IS ANYBODY THERE?

By Stephen Guy

THE invention of the telephone transformed people’s lives but, like every innovation, it was slow developing in practical terms. From the earliest phones in the 1870s, it took about a century before the vast majority had access to the devices. For decades telephones were mostly used for business with a limited number in the home. Most people used call boxes for the rare occasions they needed to phone. Today more people have mobile phones than landlines. Increasing numbers use their mobiles for access to the internet with its wealth of services. At the dawn of telecommunications the system was rudimentary the first Liverpool exchange opened in 1879. Liverpool’s first domestic telephones linked two adjacent residences – Calderstones mansion house (pictured) and Verdala Towers on Allerton Road.

An interview with Jim Broadbent

Strange Tales by Anton Valdemart This was long before the average person knew the existence of telephones, never mind seen one. Early telephone users rarely had to put up with nuisance calls or ominous silences greeted by: “Is anybody there?” There were also no party lines which sometimes meant you couldn’t use the phone because

your neighbour was on the blower. Calderstones and Verdala Towers were occupied by members of the ship owning MacIver family. Charles MacIver senior, a founder of Cunard, lived at Calderstones while his son Charles junior lived at Verdala Towers. The story goes that one night a disgruntled crew member from one of the MacIver ships arrived at Verdala Towers. The man aired his grievances to Charles junior: he offered little sympathy to the employee who then stormed off. The crew member headed for Calderstones to take the issue up with Charles’ father. Charles junior, being an astute judge of human nature, suspected this would happen.

He picked up his newfangled telephone to Calderstones and warned his father to expect a visitor and outlined the circumstances. No sooner had Charles senior put the phone down than the employee arrived with a new version of his tale of woe. At the end of the tirade Charles senior told him: “This does not resemble the tale you told at Verdala Towers ten minutes ago.” The employee, who knew nothing of telephones, is said to have fled into the night convinced the two men were either in league with the devil or experts in telepathy. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10am to 5pm every day, admission free.

Cadets head to Buckingham Palace

A GROUP of four young people age 16-18 representing the Air Cadets in South Liverpool are off to Buckingham Palace in May to receive their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. The group, who had already achieved their bronze and silver awards, have had to undertake a series of challenging tasks over a period of 12 months including a period of volunteering, learning

and demonstrating a new skill, attending residential placement, performing regular physical activities and taking part in two expeditions. Cadet Flight Sergeant Danielle Turner said: “I found the expedition in Snowdon very challenging, but we worked to reach the end as a team. “I have thoroughly enjoyed the experiences and skills I have learned over the

past 12 months and am very excited and proud to receive the award.” This is the first time in 10 years this achievement has been made by members of 7F 90 Squadron, who are based on Woolton Road, close to South Liverpool Treatment Centre. The cadets meet every Monday and Thursday from 7pm to 9.30pm and are open to young people from aged 12.

Sometimes, each of us, or someone we care about, needs support at home. Family owned, family run local business. We provide personalised, bespoke care packages which we create with you to ensure we deliver the service you require. Please call to see if we can help support you, at home.

Banjo and Strawberry Obituary: Sir Ken Dodd Lennon’s Field project join forces By Moira Hesketh

WE at the LINK were deeply saddened, like most people, by the recent death of Sir Ken Dodd. We met Sir Ken at various charity and social functions on numerous occasions in recent years and were always struck by his humility, charity and compassion as much, of course, as by his unique and infectious humour. Peter and I saw him perform at the Philharmonic in December 2016, the day before his knighthood was announced; he was in true hilarious Doddy form and had us all in stitches from start to finish. It felt an honour and privilege to see his ‘Happiness’ show at the time and it feels even more so now. His knighthood was of course richly deserved and long overdue and his sad passing marks the end of an era both here in Liverpool and in British comedy. A true legend. We would like to express our sincerest condolences to Sir Ken’s widow, Lady Anne, and to his family and many friends. Our thoughts are with you at this time and our memories will be with us forever.

THE Salvation Army’s Strawberry Field project will be the official charity partner to the much anticipated new stage show Lennon’s Banjo. Throughout the show’s two-week run, which opens

on April 24 at the Epstein Theatre, there will be a collection at the end of each performance with all monies being donated to the project. Demolition work has already started to redevelop

Strawberry Field, with the final vision resulting in a training hub for young people with learning disabilities, alongside a visitor centre, cafe and public gardens.

