Clubmoor pupil gets highest grades LIVERPOOL schoolboy Alex Polewski exceeded all expectations in music by winning a place this year at Manchester’s Chethams School of Music. He is now one of a few Liverpool pupils who have achieved this prestigious accolade. Alex showed a gifted talent for piano at an early age and with a private tutor he quickly absorbed music until at 10 years old, he could play practically anything – Bach, Chopin, Strauss and even the Beatles! His talents were quickly spotted by the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral where, as organist, his fantastic keyboard skills can be heard. Sadly, this talent was not discovered by his mainstream school until a Y6 talent assembly brought him to the forefront. It was here that he wowed not only his teachers and classmates too. Today, Alex plays at his Polish Supplementary school in Old Swan, most Saturdays, as he is still learning to perfect his heritage Polish language skills. We are all glad now that Alex is developing his musical skills at a higher level but disappointed that his talent was not discovered earlier. Liverpool Cultural Champion Andre Olchowski said: “So many of our talented pupils in Liverpool are missing out in schools
on the arts curriculum because of a lack of funding. Schools are putting too much emphasis on Numeracy and Literacy which are important but there needs to be a balance. “How many more pupils like Alex are there in Liverpool schools who have a gift for music and the arts and it’s not being catered for?”

Life cycles By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society
THE invention of the bicycle changed lives of countless people across the world, giving them the ability to travel at virtually no cost once they acquired a machine. Bicycles had the advantage of needing little maintenance compared to horses, carriages and cars. Cyclists needed to be fit and confident while bad weather could also be a drawback. There was a freedom unknown to previous generations coupled with improved health and wellbeing. The earliest modern bicycle appeared in Paris in 1791, reflecting the spirit of equality embraced by the French Revolution which was raging. However, there are images of similar contraptions long before this date. All were propelled by riders pushing along with ground with
their feet. An improved but similar machine called the hobby-horse was produced in London from 1818. Riders needed to be strong and fit to move over poor roads and the craze was over by 1830. Something better had to be found. A Scottish village blacksmith called Kirkpatrick Macmillan came up with a solution in 1839 when he invented the first practical pedal-driven two-wheeled bicycle. Macmillan did not take out any patents and his design was soon copied. Machines such as the penny farthing were driven by pedals directly powering the front wheel. Cycling was transformed in the 1870s by the advent of the bicycle chain powering the rear wheel. The modern safety bicycle had arrived and continues to develop. In 1963 a cyclist (pictured above) heads down Barnfield Drive, signalling to turn right into
Eaton Rd. A Ford Popular travels towards Queens Drive while a Ford Consul is parked at the kerb. A van – possibly a green Post Office Telephones Morris – is behind the cyclist. This photograph was taken shortly after Barnfield Drive was extended from Eaton Rd to Mill Lane and flats built overlooking the playing fields. In the background is a late Georgian house called Holly Mount, once a home of the wellknown Arkle family.
In the 1960s Holly Mount was shared by vet Ernest Shallcross, who had been there since 1939, and the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance along with a branch of the National Assistance Board. Holly Mount was demolished in 1972 - the site is now occupied by a small estate with the same name. n Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday 16 January at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

The bins are back in town LIVERPOOL’S bins have had a major make-over. More than 100 new larger street litter bins have been placed in the city’s parks along with a further 100 new bins to follow in residential areas in communities across the city. These new bins are three times the size of their older counterparts and are much sturdier. They include a special cabinet on
the side that allows the various ‘friends groups’ that work in the parks to store bags, litter pickers, gloves and other items. While on the streets some older litter bins have been refurbished, repainted and re-used or replaced with new ones if they were beyond repair. So far the council has installed a total of 300 new bins across the city and there’s more to come.

HARRIET and Hermione shared a secret world created to liven up otherwise claustrophobic surroundings dominated by their battle-weary father. General Elphinstone was a veteran of several colonial wars spread across the globe as he served Queen Victoria’s colours trying to resolve conflicts in strange lands. The grizzled old warrior hung up his uniform and married 23-year-old Lady Elspeth Mainwaring in a simple ceremony at the village church. Harriet arrived within a year and four years later Hermione was screaming her head off in the old family cradle. “She has very healthy lungs,” said Mrs Craddock, the nanny at Lubbock House who helped raise Elspeth and now her daughters. “This one will certainly make her presence felt, mark my words.” The General’s glowering persona enveloped the dreary house from his huge portrait on the stairs to a marble bust in the
entrance hall. The sisters knew him as little more than a distant figure, hunched over his books in the library or stiffly walking across the lawns surrounding the ivy-covered house. Elspeth, being so much younger than her husband, was far more active. She enjoyed the local hunt and mountaineering holidays in Switzerland. “You must excuse your father,” she told the girls. “He suffers a lot of pain due to war wounds but never complains.” As a result, Harriet and Hermione’s make-believe world

