KEEPERS OF THE CASTLE INSIDE By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society
LIVERPOOL Castle was built after the town was granted its charter by King John in 1207 and dominated the port for around 500 years. West Derby Castle was then abandoned and fell into ruin and replaced by a manor house. The site, known as Castle Field, can still be seen in Meadow Lane. Liverpool Castle stood next to the Pool – the creek which gave the port its name – on the site occupied by the Victoria Monument. Records show that in 1215 the new castle was provisioned for a siege at a time when the barons were rising against King John. This was the year the unpopular monarch signed Magna Carta recognising the rights and privileges of nobles, church and freemen. However, it would be 400 years before Liverpool Castle saw military action. The walls of the stronghold were damaged during the Civil War when Royalists besieged the town. By 1646 it was in need of
serious repairs. In 1659, at the time of the Commonwealth when the country was a republic, Parliament ordered the destruction of the castle. The gatehouse was pulled down and the walls reduced in height, leaving the rest of the building standing. Demolition stopped when the monarchy was restored in 1660. A few years later several people were living in houses among the ruins and a Captain Fazakerley built a mill inside. The Molyneux family, later Earls of Sefton, were appointed hereditary constables of Liverpool Castle in 1446. They were responsible for law and order and were also hereditary stewards of West Derby Courthouse. A footpath led from the castle through an orchard down to the Pool which was then crossed by a ferry or footbridge to the Great Heath, common land outside the town. The footpath became Lord Molyneux Street, later Lord Street. Lord refers to the hereditary title Viscount, which the eldest son became following the creation of the 1st Viscount

Molyneux in 1628.The viscounts were still governors of the castle but by this time it was unfit for occupation by men of their rank. As a result, Lord Molyneux’s House (pictured) was built near the top of Lord Street on the north side.
It stood alongside the castle until the remaining ruins were cleared in 1726. n Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30pm on Wednesday 15 November at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

Ricky Tomlinson talks to Tim Saunders RICKY Tomlinson is probably best known for playing Jim Royle in the Royle Family. His catchphrase ‘My arse!’ is equally memorable. In 2001 he was National Television Comedy Actor of the Year and was awarded Best Performance in Network Drama by the Royal Television Society. Ricky is a fine actor and director Ken Loach paid tribute: “His work – and comedy – springs from a life that has seen hardship and struggle and many changes in fortune. From his early days in the building trade and as one of the heroic Shrewsbury Two, he has always known which side he is on, as those who have experienced his generosity and loyalty will testify”. Britain’s first building strike was called in 1972. Ricky became a member of the Wrexham Strike Action Committee and peacefully picketed building sites but was later arrested and found guilty of unlawful assembly. Refusing to plead guilty, he went down for
Among the guests at Ricky and Rita’s wedding were the comedienne Faith Brown and the late Liz Dawn from Corrie. (Ricky signed an exclusive deal with OK magazine to publish his wedding photos).
two years. “They were tough times but my Liverpool sense of humour helped me survive”. On his release from prison he discovered that he had been blacklisted from the building trade. “So I became a stand-up comic touring the pubs and clubs. I started acting in 1979, when, at the age of 40, director Roland Joffe cast me in the lead role of the controversial
BBC film United Kingdom”. Yet Ricky admits to sometimes finding it difficult remembering his lines. “It does take me time. Fortunately Ken Loach and other directors are happy for me to improvise”. Ricky has starred in a variety of TV programmes and films: Brookside; Boys From The Blackstuff; Cracker; Down To Earth (which
sums Ricky up to a tee – he happily chats to anyone); The Royle Family; 51st State and Mike Bassett-England Manager. He has made one topselling comedy video entitled Laughter My Arse and written two books. The first, his autobiography, was called Ricky (available in all good bookshops priced £17.99) and was a number one bestseller. “So far it has sold half a million copies. It was in 2002 that my wife Rita sold it to Time Warner and I still can’t believe it”. Since this phenomenal success, Rita has become Ricky’s agent. Given that she knows his availability and the roles he likes, she insists it’s no problem negotiating his acting work. Ricky has now been commissioned to write a third book, which will be about his life in showbiz. In addition he has won 10 regional awards for comedy, personality and drama. His CD single Are You Lookin’ at Me was released in 2001 and
reached no. 18. So what’s Ricky up to now? Driving Ferraris and jetting abroad at every opportunity? Not a bit of it!
“We do have a big caravan that we take to Benidorm now and again, but to be honest when I’m not acting I’m doing DIY, which I’m not bad at.”

