4th Allerton Sea Scouts – Simply the best THE 4th Allerton Sea Scout Troop is the best in the country, said Royal Navy Commander Richard Bone on a ‘goodwill’ visit to the troop this month. “I’ve been with the Royal Navy for more than 30 years and I’ve seen many troops but I reckon the 4th is the best,” he said. But Richard would say that, wouldn’t he?! He took the troop members by surprise when he revealed he had been a Sea Scout in the 4th Allerton forty years earlier. The ex-Garston lad regaled today’s sea scouts and parents with a host of amusing anecdotes and memories. Troop leader David Hope had invited the Commander, currently based at HMS Raleigh (near Plymouth) to visit his old troop – now meeting at Allerton URC on Mather Avenue – and to present Chief Scout’s Gold
Challenge Awards to senior patrol leaders Chris McCarthy and CameronWard. The duo was also presented with impressive HM Submarine baseball caps while troop members received a selection of RN ‘freebies’. Chris and Cameron completed the Gold Standard while on this summer’s trip to Loch Etive, Argyllshire, withanovernighttwoday boat expedition to the head of the loch, camping in some of the most remote countryside in the Highlands. Commander Bone inspected the troop (one of only 100 in the UK supported by the RN Recognition Scheme), visited the programmed training sessions, answered questions relating to his impressive display of medals reflecting service in many parts of the world... and then discarded his jacket, relaxed and joined the lads in games of deck hockey and

Half-timbered houses... By Stephen Guy
BEFORE the widespread use of mass-produced bricks and other products, natural materials including stone, thatch and clay were used for building. Centuries ago there were few if any building regulations. People were generally satisfied if the construction was sturdy, weather proof and unlikely to collapse. Castles and cathedrals took many years to build and involved skilled architects and masons. Until the 17th century most houses were made of wood. There were many woodlands and forests, often with large mature trees providing excellent timber. South Liverpool including Woolton and Halewood had thousands of trees up to the Napoleonic Wars when large numbers were felled for ship building and other works. The Great Fire of London in 1666 demonstrated how vulnerable large areas of wooden buildings were in urban areas. Builders increasingly used stone and brick instead.
Traditional half-timbered buildings are often thought of as being typically English – they are featured in many landscape views. However, such buildings exist in many parts of the world including China, Japan and throughout northern Europe. Half-timbered buildings are traditionally made from oak beams to make a cage-like frame. The spaces between the timbers
were often filled with wattle and daub. This consisted of interwoven twigs plastered with a mixture of clay, lime, water and sometimes dung and chopped straw. Plaster and brick were also employed between the timbers. The wood was left in its natural form but the infill was frequently limewashed. The fashion for dark timbers – giving the classic black-and-white
look – grew in the 19th century. However, modern refurbishments can restore the timber to its natural look. Speke Hall is one of our finest half-timbered buildings. The Old Red Lion in Willaston is another good example. Many have been lost over the years including Lydiate Old Hall, now a romantic ruin but with few surviving traces of its half-timbers. The Victorians and Edwardians promoted the mock-Tudor look and many examples can be seen in the suburbs including Port Sunlight. At about this time timbers were added for purely decorative effect – there was no structural need for them. An example was half-timbered Childwall Vicarage, seen on a 1907 tinted postcard (pictured). The picturesque building was extensively altered over the centuries before being demolished in 1928 and a parish hall built on the site. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free.

Win a copy of this beautiful book...
LITTLE did teacher Bob Thurlow and architect and photographer David Wrightson realise when, in 1974, they finished their book on Liverpool city-centre pubs of the 60’s and 70’s that it would take 44 years for it to be published. The manuscript and photographs had been almost forgotten in a drawer in Bob’s house during all that time. But this year, with the help of the Bluecoat Press, the finished product saw the light of day. Over 170 public houses are described - and, yes, Bob had to visit them all! - and over 50 are illustrated; sadly many of these are now either closed or demolished. In the 60’s and 70’s Liverpool was starting to undergo a period of change and redevelopment and this book gives an insight into not only some of the things which were lost, but also into
some of the glories which have been retained. The Vines, the Philharmonic and the Crown are all still there to be visited and enjoyed in all their decorative splendour, but there are also many pubs of lesser fame which are worthy of investigation – this book can give you some tips. And there are some intriguing stories and bits of gossip to be told about some of these pubs too! READERS FREE PRIZE DRAW There’s a copy up for grabs. To be in with a chance of winning this beautiful book please send your name, address and Tel. No. to:- INN LIVERPOOL BOOK, Liverpool LINK, P.O. Box 170, Liverpool, L25 7WX or email your name, address and Tel. No. to complink@ yahoo.com and insert INN LIVERPOOL in he subject box please. To reach us by 7th November 2018.