took on a reality which excluded their parents. However, their 19-year-old governess Eliza Penny was welcomed into the secret world – the trio had an air of conspiracy about them. The sisters wrote peculiar stories enriched by Eliza’s ideas. All inhabited a world occupied by elves, gnomes and fairies in fern-covered glades by bubbling streams. Harriet was 16 when she discovered her talent as a sculptress. It was one of the coldest winters on record, when everything froze and the eaves of Lubbock House were festooned with long shimmering icicles. Hermione and Eliza were astonished when they looked out over the snow-covered lawn one morning. Harriet stood leaning proudly on a huge spade beside two lifesized icy figures. “These are the Lubbock Lovers,” she announced. The quality of the effigies created out of pure snow and
ice was remarkable. They wore white fur hats, boots, coats, huge mittens and comforting scarves. The man reached out to the woman, as if to embrace her in his icy arms. “They haven’t even kissed,” Harriet said confidingly as she accompanied Hemione and Eliza through the snow back to the house. That night there was a full moon and Hermione could not sleep. She crept to the window and breathed on the glass to melt the jack frost. The Lubbock Lovers were clearly visible in the moonlight. Hermione gasped – the icy couple were in a passionate embrace, lips pressed together and steam rising in the night air. “I can’t explain it,” said Jethro the gardener the following morning. “There’s a big pool of hot water where those ‘ere snow people were.” n Read my next Strange Tale – Graduation Day - in the February Link.

Hyundai i30 surprises at every turn By Tim Saunders
WHEN the Hyundai i30 is delivered I am pleasantly surprised. I had been expecting a plain and functional five door hatchback. But instead I am looking at the Fastback, a much more exciting proposition. Its sleek lines make it a vehicle to admire from the design perspective. The striking front is impressive if similar to a growing number of cars these days. The rear has hints of Mercedes about it… and Aston Martin without the hefty price tags. The i30 Fastback clearly has a talented designer. The result should be a Lexus beating sports saloon that is very pleasing on the eye and really does create a double take especially for those who have previously ignored the virtues of a Hyundai. This family car surprises at every turn and probably the biggest achievement is the fact that it is powered by a tiddly little one-litre petrol engine, which promises low emissions. Through
turbo charging, the engineers have cleverly squeezed almost 120bhp out of it, giving more oomph than much bigger engined vehicles. Another great feature is the satellite navigation system which is one of the easiest to operate. Simply punch in a postcode and it will reliably take you to your destination. Unlike some set-ups it will allow a postcode to be entered without any spaces, which makes life easier. Build quality seems a little on the flimsy side, though. For instance, when shutting one of the rear doors there is still a fair amount of give after it is closed.
While I’m on this subject I notice that the paint finish isn’t as sharp as it should be around the boot rubber. My biggest gripe though is the positioning of the three seatbelt points in the rear. Bear in mind that I am the owner of an ageing Ford Fiesta and I regularly travel with three cumbersome car seats in the back without a problem. Therefore, I do not anticipate any problems in fitting the same three car seats in more modern vehicles. The Hyundai is a considerably larger car. But oh dear oh dear. The positioning of the belt buckle slots means that I must have wasted
over an hour of my time during the course of the test fiddling around fitting the car seats for my two daughters. Because Henry’s is a slightly wider Cosatto seat it covers both slots for Harriett’s and Heidi car seats. I dread every time we all return to the car because I know that my fingers are really going to hurt as I have to forcibly lift Henry’s seat up to make allow for Harriett and Heidi to be strapped in. I have had some problems with other new cars but never to this extent. This really does need improving. Aside from this, the boot is large enough for the family’s luggage and there is a good amount of storage space. n Facts at a glance Hyundai i30 Premium 1.0 T-GDi 120PS Price: From £20,310 Top speed: 117mph 0-60mph: 11.1secs Power: 118bhp Economy: 54mpg Watch the videos at www. testdrives.biz