Light up a Life Appeal 2017 AT WOODLANDS Hospice we know Christmas can be a very difficult time if you have lost a loved one, or if you cannot be someone you love. Our Light up Life appeal gives you the opportunity to celebrate the life of a loved one by dedicating a light on our Christmas trees in December. Our beautiful Christmas tree at the Hospice is a truly amazing sight, seeing it adorned with hundreds of lights and knowing each light is dedicated to someone has such a special meaning. These lights continue to shine brightly throughout the festive season in celebration of your loved ones. Every light that shines out from our Christmas trees is a heartfelt tribute to those who are missed but definitely
not forgotten. We will also have a tree of lights at St Andrew’s Church in Maghull. By dedicating a light to your loved ones, you will not only be celebrating their life, you will be helping us to support our patients and their families at a time they need it most. You can dedicate a light to anyone you choose. They do not need to have been a patient at the Hospice – they could be someone who cannot be with you at this time of year who you will miss very much. That is why Light up a Life is such a special appeal as it brings people in many different situations together at a difficult time. Each name dedicated will be carefully recorded in the Book of Life, which will be available to view at the services being held at the
Hospice and at St Andrew’s Church, Maghull. You will also be able to view the Book of Life online, after our services take place or at the Hospice throughout 2018. For each light you dedicate you will receive a special card containing the name of your dedication, as it appears in the Book of Life, and you will have the opportunity to attend one of our services on 3rd December at Woodlands Hospice (4pm) or 4th December at St Andrew’s Church in Maghull (7pm). To dedicate a light to a loved one online please visit www. lightupalife4woodlands. org Alternatively please call Carole Riley on 0151 529 4143 for more information, to make a dedication over the phone by debit/credit card or to have a form posted to you.

A letter from a reader ... We received this lovely letter last month (after deadline) from one of our lucky prize draw winners.
Dear Moira (and Maria at Jungleparc) Can I please say a big thank you to you both for the lovely morning we had today at Jungleparc. This was through my mum, Mrs McDonald, winning three child tickets through The LINK competition. We went today and it was amazing – the children had a ball – the staff were so attentive and professional throughout and nothing was too much trouble. They had the patience of saints with my nervous five-year-old and
Brothers Tom (8) and Kyle (5) and – safely in their harnesses. had him doing the practice course unaided by the end of it. Thank you so, so much. It was fantastic – the kids can’t wait to take
their cousin Eliza (5) ready to go their certificates to school tomorrow. Thanks again Sally Taylor and three very happy (but shattered) kids
Dog of the month – Roger BOUNCY Roger is a fiveyear-old Labrador hound cross. He is a very playful chap, particularly when it comes to other dogs. He is well mannered with his canine chums and very tolerant of the livelier ones! He’s a friendly dog in general and happy to go out for walkies with many of the volunteers. Roger is looking for a calm household, with a family that will be patient with him, as he isn’t overly keen on being handled and can be aloof at times.
Roger doesn’t like to be left alone so will need a family with someone at home most of the day. He is a huge fan of other dogs and would benefit from living with a sociable
canine companion. Roger is a clever boy and his hound characteristics make for a very curious dog so he will need to be kept busy. If you think Roger
could be the four-legged friend you are looking for, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP. It’s open 12pm4pm every day except Wednesdays, when it is closed. Come into the garden, Maude Strange Tales – by Anton Valdemart
HOPKIN was a rogue but he knew his aspidistras from his hostas and his primroses from his pansies. The garden was his domain, a kingdom where he ruled supreme, carrying his rake like a sword of state. He led a solitary life among the greenhouses and flower beds apart from when he needed help with harvesting the vegetable patch. Mr and Mrs Browne had inherited Hopkin when they bought Windy Nook. The half-timbered villa in Mossley Hill, with spectacular views, had gardens stretching over two acres. Mrs Browne liked the twinkle in the gardener’s eyes which lit up his weather-beaten face. Hopkin enjoyed pulling people’s legs when it came to all things herbaceous, perennial or annual. He was a dab hand with cod Latin, for example. Visitors would ask the name of some obscure plant: Hopkin responded by reeling off a long Latin name made up on the spot. Those in the know thought it hilarious. Hopkin had no real interest in the world
outside his kingdom. It was 1937 and war clouds were gathering but that was of no interest to him. All he wanted was to nurture and nourish, hoe and rake throughout each carefree day. “My niece Maude is coming down from Pendle Hill and staying for a few days,” said Mr Browne. “Please show her around the garden. “She doesn’t want to get her hands dirty but she has a strong academic interest in plants and flowers.” Hopkin’s eyes lit up under his battered straw hat. This was going to be
fun. Maude was a vision of style and beauty, drawing admiring glances wherever she went. “Come into the garden, Maude,” said Mr Browne. “Hopkin will show you his specialities.” Maude was wearing a stunning outfit straight from her dressmaker’s. She shuddered when Hopkin came close and leered at her. Walking along the gravel walks, Hopkin made up a Latin name. Maude instantly pulled him up: “That is not the name for witch hazel!”
