Work on The International Centre for Shared Reading gets underway at Calderstones Mansion THE Reader is delighted to announce that work to redevelop the Grade II-listed Calderstones Mansion House has begun. Hoardings and scaffolding have been erected around the building at the heart of the park as builders from John Turner Construction Group arrive on site to complete the multimillion-pound project which will transform the Mansion House into The Reader’s International Centre for Shared Reading. The charity, which aims to get great literature into the hands of people who need it most, has been based in Calderstones Park since September 2014 and has secured major funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, Liverpool City Council and private funders to bring the Mansion House back to life as a community hub built on reading and well-being activity. Phase One of this ambitious project was completed in 2015 with the opening of the much– loved children’s literature centre, The Storybarn, and The Reader Ice Cream Parlour, a new social

I am always on the lookout for ‘nice’ or informative local articles and please try and keep them brief so as I can fit as much as possible in for you all. By the way, just a reminder that publicising the opening of a shop, for example, is not news, it is advertising, so if you would like to advertise your business then please call us for information. Now is probably a good time to say THANK YOU! Thank you to all the people who work so hard to make South Liverpool LINK possible. Special thanks to Dawn, Carol and Colette for all your assistance. Thank you to all our advertisers who are vital to the production of The LINK magazines and without whom we wouldn’t be able to deliver to so many homes, supermarkets, businesses, etc. Huge thanks to everyone at studio for putting this all together – and being so tolerant! A massive thanks too to our distribution team – the ones who deliver The LINK to you come hail, rain and snow. Thank you very much also to all our contributors who are now too numerous to mention but especially to Stephen Guy who has been writing his wonderful, ever popular, history articles for The LINK since we produced our very first ever A4 LINK back in 2006. Finally, of course, a big thank you to all our readers for your positive feedback and for supporting our advertisers. Well, I hope you all enjoy the new look South Liverpool LINK and I will see you all next month. Moira

Fishermen’s friends By Stephen Guy

THE coastline between Otterspool and Hale is popular with visitors for its fresh air and spectacular views. Massive investment has resulted in a much cleaner Mersey estuary with increasing wildlife. Many fishing families once made a living along this coast with its coves and pools where otters also hunted for fish. Fishing was big business on the Mersey 300 years ago. Thomas Patten of Bank Hall, Warrington, wrote in 1697: “Vast numbers of salmon are taken so as to supply all the country and market towns 20 miles around. “When the country is cloyed, or when they cannot get sale of them, they give them to their swine.” A sports fisherman could catch three or four salmon a week off Speke at this time. Patten regretted the vast numbers of fish being taken, already making an impact on herring: “Our fishermen have mercy on none they can catch. All are fish that come to their net and none safe they can lay their hands on.” There was once a fish market at the end of Liverpool’s Chapel Street – in those days, long before the docks, it was natural shoreline. Fish and other cargoes were unloaded after vessels were beached on the shore. A fish market also stood at High Cross near the Town Hall. In 1764 the market moved to Derby Square and then, more than 20 year later, to James Street. From 1823 until comparatively modern times the fish market was in Great Charlotte Street adjacent to St John’s Market. The coastline between Toxteth and Garston was obliterated as Liverpool’s expansion created demands for land and somewhere to dump its rubbish. Knott’s Hole (pictured) was a sheltered cove destroyed about

a century ago as the coast was developed. The tops of rocky cliffs can still be seen alongside Riverside Drive. A new shoreline replaced the natural landscape which had attracted artists and visitors wishing to escape into the natural environment. The Otterspool coastal park commemorated the stretch of water named after the once populous mammals. Banker John Moss, who gave his name to Liverpool’s Moss Street, helped develop Otterspool. He built an oil mill and embankments to give direct access to his factory. Moss later became one of the backers of the pioneering Liverpool to Manchester Railway. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10am to 5pm every day, admission free.

Local teacher tells budding authors to ‘bee-lieve’ in themselves after seeing his first insect-inspired book in print

LET’S Ride Liverpool is set to return to the city this September following last year’s success. Five kilometres of city centre roads will be closed off to traffic to give thousands of locals the opportunity to explore on two wheels. There’ll be a strong community focus this year which will see bike shops, local performers and giveaways along the route. The free festival will take place on Sunday 23rd September.