CELEBRITY ARTICLE
Celebrity article – Robert Webb By Tim Saunders
COMEDIAN Robert Webb was born in 1972. A Channel 4 favourite, he stars alongside David Mitchell in Mitchell & Webb, in the Sony award-winning That Mitchell & Webb Sound and the Bafta award-winning That Mitchell & Webb Look. He is Jeremy in Peep Show. He grew up in Lincolnshire and according to him in his autobiography ‘How Not To Be A Boy’, published by Canongate, Lincolnshire “is a large and largely ignored county on the east coast of England, sufficiently far north to be considered Northern but somehow not Professionally Northern in the manner of, say, Yorkshire or Tyneside”. From where he grew up, it took about an hour to get to a major road, the A1 – “also known as ‘the Lincolnshire bypass’ – and it’s this sense of isolation that gives the place some of its character and beauty, as well as some of its problems”. Robert was born, to parents Paul and Pat (she hated Patricia), 10 months after the death of his eldest brother Martin (6) from meningitis and also had two older brothers, Mark and Andrew. His first home was a house called Slieve Moyne in the village of Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire. The house was fitted with double glazing “to
make up for the familiar scream of Tornados” because they lived “next door” to RAF Coningsby. “In later years I would think of the place as Tatooine, the planet Luke Skywalker imagines to be furthest from the bright centre of the universe. But for now it was the universe and one with which I was perfectly content. There was just one problem. When we first meet Luke on Tatooine, he has an issue with his mysteriously absent father. My father, on the other hand, was all too present. And his name might as well have been Darth Vader. “When people saw Dad walking down the
street in Woodhall Spa, they did not think: ‘Ah there goes Paul Webb, a walking powderkeg of repressed grief.’ Paul’s public face was beloved by more or less the entire village. Generous with his time, charismatic, cheeky, cajoling and straightforwardly kind, he didn’t so much live in that village as host it. He would walk into a pub and I would watch the whole room subtly adjust itself in his direction and settle itself in for a treat. They adored him. But then they didn’t have to live with him. Mum did.” Robert’s mum was “a working class woman who was certainly clever, but not clever enough to avoid getting knocked up before finishing her A-levels”. He recalls how she always had a part-time job as a school secretary, a hotel secretary or a bar-worker. Growing up, adults referred to Robert as painfully shy and quiet. His sense of humour gradually developed. He says: “Growing up, I was given the impression that Woodhall was one of the ‘nicer’ villages in the area. Certainly the Conservative Club, the Golf Club, the Tea House in the Woods and the Dower House Hotel – a stately procession of mock-Tudor buildings with horse-brassy fireplaces – lend the place an impregnable air of Tory respectability.”

Look up! And get more space at home for under £345 WE’D all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise is
based in Liverpool and is run by skilled local Mark Pennington who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Mark. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. “For just £297 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. “We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Mark provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! AROUND this time of the year some of us will review the year we’ve had. This can highlight some great things that have happened to us or some negative things. Certainly Christmas and New Year can be an emotional time….. Whilst my quest for you is to have a positive life and help guide you through your ups and downs, I have put together some points here that I hope will highlight some positive experiences you have had this year, as well as trying to help take you forward. Use a piece of paper or your phone to help take some notes. Your accomplishments: What did you do, what did you overcome, what did you achieve? What did you learn? We can all be hit with some tough situations and it’s important for our wellbeing that we try and take some positives from those

Taking the New Year by storm and working through my life plan HEY guys and welcome to my first Life ‘n’ Style of 2019. Hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and I hope 2019 brings you all health, wealth and happiness. I have had a lovely few weeks but I am ready to take 2019 by storm and start working through my life plan. Last week my mum held her annual Christmas BezzyBuddies lunch at the Hilton in Liverpool. It was such a gorgeous day. There was champagne flowing throughout and an afternoon jam packed with entertainment. After a few glasses of wine I had my arm twisted to take to the stage to perform the Spice Girls. At first I wanted the ground to eat me up because even though I probably appear to be really confident I’m actually quite shy but I just told myself it was all for a good cause and anything to do with charity work I’m all in. If you haven’t yet heard of Bezzybuddies or you are new to reading my column it is an events company that my mum started up five years ago and is focused on bringing together like-minded people who all enjoy socialising, getting together and having a fabulous time. My mum started off with about 10 Bezzybuddies and now has over 1000 people joined on the website. Each week she puts on an event whether it be a shopping trip, a night
on the town, wine tasting, weekends away or holidays. You name it there is something for everyone no matter what your age or lifestyle enjoyments. I had loads of lovely comments from the Leopard Jumpsuit I wore with people asking where it was from. Ku Spendlove made it for me. All my friends call me the jumpsuit queen but not only are they a complete outfit in one they are also really flattering and because Ku Spendlove makes everything to perfectly fit you and will work with you on the design no two outfits are ever the same so you don’t have to worry about somebody having the same outfit on as you. Now if I’m not going to wear a jumpsuit then next in line is a little co-ord. I went on a little date night with my guy to Bar & Grill and wore this little number from PrettyLittleThing. Grey Snake Faux Leather Bralet (£10) and Grey Snake Faux Leather Flared Trousers (£22). (Faux) animal is a big thing this season