Celebrity article: Jim Broadbent By Tim Saunders

THE next film that the internationally acclaimed Oscar winning movie star im roadbent will appear in is Night in Hatton Garden’, due for release this year. The 6’2 star is thought to be playing 75-year-old ohn Collins, who acted as a lookout for the gang who stole 25m of jewellery in the audacious 2015 robbery. The working title production, directed by ames Marsh, also stars other celebrities including Michael Caine, Ray Winstone and Paul Whitehouse. Clad in high-vi jacket and hard hat, im acts as lookout while the gang drill through the vault that holds millions of pounds worth of jewels. To make this particular scene as convincing and realistic as possible it was filmed at night and on location outside the Hatton Garden safe deposit box where the original robbery took place. Many passers-by believed them to be attempting a second heist in the area. I did a real double take when I saw them there in the middle of Hatton Garden an onlooker told the Daily Mirror newspaper. They looked like the men we saw in CCTV images of the robbery . A seventh thief, known

only as asil, has never been found, while 10m worth of the gems is believed to still be missing. The criminals were inspired by experiences from two crimes the infamous 26million rink’s Mat robbery at Heathrow Airport and the 6million Security Express cash robbery in London. oth took place in 1983. An actor for more than four decades, im roadbent has rarely been off our screens since his first foray into the world of films in 1971 with an uncredited role as a spectator at a cricket match. He graduated from drama school a year later. Although both his parents were sculptors they were also keen amateur actors and clearly theirs was a positive influence. In fact, The roadbent Theatre in Wickenby, a converted Lincolnshire church, with its regular schedule of productions, is named after his dad, Roy, who died when im was 22. im is the theatre’s honorary president.

I’ve always been deliberately open to new experiences he told the Daily Telegraph. This appetite for a challenge has seen him enjoy a plethora of different roles throughout his 45 year career including taking to the stage in The Government Inspector’ at the Royal National Theatre. In the 1980s he was approached to play wheelerdealer Derek Trotter in the hit C comedy Only Fools and Horses. ut he couldn’t commit to it and so the role went to David ason. I like to say it was my big contribution to ritish culture he told the Guardian. I would have done one series and it wouldn’t have been particularly successful. And even if it had been successful, I’d have wanted to do something else. And then the world would never have known Only Fools and Horses . Copious amounts of television work followed such as The Peter Principle and The Street while demand for him to take increasingly major roles in films grew.

Strange Tale – By Anton Valdemart

THE castle made its final stand after centuries dominating the town the grim fortress resisted to the last those who brought its stones tumbling to earth. It was 1721 and gangs of workers were struggling to demolish the ancient but formidable walls. Where pickaxes and sledge hammers failed, gunpowder was used to shift the remains of towers and ramparts. Finally Liverpool Castle was reduced to a vast pile of masonry that had to be moved by horse and cart. The discovery was made at the base of the west tower where Adam Almond led a gang of workers shifting rocks and masonry. They came across a pile of rubble beneath a spiral staircase. Moving the debris of stones and mortar was very difficult and they toiled for several hours. At last a hidden door was revealed, covered with metal studs and secured with large iron

bars and an ornate lock. Above the door, carved into the stone lintel, were the mysterious words It is as it is. Adam was pu led and none of the others could decipher the meaning of the enigmatic words. My old teacher will know he’s a great scholar, said Adam. They decided to leave the door until Maximus Temple had arrived from Walton Grammar School. He took one look at the archaic inscription and pronounced That is the personal motto of Edward III who died in 1377. Maximus ordered that the door be left untouched until the mayor and town clerk were summoned as witnesses. Soon there was a large crowd surrounding the door. Maximus pointed to each word of the inscription with his cane Some think it is a message meaning things are as they are and cannot be changed, he said. It could refer to Edward’s claim to the French throne. However, I have another theory it’s about Edward’s father, Edward II, who was given an elaborate funeral at Gloucester Cathedral. He was a weak king, la y and incompetent, who indulged worthless favourites. History records that Edward II was murdered. There are those, like me, who believe the deposed king was spirited away from prison and lived in secret exile. Edward III knew where his father was and visited him. reak the door down, said a gruff voice from the crowd. There might be treasure in there. Several armed militiamen stood guard as the door was forced open. Everyone stepped back as a gust of musty air rushed out of the hidden chamber. They peered inside. Mouldering red banners hung from the ceiling, each embroidered with the words It is as it is in gold letters. Everywhere lay piles of colourful medieval clothing including tunics and hoods. As they watched, the mass of fabric crumbled to dust when the fresh air circulated. A skeleton lay on a rock shelf. Looking around the sombre grotto Maximus declared There is no treasure here but the bones of a king. n Read my next Strange Tale Mirror, Mirror on the Wall - in the May Link.