Don’t ignore these signs of mouth cancer By Ben Harvey
AS part of Mouth Cancer Action Month in November, organisers the Oral Health Foundation and dentists across the UK are challenging everyone to check for any unusual changes inside their mouths. Cancer Research UK has reported a staggering 68 per cent increase in mouth cancer rates in the last 20 years. However, early diagnosis transforms our chances of beating
the disease from 50 per cent to 90 per cent. Mouth cancer can strike in the lips, tongue, gums and cheek and those who smoke and drink alcohol to excess are at most at risk. Three signs and symptoms not to ignore are: n Ulcers that do not heal in three weeks. n Red and white patches in the mouth. n Unusual lumps or swellings in
the mouth or the head and neck area. It only takes a few seconds every day to spot anything out of the ordinary in your mouth. If you have any of the warning signs of mouth cancer it is vitally important that you visit your dental practice or GP straight away – it could just save your life. Gymophobics Garden Party raises funds for Defibrillator
MEMBERS of Gymophobics Ladies Only Fitness Centre (on the corner of Green Lane and Allerton Road) and their friends joined the team of Instructors at a Late Summer Garden Party in a marquee in the grounds of Aigburth People’s Hall on Sunday 23rd September. The event was organised by Gymophobics Instructor, Antonia, with the aim of providing a lovely setting for ladies to enjoy some social time together, while raising funds for a defibrillator, which will also benefit the businesses and customers around the Fitness Centre. The event gave ladies the opportunity to put on their Sunday Best for an Ascot-style afternoon tea, with live music from the Songbird Duo and a Fashion Show facilitated by Bags of Sparkles of Garston. Paula has an amazing range of fashionable garments to suit all

tastes, shapes and sizes. Several of the models are Members of Gymophobics. One-off pieces of jewellery, created by one of our Members who runs Unique Liverpool Bling, were also on sale. Another Member spoke very movingly about her personal experience of the life-saving benefits of having a defibrillator close at hand when an emergency occurs.
Antonio Franco captured the lovely atmosphere of the afternoon with his stunning photography. www.antoniofranco. net To help with the fundraising element of the day, a Prize Draw was held, made up of so many wonderful gifts that we had to do the Draw in two parts. Many of the gifts were donated by local businesses (see our
website for the full list of names www.gymophobics.co.uk/gyms/ south-liverpool) We are delighted to announce that thanks to the generosity of our Members, their friends and our supporters, we have raised the funds needed to purchase a defibrillator ‘package’ through the Oliver King Foundation, a South Liverpool charity. All the Gymophobics Instructors have now received their training and the defibrillator is installed in the Centre. We hope that we will never have to use it, but it is great to know that we have the resources to respond to an emergency, should the need arise. Antonia and the Directors of Gymophobics would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making the Garden Party such a happy and worthwhile event.