so it’s worth jumping on the trend as you can wear them all over or mix and match with some plainer items to dress them down. This week I have been doing a bit of filming for the BBC at the Shankly Hotel in Liverpool. The programme is based on the fabulous hotel and I was lucky enough to be the first person to stay in the new Jungle Room. This room is different from any other. Can’t wait for you all to see it. While filming I wore two sparkly numbers – another fabulous Ku Spendlove jumpsuit creation and a Tom Ford Molly dress from @ oneroseboutique on Instagram.

Dog of the month – Max DOG BREED: Crossbreed DOG AGE: 14 Max is a sweet, gentle older boy who would make a wonderful companion for someone. He absolutely loves being around people and can be very snuggly. He’s also quite playful, despite his advancing years, and still loves to bring you a toy to play with. Max would like a home with
no other pets, but he is fine with children aged about 10 and above. He is house trained, and would like a home with someone who is there for most of the day. n Dogs Trust Merseyside – Call on 0300 303 0292 8am8pm Mon-Fri (closed Wed) and 9am-5pm Sat and Sun www.dogstrust.org.uk
Tips for your pets EVERYBODY over indulges during the Christmas period – even our beloved pets!! January is always a good time to review our lifestyle so don’t forget the furry friends we have!! Exercise – a healthy amount of exercise is needed for our dogs so appropriate walks are a must. Great for socialising too. For cats, just encouraging them to play can help burn off calories. Treat – we all love a treat or two but there are so many
hidden calories in treats that the weight can soon begin to pile on. Choose healthy options such as carrots. Food – furry coats keep our pets warm so a winter layer is a myth…..let the fur keep them warm not the fat! We run FREE weight management clinics at our practice – one of our friendly Nurses will support you in healthy living for your pets! Call us for more information on 0151 556 4526.

Liverpol Sefton hockey – mid-season round up
By Jen Ratcliffe South Res in red in their recent away game at West Kirby, Neil Roach captain in front.
Puskas unveiling at South Parkway By Jim Stanway
A SPECIAL presentation took place at the South Liverpool Parkway bus and railway station recently. The station was previously the site of South Liverpool FC’s ground at Holly Park. On a special night in May 1967 over 10,000 football fans packed into the ground to witness one of the greatest footballers of all time, Hungarian international Ferenc Puskas, play a charity match in aid of the local children’s charity Bankfield House. 51 years later the Hungarian community in Liverpool, led by Dr Andrew Zsigmond, arranged for the famous night to be commemorated with a plaque now positioned at the station next to Costa Coffee! Bearing in mind that Puskas is the most famous Hungarian of all time there was a very significant presence at the unveiling. The Mayor of Budapest and the Hungarian Ambassador to the UK were both present as well as the Hungarian consul in Liverpool and Granada Reports!! Liverpool FC legend Ian Callaghan was also in attendance, as was well-known local football writer John Keith. South Liverpool’s first team have struggled of late but have progressed to the quarter final of the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup which will be played in February. The reserves have progressed
AS THE second batch of league matches approach we’re taking a look at how Liverpool Sefton have started the 18-19 season. The W1s had a tough few months and are still without a win in the Northern Premier League. A series of draws have put points on the board but they haven’t found their old form to take three points. The M1s are sitting comfortably in North Division Two. A change in captaincy hasn’t unbalanced the team with four wins, three draws and four defeats demonstrating steady performances in the build up to Christmas. The W2s had a strong start to the season but came up against tough opposition and slipped to seventh in North Division Two West. The team has a three-point cushion over local rivals Liverpool Uni. The M2s are struggling to find last year’s form after a series
of personnel changes including another new captain. They sit 10th in NW Division 3 South but look likely to remain in the new league. The W3s have taken 14 points from eight games and have a healthy goals for tally of 17. They’re currently in fourth place in Lancashire Division One and only a point behind second placed Mossley Hill. The M3s have settled into their new league nicely. After two successive promotions the lads have lodged themselves firmly in 6th place with six wins and five losses so far. The W4s are the second team in the club still waiting to take all three points. There had been a high turnover of players but as things settle the on-pitch performance is improving. The W5s had a roaring start, winning as many games in the first few weeks as they did all of last season. With a dedicated coach and a healthy squad size the team is looking to push higher in 2019.