Dog of the month – Penny Cat of the month – Tiger PENNY is a five-year-old Doberman Cross. She is very playful and loves to chase her carers around the off lead area. She’s looking for a loving family that will give her time to settle in to their routine, and not rush her. She is a little worried about being handled too much, so patience is key whilst she builds her confidence in her new home. Penny gets along well with other dogs but would be best as the only one in the home. Penny is allergic to beef and pork, so needs to be fed carefully. If Penny could be your four-legged friend, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP, 12pm4pm every day except Wednesdays, when it is closed. You can also call on 0300 303 0292, 8am-8pm Mon-Fri and 9am-5pm Sat and Sun. www.dogstrust.org.uk.

TIGER was abandoned on the Rescue’s doorstep and when we found him he was so cold and so frightened. It turned out that he hadn’t been neutered so we got this arranged, had him micro-chipped, de-flead and wormed at our vet. Eventually he settled down and started to relax a bit. And once he realised we weren’t going to hurt him, and our only aim was to keep him comfy, fed, safe and warm from the bitter cold he’d been left in, he slowly started to place in trust in us. He’s become very attached to young Milly Molly Mandy who is now his new best friend and I have to say that she’s doing a fab job of building his self-confidence, so we’re really reluctant to split them up. If you think that you could be the one who could bring out shy Tiger and cope with cheeky Milly Molly Mandy then please call us on 0151 494 0470 or 07745 167170. Or drop us an email at info@garstonanimalrescue.com. Tiger is no more than three years old and Mandy is maybe around 12 months old, and she’s spayed, micro-chipped, de-flead and wormed. We think that they’d be more suited to a home where there are no young children, so a nice quiet home would be our ideal.

Concerned about a Medical Mistake? Medical treatment is usually very good and the vast majority of people experience a favourable outcome. Unfortunately sometimes treatment can go wrong and this article aims to explain your options with regards to the right to complain and in some circumstances when legal action is appropriate. It concerns medical treatment which is provided by a wide range of health professionals such as Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Dentists, and Opticians etc. Medical mistakes can include for example a failure to diagnose your condition, making a mistake during an operation or prescribing the wrong drug. How can you complain? It is important to understand that taking legal action is only about getting compensation. Other things, like an apology, might be more important to you. Also, you may need to make some inquiries about what happened to you before you know whether you would have a case for a legal claim. In my experience often the real issue is poor communication and whilst the patient feels that there has been a delay or a mistake during the course of their treatment, there is in fact an entirely reasonable explanation. It is therefore very sensible to firstly take advantage of the health organisation’s complaints procedure. If you were a private patient you should complain to the doctor who treated you or the hospital or clinic you attended. All private hospitals and clinics should have a complaints procedure. Normally a complaint will need to be provided in writing setting out a brief overview of what treatment you have received and why you are unhappy. If you want to complain about an NHS service such as a hospital, GP or dentist it is generally advisable to do this in writing. The time limit for a complaint is normally 12 months from the date the event happened, or 12 months from the date you first became aware of it. My experience is that the NHS will normally extend this deadline, provided it is still possible for them to complete a fair investigation. You will receive a written response setting out the findings and, where appropriate, apologies and information about what’s being done as a result of your complaint. It is important to remember that you are unable to seek compensation for any injuries you may have suffered or losses you have incurred. If you are not satisfied by the response you have the option to take your complaint to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, which is independent of the NHS. If you are making a complaint but are also considering legal action in the future, it is very important that you do not allow your legal time limit to expire (which is discussed below). Considering Legal Action - If you have already undertaken the complaints procedure (or would

