Delay in Medical Diagnosis or Treatment? The National Audit Office has highlighted more than 4.2 million patients are now on waiting lists for surgery, a 55 per cent rise in five years. The number waiting more than 18 weeks for operations has tripled over the same period, with 528,000 patients forced to wait longer, as key NHS targets have been repeatedly missed. This reports follows a recent announcement that the NHS is considering abandoning its flagship benchmark that patients at A&E will be treated, admitted or sent home within four hours. The four-hour target has not been met nationally since 2015. The watchdog itself warns that “Given that 40 per cent of clinical negligence claims are brought because of delays in diagnosis or treatment, there is a risk that longer waiting times may lead to an increasing number of future claims.” A delay in treatment covers a wide range of issues and could be that a patient does not receive prescribed medication, a laboratory test is ordered but not reported on, they are lost to follow up or a surgical operation is cancelled and does not take place within a recommended timeframe. Of course thankfully in the vast majority of situations a delay, whilst an inconvenience, will not result in any significant injury. Unfortunately

in some situations time is however a critical factor because often the earlier a diagnosis is made and treatment commenced, the better the chances of a patient making a good recovery. If treatment is delayed, this can lead to permanent complications and health issues which could potentially have been avoided.

Garston Village, Allerton and Golders Green, London. If you would like to enquire about a potential Clinical Negligence claim, contact us and ask to speak to a member of our clinical negligence new enquiries team on 0151 733 3353 or by email jward@gadlegal.co.uk

By way of an example, you shouldn’t have to wait more than 2 weeks to see a specialist if your GP suspects you have cancer and urgently refers you. In cases where cancer has been confirmed, you shouldn’t have to wait more than 31 days from the decision to treat to the start of treatment. This is because early and accurate diagnosis and then treatment can be critical and is the reason everyone is encouraged to visit their GP to report any unusual symptoms, as soon as possible. A delay in diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic injuries such as fractures can also have devastating consequences. It is critical that certain fractures, such as to the wrist or ankle are diagnosed without delay in order that they can be immobilised and surgery considered. Delay can affect how the bones heal and result in a permanent loss of function.

TATE Britain and Tate Modern are among Britain’s most popular art galleries, drawing many thousands of visitors every year keen to see the remarkable collections. The galleries are named after Liverpool sugar baron Sir Henry Tate (1819 – 99). Born in Chorley, he was the 11th of 12 children of Unitarian minister Rev William Tate and his wife Agnes. When Henry’s education began, he attended classes taught by his father – thought to be the only formal education he ever received. Henry began his career as a 13-year-old apprentice grocer to his older brother Caleb, who was based in Liverpool. Eventually Henry struck out on his own and some 16 years later was a successful entrepreneur with six shops. Jemima and the goblins Strange Tale by Anton Valdemart

CHILDREN were warned not to go into Dark Wood because a nasty group of villainous goblins inhabited its sombre glades and rocky outcrops. Many people dismissed the stories as superstitious nonsense but some families still held the old beliefs. New villas with modern conveniences might be springing up but the ancient woodland remained untouched, a timeless oasis in spreading suburbia. Jemima had heard the stories when she was little but now she dismissed them as scaremongering. Her parents told her not to go into the wood and she obeyed but things had changed. Jemima was working in the family business, handling orders from all over the world and organising shipments through the docks. Sundays were spent quietly and, after morning service, she had much-needed time to herself. Jemima decided to explore

Dark Wood. It was dusk on a summer’s evening as she strolled with Jasper the dog. She let him off his lead and he disappeared, presumably chasing some creature in the woods. Jasper caught the little man tightly round the ankle. The goblin struggled and managed to escape through a crevice in the rocks. His face was twisted with rage as he planned to destroy Jasper. He was just about to cast a spell when Jemima came into view. Grimacer the goblin watched from his hiding place. He was entranced by the sight of Jemima leading Jasper away. His face was transformed into a look of blissful adoration. Back at the cave, Grimacer described the vision he had encountered. “You’re lying – nobody comes into the woods,” growled Greenteeth. “I agree,” seconded Wrinklecheek. Two others, Hackcough and Wartsqueezer, also questioned