WHEN DEATH IS SUSPECTED AS A RESULT OF POOR MEDICAL CARE No matter what the circumstances, losing a loved one unexpectedly is always traumatic. This can become even more traumatic when a loved one has died in circumstances where negligent medical care is suspected. Families understandably want answers whenever substandard medical treatment is suspected. Additionally whilst money can in no way compensate for the death, the family left behind can often be left under considerable financial strain. A fatal claim can arise from any substandard treatment provided by a wide range of health professionals such as GPs, Surgeons, Nurses, Midwives etc. It does not matter whether the treatment occurred with a private hospital or was provided by the NHS. Examples of cases we see include: • Delays in the diagnosis of cancer or other serious condition which require urgent intervention; • Complications during or following surgery; • Failures to recognise and treat sepsis • Delays in treating pressure sores/skin ulcersresulting in septicemia • Inappropriate or delayed pregnancy care Claim Process - A solicitor will obtain the relevant medical records, a statement about what has happened and any other documents relevant to the case. If it is suspected a GP has been negligent by, for example, failing to refer to hospital, then a GP expert would be instructed to consider the available evidence. The expert would be required to consider the standard of care and if failures are identified, whether in the absence of those failures death would have been avoided. Normally more than one expert is required. If supportive medical evidence is obtained then a formal process commences with your solicitor sending a Letter of Claim setting out the allegations, details of the injuries and losses. Whilst cases can end up in Court, this is very rare because if there is a dispute, the Parties will send each other their medical evidence and the experts would then meet to discuss any disagreements. Therefore in my experience it is very unlikely that cases go to Trial.
Compensation - Generally, in the case of a fatal claim for compensation this can be brought firstly on behalf of the deceased’s estate for: • Pain, suffering and loss of amenity of the deceased. There is no specific award for death and where death is sudden damages can be very low. If however death was preceded by suffering which could have been avoided or the deceased is aware of their impending death awards will be higher. • Associated losses / expenses. This could include funeral expenses, costs of probate, loss of earnings during the period the deceased was alive but unable to work due to failures in their care. In addition to a claim on behalf of the estate, which is fairly limited in its scope a claim can be brought on behalf of the dependants of the deceased under the Fatal Accidents Act 1976. A dependent may be a spouse or ex-spouse, a person who had been co-habiting with the deceased as husband or wife or as a civil partner for at least two years prior to the death, blood children and other descendants including adopted children and children through marriage or civil partnership, parents or ascendants including grandparents, great grandparents and those treated by the deceased as a parent, brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews The main element of dependency is a share of the earnings that the deceased would have contributed to the household income had they survived. The loss of income will not however be the only loss that dependants suffer as normally they will also have lost the benefit of any services the deceased provided. The list is endless but common examples are childcare, household chores, transport, DIY and Gardening. There is also the potential for recovering a nominal amount of £12,980 in the form of a Statutory Award for Bereavement. This is separate from the amount dependants are entitled to but only one award of bereavement damages is payable. This

is only payable to the spouse of the deceased or the parents of a deceased if they were a minor. Where more than one person is eligible then the sum is divided equally. Time Limits - As a general rule the limitation period for fatal accident claims is 3 years from the date of death or the date of knowledge of the Dependant. Assessing the correct limitation date can however be complicated and it is therefore important that specialist legal advice is obtained without any delay. At Gregory Abrams Davidson Solicitors we assist clients across the country in bringing claims against hospitals, dentists and GPs, both NHS and private. Car park set to be demolished
WORK could get underway next month demolishing the multi-storey Waterfront Car Park in Liverpool ravaged by fire on New Year’s Eve. A report to the Cabinet says detailed logistical plans have been drawn up to take down the car park, which has 1,191 vehicles inside it – of which 1,033 are completely burnt out. None of the cars can be removed before demolition because of safety concerns about the residual strength of the building. There are proposed plans for a new, nine-floor car park for 1,650 vehicles at Monarch’s Quay. The new car park will be fitted with state of the art CCTV and payments system, electric charging points, sprinkler system, 15 motorcycle spaces and 50 cycle spaces. It will also have 100 disabled parking spaces and fully accessible fire evacuation lifts.

Are you VAT-registered? Making Tax Digital represents the largest shake up to the UK tax system in decades and spells the end of manual VAT return preparation for most UK businesses.
From 1 April 2019 all VAT registered businesses in the UK will be legally required to: 1. Maintain their accounting records digitally; 2. Ensure there are digital links between financial software within the business; and 3. Submit VAT returns to HMRC using compatible software. The changes mark the opening phase of the government’s planned MTD regime, which will eventually expand to requiring all UK taxpayers to file digital tax returns for VAT, Income Tax and Corporation Tax purposes. What Does It Mean? At present around 88% of all VAT returns are submitted using HMRC’s online VAT portal. With
effect from 1 April 2019, this portal will be withdrawn in all but a few circumstances. From this date, returns will have to be made under MTD, with all submissions being made digitally through HMRC-approved software or API-bridging software. The latter option will enable records to be maintained in API-enabled Excel documents, but this is likely to involve a complete change in layout to any current Excel documents you may be using at present. Furthermore, with the planned expansion of MTD to other areas of the tax system, we recommend that all clients consider the most beneficial option over the longer term. Record-keeping The new MTD framework will require all VAT-registered businesses to maintain their records in a digital format.Although manual records will no longer be permitted, the MTD regulations do not require your actual invoices to
be retained in electronic format. Instead, the changes focus on how the accounting records themselves are maintained. The requirements to maintain digital records are complex but will see increased record-keeping requirements for most businesses. Getting ready Key to making a success of MTD will be the ability to properly plan for the changes that it will bring to your business.
With the changes scheduled to start from 1 April 2019, business owners should be taking action now to identify suitable software products and to properly plan their implementation and staff training. We at Coburn McKenna offer a friendly, proactive service to all of our clients and are already helping a wide range of businesses to migrate from manual and/or outdated systems to fully MTDcompliant software with minimal effort.
From start-ups looking for support and assistance in developing their business, to established businesses looking for expert planning and advice, Coburn McKenna are the ideal partner.

