Changing times COMMUNITIES adapt as new circumstances create an inevitable need for change, from people’s everyday lives to outside influences such as economics and politics. Changing times are reflected in our surroundings. I have always taken great pleasure in discovering the age of buildings and other structures and their histories. Walking or cycling are among the best ways to come across and get to know localities. Familiar places often have obscure or unknown aspects and qualities. A chance remark or reading something can trigger new insights into a well-known place. A wealth of information chronicles the passage of time – from old books, pamphlets, newspapers and maps to letters and all types of official documents. The Victorians were obsessive about recording all manner of facts and statistics. For example, their street directories held
astonishing levels of quicklyaccessible information. At the flip of a page, in a matter of seconds, the inquirer could locate any individual or business in Liverpool. The first Liverpool street directory was published in 1766, compiled by local bookseller John Gore, when the port had a population of about 30,000 living in 6,000 houses. Street directories printed over the next 200 years became

increasingly sophisticated. From the basic listings in Gore’s first slim volume, the directories grew in size as the Liverpool prospered and the population grew. Kelly’s Directories, founded by a former Post Office official, started in London but eventually covered the rest of the country including Merseyside. By 1898 more than 70 Kelly’s Directories covered England. Staff of 800 included 150
agents ensuring that directories were updated every year. In a typical directory, at least one name in five or six needed some alteration annually. The Convent of Our Lady of the Cenacle (pictured) in Lance Lane, Wavertree, is seen on a 1920 postcard sent by a guest. Before becoming a convent in 1911, this grand house was called The Elms. Street directories for that year reveal neighbours including the Misses Henrietta and Helen Shaw who ran a ladies’ school and iron founder John Guy (no relation). The previous occupant of The Elms was Joseph Boumphrey, a gentleman of independent means, who moved in with his wife Jane in 1875. The Elms was demolished some years ago but a modern convent now occupies part of the site. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10am to 5pm every day, admission free.

The Perils of Dying at the Wrong Time of the Day! It is usually never a good time to die, but did you know that the exact time of day of your death could have major consequences for who inherits your estate? This is a genuine and very real problem for [married] couples who jointly own property and die in a common accident. The operation of Property Laws of Succession in relation to joint assets, combined with a ‘rule’ to determine who is deemed to die first in an accident, creates unexpected results and has devastating financial consequences when couples die either Intestate (without a Will) or with poorly drafted wills that each have different beneficiaries.
2. Emergency services arrive on the scene and W is pronounced dead at the scene, but the H is still alive and is air-ambulanced to Aintree A&E, but sadly dies 24 hours later due to the severity of his injuries. As the house is owned as Joint Tenants, it automatically passes to the survivor which is now the H. Distribution is therefore H’s £25K ISA and the £275K house passes to the charity (as his bequest of residue to W fails as she does not survive him by 28 days). On the other hand, the W now only owns her £25K ISA that passes to her nephews and nieces.
A common example will show the various permutations that can so easily occur. Husband (H – aged 66) and Wife (W – aged 65) have no children and die in a motorway crash. H has no surviving parents, but a brother he has not seen or spoken to for 25 years. The W has a sister. They own their home (worth £275,000) and very modest savings of £25K each in ISA’s. The house is held as ‘Joint Tenants’ at the Land Registry. They have made homemade wills leaving everything to each other provided the other survives by 28 days. They have each provided for a final distribution if they are the survivor. H has requested all his wealth goes to the Donkey Sanctuary. The W has named her nephews and nieces, as their mother (W’s sister) has dementia and lives in a care home.
3. Finally, turning up at the scene, emergency services declare the H dead and it is the W who is rushed to A&E to sadly die the following day due to injuries. We have the same outcome as example 1 above – the house is inherited by the W and passes solely to her nephews and nieces.
What happens if the ‘motorway pile up’ scenario happens and both die on the M62? Three possibilities (and two outcomes) exist: 1. Emergency services arrive and both H & W are pronounced dead at the scene. As the order of deaths cannot be determined, the law assumes that the eldest died first. As the house is owned as Joint Tenants, it automatically passes to the ‘survivor’ a spilt second before death of the first and in this case accordingly, the house is technically inherited by the W under Property Rules. Distribution sees H’s £25K ISA pass to the charity (as his bequest of residue to W fails as she does not survive him by 28 days). On the other hand, the W passes £300K to her nephews and nieces, being both her £25K ISA and the entire value of the house which she is deemed to inherit under Property Rules (again she passes nothing to H because of the 28 day survivorship period)
Neither H nor W will have contemplated these outcomes. Would the position be any different if H and W had not made wills? The situation would be even more disastrous! If the only change of circumstances is the lack of wills, the scenarios now produce the following distributions: 1. Both H & W dead and order unclear. W is assumed to inherit house under Property Rules and her £300K passes to her sister under the intestacy rules, to be used to pay her care home fees with the nephews and nieces seeing nothing. H’s £25K goes to his brother. 2. W dead at scene and H dies following day. H passes £300K to his estranged brother and W passes £25K effectively to the care home!
scenarios, each will see £162,500 pass to their nominated beneficiaries under their will b. Change the ultimate beneficiaries under the wills from each party only dealing with their own family, to a combined distribution within each will – i.e H & W each state that their final distribution will be 50% to the Charity and 50% to the nephews and nieces. By each will being a ‘mirror’ of the other, the order of deaths becomes academic c. Combine both of the above solutions – a belt and braces approach that also provides effective tax and care home planning. The observant reader of this article will have noticed a major ‘flaw’ in the wills H & W have written. No accident occurs and one party dies of natural causes and their spouse inherits everything. Straight forward and entirely in accordance with their wishes. However, when the survivor dies a decade later, the combined wealth is passing solely to one side of the family. Had both contemplated £325K only passing in accordance with the wishes of the survivor to the exclusion of the wishes of the first to die? We are again in the territory of ‘chance’ with the role of the dice determining who will eventually inherit. Ask yourself whether your will is water-tight or does it have spurious outcomes based upon orders of death over which you have no control? If so you need your wills professionally examined to remove these anomalies. Don’t tell your beneficiaries that they are well provided for so long as you die at the right time of day!
3. H dead at scene and W dies following day. Same outcome as 1 above Three solutions exists: a. Change the legal ownership of the house from a Joint Tenancy to a Tenancy in Common. This technical change effects inheritance outcomes and has no bearing upon day to day ownership and your ability to sell or mortgage your home. Both H and W will then be deemed to own a 50% share of the proceeds of sale. As such the ‘share’ of the property will be treated exactly like the cash ISA’s and regardless of the above

