WATER 0N TAP By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society IT IS essential to life but most of us probably don’t give water a second thought as we go about our everyday lives. Due largely to our Victorian ancestors, clean water is available everywhere thanks to reservoirs and efficient piping systems which have been improved over the decades. As a result water is very cheap but not exactly free as every householder and business person knows when their utility bills arrive. Many people today have an aversion to tap water. Millions are prepared to regularly buy bottled water in plastic bottles harmful to the environment when not recycled. We are fortunate to have such plentiful supplies but in many parts of the world water is scarce. Drought adds to the problems of places where, even at the best of times, water is difficult to obtain. Until comparatively modern times, clean water was at a premium, particularly in towns and cities. Centuries ago the main source of water for Liverpool’s tiny population was the Fall Well off Lime Street. Later water carts trundled around the town to supply the growing population. As clean water was scarce, many people – particularly working men – turned to cheap beer for refreshment.

A Tuebrook resident was to introduce a simple amenity which benefitted countless numbers – the public drinking fountain. Charles Melly was born in what was then a country district in 1829. His father Andre was Swiss and his mother Margaret came from an old Cheshire family. Charles did not invent drinking fountains but was inspired by those he saw on a visit to Geneva, where his father was born, in 1852. Piped water was available in Liverpool at this time but, like now, had to be paid for. Most working class people did not have piped water in their homes. They usually obtained it from a

communal tap or pump. The public had no access to water on the streets but there were horse troughs. People had no alternative but to go to public houses – and some drank from the horse troughs. Charles decided to introduce free wall-mounted public fountains in Liverpool at his own expense. Each had a similar design featuring red granite. An Edwardian postcard (pictured) shows a surviving Melly fountain outside St Anne’s church in Prescot Road. n Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday April 18 at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

Obituary: Sir Ken Dodd

By Moira Hesketh

The runners who took part in the 2017 Santa Dash through Liverpool have raised a huge £15,000 for Claire House Children’s Hospice. Around 120 runners, kitted out in red or blue Santa outfits, took part in the 14th festive themed 5k run. Claire House helps over 400 families across Merseyside – with the charity having recently opened a second centre in West Derby in January 2018. It offers day care services including counselling and complementary therapies.

WE at the LINK were deeply saddened, like most people, by the recent death of Sir Ken Dodd. We met Sir Ken at various charity and social functions on numerous occasions in recent years and were always struck by his humility, charity and compassion as much, of course, as by his unique and infectious humour. Peter and I saw him perform at the Philharmonic in December 2016, the day before his knighthood was announced; he was in true hilarious Doddy form and had us all in stitches from start to finish. It felt an honour and privilege to see his ‘Happiness’ show at the time and it feels even more so now. His knighthood was of course richly deserved and long overdue and his sad passing marks the end of an era both here in Liverpool and in British comedy. A true legend. We would like to express our sincerest condolences to Sir Ken’s widow, Lady Anne, and to his family and many friends. Our thoughts are with you at this time and our memories will be with us forever.

It will also help reduce the number of people unnecessarily delayed in hospital following NHS treatment. They are due to open in the north, south and central areas of the city by 2020.

The thing is that the Club tell me that the vast majority of ticket buyers said that they saw the article in South Liverpool LINK. Thank you Paul

It is as it is THE castle made its final stand after centuries dominating the town – the grim fortress resisted to the last those who brought its stones tumbling to earth. It was 1721 and gangs of workers were struggling to demolish the ancient but formidable walls. Where pickaxes and sledge hammers failed, gunpowder was used to shift the remains of towers and ramparts. Finally Liverpool Castle was reduced to a vast pile of masonry that had to be moved by horse and cart. The discovery was made at the base of the west tower where Adam Almond led a gang of workers shifting rocks and masonry. They came across a pile of rubble beneath a spiral staircase. Moving the debris of stones and mortar was very difficult and they toiled for several hours. At last a hidden door was revealed, covered with metal studs and secured with large iron bars and an ornate lock. Above the door, carved into the stone lintel, were the mysterious words: It is as it is. Adam was puzzled and none of the others could decipher the meaning of the enigmatic words. “My old teacher will know – he’s a great scholar,” said Adam. They decided to leave the door

until Maximus Temple had arrived from Walton Grammar School. He took one look at the archaic inscription and pronounced: “That is the personal motto of Edward III who died in 1377.” Maximus ordered that the door be left untouched until the mayor and town clerk were summoned as witnesses. Soon there was a large crowd surrounding the door. Maximus pointed to each word of the inscription with his cane: “Some think it is a message meaning things are as they are and cannot be changed,“ he said. “It could refer to Edward’s claim to the French throne. “However, I have another theory – it’s about Edward’s father, Edward II, who was given an elaborate funeral at Gloucester Cathedral. “He was a weak king, lazy and incompetent, who indulged worthless favourites. “History records that Edward II was murdered. “There are those, like me, who believe the deposed king was spirited away from prison and lived in secret exile. “Edward III knew where his father was and visited him.” “Break the door down,” said a gruff voice from the crowd. “There might be treasure in there.”