The 52-year-old recalled: “One day I found it, re-read it and typed it out.  “I drew my own rough  illustrations and read it to the children in school.  They all seemed to enjoy it.” A chance meeting with renowned Liverpool author, Jude Lennon, who was visiting Banks Road School, led to Shaun getting his work published. He explained: “She was very supportive and put me in touch with Sue Miller of Team Author UK. “Then in February 2018 it was published. Seeing it in print is one

of the most special moments I’ve had – I couldn’t stop smiling!” And the children at Banks Road are thrilled to see their teacher’s work in print with many of them dressing up as Arthur Bee for World Book Day. Now Shaun is busy penning his next book and has encourages other budding authors: “Don’t let anybody put you off or put your work down. BEE-LIEVE in yourself!” n Arthur Bee Has a Secret is available on Amazon and from Nowhere Books Shop, Bold Street and Write Blend Book Shop in Waterloo, priced £7.99.

I was just trying to find a scenario that my son could relate to.” After writing the story many years ago, Shaun put it away in the attic until he re-discovered it recently. THERE is a buzz of excitement at Banks Road Primary School in Garston. For one of the school’s teachers has just published his first insect-inspired book! Entitled Arthur Bee Has A Secret, the book tells the tale of a little bee with a secret that he’s too embarrassed to talk about. It’s a secret that bees aren’t expected to have, and the whole beehive is affected. How will Queen Bee react when she finds out Arthur’s secret? Arthur Bee was created by Shaun Millea, who was inspired to put pen to paper after his son’s experience with hay fever. The father of two, from Halewood, explained: “My son is now 23 but when he was seven he couldn’t go anywhere near a field or flower without having an awful reaction.  It got so bad that he even ended up at A&E – unable to

Recover furniture instead of buying new By Simon Booth IN THIS throw-away age that we live in it easy to buy new, cheap furniture. However, the items you already own are normally of a better quality than their replacements. An old chair or settee that is re-covered can also offer you more choice with exactly what you do with it and if you throw in a change to the colour of the woodwork it can be totally

reinvented. Also consider the green view and any sentimental reasons for keeping hold of your existing furniture and it adds up to a really good option. Add to this the fact that you won’t need to leave your home and trail around furniture stores as you can normally choose fabrics etc. in the comfort of your own home and you have no concerns about having to dispose of your old suite. More hope for rough sleepers

LIVERPOOL City Council has unveiled plans to transform a temporary night shelter into a full-time facility, which would help rough sleepers all year round. The £3.5million project would mean the land opposite Labre House, a temporary winter shelter on Camden Street, would be transformed into a fourstorey lifestyle hub including accommodation, support services, training and even employment opportunities. If all goes to plan the application for the new centre will be submitted in the summer.

Istanbul Barbecue and Bistro By Peter Hesketh

LOCATED in the heart of Woolton Village, Istanbul Barbecue and Bistro certainly does live up to its promise to bring a taste of Turkey to Liverpool and is something of a hidden gem. Open from 9am to 11pm every day and featuring breakfast, lunch and evening menus, Moira and I decided to have a midweek evening meal there recently and we were most certainly not disappointed……! Owner Guven has had many years of experience in all aspects of the catering business and the restaurant really is Guven and partner Ilona’s pride and joy. Their passion is abundantly evident and ‘Istanbul’ is run as a family business with all staff treated like family. We arrived at 8pm and were shown immediately to our table by the friendly and attentive staff and what is instantly striking about this cosy, atmospheric eaterie is the intimate Turkish/ Mediterranean ambiance. The décor, lighting and music all evoke images of Turkey and we have

a good look through the menu while quaffing a nice glass of Turkish beer (Efes) and eating the accompanying Turkish bread (served with a choice of garlic butter or a lovely carrot, onion and potato purée). Then we notice that all the cooking is done on an open charcoal barbecue which is in full view and this simply adds to the atmosphere and ambiance. There is an extensive choice of starters (cold meze, hot meze, meze platters) and main courses and the menu caters amply for vegetarians and those with other dietary requirements. For starters, I opted for the Kalamar