Bouncing Ben – THE grim winter landscape was enough to make anyone feel gloomy – bare trees, rainsoaked ground and not even a cold wind to liven things up. Ben Box fitted the mood perfectly – he was the most laid-back pupil at St Bertha’s Academy. He had perfected lethargy into a fine art. Nothing seemed to move him. From his expressionless face to his rarely-moving feet he was a picture no artist could paint. Staff had given up trying to motivate Ben long ago. This was chiefly because he attended classes on time and worked slowly but well. But there was no vital spark, no youthful zest that came naturally to every other boy of his age. Mr Box summed it up after he was summoned to see the head, concerned at the boy’s apparent lack of spirit. “Most of our family are like that,” Mr Box said gravely. “It is one reason we run the most successful undertaker’s in Liverpool and possibly in the North West. Ben has our natural sense of decorum.” The other boys tried to prove otherwise. Paper bags burst under Ben’s nose produced nothing more than a twitch of the eyebrow. Itching powder provoked little more than a puzzled look.
He was impervious to stink bombs. Sometimes the boys got into scrapes with scallies who roughly mocked St Bertha’s uniform of top hat and tails for the older boys. A stone knocked off Toadie Frogg’s topper as they walked over the recreation ground one afternoon. Three scruffy lads stood laughing. Ben became almost animated, walking over steadily and skilfully pulling their legs from under them. All ran off. This was about as lively as it got – until the fire. Boarders at St Bertha’s slept in dormitories behind the main school buildings. Ben’s overlooked a yard with a gate leading
Strange Tale by Anton Valdemart into the grounds. “Fire!” shouted Brush the caretaker one frosty morning. He had seen smoke billowing from under the eaves. Fortunately, all the boys were dressed ready for church - except Ben. Predictably he was always last to be ready. He was putting on his shoes as the others filed past him. Suddenly smoke was swirling out of the dormitory windows. Frantic efforts to get inside were thwarted by heat and smoke. Then a familiar figure appeared at an open window. A large tarpaulin was stretched out. Ben did not need any encouragement and shot out of the window like a cork from a bottle. No-one had seen him move so quickly. The horse-drawn fire engine arrived and the blaze was quickly extinguished. Ben landed almost elegantly in the middle of the sheet, his top had still in place. The boys celebrated by tossing him into the air three times – Ben bounced, smiling broadly. As soon as his feet touched the ground, things changed. “I’ve never seen such a bouncing boy,” said the head’s wife. “Once he hardly moved but now he’s everywhere, always on the go.” n Read my Strange Tale in the next Link: The Man at the Window.

