HIDE AND SEEK By Stephen Guy
IT was once known for its terrace Ancient buildings sometimes have secret features created by accident or design in the structure, often deeply entwined with the history of the place. Sometimes rooms or even suites of rooms in rambling stately homes were sealed off for one reason or another. When a family member died their accommodation, and belongings, could become out of bounds for distressed relatives. Castles easily lent themselves to concealment with their massive walls and deep foundations. Prisoners were hidden away in dank underground dungeons. Conwy Castle has a hidden room where the monarch could watch services in the chapel below - a private loo was provided as services could be very long. At Glamis Castle in Scotland it as said a disfigured or disa ed member of the family was kept in a secret room with a solitary

window. Some rooms, while not exactly secret, may be kept locked because people do not want the contents or purpose of the space revealed. Many years ago I stayed in a Lake District house where I noticed something strange about a a at the top of a ight of stairs. Careful inspection revealed a door that had been wallpapered over. When opened, it led to an empty attic.
Old houses were more suitable for creating concealed areas than modern dwellings. Historic piles often seem to have been built without plans. When the builders reached a certain point they simply constructed a wall to block off voids and spaces. Castles and country houses commonly had secret places for use in time of siege or emergencies. However, it was at the time of religious persecution that the creation of hopefully secure
hiding places became something of a fine art During the 16th and 17th centuries priest holes were devised in Catholic houses at a time when it was illegal for priests to celebrate mass. A priest hole can be seen in the attic at Speke Hall (pictured). In an atmosphere of religious intolerance (echoed to some parts of the world today) anyone converting a Protestant to Catholicism was put to death. Everyone had to attend Church of England services – peop e ere fined if they refused. Priests were publicly hanged for conducting mass. Jesuit Nicholas Owen was a concealment specialist secretly engaged to create hiding places for priests. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free.

“I started an Adult Art Class business in early 2016. With Moira’s help at The Link I was able to place suitable advertisements and editorials that appealed to potential students. The response rate has been fantastic. My business is up and running and going from strength to strength. Thank you!” Alyson – Seasons Art Class Liverpool “I have been using the South Liverpool Link for advertising for the past year and a half. I have found it to be the most effective and cost effective print marketing in the area. Particularly useful as it is delivered through my target market’s letterboxes as well as being available at local businesses. I track success by the number of mentions I get and new customers advertising brings in and The Link is the only print marketing I now do. Prices are good and the service from Moira and the team at the Link is excellent. Would recommend”. Strange Tale – By Anton Valdemart
Press button B THEO was comfortably off and enjoyed spending his money but there was one thing he could never resist. It caused constant embarrassment to his wife Barbara and daughters Kate and Carol: he could never pass a telephone box without pressing button B. Callers paid tuppence when they made a call – the two pennies clanged a bell when put into the slot. If the phone was answered, the caller pressed button A and the pennies clattered into the cash box and the call put through. If there was no answer, the caller pressed button B and retrieved their deposit. However, some people forgot and the next person in the box got the money if they pressed button B. Theo could never resist the urge to try for some coins. He travelled about as an insurance salesman and on this occasion was in an unfamiliar part of the city. Large detached houses lined the road where he sold a lucrative policy to a headmaster. The kiosk stood away from the houses next to a
fie d here a da p ist was drifting over from Camp Hill creating an eerie, unworldly atmosphere. Theo did not have any change and he hoped button B would deliver – it did. He would call Barbara and say he was on his way back. The two pennies that dropped down looked freshly minted, gleaming in the gloom, seeming to give off a strange light. Theo dialled his home, there was an answer and he pressed button A. “Daddy, you’ve been so long,” said the little girl. Theo didn’t recognise the voice which had an odd gurgling quality. “Is Mummy, Kate or Carol there?” he asked, thinking it was a friend of theirs. The child carried on as if she hadn’t heard: “Daddy, it’s so cold here - where are you?” She burst into tears and the line went dead. When Theo got home he discovered that the phone hadn’t rung all evening. He dismissed the incident as a wrong number but felt a deep sense of unease.