Dolmasi (calamari tubes stuffed with feta cheese and parsley) and it is absolutely delicious! What I like most about calamari, when cooked properly, is the texture and it’s no exaggeration to say that this is probably the best calamari I have ever had. Moira chose the Chicken Souvlaki (marinated skewered chicken) with salad and cacik (yoghurt). She is equally impressed! For our mains, I ordered the Tandir Kebab (boneless lamb marinated with Turkish spices and herbs, slow cooked and served with Istanbul’s special tomato sauce) – with half portions of rice and chips for good measure – and, again, it is absolutely superb. Generous portions of tender, delicious lamb which barely need a knife taking to them and the sauce is to die for. Moira decided upon the Tavuk Kus Konmaz (generous portions of marinated chicken breast, oven baked and served with a delicious asparagus sauce). Wonderful! We’re both quite partial to a glass of red wine with our main course when

we dine out and the staff happily and expertly advise us about Turkish wines. I prefer a more full-bodied red (a lovely glass of Kalecak Karasi) and Moira prefers a lighter, more fruity red (a glass of Ephesus) which I am assured is exactly to her taste. One of our fellow diners on a nearby table is clearly celebrating a birthday and Guven and staff all join in and sing ‘happy birthday’ to her (in Turkish, of course!). The portions are sufficiently generous that Moira decided against a dessert but I managed to tuck away a Berry Sundae which I have to say was, er, berry nice! The bill (excluding the drinks) came to only £45, which is incredible value. So: great ambiance, great food, great owner and staff, great prices – a great night and we will certainly be going again in the very near future. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed! A traditional and authentic eaterie SITUATED at the junction of Hanover Street and Duke Street, Bistro Franc is just on the fringe of the ‘Liverpool One’ Shopping Centre. The two-storey restaurant is located within Church House, the previous home of the Archbishop of Liverpool, and the décor is of a classic rustic French theme. The wooden chairs and tables, exposed brickwork, candles and walls smattered with prints by French artists all combine to create a traditional and authentic ambiance. The warm, inviting and relaxed service is accompanied by a fresh and daily changing selection of “entrees” and “plats de resistance” as well as a variety of mouth-watering Mediterranean dishes. The menus change daily to make use of fresh market produce and this adds to the vibrancy and spontaneity of this bustling inner-city restaurant.

10 tips for looking after your feet YOUR feet take the weight of your whole body, so foot problems can quickly lead to discomfort and affect the way you walk. This can in turn cause knee, hip and back pain. Here are 10 tips from the College of Podiatry. Wash your feet often Keep them clean by washing them every day in warm soapy water, but don’t soak them, as this might destroy your skin’s natural oils. Dry your feet well Dry your feet thoroughly after washing them, especially between the toes which is where fungal infections such as athlete’s foot can develop. Moisturise and file If your skin is dry, apply moisturising cream all over the foot, except for between the toes. Gently remove hard skin and calluses with a pumice stone or foot file. Cut toenails carefully Trim your toenails by cutting straight across, never at an angle or down the edges. This can cause ingrown toenails. Shoe shop in the afternoon

Your feet swell as the day goes on and if shoes fit in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest, you can be assured they will always be comfortable. Footwear tips for work If you have to wear heels at work, wear comfortable shoes to and from the office and only wear heels once you’re in the office. Also, try to vary the heel height. Limit time wearing high heels Wear high heels and pointed shoes for special occasions only, and always wear the right shoes for the job. Change your socks often Change your socks daily to keep your feet fresh and avoid any nasty odours. Watch out for foot bugs in communal changing areas Wear flip-flops to avoid catching athlete’s foot and verrucas when you use public areas. Take care with flip flops Flip flops don’t provide support for your feet and can give you arch and heel pain if you wear them too much. CREDIT: NHS

Skin Cancer awareness

SKIN Cancer is the most common cancer in the UK with more people dying from it here ever year than in Australia. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and we have these tips to help you know what to look out for. Check moles frequently for changes to: n Symmetry – The two sides don’t look the same. n Border – Irregular border, edges may be blurred or jagged. n Colour – Uneven colour with more than one shade.

n Size – Large, usually at least the size of the end of a pencil. Also check for: n A new growth or sore that doesn’t heal. n A spot, mole or sore that itches or hurts. n A mole or growth that bleeds, crusts or scabs. If you notice any of these signs, see your GP. If you know anyone who has any of these symptoms, insist they see their doctor.