Grimacer’s story. All made a pact to bring Jemima back into the wood using magic. It had been a particularly bad week at the docks. Consignments had been mislaid and a shipment destined for Venezuela had ended up in Panama. Jemima sat reading in the study as father dozed in his chair. Some strange force sent her walking briskly down the road into Dark Wood. “There now, see! Is she not beautiful?” croaked Grimacer. All nodded, eyes moist with love. Jemima was oblivious but

shook herself and decided to walk over to her aunt’s house instead. “I want to be her husband,” announced Grimacer. “No – she will be my bride!” exclaimed Wartsqueezer. The other three made similar declarations. There was an unseemly scuffle then Grimacer announced: “Let the lovely stranger choose who will be her husband.” Wrinklecheek was chosen to devise the spell although his magic had been known to misfire. The incantation was chanted over a steaming cauldron.Later Jemima could not remember going to the wood. In a dream-like state she encountered five little men simpering at her. Delighted and charmed, she planted a kiss on each smiling face. The next thing she was looking at five slimy amphibians staring back at her. There were no more goblins in Dark Wood – but plenty of toads. Q Read my next Strange Tale – Bouncing Ben– in the next Link.

Conference aimed at changing care system A good time was had by all!

The Pavilion’s Grand National lunch was a real winner! PETER and I had a great time on Grand National day recently. Not at Aintree but a wonderful day at The Pavilion, Liverpool Cricket Club, at their Grand National lunch/afternoon. A spacious and luxurious marquee with a well-stocked bar and bookies on hand to take bets, The Pavilion was an ideal venue for the occasion and a great day was had

by all (we even won a few bob!). A lovely 3-course lunch was accompanied by great music from The Grasshoppers and John O’Connell (ex-Groundpig). It was just like being at Aintree but without the crowds and without having to queue for food, drink and a taxi home! Looking forward to next year!

A GROUND-BREAKING new conference aimed at changing the care system in England by learning from people of all ages who have experienced it will take place this month. The event hopes to highlight how key decisions are made about the nation’s care system and urge politicians and civil servants to listen more to ordinary people [MXL ½VWX LERH I\TIVMIRGI More than 150 people aged between 15 and 75 are due to attend the conference, which will take place at Liverpool Hope University on Friday April 26. %RRI 0SRK½IPH XLI GLMPHVIR´W commissioner for England, said:

“In my role I am fortunate to hear directly from a lot of young people who are in care or who have recently left. “But never before have we also heard the voices of such a wide spectrum of care experienced people. “This conference gives us a unique opportunity to learn from the past and improve things for the future” The conference will feature workshops to capture the experiences and views of care experience people. There will also be sessions which are informed by academic research.

New chapter for former library WORK is to begin on a multimillion pound transformation of a former library into a new community centre. The project, backed by a £3.9m grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, will see the former Andrew Carnegie Library in Lister Drive, Tuebrook, given a new lease of life. Liverpool City Council, which owns the building and is contributing £500,000 to the

scheme, has appointed specialist contractors HH Smith & Sons Ltd to undertake the 12 month restoration. The Grade II Listed building, which was vacant for six years until 2012 when community based charity Lister Steps, which has provided childcare and family support to local residents for the past 20 years, was selected to take on the building and develop its service.

Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Do I need experience? A: No you do not. Sometimes, the tasks we carry out in every day life give us all the experience we need. The role of supporting somebody in their personal life can include prompts or assistance to wash and dress, cooking, preparing meals, shopping, making lists, cleaning etc. It can be about assisting somebody to access the local community. Providing somebody with the encouragement and support they need to complete daily tasks confidently and independently can make a huge difference. Q: Do I receive training? A: Full training and support is provided. All staff are given the opportunity to be enrolled on to a Health & Social Care Qualification in addition to the mandatory training which is provided at the beginning. But like anything, you learn more when you’re actually involved in it. Every day is different and every day, we learn something new. Q: Am i right for this kind of work? A: Yes! The annual Eventex Awards is seen as the events industry’s highest accolade and sets the benchmark for events across the globe. Now in its ninth year, this year’s awards saw more than 331 entries in a range of categories across 42 countries all eager to be the best.