she exclaimed, steely eyes glaring. “I suppose next you’ll be telling me there are fairies at the bottom of the garden.” Hopkin clammed up. He knew he’d met his match. The next day he noticed someone had been picking herbs. A strange smell lingered, as if somebody had been boiling something in the potting shed. “I tell you I saw them,” said Mrs Browne one morning. “Two squat little men at the far end of the garden.” “I’ll tell Constable Hughes,” said Mr Browne. The officer called round later but he was accompanied by a detective and police surgeon. Hopkin lay sprawled in the shrubbery, his lifeless eyes staring at the sky. “Looks like a heart attack,” said the surgeon. “But what are these small footprints? Only children could make them.” “Or gnomes,” said the detective, a student of folklore. Maude looked down from the window, a faint smile on her lips.

A vehicle for America By Tim Saunders
Men’s first team continue their excellent form By Chris Thomas
LIVERPOOL Sefton Hockey men’s first team has continued their form from last year into the new season. It was always going to be a tough act to follow trying to beat last season’s achievements when the team won the league and gained promotion into the North League. Despite the leap in standard the team has won their first three league games. An opening day victory against Crewe Vagrants was followed by wins against Urmston and Deeside Ramblers. The 5-1 victory over Crewe was notable as it was the first competitive match played under new captain Aaron Robinson. This didn’t seem to put off the old skipper, though, as the man of the match award went to Peter Kenyon, who had stepped down after two seasons in charge. There are still some tough games and long distance away trips to come before Christmas
but the team can approach them with high hopes following such a positive start to the season. It has been a mixed start for the rest of the teams in the club. There have been highs, such as the Ladies 5’s 13-0 win against Wigan, but there have also been some disappointing defeats for all teams. A number of fixtures have also been lost to the elements, with the Ladies 3s in particular suffering bad luck with the weather. Two weeks in a row the team turned up ready to play, only for sudden downpours to make the pitch unplayable. The girls are hoping for a warm, dry winter! The start of the season isn’t all about the hockey either; September saw a very successful beer pong tournament, fancy dress was the name of the day in October for the Halloween party and everyone is now getting their special jumpers ready for the Christmas festivities!
South stay on course By Jim Stanway
DESPITE a defeat in the first round of the Northern Counties Championship, South Liverpool FC remain on course to regain the West Cheshire League first division title and to retain the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup. Two wins in the first and second rounds of the Liverpool Challenge Cup, against Liver Academy and Page Celtic, have resulted in a third round date with Liverpool County Premier League outfit Custys on November 4. A 10-0 win over lowly Liver Academy, with four goals for both Cameron Dalton and Brad Williams, was a record win in that competition while the 2-1 second round win over Page
Celtic was much closer with veterans Kevin Martin and Gary Dunning (penalty) both on the scoresheet. Two home wins in the league, against Ashville and Upton AA, have maintained a four-point lead at the top of the table. A headed winner from substitute Cameron Dalton with five minutes to go saw South squeeze past Upton AA while the team were impressive in defeating second placed Ashville 2-0 with goals from Alex Woodcock and Mason Nevitt. Since the LINK last went to print, the reserves have played only three games, all cup ties, and there has been progress in the Liverpool County FA Junior Cup with wins over FC Salle and AFC Kirkby by 3-0 and 6-2
respectively. The third round sees a trip to Aintree Villa on 11 November. The team were eliminated from the league cup on penalties by old rivals Maghull Reserves but have only suffered one league defeat all season and remain in contention for the league title with several games in hand. The youth team stride on imperiously and are an impressive 11 points clear in the West Cheshire League youth division after seven matches with seven successive wins. The team have scored 33 goals in these games with the goals being shared around the team although the leading goalscorer is Liam Murphy with eight goals.