prefer not to) you can consider bringing a claim for Clinical Negligence. It is important to remember that even if you have suffered an injury as a result of medical treatment, this does not mean that your treatment was necessarily of a poor standard. You can only bring a successful claim if you can prove that your treatment was carried out negligently, that is, the care you received fell below medically acceptable standards, and this directly caused your injury. For example during surgery you may have sustained damage to an organ resulting in a very poor outcome. This may however have been a risk of the procedure and not caused by any lack of care by the surgeon. Alternatively because of a misdiagnosis you may have experienced a delay in treatment. Whilst any delay is to be avoided, you would also need to prove that the delay has resulted in an actual injury, for example that more invasive treatment was now required. There are complex legal tests which apply and you would therefore need expert advice to work out whether you have a claim. Therefore it is important that you obtain advice from a solicitor specialised in Clinical Negligence cases. If your solicitor advises you that you have grounds for a legal claim then funding will be arranged. If the solicitor is satisfied that the prospects of the case are sufficient normally they will agree to take the case on a No Win No Fee basis. The Solicitor will also need to take into account the likely value of the claim and, for example, if the injury has been minor and there have been no significant financial losses then it is unlikely that they would be able to accept the case on a No Win No Fee basis. Claim Process - A solicitor will obtain the relevant medical records, a statement about what has happened and any other documents relevant to the case. If for example it is suspected there has been negligent treatment by a GP, then a GP expert would be instructed to consider the available evidence. The expert would be required to consider the standard of care and if failures are identified, what injuries, if any, have been caused by them. Sometimes more than one expert is required. If supportive medical evidence is obtained then a formal process commences with your solicitor sending a Letter of Claim setting out the allegations, details of the injuries and losses. Whilst Clinical Negligence cases can end up in Court, this is very rare because if there is a dispute the Parties will send each other their medical evidence and the experts would then meet to discuss any disagreements. Therefore in my experience it is very unlikely that your case would end up at a Trial, with you having to give evidence. Compensation – This can include any past losses plus any future losses and expenses likely to be

Richard Malloy incurred because of the injury and includes for example damages for injuries, loss of earnings, medical / care costs etc. If the case is about someone who died because of Clinical Negligence, certain people can claim bereavement damages of £11,800 and for the loss of their financial support (called ‘loss of dependency’). Time limits There is usually a 3 year time limit for bringing a claim either from the date the negligence occurred or from when you became aware of the injury being caused by negligence. Different rules apply for fatal claims, children and those who lack capacity. Assessing the correct limitation date can be complicated and it is therefore important that specialist legal advice is obtained without delay. At Gregory Abrams Davidson LLP we assist clients across the country in bringing claims against hospitals, dentists and GPs, both NHS and private. We offer a free initial assessment and ‘no win no fee’ arrangements on suitable claims. We have expertise in dealing with claims such as; missed or delayed diagnosis, surgery claims, cancer claims, child birth injuries, pressure sores, still birth / neo natal claims, fatal claims etc. Richard Malloy is a solicitor and Partner specialising in Clinical Negligence and Dental Negligence Claims and is based at their Penny Lane Office, Allerton. HEY guys and welcome to April’s edition of Life ‘n’ Style. I was hoping to be telling you all about how amazing my LipSync battle went at the Camp and Furnace on Friday night but I’ve got a really big confession to make…. I pulled out! If you know me you will know I suffer from anxiety and I was really worried about taking part. I couldn’t sleep and the thought of taking part was making me feel really ill. The organisers were really nice about it as they knew I’d help with the charity in other ways but this one just wasn’t the one for me. I went along, though, to support all the other acts taking part and what a night it was. The talent was just amazing and I totally take my hat off to everyone involved. It’s been a really busy week in our Hairfields salon this week with the arrival of two new stylists who we have welcomed from our lovely dearest friend’s salon Herbert of Liverpool... Lee had been working at Herbert’s for 35

