INSIDE
ALDER HEY PARK By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society
THE detached house stood in its own private park, reached through gates guarded by a lodge. Two drives ran parallel leading to Alder Hey house – one for the occupants and the other for deliveries. The carriage drive ended in an oblong area in front of the house entrance where coachmen could turn around before leaving the way they came in. Delivery vans followed the other drive to the tradesmen’s entrance. It was 1910 and developers were about to move in after the last occupant of Alder Hey, prosperous merchant William Leeming, departed. His butler Thomas Dodd, who

lived in the lodge, helped pack everything away before putting the shutters up on the empty residence. It was goodbye to the walled parkland sweeping down to Eaton Road. Alder Hey was built on a gentle slope, enjoying panoramic views over the countryside dotted with other large houses.
The house and 28 acres of land had been purchased in 1906 by the West Derby Union’s Poor Law Guardians to build a hospital for sick poor children. The new hospital would soon replace the house and open parkland, including neat copses and a large pond, would be obliterated. In 1907 Liverpool Corporation had acquired a neighbouring country estate to create Springfield Park, doubtless designed to enhance the new hospital with its trees and open spaces. The new hospital opened in 1914 and a postcard from that time is captioned Alder Hey Park (pictured). The impressive stone hospital gates, seen from Honeys Green Lane, stand next to a lodge. Eaton Cottage, a substantial house, stood behind the stone wall on the right. There were
also outbuildings and large glass houses. More than a century later, demolition of the old hospital is nearing completion and work will begin creating new parkland to replace land on Springfield Park now occupied by the new hospital. Generations of patients have many memories of the old hospital buildings. As a small child I had excellent treatment including two eye operations to correct a squint. On another occasion I had a wax crayon extracted from my nose after fooling about at a school art lesson. The Grade II-listed Alder Hey house lodge and adjoining gate in Alder Road survive to remind us of an earlier time. n Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30pm on Wednesday January 17 at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

Jim and Doreen raise funds for the Poppy Appeal and Air Ambulance We received a lovely letter from LINK reader Jim Smith recently: ‘My wife Doreen and I live in West Derby and have been married for 54 years. Doreen joined the WRAC in 1955 at Townsend Avenue with the King’s Regiment and we were both in the TA. I started out in Liverpool Scottish TA in 1954 and then with 910 Co’y RASC at Rose Lane. We met
when Doreen moved from Townsend Avenue to Rose Lane and we got married in 1963. We have both been members of the RBL (Tuebrook branch) for the past five years and, each year since, we have sold poppies at Tesco in Deysbrook Lane, which used to be an army barracks. This year we raised £8,500 and over the last 5 years we have raised a total of over £30,000.
Doreen and I are members of the King’s Regiment Association and the Liverpool Scottish Association which we support and try and help the girls and lads who have served the country. We have a caravan in Shropshire and at a site barbecue last year we decided to ask for donations for the Midlands Air Ambulance. I also suggested that we have a raffle so we went round all the caravanners
for anything we could raffle and had a really good response with lots of wines, spirits and other good prizes. We raised £500 last year and this year we raised £950. For those who don’t know, the nearest Ambulance Station is some 24 miles away and this is why the Air Ambulance is a great help in getting sick and injured people to hospital’. Jim Smith