THAT is my opinion of the fourth generation Lexus RX450h Sport. Why? It’s the type of SUV (sports utility vehicle) the Americans like, ultra luxurious inside, large and its hybrid credentials help the driver feel that they are no depleting the earth’s resources, too much anyway. Its predecessors have been extremely popular in the States, which means that this one will go down extremely well, too. It is easy to imagine it cruising the large roads over there and being very much at home. The poor British motorist can but dream of large traffic free roads or embark on their journeys during incredibly anti-social hours. This RX is certainly a striking vehicle with an expensive unique design. I am unsure of the massive black grille at the front but it is certainly striking and on opening the door of the large sonic white SUV there really is a surprise. A red interior. That feels American too. The first time you see it it very nearly takes your breath away. It’s quite dark inside until of course the £1,295 electrically operated pan roof cover retracts revealing a large glass roof, the front part of which tilts and slides. And it’s supremely comfortable too. Few cars come equipped with heated and cooled front leather seats but they’re in the Lexus. Usually on a hot summer’s day leather is sticky but that’s certainly not the case in the RX450h. And as you first acquaint yourself with it time is required to adjust to the new surroundings. It’s not just a matter of jumping in and driving off. But it doesn’t take long to understand where all the controls are located. We travel to London to visit Caroline’s uncle and the automatic gearbox makes light work of the motorway cruise allowing the driver a leisurely experience. However, if more engaging driving is required then there are paddle-shifts either side of the steering wheel and the gearbox can be driven as a manual. It makes swift progress and is a more than capable over-taker.
The sat nav is one of the more complicated on the market to operate we find. On our return journey, once we finally fathom how to use it it proceeds to take us an hour and a half from St John’s Wood to get out of the capital seemingly taking us round in circles. For some reason it wants to take us to the A3 despite us requesting the M25. Although it’s a Sunday the traffic is horrendous and Londoners are unfamiliar with patience. Pedestrians walk out in front of you, cyclists nudge past, vehicles jostle for position from your left and right. But it is nice to know that approximately up to 30mph the RX travels on electric power as long as the driver’s right foot is fairly light. The moment you push a little too heavily the 3.5-litre V6 24-valve petrol engine kicks in. The whole experience is stressful, to say the least. The only consolation is that the sheer size of the RX keeps other irate motorists in their place. It quickly becomes clear why there are so many 4x4s around the capital. Alder FC – a solid start to the season By Peter Harrison
IN their first season in the Premier Division of the Liverpool Premier League, Alder have made a solid start to their campaign. Stand-out results have seen a 2-1 away victory against East Villa, Shaun Davis netting; a 4-2 home victory against Custy’s and progression to the second round of the Challenge Cup care of a penalty victory against MSB Woolton. In the local derby, the two teams based at the club faced each other for the first time with Liverpool Nalgo the opposition. In a tight affair, Nalgo were affected by a first half injury to Anthony Holden.
ALL three Stoneycroft FC sides went goal crazy as they kicked off their respective seasons. The Combination side notched up over 30 goals in their first four fixtures, winning three by overpowering their opponents without really getting out of first gear. Unfortunately some shambolic defending proved to be their undoing when they went down to a highly competitive Kirkby side despite scoring four in a nine-goal thriller.
LEAFLET - FLYER DELIVERY We can deliver your leaflets / flyers along with The LINK through the letterboxes of up to 23,000 of homes in South Liverpool and up to 12,000 homes in West Derby and Croxteth Park every month. From just £35 + vat* per 1000. (Minimum 3,000)
The balance of play shifted to Alder after the first half hour and goals from Kyle Mulby and Peter Moore saw the team clinch victory with a 3-0 scoreline. The second round of the Challenge Cup saw the team
host Pilkington’s from the West Cheshire League. A disappointing result saw Alder take a 2-0 lead but a disastrous spell of conceding three goals within 10 minutes led to an eventual 5-3 defeat and elimination from the cup.
However, the team currently lie fourth in the league with one defeat from seven games so have made a promising start. Pictured above is action from the game with Pilkington’s with Alder, in the royal blue shirts, on the attack.
‘Croft sides begin season with a bang By Mick Titherington
To advertise see page FOUR
Going forward this side looks the business, creating chances at will almost every time they attack. Chances have to be taken though as in the Northern game when they hit fourteen past the luckless visitors. Sadly that was not the case at Kirkby when chances went begging and with a leaky defence they were made to pay the price. Manager Paddy McBride saw this game as a glitch and is confident that they won’t suffer
many more losses as he addresses the problems at the back. Croft got back to winning ways putting another four past Jaguar Rovers, who could only manage two in reply. The Under-17 side are in similar rampant mood and remain unbeaten by ratcheting up a goal tally that the other sides can only envy. In their latest encounter against Kaalmo they went into the break 1-0 down only to strike back in breathtaking style with six
second half goals. They are certainly fulfilling their promise and pre-season predictions of honours look to be on the money. The Vets have had a stop-start season so far with the weather interrupting their programme. In the games played they have had mixed fortunes, but have given a good account of themselves and the expectation is that results will follow. In a closely fought encounter they lost out to a competent REMYCA side 3-1.