THIS delicious Greek recipe for tiganopsomo (try saying that three times quickly!) is perfect if you need to whip together an impressive last minute breakfast. It’s been put together by Greek chef Katerina, who is usually found in her kitchen on the Greek island of Poros. This dish is a firm favourite among her guests who come to join her on one of her cookery holidays with GoLearnTo.com. Serves eight / Ready in 45 minutes Ingredients 500g flour 7g (1.5 tsp) dried yeast 300g lukewarm water 1/2 tsp of sugar 1/2 tsp of salt 3 tbsp chopped fresh herbs for the filling (rosemary, mint, parsley, sage, oregano) 2 tbsp olive oil 200g feta cheese for the filling Extra olive oil for frying Honey or balsamic vinegar to drizzle on top
Directions 1. Mix all the ingredients until you have a soft dough, and let it rest for 30 minutes. 2. Separate the dough into six small balls and flatten each one with a roller. 3. Add some feta cheese and herbs to each of them. 4. Fold the dough around the feta and herbs and flatten it again. 5. Slap the flat dough into a frying pan on low heat until they turn golden brown. Turn the bread often. Serving suggestion Serve the bread on a plate and drizzle with honey or balsamic vinegar.

Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Do I need experience? A: No you do not. Sometimes, the tasks we carry out in every day life give us all the experience we need. The role of supporting somebody in their personal life can include prompts or assistance to wash and dress, cooking, preparing meals, shopping, making lists, cleaning etc. It can be about assisting somebody to access the local community. Providing somebody with the encouragement and support they need to complete daily tasks confidently and independently can make a huge difference. Q: Do I receive training? A:CQC FullRegistered training and support is provided. All staff are given the opportunity to be enrolled on to a Health & Social Care Qualification in addition to the mandatory training which is provided at the beginning. But like anything, you learn more when you’re actually involved in it. Every day is different and every day, we learn something new. Q: Am i right for this kind of work? A: Yes! Everybody has individual qualities and experience that they can bring to the role. It takes all kinds
of people to connect with our clients. Some of our clients prefer a quiet, reserved person while others would benefit from somebody who is more direct and outgoing. 67 minutes of kindness – a tribute to Nelson Mandela NELSON Mandela’s daughter is calling on the people of Liverpool to mark next month’s Mandela Day by spending 67 minutes improving the lives of others. Supported by Liverpool City Council, the My67 campaign has been established by charity Mandela8 in partnership with Dr Makaziwe ‘Maki’. It aims to mark the 67 years Nelson Mandela fought for social justice by encouraging people to give up 67 minutes of their time to help others. Mandela Day takes place on Thursday 18 July – Nelson Mandela’s birthday – and anyone wishing to be part of the uplifting initiative is being asked to carry out their good deed either on the day itself, or anytime that week. Dr Maki said: “I am very happy to learn that Mandela8 will be celebrating by doing acts of kindness and goodness with the Liverpool community – it is very
exciting. My father said what matters in life is not that you have lived your life, but that you have made a difference in the lives of other people. “This is about showing love and compassion to your neighbours.” The call-out has the backing of legendary American singer and member of the Jacksons, Jermaine Jackson, who has already pledged
to give up 67 minutes of his time. My67 was piloted in 2018 and was initially aimed at youngsters across the city. As part of the scheme, 170 schools received Nelson Mandela’s autobiography The Long Walk to Freedom and school pupils took part in litter picks, art projects, gardening and raised money for local charities with football fundraisers and bake sales. This year, everyone across the city, and the North West, is being urged to take part, with suggested activities including: n Get involved in a community planting project. n If you grow your own fruit and vegetables, gift them to family and friends. n Get to know a neighbour, if they’re elderly, offer to mow the lawn of do odd-jobs around their house. n Arrange a community skip with
your neighbours. n Support your local foodbank. n Volunteer at a local charity. n Mentor someone – young or old. n Organise a group walk and talk to benefit people’s health and wellbeing. There are more than 60 suggested ideas for how to get involved on the official website – www.mandela8. org.uk/my-67. Organisers are encouraging everyone who takes part to promote their acts of kindness on social media using #mandela8my67minutes or #my67minutes. Other organisations supporting My67 are the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Liverpool Learning Partnership, Africa Oyé, Unison North West, MSB, Granby Toxteth Development Trust, Prima Group, Steve Biko Housing Association and Weaver Vale Housing Trust.