West Derby LINK – ‘at the heart of our community’ Happy New Year from West Derby and Croxteth Park LINK Your favourite local independent paper– and remember The LINK goes into thousands of homes!!!!! And thousands are picked up in supermarkets, post office, libraries every single month. Welcome to your January 2018 issue of The LINK. Where does the time go? What will 2018 bring for us all? The LINK is 12 years old this year! I would like start by thanking everyone who sends in emails and letters and who phones us and to all those of you who stop us on the road to say how much you love The LINK. I am as passionate and as
committed as ever about The LINK. A few years ago I was out with the papers, it was a rainy day and I walked into a shop and the lovely, friendly shop assistant said how sorry she felt for me having to drop papers in the rain and how she wouldn’t like to have to do my job. I am not going to pretend it is all wonderful, of course it can be hard work, I work long hours and it consumes my life at times but, as I walked out that day, I remember thinking that I couldn’t wish for a better job. I absolutely love the LINK and I have not once regretted leaving my last job at Trinity Mirror. Being out on the road and meeting people is the part I love most of all about my job. I love it!
So thank you for making it so enjoyable. Well, any plans for 2018? You may simply want to make a determined effort to get into shape in the coming year or to make those changes to your home that you keep talking about but don’t worry because help is at hand! There are plenty of LINK traders who are willing to help you with all sorts of New Year changes. Just take a look inside the paper – they may just be able to help with that New Year resolution and assist in changing the course of the next twelve months for you and your family. As 2018 dawns, all of us at The LINK would like to wish our readers and advertisers a very happy, healthy and

New Heads at Merchants Taylors – Claire Tao and David Wickes.
Appointment of new Heads at Merchant Taylors’ Schools MERCHANT Taylors has appointed two new Heads to lead the Boys’ and Girls’ Senior Schools in 2018. Mrs Claire Tao, who is currently Deputy Head at the City of London School for Girls (CLSG), will take over as Headmistress from Mrs Louise Robinson when she leaves at Easter. Mr David Wickes will join Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School as Headmaster in September 2018. David is currently the Deputy Headmaster at Warwick School. These key appointments will lead the Schools into
the next important stage of their development as top North West independent day schools. Working closely together the new Heads will guide these historic establishments through an exciting period of celebration and change as they move toward the 400th anniversary of its foundation in 2020. The chair of Governors, Mrs Beverley Bell CBE, worked with a number of her colleagues, assisted by Saxton Bampfylde, to recruit Claire and David. She said: “We were impressed by the calibre and

number of applicants the posts attracted. “Both are highly qualified for the roles and are experts in male and female pedagogy which is crucial for the Schools’ single sex education focus. “In addition, they will work closely together, along with the Heads of the Primary and Junior Schools, Janet Thomas and Julie Yardley, to maximise the opportunities for all our pupils to mix together outside the classroom – one of the key unique benefits of our 4-18 family of schools set up.”

Tim Saunders talks to Tony Hadley ... TONY Hadley is probably best known as the former singer of Spandau Ballet (he is no longer associated with the band). “My first encounter with singing was at my primary school where I regularly sang hymns.” Initially he wanted to become a doctor perhaps because he had a bone marrow infection at the age of 10. But then he discovered music. “My mum and dad bought me a tape recorder and my first album, The World of David Bowie.” When on holiday at the age of 13, Tony sang in front of 400 people. “But I forgot some of the words halfway through which was embarrassing. I did the same thing again in Holland a couple of weeks ago. “I was singing Rio by Duran Duran and forgot the second verse but the audience didn’t mind.” In 1976 Tony joined his first band whilst he was at school in Potters Bar. Then called The Roots they became The Cut, The Gentry, The Makers and finally Spandau Ballet. Its other members included: John Keeble; Steve Norman; Gary Kemp; and Michael Ellisson. When the group became
The Gentry in 1978, Martin Kemp joined, playing bass guitar. Doesn’t it seem a lifetime ago? We now see him sitting on a sofa in a DFS commercial or acting in a period drama. Spandau Ballet got a record contract with Chrysalis Records in 1980. “Our first hit was To Cut A Long Story Short which went to no. 5 in the U.K. charts.” They had worldwide success with fantastic hits such as Gold and continued recording until 1990. “Probably my favourite song from the Spandau Ballet days was Through the Barricades which I still sing along with Gold and True. “After Spandau Ballet disbanded, I embarked on a solo career signing to EMI and recording my first album, The State of Play. “After leaving EMI, I formed my own record
company, Slipstream Records and my first release was the single, Build Me Up from the film, When Saturday Comes.” Tony admits to being more confident now. “In the early days I was insecure. I now find sport and the gym take my mind off work. I also play for the Arsenal celeb team.” Not just that though, Tony regularly takes part in charity work. Earlier on this year he trekked through Venezuela helping to raise funds for Action Medical Research. In 1996 Tony embarked on an orchestral tour of Europe along with Joe Cocker, playing to 500,000 people in six weeks. He then signed a joint deal with Polygram TV and released his next solo album. He has collaborated with various dance acts and DJs such as Tin Tin Out. Next year is busy for Tony as he tours Europe. In February alone he will be singing live in Norway, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary and Austria. “My wife and my mum worry about me and that I’m doing too much, but I’m used to the lifestyle. I love working. I’ve never been a druggie, but I do like a drink.” www.tonyhadley.com