Vernon Johnson owned a music shop in the wealthy district of Sefton Park on the south side of Liverpool at the turn of the last century. Whilst he taught piano in the shop his wife taught classical ballet in a small studio at the rear. The Vernon Johnson Dance School has been located on Allerton Road since the 1930s. We teach all types of dancing to all age groups; there are classes for tiny tots ballet and tap up to adults’ ballroom and latin and our aim is to make classes social, fun and enjoyable. We are celebrating our 100th year with a school show called ‘History’ with dancing from each decade since the 1920s and over 80 members of the school will be taking part. There is also a celebratory dinner dance on Saturday June 2 at The Venue in Huyton and if anyone would like a ticket please email or contact Margaret – we would love to hear from anyone who attended the school or anyone who has any photographs For more information about classes please go to our web site www. vernonjohnson.co.uk

Eating on the run THE LIVERPOOL PERSONAL TRAINER

with Paul Coshott. Call 07887 868872 or visit www.liverpoolpersonaltrainer.com

A FEW weeks ago, I travelled down to London to see my fave group, a-ha. Usually when I do these kind of trips, I’m always well prepared – I’ll cook some food and take it with me, some snacks and water. But this time, I didn’t (due to circumstances). In a nutshell, I spent two days eating absolute rubbish. Even on the way home. I ended up going to a burger place and getting a meal.

While spending about a day eating rubbish, the first thing I noticed about myself was that I was moody. The foods that I’d eaten had little or no nutritional value and I’d hardly had any water either. I even felt fat! Do you eat on the run, or are you eating a lot of processed meals and snacks etc? If so, here’s a few tips that might help you to eat more healthy meals: n Always carry water around with you. When your body is dehydrated, it can give off signals that can be misinterpreted for being hungry (causing you

to have snacks) n Cooking meals at home is so much cheaper. If you do this, try and cook more than is needed so you can put some to the side and freeze it for the next day. Try and do this often and get into the habit of doing it n I allow myself a ‘cheat day’, where I will have a bit of stodge or chocolate etc. If you are eating healthily (or trying to) all the time it’s good to have a bit of a break every now and again. My cheat day is a Saturday. Because I ate some rubbish yesterday, I will now have a healthy day on Saturday so I’ve swapped the days around.

It’s a lot easier to stick to a routine, Monday to Friday, so therefore I use a Saturday for my cheat day. I suggest you try and do the same and if you do have a cheat day midweek, swap it for your usual cheat day n It really is cheap and easy to put some healthy meals together. The likes of Jamie Oliver, Gino D’Acampo, etc, are always in the media putting meals together. It just takes some practice. The more you practice the better you’ll become at doing them and then I’m sure you’ll start enjoying cooking Do remember, though, that processed meals, snacks, sugary drinks, takeaways, chocolate etc, should all be eaten minimally Paul, Liverpool Personal Trainer

Your voice, your vote WITH just a few weeks to go until the local elections, students in Liverpool are being urged not to lose their vote. Liverpool City Council is reminding students that, even if they are not from the city, they

are eligible to register to vote both at their home and university addresses. Registration packs are also being sent out to halls of residence. Local elections will take place on May 3. The deadline for registration is April 17.

Barbara Green’s entry to the “Food” Competition at South Liverpool Photographic Society. The idea for this photo was hatched in London as Barbara undertook her regular granny sitting duties. This photo was going to be tricky to take as Barbara wanted to utilise natural light, ie daytime. Her grandchildren helped make the jelly, which by evening had set perfectly. However .... no way would they wait until the next day so helped themselves!!! With no time remaining to re-create the scene before returning to Liverpool the family “demolished” their creation! Here’s the final attempt with grateful help of a neighbour’s child Amber G Smith! Natural light controlled only by lowering the window blind.

Third team on verge of victory for second successive season By Jordan Smith

SAT RDAY March 26, 2016 was a warm and sunny day for an absolute mauling. Sefton Hockey Club Men’s third team travelled without a goalkeeper, captain or umpire and with only eight players. They were dark days for the squad. Two years on we now sit in the league above, two games away from promotion to the fifth division and the possibility of back-to-back promotions. In the 2016 17 season a new look Men’s third team stormed to promotion, scoring the most goals in the league and conceding the least. It was the result of a brilliant season-long performance based on hard work, dedication and the successful rotation of 36 players throughout the campaign. This season a lack of availability has hampered new captain Dan Owen’s team at important times.