Top five things to do in Malaga By Jennifer Carey
EVERY day in the summer, flights depart Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Malaga with budget airline carriers like Easyjet and Ryanair, taking excited holidaymakers onto the everpopular resorts and towns of the Costa del Sol. But have you ever paid a visit to
the city itself? Malaga is a vibrant city with rich culture, history and a strong Spanish identity. Its international seaport is the oldest in Spain and welcomes many cruise-liner passengers – most recently those from The World. So if you are lucky enough to pay this wonderful city a visit this

summer, here are five things you can do to make the most of your time there. Our top five: 1. Alcazaba - Definitely one for history fans, this ancient Moorish citadel was built in the 11th Century and is the best-preserved citadel in Spain. Complete with beautiful gardens, elaborate fountains and remnants of a Roman theatre dating back to the 1st Century BC. 2. Catedral de la Encarnacion de Malaga – This stunning Roman Catholic cathedral was built somewhere between the 16th and 18th Century and is located in the heart of the city. There’s a lovely café in front of it with plenty of outdoors seats. Grab a
vino, coffee or beer and take in the beautiful architecture. Did you know? One of the cathedral’s two towers remains unfinished, resulting in the nickname “La Manquita” meaning “The One-Armed Lady”. 3. Mercado Central de Atarazanas – Malaga’s colourful food market is a must-see for an instant taste of local life, tastes, people and attitudes. The lively market is a mix of stalls, bars and restaurants. It’s an ideal place to try some typical cuisine but plan carefully – the market closes in the afternoon. 4. Museo Picasso Malaga – We’re all familiar with Pablo’s work but did you know he was born in Malaga? As a result, the city is

home to this wonderful museum with 285 pieces of Picasso’s work including painting, sculpture, ceramics and more. Did you know? The museum is only 200 metres away from the house where Picasso was born, in the Plaza de la Merced. This beautiful ‘plaza’ (square to you and me) is worth a visit in its own right and also home to some great tapas bars for a quick pit stop. 5. Calle Larios – Attention shopaholics! Strictly pedestrians only, this shopping street is more than just a shopper’s paradise - it’s the place in Malaga to promenade and be seen. Make sure you pay it a visit during special celebrations, such as Christmas or Easter, when
decorations and lights adorn the buildings. How can I get there? Getting into the centre of Malaga is probably the easiest and cheapest way to travel in the world! OK, maybe that’s an exaggeration but, honestly, it’s really good. The C1 train line connects Malaga Airport Terminal 3 to the city within 12 minutes, as well as other towns along the coast, such as Fuengirola, Benalmadena and Torremolinos (only 10 minutes!). A one-way ticket costs between approximately €2-3 depending on where you start your journey. ¡Buen viaje!

Supported intern awarded VIP experience at Olly Murs concert SUPPORTED Internship student, Kelsey, enjoyed an exclusive night at the Manchester Arena last recently after becoming the lucky winner of two Olly Murs tickets. The tickets, kindly donated to Knowsley Council from Knowsley Chamber and Leonard Curtis as part of the Knowsley Better Together Initiative, granted Kelsey and her Mum a VIP experience in one the arena’s private hospitality boxes. Kelsey, who is an avid Olly Murs fan, was nominated to receive the tickets by her mentor Owen, for the outstanding progress she has made throughout her time on the programme, leading to Kelsey securing permanent paid employment. Kelsey was one of 12 young learners with additional needs studying the Supported Internship Programme, which launched in September 2016. The programme, facilitated by Knowsley Community College in conjunction with Knowsley Council, aims to help young people, aged 16-25, with additional needs, who are seeking the skills, experience and confidence to enter employment but require some extra support.
Kelsey receiving the tickets from her mentor, Owen. As part of the programme, interns work on developing their independence, confidence, communication and employability skills as well as gaining invaluable work experience over the academic year. When Kelsey first started the programme, working as an intern within the Business Support Team at Knowsley Council, she found it hard to adapt to change but was determined to improve her confidence and communication skills, speak to new people and
gain workplace skills that would help her to secure a paid job in the future. Speaking about her role, Kelsey said, “I love my job in business support. I used to be shy but I am much more confident now. I have made many friends and talk to lots of staff when I deliver their post. I love getting up and going to work every day - it’s great being part of the team.” In her role Kelsey was originally responsible for the collection and franking of the outgoing post, her daily tasks now include the updating of the post spreadsheet, and preparing paperbased information into batches ready to be digitised. Owen said, “Kelsey progressed her way through the internship with great determination. “She gained valuable transferable skills and confidence in her own ability. She massively improved her personal and social skills. I couldn’t think of anyone more fitting to be awarded the tickets.” After completing a full year of her internship and impressing Knowsley Council with her hard work and determination, Kelsey has since secured a permanent, paid position with them.