He returned the following ee to fina ise the headmaster’s insurance policy. “It was a tragic case,” said the teacher, looking sadly out of the window. “Amanda Golightly was a lovely child, all ribbons and curls. She enjoyed nature and would wander about singing and laughing, chasing birds and running after utter ies “It happened during the s hoo ho ida s five ears ago. Amanda left her house when nanny was on the telephone. “Amanda must have left the footpath going across the fie d erhaps she was following a moth or utter in the t i ight “They found her the next day in Watson’s pond. There was nothing anyone could do.” He paused to knock his pipe out into the ash tray. “Amanda’s right hand was tightly clenched. When it was prised open they found two shiny new pennies. “It was thought she was tr ing to find the phone o but who knows?”

Cat of the month: Fairy and her kittens THIS poor young cat was expecting kittens, but had nowhere to go. She was tired and hungry, and knew it was soon her time. Luckily she found a quiet back garden in Speke, and just in time too. But she was still hungry, and still tired. And it was very cold too, and she was just lying in the grass as there were no sheds or anything like that which would have provided a bit of shelter for her and her lovely kittens.
We got the call from the lady who lived in the house saying that there was a cat there with tiny kittens crawling over her - and we knew from what she said that the kittens were new-borns. So Fairy, as she got called by our helpers, was brought into our care, and is now thriving even though at first she was too frightened to eat anything. Her kittens are still tiny and too young to be re-homed but if anyone is interested then please contact us on 0151 494
0470 or 07745 167170. We are hoping to find a forever home for Fairy with one of her kittens as we think that this is a far kinder thing to do, rather than to bereave her of all her precious kittens. All potential adopters are home-checked to ensure that they are going to a safe home. Garston Animal Rescue, Reg’d Charity 701001. Help us to help as many abandoned animals as possible. ADVERTISING ANNOUNCEMENT
This month we talk to Gregory Abrams, Senior Partner at Gregory Abrams Davidson Solicitors (GAD LLP) about the GAD brand and what it means to clients. Why do clients choose GAD?
Which legal services do GAD offer clients?
Trust has a significant role in selecting a firm and can only be earned. We’ve had offices in Liverpool for very many years. Many of our clients and their families have been using our services for generations. They also recommend us to their friends but we never take anything for granted. We work very hard to ensure that our service is always excellent. We ask all our clients for feedback, many provide us with testimonials which we publish on our website. Last year, over 90% of our clients thought our service was either excellent or good.
Our extensive range of services are set out on our website which can be found at www.gadllp.co.uk.
What are the benefits of having more than one office in Liverpool? Even with the advance of technology, many clients prefer to come into the office. Clients find having an office close to either home or work very convenient. It can also save time if you use a solicitor with sound local knowledge of the area when you buying or selling a property. You’ve recently re-branded the Stephen D Brine offices on Allerton Road. Can you tell me about your plans? Stephen D Brine Solicitors (SDB) was a trading name for GAD for a number of years. We believe that clients may have been unaware of this connection and the wealth of other legal services that GAD can provide for them. Stephen and the staff are very much a part of GAD. Their clients will continue to receive the excellent service they’ve become accustomed to. The Allerton Road team and location haven’t changed. What will the GAD brand offer to clients? We’ve identified three key attributes that help us continually achieve our client’s expectations: excellent service levels, experience, specific legal expertise and client focus.