Springwood House 4 Rose Lane Mossley Hill, L18 5ED

IN 1585 Queen Elizabeth sent letters to three members of the gentry – Bold, Norris and Molyneux – instructing them to report on the state of her Courthouse in West Derby. They reported back that the court was in such bad condition that hearings had to be held in the adjacent chapel “which disturbeth divine service”. The present courthouse was built in 1586 on the orders of the queen, who slashed the proposed budget from £60 to £40! Standing in the centre of West Derby Village and hardly bigger than a double garage, the sandstone structure is of local and national importance. This is the former manor court where members of the powerful Molyneux family once sat in judgment. When it was built there were just seven streets in Liverpool, clustered around the castle. As well as being the only freestanding post-medieval courthouse in Britain, it is Liverpool’s oldest nonecclesiastical public building. West Derby Courthouse was

not a court in the modern sense – there were originally no lawyers and the squire acted as steward. The Courthouse represents a vanished way of life before Britain became a property-owning democracy. When it was built about 50 wealthy families – most of them royalty or aristocracy – owned England. There was probably a courthouse in Saxon times. If this was the one described in 1585, it had the same dimensions as the Tudor rebuild. The Molyneuxes – along with the Stanleys – owned Liverpool and much of Lancashire. Later created Earls of Sefton, the Molyneux family were also responsible for law and order and were successively constables of both West Derby and Liverpool Castles. At this court they dealt with land and financial issues relating to their vast properties. They also dealt with people accused of petty offences. The only punishments meted out were fines or up to six hours in the stocks. The court last sat in 1910 and is now Grade II*-listed. It was refurbished in 2005 following a campaign by the West Derby Society, which supervises visits.

Photo of the month – Cathedral Walk by Mike McWade MIKE has been a member of South Liverpool Photographic Society for 28 years! Mike told The LINK “I had just bought a canon 15mm full frame fisheye and decided to go to the Cathedral to try it out. “I hadn’t been there long and was taking some shots outside when I saw this lady coming towards me from my right. She was walking quite quickly and was wearing a red coat. “I managed to get two or three

shots as she walked alongside the Cathedral. My image, I think, portrays the power of the Cathedral in relation to a single figure. The fisheye lens conveys that power.” Wow! Another fantastic photo from SLPS – a modern twist on an iconic building. SLPS meets every Thursday at CADWA, Rocky Lane, L16 1JD from 7.45pm. For details see LINK What’s On pages.

Essential gas maintenance works on Speke Road BALFOUR Beatty will be undertaking essential gas main renewal works on behalf of Cadent Gas on the inbound (citybound) carriageway of Speke Road, between the junction with The Aerodrome / New Mersey Shopping Park and Banks Road. This will result in an inbound lane restriction that will remain in place permanently until the works are completed,

which is expected to be in approximately six weeks. Road-users are advised to expect extended journey times and to seek alternative routes where appropriate. The works form part of a £77.5m investment by Cadent Gas to upgrade approximately 500km of gas mains pipes across the North West region. Call 0161 703 1110 for further information.

Mirror, mirror on the wall Strange Tale – By Anton Valdemart WAR loomed and so did Algernon’s retirement – he had spent more than 40 years with the same shipping company, rising to be senior clerk. He was not an ambitious man and took each day as it came. He was popular and now it was time to go. Algernon decided to mark the first day of retirement sorting through accumulated junk that filled the old family home. The attic was crammed with old manner of things, some discarded back in his grandparents’ time. He had never liked the mirror which originally hung in his father’s study. Algernon was so upset as a child that it had been hidden away. It was the story of the queen who stared into the looking glass and asked the mystifying question: “Mirror, mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all?” Young Algernon had nightmares after hearing the story. He was too distressed to even go into the same room as the mirror. The boy calmed down once it was removed – strangely, it was only this mirror which affected him. Now, more than half a century later, he was looking at it once more. He found the relic propped up in a dark corner, facing the wall.