Weight loss and metabolism By Paul Coshott
EVERY now and again, I come across someone who says they can’t lose weight because they have a slow metabolism. Some people can have a medical condition that can effect metabolism but otherwise the majority of factors that affect metabolism are controlled by ourselves Here’s some tips on how to speed up your metabolism: n Increase activity. If you’ve hit a plateau on your weight loss, no need to decrease your calories. Try and increase your activity instead. Try and add in some weight training sessions or
resistance work n Eat more protein. When you take in more protein, your body has got to work harder to break it down, therefore burning more calories. In fact, protein burns more calories through the digestive process, more than any other food. n Have a good breakfast. I still come across people who don’t have any breakfast or will only
HAIRFIELDS HAIR SALON
have a small breakfast. Remember that potentially your body has been fasting for 6-10 hours. I tend to have bagels, scrambled egg whites and avocado (carbs, protein and healthy fats). When your body goes into starvation mode, your metabolism will slow right down. n Drink plenty of water. Increasing your water intake can also contribute towards a faster
metabolism n Try and get plenty of sleep. When you are sleeping, your body repairs itself. Aim for about 6-8 hours. n My Women Only transformation classes and kids’ Ju Jitsu classes will be continuing right throughout the summer holidays. Make your garden look a bit more glam this year HEY guys and welcome to July/August Life ‘n’ Style. So I’ve been a bit obsessed with the garden lately. It’s been a year since I moved into my house so I decided it was time to make it look a bit more glam for the summer. After endless trips to B&Q, Dunelm and Taskers and many nights surfing the internet I finally made some decisions! The bottom of the garden didn’t have the best grass so I went for a bit of decking. A table and chairs and a couple of sun loungers with a nice carousel. I’m a big lover or grey at the moment so spent a lot of time researching the perfect colour…I didn’t realise how many different shades there are out there! Bluey tones, pinky tones and ones with not much depth. I put a picture up on my story on Instagram when I had finally painted (and yes I am good at DIY believe it or not and I did paint it myself!). I had so many people message asking what colours I used so I thought I’d share it with all you guys too. I used Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain in Silver Birch for the decking and I used Cuprinol Ducks Back Shed and Fence Paint in Silver Copse for the fence. For the outside dining I went for the Vancouver 5 Piece Set from www.very. co.uk for £289.99 (was £329.99). I wanted something that was nice to look at but also felt nice as I tested so many out. The four chairs fit nicely underneath the table and the cushions are really really comfortable. The table to chair ratio is also good which I am quite fussy about. It was also easy to put together and took me about 20 minutes. I also went for the Coral Bay Multi Function
Sun Lounger Set for £479.99 (was £599.99). I thought this was a bit heavy in the price department but I bought my mum the same set last year. It’s well worth the money and you’ve got it for a few more summers to come so it’s worth the little investment. I’m off to Palma in Majorca this week and Bodrum in Turkey the following week so have had my eye out for some really nice bikinis and costumes..
The fab designer Julien McDonald has just designed some gorgeous pieces for Matalan but they aren’t all available to buy until end of June/early July. if you check out my social media I will be uploading them as and when they become available. If you are a bit of a pink person then you will love this outfit I put together from Pretty Little Thing! The Dusky Pink Blazer Dress Is £45.00. As it’s got a bit of a low cut I thought that the Blush Pink Body Suit for £20 worked really well with it. These body suits are really handy too. I have them in a few