Liverpool has picked up: Best Event Destination, as well as Best UK Event and The Grand Prix People’s Choice Event for the Giant Spectacular Liverpool’s Dream. The winners of the other categories were determined by a distinguished panel of international judges, including Laura Schwartz, who was director of events for the Clinton administration and chief exec of events industry bible BizBash, David Adler.

Choosing the right outfit for heading to the gym HEY guys and welcome to my May/June edition of Life ‘n’ Style. I have been a bit of a gym freak lately and got back into a bit of a spinning routine. I used to attend a spinning class 4/5 times a week at David Lloyd in Speke but I drifted from it and had a couple of years break but when I was told about the Suites in Knowsley opening a new studio I was over the moon. They offer hot and cold training sessions – Yoga, Pilates, Spinning, HIIT and silent Disco Spinning – and have a really good timetable and instructors. If you are looking to get in shape for any upcoming holidays then it’s worth downloading The Studio At The Suites app on your phone and have a little nose at the classes and the memberships that are on offer. - XLMRO LEPJ XLI FEXXPI MW LEZMRK ]SYV SYX½XW ready when you are trying to get yourself into XLI K]Q ½XRIWW ^SRI -J ]SY EVI PMOI QI ERH look for any excuse in the world to not go if you’re in one of ‘those’ moods I always thinks it’s best to have a couple of SYX½XW ]SY GER VSXEXI 7S MJ ]SY EVI PSSOMRK for a few little bits then make sure you check out Matalan Souluxe range. I’m a big lover of animal print at the min so fell in love with this Animal Print Legging and crop top set for £24 for them both. The leggings are extra comfy with a deep waist band that pulls you in and black panelling down each side of the leg and the crop is great on its own as it has padded cups or can be worn as a great base for a layering option.

What 10 things are you good at? By Paul Coshott THE other day, when I was in the gym, I was in a bit of a depressive state. I was complaining to a mate of mine that I’d lost some time in the morning. “I can’t believe I’ve lost an hour this morning. I’ve dithered around for a little bit, and it’s cost me. I’ve got so much to do” “You’re too hard on yourself ”, he replied “I bet you’ve done loads of things this morning”. “Mmmmm, I’m not so sure”. “Come on, I bet you’ve done something. You’re very talented. You’ve done pretty well for

yourself and you have a lot of clients” he went on to say. My friend continued: “I remember when I worked as teacher. One day I asked my students, to write down the 10 things that they’re good at. “They all looked in disbelief and couldn’t think of anything. I then EWOIH XLIQ XS [VMXI ½ZI XLMRKW down, that they are good at. “Again, they looked at me in disbelief. They couldn’t think of anything. I then asked them to write down 10 things that they are bad at, and they started making a list”. He carried on: “That’s what we do. We focus on the negative things that are going on. I bet there’s loads of people who would love to be like you. Maybe just focus on what you have right now”. Haha, talk about taking some of my own medicine, but he was right! I never really allow myself to live in the moment and appreciate what I have or where I am. I always want more, or better and,

most of the time, that’s not good. So, here’s a little exercise for you to do... What 10 things are you good at? If you’re struggling to think of ER]XLMRK XLMRO SJ ½ZI ERH MJ ]SY´VI still struggling, think of 10 things you are bad at (you probably won’t be able to list 10 and this can contribute towards your