The Alchemist... By Anton Valdemart
He was regarded as one of the best teachers at the school, his distinguished presence admired by staff and pupils. Oswald Percival had been head of science at St Bertha’s Academy for longer than anyone could remember. He was certainly there when the Franco Prussian War raged because this was one of his favourite subjects when he was not talking about chemistry. There was an air of the magician about Mr Percival. He was fond of theatrical gestures when conducting experiments and particularly enjoyed creating small explosions and large clouds of smoke. This grabbed the boys’ attention, of course. With a twinkle in his eye he would prepare class for the next nervewracking boom or splatter. There was humour in it as well, sometimes ensuring some luckless pupil would be covered with gunge by the end of the lesson. It was Gumm – nicknamed Pinky - who found the rock. He
had been walking over the grassy banks of the rec, nursing a tooth chipped in a rugger match, when he spotted the rock sticking out of some mud. Carefully wiping the rock down with his sleeve, he was intrigued by the shimmering blue and green veins in the heavy grey slate. “Intriguing,” said Mr Percival, examining the rock at the next lesson. He put the specimen down and picked up a battered book. The boys remained silent in anticipation as he thumbed through the volume, looking quizzically through his pince-nez. Mr Percival took a sip from the bottle of cordial he always kept for lubrication of his vocal chords. “I have not demonstrated alchemy for many years but I believe now is the time,” he pronounced, slamming the book with a flourish. This is an unknown type of rock which I believe may be from a meteorite which has crashed to earth.” This was exciting stuff – the class was gripped, so much so that no-one noticed the glint in Mr Percival’s eye.

...Continued from page 16 “People have dismissed alchemy as pseudoscience with no place in the modern world,” he sniffed. He picked up his bottle of cordial: “What would you say if I told you this is an elixir that will prolong life indefinitely?” Mr Percival paused: “You are right to think I am old but could I have lived hundreds of years? Think of the knowledge I may have accrued over centuries.” He turned his attention to the chunk of rock, using a small hammer to chip off a little piece. Reaching for a beaker, the alchemist poured two chemicals
together to create a smoking brew. He placed the lump into the concoction and put his hands around the beaker, muttering strange words. The beaker was then drained, revealing a nugget of pure gold. With a knowing smile, he handed it to Gumm: “Here, get that tooth fixed.” The filling was always a talking point. Gumm remembered Mr Percival as a brilliant teacher – and surely a very generous conjurer. n Read my next Strange Tale – Granny Christmas – in the December Link.

Successful company to light up the skies on November 4 ONE of the UK’s most successful firework companies will light up the skies above both sides of the River Mersey for this year’s November 4th celebrations - with a specially commissioned musical display in Liverpool and Wirral. Titanium Fireworks are the team behind acclaimed national events including the Mayor of London’s New Year’s Eve party, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, the launch of Hull’s City of Culture year, the opening ceremony for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Adele finale show at Wembley Stadium in June this year. They are set to take the helm of River of Light on Sunday 4th November and are already planning a never-before-seen display on the River Mersey. Tens of thousands of people are expected to line the waterfront in
Liverpool and New Brighton for the free spectacle, which will act as the finale for the China Dream season, part of the city’s 2018 cultural programme. Fireworks will be set off from the water’s edge and from huge barges floating on the Mersey, and will be accompanied by a soundtrack played from key areas and venues along the waterfront. In Liverpool, there will be a series of arts installations themed around the five elements that underpin Chinese philosophy: water, fire, earth, metal and wood. In Wirral, the event will be held in New Brighton with entertainment for all the family including the appearance of ghostly pirates on the Black Pearl. Entertainment is due to start at 5pm, with the main display starting at 6.30pm.