different colours and it mixes it up from your usual underwear plus they look nice under things or with a pair of denim shorts. If you’re wanting to find a pair of shoes that will go with almost anything then these Clear Block Heel Strappy Sandals are the ones for £30! With the clear strap.
Last week I was asked to judge a Lip Sync Battle competition for MD Productions in St Helens to raise money for their charity. I was struggling with something to wear, so thought I really like this kaftan I’d been gifted so can I make it work for an evening? Course I can! So I put this fab Cala Bassa Dress/Kaftan/ Top from @nelsbellesboutique www.nelsbelles. com with a pair of denim shorts ( I had from last year ) and a pair of Denim Over The Knee Boots from www.ego.co.uk Nelsbelles is a fab little boutique I came across a couple of years ago in Essex and each year they have so many unique little bits that you don’t see anywhere else. If your looking for some nice shades then @x.lotsoflove.x on Instagram have some really nice accessories.. sunglasses, fur sliders, headbands all for under £25. These are the new F range for £20. I also have them in pink too.

Beechley Stables RDA needs your help The riding stables are based on Harthill Road, Calderstones, and have eight horses and ponies, some of which you may have seen grazing in our paddocks. The stables have been providing riding for the disabled since 1989, most of that time run by Liverpool city council. Since 2015 the stables have been run entirely by a volunteer led charity and rely on donations to keep going. We are looking to secure the future of disabled riding at our historic stables and urgently need personal donations and
corporate sponsorship. Riding means a great deal to our disabled users, in many cases it is their only recreational activity and is recognised for its therapeutic value. Full details of what we do and how you can donate are available on our web site: We are turning for help to our local community and hope that you may be able to make a donation, however small. Six summer family movies to get excited about in 2019 ...
WITH the long-awaited ‘Toy Story 4’ already kicking off the summer’s big releases, we preview the most exciting family films hitting cinema screens in the next few weeks. Term time is nearly up and the summer holidays will soon be upon us and as parents (or supportive grandparents and generous aunts and uncles!) start to feel the heat of keeping the kids entertained through the holiday period, fear not as your local cinema is on-hand to save you from an afternoon of tantrums and tears... and possibly even provide you with some valuable cinema shut-eye (we’ve all done it). So to help best prepare you, here at The Link we’ve put together a preview of the best summer releases of 2019. The Queen’s Corgi Release date: 5th July Arguably the most underappreciated – and hands down the cutest – members of the Royal Family finally get the platform they deserve in this charming animation with a huge British cast.
Dame Julie Walters will take the helm as the Queen, while Jack Whitehall will voice her pet dog Rex and they’ll be supported by the likes of Matt Lucas, Ray Winstone and Sheridan Smith. all-time biggest hits, with director Jon Favreau taking the hot seat after the huge success of another of their major classics The Jungle Book. Stunning animation and a fantastic voice cast, which includes Beyoncé Knowles as Nala, Donald Glover is Simba and bringing back the booming voice of James Earl Jones as Simba’s father, prepare to see your kids experience all of the same emotions you felt when you saw the original for the first time. Not to mention some priceless flatulence-based humour. Angry Birds 2 Release Date: 2nd August If you were pleasantly surprised to find that a popular mobile phone game that lets you catapult a peeved-off bird into a green pig could be stretched into a 90-minute film, then you’ll be very excited to hear that they are back for more this summer, only this time the two mortal enemies are forced to side together when a new threat in the form of a mysterious purple arctic-dwelling bird comes into the picture. Playmobil: The Movie Release date: 9th August Fresh off the success of the LEGO
Movie franchise, comes a step up to the big screen for another huge toy from your childhood. Playmobil has continued to be a kids’ favourite for more than 45 years and this live-action/ animation hybrid looks set to continue that trend. The movie follows a pair of siblings as they are magically drawn into the Playmobil world, and features American singer/ song-writers Meghan Trainor and Adam Lambert, as well as Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe amongst the cast. Dora & The Lost City of Gold Release date: 16th August One for the slightly older kids, this action-packed movie follows a teenage girl – in the mould of a young Lara Croft – as she tries to rescue her parents, who have got themselves into a spot of bother whilst exploring the depths of the jungle. Based on the hit Nickelodeon kids’ show that followed a much more childish version of “Dora The Explorer”, this live-action, adventure-filled movie looks set to be a fun option later this summer. Uglydolls Release date: 16th August For those of you mature enough to remember the ITV classic kid’s show Raggy Dolls (now there’s a theme tune to get stuck in your head for days), Uglydolls hits a familiar tone but also combines that with some talented voice performances by Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, and Janelle Monae. They may well be “ugly,” but with that much singing talent involved, they’re bound to sound pretty great.