Algernon turned it round and laughed to himself: fancy being scared of an old mirror. To prove how things had changed, he returned the long-banished item to its original place on the study wall. Late one night, Algernon was catching up with the evening paper news. The clock struck midnight. He put the newspaper down, got up from his comfortable chair and was startled to see an eerie glow coming from the mirror. Algernon looked into the battered glass, at first noticing nothing strange. Then he suddenly realised – HE COULD NOT SEE HIS

REFLECTION. Instead there was a ghostly mist filling the mirror before, slowly, a face emerged. Algernon was astonished to see it was himself as a young man. He was dressed in the fashion of the 1870s – even wearing the silk tie given to him as a birthday present by Estelle, his lost love. Tears welled up in Algernon’s eyes as his young self looked at him intently. Deeper into the mirror there were shady forms – he recognised several. One was his school friend Lionel who had been killed in a boating accident. Another was school teacher Mr Lindsay who keeled over and died while playing bowls. “We want you to join us,” said young Algernon, indicating the others and extending his hand. “It is peaceful here and nothing ever changes – it is a world where everything stays the same. For eternity.” Later two men were standing in the study. “Such a tragedy,” said the policeman to his colleague. “So soon after his retirement.” Looking at the figure sprawled on the carpet under splinters of glass, he added: “This heavy mirror should not have been hung on such a small hook.” n Read my next Strange Tale – Judgement Day – in the June Link.

Try something different with the new Dior make up range HEY guys and welcome to May’s issue of Life’n’Style! How amazing is our new glossy magazine, can I just say big congratulations and well done to our editor Moira on all the fabulous changes!

If you’re looking to try some new make up for the Spring then I would thoroughly recommend trying out the new Dior range – I’ve fallen in love with all their products! I’ve been using the DiorSkin Forever Undercover Foundation in number 030 which was a great colour for me and had just the right amount of coverage. This is priced at £34.00 and comes in 24 shades. I’m also a really big fan of the DiorSkin Nude Air Luminizer Glow Addict. This is a holographic sculpting powder that is ideal for day or night. It’s priced at £42.00 and comes with its own brush.

I was invited along to the opening of a new coffee bar and members lounge, The Royal Institution, recently and wore this Black Crepe Sleeveless Keyhole Wide Leg Jumpsuit for £25.00 from www.prettylittlething.com. I love jumpsuits, I just think they are so easy to wear and are figure flattering at the same time.

Another little Spring number I wore recently is this Dusky Pink Gold Button Blazer Dress, also for £25.00 from www.prettylittlething. com. I teamed mine with a pair of denim over the knee boots from www.ego.co.uk and a bit of jewellery. The thing about these blazer dresses is that you can wear them as a dress then once you are fed up with them you can wear them again as a blazer with jeans. If pink isn’t your colour then maybe go for a darker colour. I wore this Black Gold Button Detail Blazer Dress for LMI Liverpool on Saturday. This one has got a slightly more fitted style than the pink and has got lovely gold button detailing. It’s one of those outfits that are quite easy and comfortable to wear but dressy at the same time. I paired mine with a pair of over the knee boots from Kurt Geiger, a Just Cavalli bag from

www.veryexclusive.co.uk and a black choker. If you are looking to try out some new strip eyelashes then there is a really good brand on Instagram called @blinkyboolashes or the website is www.blinkyboolashes.com they stock a good range of luxury 3D silk and mink eyelashes priced around £7/£9 each. I have a 15 per cent discount code available for all my lovely readers. Simply enter Jade15 at the checkout and the discount will be added to your order. That’s it from me but I will be back next month with a Holiday Shop feature. Love Jade x

BAILEY is an affectionate lad who loves nothing more than to give out bear hugs! He has such a sweet personality and he loves to be out and about exploring. In fact, as he’s so active, he would make a great companion for anyone who enjoys long walks. Bailey can be a little nervous when he first meets people but it doesn’t take long for him to come around and make friends. Bailey doesn’t enjoy getting too close to other dogs, but he will happily walk with quieter ones that won’t pay him too much attention. He would benefit from positive encounters with calm, well behaved dogs as this may help his own confidence. He is quite strong when he’s on his lead so would benefit from some loose lead training which we have started at the rehoming centre, to make it more enjoyable for all involved! He has found himself at he centre through no fault of his own and would thrive in a home with children aged 16 and over. If you think Bailey could be

£2,500 fine for not buckling up pets

ALMOST two thirds of drivers in the UK don’t realise you could be fined if you don’t restrain your pet while driving. If you’re caught with your pet loose in the car, not only could your insurance be invalid, but you could face a fine of up to £2,500 and nine points on your licence for driving without due care and attention.