Several armed militiamen stood guard as the door was forced open. Everyone stepped back as a gust of musty air rushed out of the hidden chamber. They peered inside. Mouldering red banners hung from the ceiling, each embroidered

with the words It is as it is in gold letters. Everywhere lay piles of colourful medieval clothing including tunics and hoods. As they watched, the mass of fabric crumbled to dust when the fresh air circulated.

A skeleton lay on a rock shelf. Looking around the sombre grotto Maximus declared: “There is no treasure here but the bones of a king.” n Read my next Strange Tale – Mirror, Mirror on the Wall - in the May Link.

PRIMARY school children have been planting 1,000 trees in a bid to make Liverpool greener for future generations. Pupils from Florence Melly, Leamington Road, Northcote and Rice Lane schools planted the young trees on Walton Hall Park. They were supported by Liverpool City Council’s Parks and Green Spaces team as well as The Friends of Walton Hall Park. It’s part of The One Tree Per Child Scheme with The Mersey Forest which will ensure every 10 year-old child in the city plants their own tree. The aim is for 10,000 new trees to be planted by 2020.

Hillsborough sculpture set to move to John Lennon Airport

AN art sculpture commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster in 2014 has been unveiled in its new home at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The Band of Life has 96 lights, each representing a person who died, with illumination symbolising a commitment to continue to bring light to their life. It has been in the atrium at the Liverpool Echo building on Old Hall Street for the last three years.

Dog of the month – Penny PENNY is a five-year-old Doberman Cross. She is very playful and loves to chase her carers around the off lead area. She’s looking for a loving family that will give her time to settle in to their routine, and not rush her. She is a little worried about being handled too much, so patience is key whilst she builds her confidence in her new home. Penny gets along well with other dogs but would be best as the only one in the home. Penny is allergic to beef and pork, so needs to be fed carefully. If Penny could be your four-legged friend, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP, 12pm-4pm every day except Wednesdays, when it is closed. You can also call on 0300 303 0292, 8am-8pm Mon-Fri and 9am-5pm Sat and Sun. www.dogstrust.org.uk.

THE next film that the internationally acclaimed Oscar winning movie star Jim Broadbent will appear in is ‘Night in Hatton Garden’, due for release this year. The 6’2” star is thought to be playing 75-year-old John Collins, who acted as a lookout for the gang who stole £25m of jewellery in the audacious 2015 robbery. The working title production, directed by James Marsh, also stars other celebrities including Michael Caine, Ray Winstone and Paul Whitehouse. Clad in high-viz jacket and hard hat, Jim acts as lookout while the gang drill through the vault that holds millions of pounds worth of jewels. To make this particular scene as convincing and realistic as possible it was filmed at night and on location outside the Hatton Garden safe deposit box where the original robbery took place. Many passers-by believed them to be attempting a second heist in the area. “I did a real double take when I saw them there in the middle of Hatton Garden” an onlooker told the Daily Mirror

newspaper. “They looked like the men we saw in CCTV images of the robbery”. A seventh thief, known only as Basil, has never been found, while £10m worth of the gems is believed to still be missing. The criminals were inspired by experiences from two crimes – the infamous £26million Brink’s Mat robbery at Heathrow Airport and the £6million Security Express cash robbery in London. Both took place in 1983. An actor for more

than four decades, Jim Broadbent has rarely been off our screens since his first foray into the world of films in 1971 with an uncredited role as a spectator at a cricket match. He graduated from drama school a year later. Although both his parents were sculptors they were also keen amateur actors and clearly theirs was a positive influence. In fact, The Broadbent Theatre in Wickenby, a converted Lincolnshire church, with its regular

schedule of productions, is named after his dad, Roy, who died when Jim was 22. Jim is the theatre’s honorary president. “I’ve always been deliberately open to new experiences” he told the Daily Telegraph. This appetite for a challenge has seen him enjoy a plethora of different roles throughout his 45 year career including taking to the stage in ‘The Government Inspector’ at the Royal National Theatre. In the 1980s he was

News stories wanted

Barbara Green’s entry to the “Food” Competition at South Liverpool Photographic Society. The idea for this photo was hatched in London as Barbara undertook her regular granny sitting duties. This photo was going to be tricky to take as Barbara wanted to utilise natural light, ie daytime. Her grandchildren helped make the jelly, which by evening had set perfectly. However .... no way would they wait until the next day so helped themselves!!! With no time remaining to re-create the scene before returning to Liverpool the family “demolished” their creation! Here’s the final attempt with grateful help of a neighbour’s child Amber G Smith! Natural light controlled only by lowering the window blind.

