THE First World War had been raging for nine months but life was little affected at home, away from the bloodbath of the trenches in France. It was May 1915 and the UHDOLWLHV RI FRQĂ LFW ZHUH EHLQJ brought home to increasing numbers of people. On 7 May the luxury liner Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine as she headed for Liverpool. As battles raged, Britain was counting the cost of the war – ÂŁ2.1 million a day. Politician David Lloyd George described Britain’s three main enemies as “Germany, Austria and Drinkâ€?. In those days this usually meant seaside trips or long walks. An unsigned postcard, showing West Derby Courthouse in the Village, commemorates the Bank Holiday which was memorable for the correspondent. They may have bought the card at the shop and tea rooms to the left of the Courthouse, which held its last sitting in 1910. . In those days vans were

‘West Derby LINK – Part of your community’ Hello Everyone Welcome to the August issue of the LINK. Where’s the time going?! Well, as I write this the weather forecast is looking good so hopefully we are in for some nice weather for the kids’ school hols. For many of us, this time of year means only one thing…..holidays! So, we would like to wish you all a happy holiday if you are going away. We have a fantastic free prize draw in this month’s LINK for tickets for days out at Jungle Parc in Croxteth Country Park. Jungle Parc is an amazing high ropes course with over 60 different activities. So read the article and enter now. You’ve got to be in it to win it! August is a bit on the quiet side for many businesses so it’s a great opportunity again (I asked you last August too) for me to ask you, the advertisers and readers, to help me out. I want to know what you want to see in the LINK. We get the most fantastic
and positive comments about The LINK and I am always looking for ways to improve it for you and I really do listen to our readers and advertisers. What you would like to see in The LINK? PLEASE DO BEAR IN MIND, THOUGH, THAT THE LINK IS A COMMUNITY ADVERTISING PAPER AND NOT A NEWSPAPER! THE LINK RELIES 100% ON ADVERTISING REVENUE. So we don’t carry news as such and certainly not bad news. We do love nice little local stories and articles of interest though. The LINK goes through the doors of thousands of homes in the South Liverpool and West Derby areas and of course into supermarkets, businesses, libraries, businesses too numerous to mention, etc etc, and as you will appreciate distribution through doors and in supermarkets is very expensive. So edit space is quite limited. I WOULD LOVE YOUR COMMENTS PLEASE.
Please email me with the subject COMMENTS on liverpoollink@ yahoo.co.uk or post to Comments, Liverpool LINK, P.O.Box 170, Liverpool, L25 7WL. Moira Hesketh, Thank you to editor all those of you who stop us in the street when we are dropping The LINK off at local businesses and tell us how much you enjoy The LINK. It means so much. Thank you. If you are an advertiser, we hate to mention it so early but Christmas advertising campaigns are already being booked! Book your space now! Thank you all for supporting The LINK See you next month! Moira, Dawn, Carol and Colette
What our advertisers are saying about us ... Dear Moira, I just wanted to let you know how happy I am with the service provided by The LINK and with you in particular, in the account handling of my business advertising. Your service from start to finish has been exemplary and on a professional, knowledgeable, yet friendly level that far exceeds all other advertising agencies I have dealt with. Nothing ever seems to be too much trouble to you and I am made to feel unique, never feeling that I am just one of many clients that you have to deal with each day. It is so refreshing to receive a prompt I have advertised in the LINK for 9 years and I would be lost without it now!!! “I have been using the South Liverpool Link for advertising for the past year and a half. I have found it to be the most effective and cost effective print marketing in the area. Particularly useful as it is delivered through my target market’s letterboxes as well as being available at local businesses. I track success by the number of mentions I get and new customers advertising brings in and The Link is the only print marketing I now do. Prices are good and the service from Moira and the team at the Link is excellent. Would recommend”. August’s dog of the month – Gigga GIGGA LV D ORYHO\ ÀYH \HDU ROG Greyhound who’s racing career is far behind him now. All Gigga wants these days is a comfy duvet and a decent diet. Add a refreshing touch to your next meal with this lemon sorbet recipe THIS easy-to-make, refreshing lemon sorbet (called sorbetto al limone in Italian) comes from our chefs in Italy at their cookery school in Sorrento. It’s the perfect way to use summery citrus as part of your next meal. What you’ll need: Q 200g sugar. Q Three unwaxed, juicy lemons. Q 500ml water. Q 50ml grappa or vodka. Because of the addition of grappa or vodka, this is an adults-only recipe, which makes it great for book clubs, girls’ nights in, or any summer meal with friends. This recipe serves four people, so make sure you have enough if you plan to prepare it for more. To begin, combine the water, sugar, and the zest of one of the lemons in a saucepan. Bring this to a medium heat, constantly stirring until you have cooked it down into a syrup. Then, let it cool and discard the zest by straining the mixture so you are left with a smooth syrup. While it cools, juice the three lemons. Add the juice of the lemons and the grappa or vodka to the cooled syrup. Once this has been completed, put the
sorbet in the freezer for 10 minutes and serve cold, with mint or lemon zest as garnish.
This sorbet is best madeto-order and fresh. You can, however, prepare it early and leave the mixture in the freezer. An emotional rollercoaster with my baby Daisy May LIFE ‘n’ STYLE – with JADE AINSWORTH www.jadeainsworth gossip.co.uk HI GUYS and welcome to my August edition of Life ’n’ Style. The past couple of weeks have been like an emotional roller coaster for me. If you know me you will know how much my dog Daisy May means to me. She’s not just a dog, she’s my baby. If you watched me on First Dates you will have seen how I talk about her being my spooning partner – we do everything together. Well, about two weeks ago I was out for my mum’s birthday and Daisy May was staying at my nan’s when my nan called and said Daisy wasn’t herself but I just presumed it was because she was missing me as she gets like that.
A couple of days later I took her to the groomers and the lady who looks after her called me and said her gums were pale and to take her to the vet straight away. They ran some bloods and it turns out she’s anaemic and, with dogs, it means there is an underlying issue that is quite serious and detrimental to the dog’s health so I have been heartbroken. I have been off work taking her for multiple tests and we’re still no further on. Not knowing if it’s something she’s had long term or something that’s affected her suddenly is eating me up inside. I still don’t know the reason behind it and just hope when I write my piece