LIVERPOOL’S two fireworks displays will pay tribute to the armed forces this year, as the November 5 theme is ‘Salute to the Services’. Taking place at Sefton and Newsham Parks, the free illuminations both start at 7.30pm and will be synchronised to inspiring music related to the Services. The playlist for Wednesday evening includes Crown Imperial, Hearts of Oak, The Dambusters, I Vow to Thee My Country, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory. Liverpool’s Assistant Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “These displays are always hugely popular, with around 40,000 people enjoying the fireworks across both parks last year. “We want everyone to enjoy November 5, yet be safe at the same time, and organised displays are a great way to achieve this. “It’s wonderful that this event can be part of the city’s World War One commemorations and I’m sure the soundtrack will add an emotional element to the
evening.” For the first time, Heart North West will be the media partner for the event, and Heart Breakfast presenters Joel Ross and Lorna Bancroft will be hosting the display at both parks. Joel Ross said: “We are delighted to be working with Culture Liverpool at two of their firework displays, at Sefton Park and Newsham Park, this year. “Since launching Heart North West in May, we have loved waking up the people of Liverpool and it’s exciting to be involved in such a great event. “ Lorna and I are really looking forward to hosting the display at Sefton Park and saying hello to lots of our listeners.” Visitors to the displays are advised to travel on foot or use public transport, leaving plenty of time to travel to the event. For travel information visit www. merseytravel.gov.uk. There is limited accessible parking at Croxteth Drive, Sefton Park and Gardners Drive at Newsham Park.

Fighting fit and ready to put my heart back into my work HEY guys and welcome to my November issue of Life ‘n’ Style! Ohhh well how bad have I felt over the past few weeks?!! From tonsilitis to food poisoning I’ve literally spent the whole month in bed!! Being the workaholic I am, I have hated every minute of it. I’ve missed so many events and my best friend has been Netflix! Well I’m back fit and well now and ready to put my heart and soul back into work, fashion and getting back on the social scene. At the moment, I am all about nice makeup, skin and feeling the best I can. I get messages all the time asking what foundation I use because my skin looks flawless. I put this down to drinking as much water as I can, monthly crystal-clear facials at Renaissance Beauty Salon in Prescot and a little bit of help from makeup.
If you’re looking for a bit of a casual look I wore this Nude Cord Shirt Dress from Missguided (£28.00) for a little mid-week drink. It’s one of those dresses you can dress up with heels as I did or wear with flats or over jeans for a more casual look.
I love a bit of Monochrome so loved it when I got gifted this Black Stripe Bat Wing Frill Hem Playsuit from Pretty Little Thing. It was £18.00 but is currently on sale for £12.00. Sometimes when you get black and white fabrics they tend to be a little bit see through or flimsy but this is nice and thick. I teamed mine with a pair of over the knee boots and was ready to go!!!!
At the moment, I love the Nars Natural Radiant Longwear foundation in Barcelona (£35.00). This is a nice beigey colour which works well with most skin tones. I also use their concealer for under my eyes in colour custard (£24.00). This is perfect for hiding any bags and uneven skin tones and gives a really fresh look. I always finish off with Mac Prep+ Prime Fix Spray (£19.00) which seals the products and gives your skin a nice finish.

What mindset do you have? WHAT type of ‘mindset’ do you have? A fixed mindset or a growth mindset? If you’re unfamiliar with these terms allow me to explain: If you have a fixed mindset it means that you see yourself as the ‘finished product’ (someone who can’t change or can’t be ‘improved’). If you have a growth mindset It means that you see yourself as a ‘work in progress’ (someone who can change and can be ‘improved’). Most people I talk to would describe themselves as having a growth mindset. And for many, this is indeed true…….at least in some areas of their life. But very few people actually use this mindset in all areas of their life. Some are in great shape but struggle being a parent or partner or in their career. Some are great being a parent and partner and have
a great career but struggle to stay in shape (and have no time for friends or a social life). In the past I know I’ve had some pretty disappointing times in my life but one thing I did years ago was to invest in an NLP practitioner course – the most powerful course I have ever done. It’s certainly helped me throughout the years and has helped me get to where I am today. So my advice to you is if there’s something that you want in life and there’s
someone out there who can help you get it then don’t be afraid to invest in them (even if it’s not me!). Because none of us is the finished article………. If you DO think that I’m the man for the job and you DO want me to help you with your goals, confidence and weight loss etc, then please get in touch with me and we’ll have a chat...