How do you help businesses? We start by listening – this extends to all our client base. We will take the time to understand our clients’ requirements. It is essential if we are to provide tailored expert guidance that helps clients’ achieve their goals. We believe in developing a long term, personal relationship with our business clients. From Start-up to Sale, we’re here to help. We’ve an expert readily at hand to help with Employment Law. We have launched GAD HR which is an HR support scheme to help local businesses minimise the potential for employment disputes and their consequences. Mostly we focus upon helping businesses avoid making costly errors. We are always accessible to provide guidance, opinion and legal support. This approach enables businesses to concentrate on their core activity. We also recognise that when you’re running a business, it’s mostly fast paced, requiring instantaneous decisions, and sometimes there’s very little time to think! Occasionally things can go wrong. That’s why “you’ll want us on your side”. We are also involved in the local community as we are the new sponsors of the Down South Liverpool Networking events. The next event is at The Stables Restaurant at Allerton Golf Club on Wednesday 26th April 2017 between 9am and 11am. If anyone is interested in attending then please email info@gadllp.co.uk with your contact details. GAD also have a Litigation team, which areas do you advise upon? The majority of our work involves the resolution of multiple legal issues within a single case. Our specialist expertise is in cases where the capacity, capability, or
vulnerability of one of the parties is a key issue in the determination of the dispute. Liverpool Sefton end the season with more glory By Chris Thomas
AFTER the en s first tea ended the season as league champions it was left to the women’s 3s and 4s to add to the trophy collection. On a warm April afternoon at Liverpool College the women’s 4s played Wigan in the fina of the an ashire Plate, followed by the much anticipated Lancashire Cup fina et een the o en s 3s and Northern. he p ate fina as a ose affair, with Wigan taking the lead only for Liverpool Sefton to respond with a well-executed short corner. With the sides unable to be separated during normal
time, the match went to a penalty shoot-out. With Jenny Ratcliffe proving to be unbeatable in the goal and a set of calm penalty strokes Liverpool Sefton eased to a win in the shoot-out. One win down, one game to go! he s had a diffi u t tas against Northern, who had strolled to the league title with an unbeaten record. The game started as many would have expected, with Northern taking an early lead. However, Liverpool Sefton did not wobble and quickly responded with an equaliser. The rest of the half progressed without any further scoring and the teams
went in even at half time. The second half performance by Liverpool Sefton can be summarised in one word – sensational! Scrapping for every ball and showing an unbelievable desire to win the game, the team scored 4 unanswered goals to run out well deserved 5-1 winners. A well-earned outcome following all the hard work and preparation put in by the girls prior to the match. A good night was then had by all at the Annual Awards inner ith over peop e turning up to celebrate a truly successful season for all.
Being accountable
WITH regard to achieving goals, one of the main things you need is accountability. Being accountable is being responsible for a required movement, related to something or someone else. When you’re personally accountable, you stop assigning blame on people and making excuses. Instead, you take the fall when your choices cause problems.
My own accountability Even I have accountability towards some of the things I want to achieve: n I work with a coach, and report to him every now and again, and let him know what is and isn’t being achieved. n I’m working towards my next dan in Ju Jitsu. I let the federation know when I am doing this and report to training every week. Even when I don’t make it, I still touch base with them. n I’m doing my Black Sash in Kung Fu later on this year. I report to training each week
my coach 9 months ago I a hieved of first day’ outcome plan.
THE LIVERPOOL PERSONAL TRAINER with Paul Coshott.
and have pencilled in the exam n I have a private lesson in Brazilian Ju Jitsu once a week. I probably wouldn’t do it if I was just going to a class n I am about to hire a nutritionist to get my diet better You will achieve far more if you are accountable to someone else - guaranteed. When I started working with
Being accountable – tips Before you work with someone, here are some tips that can help you start being accountable towards your goals: n Tell the truth – everybody messes up sometimes. Lying about it or trying to cover it up makes it worse. n Police yourself – are you accountable for your actions even if nobody holds you accountable - or nobody catches you? Yes you are, so e our o n a ounta i it cop’ and police yourself. n Look to yourself – when trou e arises oo first to ourse f s spe ifi questions: (i) “what is the problem?”, (ii) “what am I doing/ not doing?”, (iii) “what can I do differently to help solve the problem?” and (iv) “how will I be accountable for the result?” n FREE, seven-day trial (only two places left now)
