Dogs can have these allergic flare-ups seasonally or throughout the entire year.
We can do specific blood tests to see what an individual dog’s allergic trigger is but most the time this is not possible. Therefore we need to control these flare ups by breaking the itch cycle with oral medication and topical skin products and try to minimise flare ups with ongoing management, i.e. diet, longterm medications, parasite control, shampoos and creams. You should seek veterinary care with any skin condition as constant itching and sore skin can lead to chronic skin issues as well as behavioural problems such as restlessness and depression.
Cats of the month – Archie and Athena ARCHIE is seven months old and would like a home with his mum Athena (two years old). He was born outside and it’s taken a while for our us to gain their trust. They are still a little shy but in a quiet, patient home they will come on really quickly. If you think you could offer Archie and Athena the home
Dog of the month – Tia TIA is a delightful 10-year-old Staffy cross who just adores being around people, even though she spends a great deal of time asleep! She’ll have a mad five minutes where all the toys come out of the box and are thrown about, then she’ll settle down for another nap. She is still active and enjoys her walks, and she can live with children aged eight and over. Tia would rather be the only dog at home and she is perfectly house-trained. If you think Tia could be the
four-legged friend you are looking for, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP. It’s open 12pm-4pm every day except Wednesdays, when it is closed. You can also call on 0300 303 0292, 8am-8pm MondayFriday and 9am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. To find out more about any of the dogs at the centre, visit www. dogstrust.org.uk You can also follow the doggy ‘tails’ on Twitter @DT_Merseyside and Instagram, @dogstrust_merseyside
they deserve then please do get in touch! For adoption enquiries please also contact Garston Animal Rescue on 0151 494 0470 or 07745 167170. Many thanks to The Link for their continued support in helping us to find homes for stray and abandoned animals in Merseyside, we couldn’t manage without you.

Croft struggle to regain last season’s form By Mick Titherington
HAVING gone last season’s campaign without suffering a defeat, Stoneycroft are now struggling to regain the form that saw them finish as champions. Injuries to key players and other absentees have led to enforced changes. The Maiden Lane based club have now suffered their third defeat in 12 games, putting any thoughts of another promotion on hold. The exits from cup competitions have also added to the club’s woes. Perhaps the most worrying aspect for manager Paddy McBride is his side’s failure to close games down, allowing
opponents to come from behind to claim the points. James Kennedy has retained his goal scoring ability but even his hat-trick was not enough to secure victory against visitors Empress as the home side squandered a three-goal lead in a second half collapse in which they conceded four. Despite these disappointments Paddy remains convinced he can turn things around and get his side challenging for top slot once again. “Now is the time for us all to pull together,” he said. “We’ve got the talent, we just need to concentrate and control games more.