Good form continues By Peter Harrison
A PACKED November fixture programme has seen the team record some key wins as the fine form continues. League victories against Dock FC – 2-0 with Timmy Naylor on the score sheet and a 9-1 demolition of AFC Liverpool Reserves – with Anthony Riddel and Kyle Mulby grabbing hat-tricks – were sandwiched by two cup games. The team tasted its first defeat in 90 minutes with a 2-1 reversal against Custys in the quarter final of the I Zingari Cup. Despite taking the lead, the loss was cemented with a goal in the final five minutes.
However, they have progressed to the quarter final of the George Mahon Cup with a thrilling 3-2 victory against Bankfield with goalkeeper Callum Mulby making a great last-minute save. The final league game saw the much awaited local derby against Liverpool Nalgo – both teams play on the same pitch and know each other well. A healthy crowd witnessed a 3-1 Alder victory with Anthony Roberts scoring his second league goal and Kyle Mulby bagging his 10th of the season to become the club’s leading marksman. n Pictured are the Hills – Taylor and Connor – looking rather nervous as a free-kick is about to be drilled into them.
Halfway point for West Derby Hockey By Mark Williams
AFTER a whirlwind half season, we have now almost reached the halfway point and can look forward to a break in proceedings, freeing up our Saturdays for Christmas shopping, mulled wine and mince pies. Looking back over the last three months we have certainly enjoyed some highs with the Men’s 2s registering six wins in a row (including score lines of 11-0 and 10-0), as well as the Men’s 1s enjoying some fantastic wins on the road against Windermere and Lytham Hockey Clubs. The Ladies have also had a
steady start to the season and managed to register back to back wins as well as an emphatic 8-1 win over Formby Ladies 4s. All three teams are in solid positions in their respective leagues with the Men’s first team sitting in seventh place after an exceptionally rough start. The Men’s 2s sit in fifth in what is turning out to be a very tight and exciting league and the Ladies are currently ranked sixth. With relegation out of the question for all teams, the focus firmly looks towards the top of each table with promotion a realistic prospect should results continue in the same fashion.

Veterans march on but League team hit the buffers ... By Mick Titherington
MIXED fortunes for Stoneycroft teams over recent weeks – whilst the over 40s side have powered on maintaining a 100 per cent record in the I Zingari Combination, with a goal difference to match Manchester City’s, the league side suffered their first defeat at home to MSB Woolton. The Vets are having a fantastic season taking all before them with a style of play earning them rave notices. Their latest victims were a capable Aintree Villa side, who will give many teams problems, but with goals from Price, Butterworth and S.Burquest with Durkin replying for the Villa they proved no match for the on-fire Croft. It was a different story in the league with a roller coaster of a month. The game up at Kirkby against the Parky turned into an acrimonious affair and although goals from Jay Kennedy (2), Alex Kelly and Luke Daley saw the Croft run out easy winners the game was an instantly forgettable experience. A return to the town to play AFC Kirkby ended with the visitors bagging another three points as they cruised to a 6-2 victory. Jay Kennedy (2), Luke Daley, Kieran Ledson, Jamie Burgess and Josh Quarless on the score sheet with Gary Riley (2) netting for Kirkby. A return to Maiden Lane saw them entertain MSB Woolton. With a number of players missing, the Croft failed to maintain any sort of rhythm and for large parts
Luke Daley in action against MSB Woolton. of the game they looked out of sorts. MSB took the lead early on but just before half time a superb move involving eight players and numerous passes culminated in Jay Kennedy applying a sublime finish to draw level. The second period saw the home side enjoy the larger share of possession but without any real penetration. Woolton applied the route one tactic which proved successful as Croft defenders found it hard to cope with the pacey forwards. When the Croft did break through they found the Woolton keeper in fine form, thwarting two or three attempts with fine saves. The visitors regained the lead and extended it before the outstanding Stoneycroft player, Josh Quarless, pulled one back but it was not enough to rescue their unbeaten record. They say that you learn more from a defeat than a victory. Let’s hope they do.