Set in present day Liverpool, the stage play is based on the novel Julia’s Banjo by Rob Fennah and Helen A Jones. Produced by Pulse Records Ltd in
association with Bill Elms, Lennon’s Banjo comes to Liverpool’s Epstein Theatre from April 24 to May 5. Pete Best’s confirmed performance dates are April 25 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and the 7.30pm show on May 5. Pete said: “I read the novel Julia’s Banjo some years ago and thought it was a great mix of fact and fiction with regards to The Beatles and the elusive banjo. It made me smile, a really enjoyable read. This show is going to be great fun!” Directed by Mark Heller, Lennon’s Banjo stars Eric Potts, Jake Abraham, Mark Moraghan, Stephanie Dooley, Lynn Francis and Roy Carruthers.

The contortionist

Strange Tale – By Anton Valdemart
VERA discovered her unusual talent when she was small and soon found out how to be the centre of attention wherever she was. The only dissenting voice came from Granny: “You’ll stick like that, mark my words.” Everyone else was charmed and entertained when Vera took up a posture, as she called the strange twisting of her limbs and body. The little girl would bounce into the room, fall on her face and bring her legs over her head and exclaim: “I’m a scorpion!” Then she would spread-eagle herself over the lino, arms and legs twisted into alarming angles: “Look out for the nasty crab!” There seemed to be no end to Vera’s creativity. In the school playground she would curl into a ball and roll around among her squealing friends. Then she would make her arms and legs disappear as she wrapped herself around a tree like a snake. Vera grew into a vibrant, energetic young woman whose lithe, statuesque form attracted attention wherever she went. She was a talented dancer and became a big hit among flappers doing the charleston in the smart ballrooms.
Vera’s interpretation of the dance, with loose flying limbs, created a sensation. “You ought to be a contortionist,” said her friend Emily one evening as they sipped cocktails. “You’d be a sensation.” Vera’s talents were recognised when the circus came to Sefton Park. The clowns had been careering around the ring before enticing Vera and other spectators from the front row. She ended up twisting herself into a knot retrieving several balloons the clowns threw at her. The crowd thundered its approval. Vera was signed up as Lithe Limbed Loretta, the Amazonian Wonder. Balloons became a key part of her act as she wriggled and contorted herself over the sawdust. Wearing a flesh-coloured body stocking and flimsy costume she was able to achieve a rapid change of positions and postures. Night after night the crowd roared. Vera concluded her act lying on her face, feet touching her head, silver balloons balanced on her fingers. Everyone came to see her when the circus hit town – even Granny. Vera decided to put on something special for her family. She introduced her audience
to The Turtle, a posture that required her to retract her head into her shoulders while tucking her limbs under her body. The effect was a triumph – it was just like watching a real turtle crawling on the beach. Instead of quickly resuming her normal shape, Vera’s face was flushed with discomfort and rising panic. The big top went silent with anticipation. Vera caught sight of a familiar face on the