We are looking for news briefs of not more than 100 words for events etc organised by community groups, charities etc subject to available space. Please email to liverpoollink@ yahoo.co.uk

South remain in pole position By Jim Stanway

DESPITE the recent very poor weather South Liverpool FC have actually managed to play some football! A draw with third-placed Neston Nomads on their artificial pitch via a Gary Dunning penalty when the worst of the cold snap had created a whiteout across the country kept their rivals at arms length. A late winner by Cameron Dalton against relegation threatened West Kirby was a welcome three points while an excellent second half with an own goal and a Jimmy Eves header put paid to title rivals Mossley Hill with a 2-1 win. Ioniq has changed my opinion of hybrids

UNTIL I drove the Hyundai Ioniq my experience of hybrids was that they were dull, inefficient and slow. My opinion has changed! During a week-long test I drive the Ioniq to London and Chichester as well as pottering about locally. And not once do I break into a sweat fretting about where the nearest petrol station can be found. For those unfamiliar with hybrids they couple a petrol engine to an electric motor. The electric motor kicks in at low speeds making them more environmentally friendly than petrol or diesel vehicles. The electric motor is charged when the petrol engine is running. A very light right foot and speeds typically of 30mph and under generally results in electric mode (EV) being engaged. However, there are occasions when EV mode fails to kick in and there is no rhyme nor reason why. One such occasion is in heavy traffic in the capital when we all slow down to a crawl yet we are still running on petrol. This really shouldn’t be the case and is frustrating. Even when reversing off the driveway it is the petrol engine that is called on most of the time. Yet when I shoot my video, as you can see at www.testdrives.biz, EV mode is engaged while I reverse. There is a push button

start and the driver must remember to unlock the foot operated parking brake, which takes a little getting used to. Despite the Ioniq’s reliance on its petrol engine it is surprisingly economical and can be driven at a good speed on the motorway without the worry that the fuel reserves are rapidly depleting. It will easily travel over 550 miles on a full tank of petrol. Two years ago I drove both the Nissan and Toyota equivalents and this was never the case for me then – the driver was lucky to achieve 300 miles on a full tank. And the Toyota Prius is fitted with a 45 litre fuel tank just like the Hyundai Ioniq. However, the Prius is a 1.8-litre petrol compared to the Hyundai’s 1.6-litre unit. At the traffic lights the Ioniq swiftly pulls away. Glancing at reviews of this car I am surprised that I cannot find a single complimentary one. They all complain about lack of speed and a general lacklustre

appeal. My experience is an utter contrast. I find the design interesting and it is a well-constructed fivedoor hatchback. It’s ideal family transport, easily accommodating three car seats in the back. My only qualm is that the seat belt buckles in the rear fall too low into the seats making it really difficult to insert or remove a seatbelt when there are three children’s car seats in place. But there is luxury; even the rear occupants enjoy heated seats while the driver gets a heated steering wheel and even an air heated/ cooled seat, as does their passenger. Overall, the Ioniq is a welcome addition to the hybrid line up and it surpasses expectations, setting a new standard. Croft book final spot after close encounter By Mick Titherington

WITH the weather continuing to disrupt fixtures the stop-start season has made it difficult to establish any sort of real continuity but this has not prevented the Maiden Lane crew reaching the final of the I Zingari Challenge Cup. Progress through the ties included another 16 goal rout of the unfortunate FC Northern who must be getting sick of the sight of their opponents. Kennedy was joined by Kelly with five goals apiece in a onesided affair.

The semi-final presented much more of a challenge when missed chances by the Stoneycroft strikers led to a much harder workout than anticipated. In the end goals from Daley and Ledson saw them edge through to book themselves a place in the Final. The Final will be played in April at the Liverpool County FA ground at Walton Hall Park where Runcorn will be their opponents. The Youth team suffered a set-back with their first defeat of the season followed by a thrilling 3-3 draw with close rivals Whiston Juniors and the

chase for the title is now, despite the weather, hotting up. Club’s history being put into words Stoneycroft FC are now in their 107th year of existence and Ian Duncan, from the club, is writing a book chronicling the club’s history. As part of his research he is seeking contributions from past players, officials and supporters who are prepared to share their recollections of their time with the club. If you have anything then Ian would be delighted to hear from you and can be contacted at bigdunc@gmail.com

Alder FC’s League progress continues By Peter Harrison

AGAIN despite poor weather, including a game snowed off in mid-March, the team has been able to complete three league fixtures since last month. A solid 4-1 home victory against South Sefton saw Paul Halliday net his first goal of the season. There then followed

a disappointing 3-2 home defeat to MSB Woolton in arctic temperatures. Having taken a twogoal lead, with Lee Treble netting a rare goal, the second half saw an out of sorts performance littered with misplaced passes. Credit to Woolton though for a spirited come back. The final month’s fixture

The past two games have typified the best performances of Sefton Men’s third team this season. A tough away game against Bangor University, facing a younger and fitter opposition, drew out the class and experience of the 3s to clinch a 2-1 away victory. The most recent fixture showed the heart and desire that has pushed the team forward this season, going from 2-0 down within 10 minutes to 2-1 at half time and finishing with the 3s running out deserved 4-2 winners.

saw the team bounce back with a great 5-3 away victory against Custys. Regular marksman Kyle Mulby scored a great effort for his 15th of the season, with Alex Gofton joining in with a brace to take his season’s tally to eight and Mick Roberts scoring what the manager has described as a “worldy.”