River Festival promises the Earth THE popular River Festival Liverpool returns in June and a huge 23ft replica of the earth will be one of the event highlights. Located in Liverpool Cathedral, the artwork called ‘Gaia’ (meaning XLI TIVWSRM½GEXMSR SJ XLI IEVXL will hang in the Grade I listed building and features accurate and detailed NASA imagery of the Earth. The installation, by renowned British artist Luke Jerram, will be complemented with a sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones. Gaia will be open to the public from May 25 – a week before the

free festival takes place on June 1 and 2. The artwork forms part of the ‘Changing Tides’ creative programme, which last year saw the Museum of the Moon installed in the Cathedral attracting 60,000 visitors to the venue in just two weeks. This year’s programme celebrates the port of Liverpool as an arrival and departure base for exemplary culture, music, food and wine from all over earth. Gaia will be in position for four weeks until June 23, and a programme of events and talks will take place under the Earth during its run.

Ships Ahoy: The Crystal Serenity docks in Liverpool LIVERPOOL’S biggest-ever cruise season is officially upon us! The annual cavalcade of cruise ships begins tomorrow (Friday 12 April), when luxury liner the Costa Mediterranea makes its first voyage down the Mersey. Over the next seven months, Liverpool City Council’s multi-award winning cruise terminal will welcome a record-breaking 86 ships carrying an estimated 165,000 passengers and crew. Now in its 12th year of operation, the cruise terminal generated more than £7m for the city’s local economy last year, this year that figure is expected to almost double to £12m. The Costa Mediterranea is one of 11 newcomers to the terminal this season. It will be bringing more than 2,000 passengers to Liverpool en route from Dublin to Belfast. The ship will dock at approximately 7.30am tomorrow, with a Liverpool Town Crier welcoming passengers onto dry land at 8am. Later in the day (4pm) Lord Mayor of Liverpool Cllr Christine Banks will exchange ceremonial plaques with the ship’s captain before it is waved

off at 6pm. Other inaugural visits to Liverpool this year will come from Celebrity Reflection, the Viking Jupiter and the Norwegian Spirit, which will visit three times. Other highlights of the season include the arrival of two Cunard ships throughout the season – Queen Victoria on 12 June and August 19 and Queen Mary 2 on 16 July. The Disney Magic cruise liner will make its fifth return journey to the city on 13 September. Liverpool City Council’s Director of Culture, Claire McColgan, said: “Liverpool has firmly secured its status as one of the favourite destinations for many of the big cruise liners. “This is because of the amazing work of everyone involved with the terminal and the warm welcome passengers get when they visit our city. The fact that so many ships will be coming to Liverpool this year is a testament to the success of the terminal and it is something that everyone in our city should be really proud of. Cruise season in Liverpool is always an exciting time and this year I am sure it will surpass expectations.”

Inappropriate toileting in cats By Jenna Davidson MRCVS The Vet Liverpool THE main reasons why cats may deposit urine or faeces in inappropriately around the house are either associated with medical conditions, marking behaviour for communication or selection of another toileting location due to preference. Medical problems should be ruled out before a behavioural diagnosis can be made. However, a medical problem can contribute to behavioural toilet issues! For example, older cats may struggle to use their litter tray due to joint pain or in cases of dementia. Marking behaviour (rubbing or scratching), although perfectly

acceptable to cats, is most likely to be offensive to the owner. Cats that are marking are content with their litter boxes in comparison to cats that have chosen a new toileting location. Treatment for marking includes neutering, reducing stress (Feliway diffusers), enriching the environment and most importantly reducing tension in multi-cat households. Cats that have chosen a new toileting location are usually treatable by providing more appealing litterboxes (change litter type/depth, box style, location, multiple boxes), as well as reducing the appeal and accessibility of inappropriate toilet spots.

Cat of the month – Sam SAM is about 10 years old. He had been a stray for years with a lovely lady feeding him but as she’s moving he was taken into rescue for safety. When we took him to the vets to be checked out, they found a bullet where he’d been shot by an EMV VM¾I This would go to explain why he’s so shy. He will need a quiet home with someone who can be patient with him and he can live with other cats.