I want to tell you about Bezzies. BEZZY BUDDIES – New Year New Bezzies Start the new year with Bezzy buddies! Join our website for free and see what events we have this coming year. Let’s make these the good old days. About Bezzy Buddies Bezzy Buddies was founded by local hairdresser Lynne Ainsworth, who owns Hairfields in Taggart Ave, Liverpool 16. After 20 years of marriage and going everywhere with her husband she found herself living alone and feeling quite lonely. She missed not having a partner to do certain things with so she joined numerous dating sites to try and find a partner. After several dates and meeting some lovely men, she decided that what she really needed were friends with similar interests and similar lifestyle. Someone she could go out with and go to nice places. That is when the seeds were sown for Bezzy Buddies and the rest
as they say is history. Lynne is passionate about Bezzies and arranges some fantastic events - going for drinks, dinner, dancing, bingo, concerts, gym, walking, shopping, night school, speed dating to name but a few. This is a community of women looking for like-minded women, IT IS NOT A DATING SITE! But if you would like to meet a partner then maybe you will find a friend in the same position as you and you can go speed dating or join a singles group together. It doesn’t matter what age or lifestyle, whether you are married, widowed or single you will have a good time with Bezzie Buddies. For example, I am married to Pete, we are not exactly social animals (we used to be, haha!) but we do have a busy social life together and separately, we like our holidays, we both work full time (I own and run The LINK) and I have plenty of friends, so I don’t get to as many Bezzy events as I perhaps would like to. That’s the beauty of Bezzies, you can choose which
WE had a great night out a few weeks ago. Lynne from Bezzy Buddies arranged tickets to a charity evening at The Elephant in Woolton Village – it was Simon Rimmer and Strictly friends. The tickets were only £15 each and included a glass of bubby and some really delicious nibbles! The best part of the night were the surprises. The crowd went mad when Simon introduced Aston Merrigold and Aljaz and Gemma and what fantastic sports they were. Anyway more about this our website.
front row and yelled: “Granny – I’m stuck!” Her grandmother sprang into the ring, put a foot on Vera’s shoulder and twisted her granddaughter’s head. There was a click and Vera was free. She stood up, hugged Granny and acknowledged the relieved cheers of the crowd. They became a very successful double act. n Read my next Strange Tale – Eternally Young – in the February Link. events suit you and you can either just go to an occasional event or you can be out socialising more regularly. At the Strictly night (above) I got talking to a lovely local lady who had lost her husband and been on her own for a while and had seen Bezzy Buddies in The South Liverpool LINK and decided to join. She told me she was having a great time and was delighted she had joined. I can’t think of anything worse than what she had been through, so of course I was delighted she had read about it in The LINK. It means so much to me to hear that. Lynne is passionate about Bezzies and arranges some fantastic events for us, so whether you are looking for a friend to go for drinks, dinner, dancing, bingo, concerts, gym, walking, shopping, night school, speed dating, then get in touch. Dog of the month – Benson BENSON is an eight-year-old Dorset Old Tyme Bulldog. He is the type of boy who makes everyone fall in love with him at first sight! He’s a senior Bulldog who will become an instant best friend, and he would be happy to spend the rest of his life sprawled on a duvet being fed. He is a little wobbly on his legs and can’t play as much as he’d like to, but he still enjoys a potter about and could potentially make a great companion for someone who isn’t very mobile themselves. Benson is currently in a foster home but if you call the centre on 0151 480 0660, they can arrange a meeting with this scrumptious boy. He gets along with other quiet dogs and can live with children aged 12 and over. If you think Benson could be the four-legged friend you are
looking for, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP. It’s open 12pm-4pm every day except Wednesdays, when it is closed. You can also call on 0300 303 0292, 8am-8pm Monday-Friday and 9am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. League success overcomes Cup woes for Stoneycroft By Mick Titherington
THE Cup provided little joy for Stoneycroft teams as both the youth team and first team were unceremoniously dumped out of their respective County Cup competitions and reminded themselves of the old adage “there’s always next year”. Promise and optimism turned to woe as both teams succumbed to opponents
they were expected to beat and ended any dreams they may have had of cup glory. Fortunately league form did not desert them as both teams remain ahead of the field in the league, the first team recording another emphatic 12-0 victory amongst their conquests. The youth team, although held to a draw, remain in top spot. Unfortunately the weather
has played havoc with fixtures and it has been a stop-start period for most clubs but of the games played the Vets managed to record their first victory and are now anxious to get on with their fixtures. All at Stoneycroft wish all readers and followers of their fortunes a happy and successful new year. All the best everyone.
South in action in their recent home game against Vauxhall Motors.
South to stay at top until 2018 By Jim Stanway
SOUTH Liverpool FC’s final West Cheshire League Division One game of 2017 saw the team retain a healthy lead at the top of the table. A 1-1 draw at nearest rivals Vauxhall Motors at a wet and snowy Ellesmere Port saw the team equalise through substitute Brad Williams with five minutes to go. Vauxhall had reduced the deficit at the top to seven points (with two games in hand) with a hard-fought 2-0 win in the reverse fixture at Jericho Lane three weeks previously when South paid the price for failing to take
their chances in the first half. A 2-0 win at lowly West Kirby with two goals from leading scorer Cameron Dalton when some of their main rivals’ fixtures were rained off has meant that the first team have now completed almost half of their league fixtures and have played all of their main rivals at least once. The reserves have had two solid wins in the last month, the highlight being a 2-1 win at previously unbeaten Ellesmere Port Town with goals from captain David Cringle and striker Bobby Murphy. A 2-0 home win over new