A double header in October against first and third placed teams led to eight players playing 140 minutes of hockey in a 24hour period. Despite some difficulties, this unwavering and selfmotivated team has battled to within touching distance of second place and a potential second successive promotion. The past two games have typified the best performances of the team this season. A tough away game against Bangor University, facing a younger and fitter

opposition, drew out the class and experience of the threes to clinch a 2-1 away victory. The most recent fixture showed the heart and desire that has pushed the team forward this season, going from 2-0 down within 10 minutes to 2-1 at half time and finishing with the threes running out deserved 4-2 winners. What a difference two years and a siege mentality make. With two games left, I’ll leave you with the quote of a very famous man “I hope none of you are stupid enough to bet against us!”

Ioniq has changed my opinion of hybrids

UNTIL I drove the Hyundai Ioniq my experience of hybrids was that they were dull, inefficient and slow. My opinion has changed! During a week-long test I drive the Ioniq to London and Chichester as well as pottering about locally. And not once do I break into a sweat fretting about where the nearest petrol station can be found. For those unfamiliar with hybrids they couple a petrol engine to an electric motor. The electric motor kicks in at low speeds making them more environmentally friendly than petrol or diesel vehicles. The electric motor is charged when the petrol engine is running. A very light right foot and speeds typically of 30mph and under generally results in electric mode EV being engaged. However, there are occasions when EV mode fails to kick in and there is no rhyme nor reason why. One such occasion is in heavy traffic in the capital when we all slow down to a crawl yet we are still running on petrol. This really shouldn’t be the case and is frustrating. Even when reversing off the driveway it is the petrol engine that is called on most of the time. Yet when I shoot my video, as you can see at www.testdrives.bi , EV mode is engaged while I reverse. There is a push button

start and the driver must remember to unlock the foot operated parking brake, which takes a little getting used to. Despite the Ioniq’s reliance on its petrol engine it is surprisingly economical and can be driven at a good speed on the motorway without the worry that the fuel reserves are rapidly depleting. It will easily travel over 550 miles on a full tank of petrol. Two years ago I drove both the Nissan and Toyota equivalents and this was never the case for me then – the driver was lucky to achieve 300 miles on a full tank. And the Toyota Prius is fitted with a 45 litre fuel tank just like the Hyundai Ioniq. However, the Prius is a 1.8-litre petrol compared to the Hyundai’s 1.6-litre unit. At the traffic lights the Ioniq swiftly pulls away. Glancing at reviews of this car I am surprised that I cannot find a single complimentary one. They all complain about lack of speed and a general lacklustre

appeal. My experience is an utter contrast. I find the design interesting and it is a well-constructed fivedoor hatchback. It’s ideal family transport, easily accommodating three car seats in the back. My only qualm is that the seat belt buckles in the rear fall too low into the seats making it really difficult to insert or remove a seatbelt when there are three children’s car seats in place. But there is luxury; even the rear occupants enjoy heated seats while the driver gets a heated steering wheel and even an air heated/ cooled seat, as does their passenger. Overall, the Ioniq is a welcome addition to the hybrid line up and it surpasses expectations, setting a new standard. South remain in pole position By Jim Stanway

DESPITE the recent very poor weather South Liverpool FC have actually managed to play some football! A draw with third-placed Neston Nomads on their artificial pitch via a Gary Dunning penalty when the worst of the cold snap had created a whiteout across the country kept their rivals at arms length. A late winner by Cameron Dalton against relegation threatened West Kirby was a welcome three points while an excellent second half with an own goal and a Jimmy Eves header put paid to title rivals Mossley Hill with a 2-1 win. South’s reserves lost to league leaders Hale by 2-0 but defeated lowly West Kirby Reserves by 4-0 with two goals for David Mee and one each for Andy Walker and Luke Partington. The latter win has kept the team in contention for the second division title. The youth team experienced their first defeat of the season with a 2-0 loss to bottom of the table West Kirby but remain on course to retain the youth division title. They have however made progress in two cup competitions. Most notably the team defeated Litherland Remyca by two goals from Jordan Mcdonough and Michael Kielty to reach the final of the Liverpool County FA Youth Cup. The final will be played at Walton Hall Park on Tuesday May 15 at 6.45pm.

Happy Easter to all our readers and advertisers