CELEBRITY ARTICLE
www.liverpoollink.co.uk
Celebrity article – Marty Kristian By Tim Saunders TALENTED Marty Kristian is known the world over for being a founder member of The New Seekers vocal harmony group, which enjoyed enormous worldwide success in the early ‘70s. The New Seekers’ biggest hit was ‘I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing in Perfect Harmony’ which reached number one across the globe, selling in excess of 7.5m copies. The group appeared in front of Her Majesty the Queen at The Royal Command Performance. They represented the UK in the Eurovision song contest in 1972 with their hit ‘Beg Steal Or Borrow’ and came second. Regulars on BBC1 Top of the Pops, The New Seekers were household names, performing on all the variety shows of the day including the legendary Morecambe & Wise Christmas Special. The band toured all over the world and were even invited to sing at President Nixon’s inauguration in America. “We appeared on all the big US TV shows Including the Sonny & Cher show, Ed Sullivan, Andy Williams, Johnny Carson” recalls Marty. They had numerous number 1 and top 10 hits totalling 36 million sales and Marty wrote some album tracks including ‘You Make Me Feel Like a Woman’ and ‘Country Lovin’. After leaving school Marty trained to be
an architect at Melbourne University. “After quitting architecture during the second year of the degree course I spent six months as a draughtsman before embarking on a pop singing solo career. In 1968 I was offered a cruise to England as an entertainer and it was here that I met Keith Potger after the Seekers had disbanded. He asked me to join as a member of the New Seekers.” Marty had always liked painting and drawing and “architecture seemed a good idea because it was both creative and socially useful. But I didn’t really enjoy the course so that when at the end of my first year my mother was taken ill and the bills started piling up it wasn’t a very hard decision to pack it in and take a job”. In the ‘90s he was commissioned to paint a series of murals at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital
Road safety award for MP MEMBER of Parliament for West Derby, Stephen Twigg, has been awarded the Brake and Direct Line Group Parliamentarian Award for September, for his efforts to improve road safety near schools. Stephen’s campaigning efforts were inspired by the story of Bobby Colleran, a six year old boy who was killed outside Blackmoor Park school in 2014. Bobby’s parents created the Bobby Colleran Trust and developed the idea of ‘Bobby Zones’ to improve the safety of school children, and ensure that other parents do not have to suffer similar tragedies.
Bobby Zones are areas around schools with a maximum speed limit of 20mph and where there is no parking or dropping off allowed. Stephen has been working with Bobby’s parents to help implement Bobby Zones across the north-west. He led a debate at Westminster Hall in September, asking the Roads Minister Jesse Norman to support the introduction of Bobby Zones across the UK and wining agreement that the Department for Transport would consider such a policy as part of the ongoing Cycling and Walking safety review.
PHOTO OF THE MONTH: “Mersey Gateway” by Ian Kemp, one of our South Liverpool Photographic Society members lucky enough to have a drone!
in London. “The unveiling was a special occasion and I was honoured to accompany The Queen Mother on a guided tour at the opening ceremony.” Today, Marty does cruise talks and the occasional PowerPoint presentation at functions and Women’s Institute meetings. His most recent project has been introducing the world to The Adventures of Walt ‘n Matilda, his new children’s book. The first story in the series is The Black Stump, written and illustrated by him. It tells the tale of a couple of koalas and their search for a funfair. Educational and with Australianisms throughout, it is dedicated to Marty’s granddaughter, Liberty . n For more information visit https:// waltandmatilda.co.uk/
Colemans Building – a letter to the editor Dear Editor I have just read the article in the October edition of South Liverpool LNK and looked at the image of the Colemans building. I would like to congratulate the company/developer that recognised not only its historical value but the beauty of its original facade, and for the sympathetic renovation. It looks amazing. I passed this building every day walking to school [St Georges, Mill Street, which has long gone]. I was also, as a teenager, present in 1981 when the riots took place. It gives me great pleasure and admiration to see such a beautiful building restored/ renovated. Again, an excellent job, thank you. Gary Editor’s reply/note Yes, what a magnificent photograph of this famous local landmark. It was courtesy of Trevor
Roberts, South Liverpool Photographic Society (SLPS). Thank you, Gary, for taking the time to write in and many thanks to Trevor Roberts for this great photo. See our What’s on page for details of SLPS meetings. Moira Hesketh – Editor