look Willaston, with goals from midfielders Jordan McGowan and Andy Walker, has meant that the team have three games in hand over league leaders Hale and are only six points behind. The youth team retained their unbeaten record with a last gasp equaliser in a 2-2 draw at much improved Vauxhall Motors. Two goals down in the first half, leading scorer Liam Murphy pulled one back before half-time. Going down to 10 men midway through the second half, the equaliser came in the last minute with a superb chip from centre forward Michael Kielty.

Fiat offers a visual feast with its Tipo By Tim Saunders
DESIGN is becoming more thought provoking. I notice this as I admire the new Fiat Tipo station wagon. There’s barely a straight panel on it. This has led me to cast my mind back to vehicles of the past. It seems that curves started to become fashionable in the ‘60s on the likes of the E-type Jaguar but many cars of that period were still boxy and this was the case right through to the ‘80s, even the ‘90s where straight lines still prevailed on the likes of the Vauxhall Cavalier. Of course this is a very general perception and there were exceptions to the rule such as TVR and the more specialist manufacturers. Over the next 20 years those straight lines were gradually rounded off, think of the Ford Granada and Vauxhall Omega. But we now live in a different era where manufacturers have gone back to the drawing board creating vehicles with a combination of straight lines and curves. The Fiat Tipo is a good example of this. The front wheel arches are a tasteful blend of slightly boxy curvaceousness which seamlessly blend into the equally well crafted bonnet. It looks chunkier from the side than head on. It’s a good effect. This is offset by the two-tone 16-inch alloy
wheels. Such a visual feast is a surprise from Fiat which has raised its game of late. The build quality is improved too when compared to Fiats of the past. Like a good recipe, sprinkled with the right amount of herbs and garnishes, the designers have done a Gordon Ramsay, successfully giving the Tipo station wagon a special personality. It has more than 500 litres load carrying capacity making it attractive as both a family car and a business proposition. “Is the bumper meant to be like that?” I ask the delivery driver pointing at the rear section which seems to jut out as if it has been forcibly pulled out of place. “Oh yes,” he chuckles. It’s as if the fabricating machine has gone too far. Fiat, which is the world’s seventh largest car maker, also owns one of America ’s most well-known car manufacturers, Chrysler. So the big American front
grille on the Tipo estate, which is very much of our time, is no surprise and helps this Italian cut a strong presence on the road. The boot is not so successful, looking weaker than the front in my opinion. And the back side panels have a hint of the Honda Accord estate about them. A generous smattering of chrome is both successful and appreciated by me. There’s a comfortable driving position, although the seat fabric seems a little thin as I feel my young son’s foot in the base of my back. It feels a sporty car and the diesel unit – coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox – can have a surprising sense of urgency. Fiat Tipo Station Wagon 1.6-litre diesel Price from £14,485 Top speed: 124mph 0-60mph: 10.1secs Power: 118bhp Economy: upto 76mpg Watch the videos at www.testdrives.biz