CELEBRITY ARTICLE

Celebrity article – Bernie Taupin By Tim Saunders

ELTON John’s lyricist/cosongwriter Bernie Taupin has lived in America since 1992. His 30-acre ranch in California is now on the market with a view to bringing his children up in a different part of America. Buying his ranch enabled him to become a cowboy: “My heroes in life are cowboys” the retired rodeo champion told the Daily Telegraph. “ When I grew up in England in the ‘50s and ‘60s we all played cowboys and Indians and watched westerns on TV and it entranced me”. It was while living in Lincolnshire – where his younger brother Kit was born - that Bernie became obsessed with cowboy movies. “I was intoxicated by the myth of the west. The music I listened to – Johnny Cash and the like – the films I watched, even the history I was interested in: I wanted to live like a cowboy”. When Elton has a new album in mind he contacts Bernie who

then spends a few weeks writing lyrics. Bernie then emails them to Elton. “I used to fax them” he said. “It took a long time to drag this guy into the 21st century!” But Elton does now have an iPad and a computer. Elton has only ever visited Bernie in America once. They famously never write songs in the same room. Being apart, he says, has contributed to their success because they are not around each other long enough to get bored or frustrated. He doubts that they will ever retire.

Painting now occupies 80 per cent of Bernie’s time with his works selling for up to £16,000. He also produces a twice weekly radio programme. All the music he plays is from his own collection of 15,000 albums which he started collecting while living at Elton’s mother’s house in Pinner. During this time, when he shared a bunk-bed with Elton, Bernie was earning £5 a week while Elton received £10 because he sang. This wealth divide has continued. Today, Bernie is worth $70m (£52m) according to TheRichest.com while Elton is worth $500m (£370m), according

to CelebrityNetWorth.com. The duo is celebrating 50 years of success. It all started for Bernie when he answered an advertisement in the New Musical Express aged 17. Until this point he had a succession of jobs including a traineeship in the print room of his local weekly newspaper. He left and turned to dancing, playing snooker and drinking. Elton John had also answered the same advert. Neither Bernie nor Elton passed their auditions but their talents were recognised and they were put in touch with each other. And so in 1969 the first Elton John album was released featuring Bernie’s lyrics and the duo have now worked together on more than 30 albums. Bernie’s lyrics include hits like Tiny Dancer, Nikita and Candle in the Wind. In September 1997, he rewrote the lyrics of Candle in the Wind for Candle in the Wind 1997, a tribute to the late Diana, Princess of Wales. Elton has only made a couple of albums with other lyricists.

Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club – a season review THE month of April has brought some well needed respite for the finely tuned athletes of LSHC. With league games coming to an end, we’ve all had the chance to reflect on the past season. For the entire ladies section, it has been a season filled with fraught efforts and occasional frustrations. The W1s and 2s showed grit, strength and determination, sticking together when needed most, and demonstrating the training squad set-up to be a success. The W3s and 4s, like the rest of the club, struggled with player numbers but persevered and successfully managed to secure places in their respective leagues. And, finally, the W5s “won some, lost some and did ok”. It was a valiant effort for the women. #GirlPower. The men didn’t do too badly either. Firstly, congratulations are due for the M2s who were promoted with games to spare!

be playing in June! The reserves’ chances of winning the second division title have been extinguished with two defeats and conceding a last minute equaliser to Maghull Reserves. Leading 2-1 through goals from David Mee and Adam Shelton with five minutes to go against local rivals Mossley Hill Reserves, the team then conceded two goals. The game against Maghull Reserves saw the team go two goals up through a brace by David Mee but the lead disappeared in the last 10 minutes. The youth team remain on course for a treble in the West Cheshire League having made progress in the league cup with a walkover against Maghull Town and a hard fought 2-1 win over Bootle with second half goals from Curtis Elias and Liam Murphy after ending the first half a goal down. The team have reached the Liverpool County FA Youth Cup final which will be staged at Walton Hall Park on Tuesday 15th May - against Bootle! The team remain in pole position in the youth division although rivals Mossley Hill are nine points behind with three games in hand!