A car sure to turn heads By Tim Saunders
WHEN revolutionary motorised transport was introduced in the late 19th century a whole industry was created that continues in the UK to this day. Throughout its history change has been a key factor in order to progress, ranging from design and performance to emissions. There continue to be challenges too. The current key ones being the joys of Brexit and concerns about diesel emissions. Since the turn of the millennium the SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) has become increasingly popular thanks mainly to the hugely popular BMW X5; the only luxury SUV for years – the 4x4 Range Rover is in an altogether different league as testified by the Royal Family’s reliance on them. It was therefore time for a new challenger. Enter the Jaguar F Pace... Think of a standard Jaguar XF saloon, raise it to the height of a Land Rover and add a slightly revised backend and All Wheel Drive. Head on it is striking thanks
to its massive grille. It’s a good looking, well-rounded, futuristic vehicle and there are some neat touches, shared with other Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) siblings including the rising dial of the 8-speed automatic gearbox and the electrically operated tow bar. Inside it’s fitted with cream leather and brown wood effect making for pleasant surroundings. An electric cover reveals the panoramic tilting glass roof, which lets huge amounts of light into the cabin; a real difference on a dull day. The 10-way electrically operated front seats are comfortable and my wife does
like the fact that the front ones are heated, too. However, once the engine is switched off it forgets that you have put them on and you have to do it again using the touchscreen on the dash. On parking the Jag I forget that I have left the roof tilted and the roofline hides the fact that it is open so I think I’ve shut it until the following morning. It takes me a couple of days to realise that this sunroof also slides. This occurs in many a modern vehicle in contrast to the whole hour I can listen to the radio, with the engine off, in my ageing Ford Fiesta. The model tested is the
2-litre diesel which is delivering around 38mpg. It costs a shade under £50,000. There is plenty of space throughout including a very well sized boot making it a practical proposition for executives and their families. The layout of the electronic speedometer and rev counter is confusing with the rev counter generally taking centre stage (it seems to change places with the speedo – not sure if my children are to blame for this) and I feel as if I’m losing my marbles... For street cred there are few vehicles that have as much cache as this big cat. It is nice to see that Porsche Cayenne drivers can’t resist double taking as they savour its more attractive looks. n Facts at a glance: F-PACE Portfolio 2.0D AWD Price: £47,115 on the road Top speed: 129mph 0-60mph: 8.2secs Power: 180bhp Economy: 38mpg Watch the videos at www. testdrives.biz

Dog of the month – Hunter HUNTER is an 18 month old, bouncy Patterdale Terrier, and it’s not often you’ll see a ginger one! He loves to play and has bags of energy, so is looking for a family with an active lifestyle that can keep up with him. He has a sweet and friendly nature and loves to say hello to people when he’s out on walkies. Hunter gets along well with other dogs and seems to enjoy their company very much. He isn’t fully housetrained but he has been toileting on puppy pads, so it shouldn’t take him long to progress. He would benefit from some basic training, as he’s a bright boy. Hunter can live with children aged 16 and over, as he
can nip when he’s excited! n Dog Trust Merseyside Call 0300 303 0292 8am to 8pm Mon-Fri and 9am-5pm Sat and Sun www.dogstrust.org.uk
Cats of the month – Minkie & Cornflower Minkie (mum) and Cornflower (kitten). Minkie is timid and had lived all of her life in a garden in Halewood, giving birth outside in all weathers, until her rescue. Now spayed, micro-chipped, de-flead and wormed, she remains a rather timid cat but in the right home we feel that she will settle down. She has long hair and a beautifully bushy tail. As she has had all of her kittens removed
from her in the past we think it would be only right if she was allowed to keep one of her latest litter, meet the stunningly beautiful Cornflower. She is black, long haired, about 5 months old and incredibly playful. Could you be the person to give them the home they deserve? For adoption enquiries please also contact us. Please call our Rescue on 0151 494 0470 or 07745 167170.

SOUTH Liverpool FC have qualified for the pre-season Bill Weight Trophy on four previous occasions (as first, second and third division champions) but had never won the tournament. However it was a case of fifth time lucky with a 1-0 win over local rivals Hale in the final at Ashville.A first half goal from skipper Cameron Dalton was enough to take the trophy. South are in the process of rebuilding the squad after losing a host of senior players in the close season and currently have a mid-table place in the West Cheshire League first division with a great 3-1 win over Maghull with goals from Cameron Dalton, Danny Bulayima and Sharif Yusuf. However there have been defeats to Maghull ,Mossley Hill and Newton, all of whom are contenders for the title this season. The team have made progress in the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup with a penalty shoot out win over Liverpool Premier league Alder after a 2-2