Brazilica Festival returns this July THE sound of samba will be heard across Liverpool this summer as one of the city’s cultural highlight events, Brazilica Festival, returns for its 12th year this July. 2019’s offering from Liverpool Carnival Company will feature a packed programme taking over Liverpool’s city streets from July 12-14. A variety of fringe events including club nights, live music, film programme, workshops and the Carnival Queen competition all form part of this year’s festival. New for 2019 will see the addition of a Carnival King who, along with this year’s crowned Carnival Queen, will lead the sensational night-time parade on Saturday 13 July. Remaining the highlight of the festival the vibrant and colourful parade, featuring 16 samba bands from across the UK and Europe, will make its way
through the city. Previous years have seen the Brazilica parade attract in excess of 35,000 people, with crowds lining the streets along the route as it made its way from Abercrombie Square through the city centre streets. Maeve Morris of Liverpool Carnival Company said: “We are excited to bring Brazilica back for another fabulous year! As ever expect a spectacular array of colour, music and dance as we celebrate the very best of Brazilian culture. “There will be lots going on at this year’s festival with a full programme of events including the brand-new addition of a Carnival King who will accompany our beautiful Carnival Queen in leading this year’s parade. We will be announcing the full details over the coming weeks, so get ready to samba Liverpool!”

Dog of the month – Sally SALLY is a 14 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier who has won the hearts of all the staff Dogs Trust with her little Staffy swagger! She’s such a sweet little thing, and loves to cuddle up and shower you with affection. She would make an ideal companion for someone who is home most of the day and is looking for a little chum. She can be nervous at first but she soon comes round when she knows she’s OK, and you’ll have a friend for life. Sal craves company, but happily she’s able to spend her time in a foster home while she waits for someone to adopt her.
She doesn’t enjoy being alone and would love to be someone’s sidekick. Sally is perfectly housetrained and can live with children aged 10 and over. She’s not so keen on cats and can be choosy about her doggy friends too. South looking for promotion By Jim Stanway
AFTER a recent meeting the management committee of South Liverpool Football Club have decided to set the wheels in motion to start the progress up the footballing pyramid. An application to the North West Counties League needs to be in place before December although a lot of work needs to be done on and off the pitch before then. South’s move to the new Jericho Lane complex in January has prompted the club to take advantage of the excellent facilities there. Although the next level of football requires some development at the new ground, including a 50-seater stand and a separate walkway for the players onto the pitch, there are many of the requirements for the next level already in place including superb floodlights and top-class railing on three sides of the pitch. Of course the team will also have to finish in the top five of their current division of the West Cheshire League (the team finished fifth in the season just
finished) and will also need to finish above any rivals who may also apply for promotion. The 3g pitches at the new Jericho Lane have allowed the club to expand the number of teams under their name. Next season will see two veterans teams playing on a Sunday in the Cheshire Veterans League and one on a Saturday in the veterans section of the I-Zingari Combination. There will also be an under 21 team playing on a Sunday in the North West Under 21 Development League. The latter team will act as a conduit for our young players to gain valuable playing time in a competitive league with the hope that they will progress to adult football on Saturdays. The club has also started up a walking football team for men and women of a certain age and play on a Tuesday afternoon. Newcomers are welcome and can start by contacting Jim Stanway on 07566 248136. Our junior section is also looking for new players and anybody interested should contact Brad Harkness on 07921 663447.

MAY 21 was an innocuous date for most, but not for the hockey players of Liverpool Sefton. It signalled the start of a new era, as the eagerly awaited new pitch at Liverpool College was officially opened for business. Over 30 keen players from clubs across the city swarmed in the warm weather to christen the turf. A ‘friendly’ round robin system emerged with four teams playing across two half pitches making sure that everyone was involved from the first whistle to the last. The teams were mixed with people of different ages, genders, teams, positions and clubs all getting stuck in together. This format will continue throughout the summer until preseason starts. We are also delighted to be able to host Back to Hockey sessions now that the new pitch is ready. These are perfect for anyone wanting to try hockey for the first time, or just get back into