The power of imagination (and why you should be using it)

SOMETIMES when I try and get people or clients to visualise things, they might struggle to actually do so. If this is the case, I’ll ask them about something that has happened in their recent past. As they’re doing this, they’re able to access images from recent events that they have experienced in order for them to explain to me what they’ve recently been up to. When a client has done this, I can then get them to visualise things they want to happen in the near future. Musicians, sports people, entrepreneurs etc, have all used imagination to help them overcome challenges. Golfers have used imagination, for example to help get the perfect shot or round, by first going through it in their mind – no practice needed. Here are five reasons why we should be using imagination today: n It can help you overcome hurdles. As I’ve just mentioned, so many professionals use imagination exercises. Not only that, if you

LIVERPOOL PERSONAL TRAINER

with Paul Coshott think about what you want to achieve or where you want to go, by using imagination, it will help you develop beliefs that whatever you want is going to happen. n Imagination can ignite our passion. We probably spend most of our time stressing about money, bills, jobs, relationships etc, and being in a state of ‘survival’. If we dream about the possibilities of what can happen it will fire up our imagination which in turn will ignite our passions. n Imagination and thoughts create our future. I’m sure we’ve all come across this saying somewhere, but as imagination generates passion, it also gives us energy,

with which changes will occur. “Imagination is everything. It is the preview for life’s coming attractions” – Einstein. n When was the last time you saw a young child play? Kids can turn a cardboard box into a spaceship or create a story with a couple of toys. Watching the world through a child’s eyes can remind us of what imagination can do for us. n Sometimes, reality can get the better of us. The news, social media, newspapers etc, all give out negative information. It’s no wonder people suffer from anxiety and other things these days. If we choose to use our imaginative muscle this helps us to create hope and where there is hope you have the opportunity for transformation and change. FREE Cookbook! Would you like a copy of my first cook book, absolutely free? If so, send me a message at the following email address and I’ll forward it on to you info@liverpoolpersonaltrainer.com

New Subaru Outback exceeds expectations By Tim Saunders

“IT’S too big, I can’t drive it” says my wife when she tries to drive the Subaru Outback. True, it is a large vehicle. But if given the chance it exceeds expectations. Because here we have an estate that boasts a massive boot, large enough (once the retractable cover is removed) for all the stuff that the Saunders family regularly travels with: two pushchairs, travel cot, luggage and lots of food. And there’s still room to change my young son’s nappy. But the great thing is that when behind the wheel the driver forgets that it’s an estate car. This is a thoroughly capable vehicle both on and off road because it is equipped with all symmetrical all-wheel drive. Basically this is as safe as it gets with all the wheels talking to each other and working together to produce a perfect driving experience no matter what the terrain. “I can’t drive this, it’s not a manual” moans my wife. “And where’s the handbrake?” It’s at times like this that Caroline and I are at loggerheads. I try as best I can to point her in the right direction but she refuses to accept these technological changes. Instead of a traditional handbrake there’s an electric one operated at a push of a button. Its seven-speed automatic gearbox can also be driven like a manual thanks to the paddleshifts either side of the steering wheel but this isn’t up Caroline’s street either. Driving in automatic mode the dials have a blue glow but select manual mode and the glow

changes to red. I take the Subaru for a run down the M25 where I see some appalling erratic driving. A Mercedes undercuts at speed a row of crawling traffic in the outside line and then veers in and out of the traffic in a similar fashion to a slalom skier. This is a heart in the mouth stuff. Moments later we pull over for a police car. Was the driver trying to evade them, was he fed up with queues of traffic or was he on drugs? It’s a worry. Britain’s motorways do leave drivers feeling like they are on a conveyor belt; no matter what speed you do it seems impossible to become the car in front – during the day at any rate. The ‘Scooby Doo’ is fitted with an intelligent cruise control which delights in moments like this because it will brake and accelerate itself all the while keeping a set distance behind the car in front. These systems are always too slow for me when it comes to accelerating but I expect this is all in the name of economy. What I do like is that the driver can override by pushing the accelerator to the floor and then once you’re going fast enough you can take your foot off the gas and the system will take over once again.
