WIN, WIN, WIN

HOME SWEET HOME By Stephen Guy

THE smallest homes can be warm and inviting despite the challenges created by lack of space. Long ago houses were often limited in size because of a number of factors, from construction issues to necessities such as the availability of land. Some people created their own living space in what were little more than hovels. They were essentially mud huts made from wattle and daub, with thatched roofs. These could be built relatively quickly, sometimes on common land where they were known as squatters’ cottages. Others were squeezed into any available space, particularly in towns. People created this type of basic housing over many centuries but it does not happen today. This is because modern planning, building and public health regulations have outlawed housing which, although sometimes picturesque, was often not good for physical and mental wellbeing.

The Fisherman’s Hut (pictured) at Otterspool was among the last of a number of waterside cottages which flourished when the river teemed with life. Buttressed by timber and heaps of stones, it stood near the end of Jericho Lane. The hut was occupied by one of the last fishermen and his family until 1927. Although it was tiny, 95 High Street in Wavertree had a big claim to fame. Until the last family moved out in 1925 it was the smallest house in England. It was next door to a coffee house (later a pub) and on a bustling street where the residents would have spent much of their waking hours. The house was probably built about 1850 in an alleyway. Just six foot wide and 14 ft deep, a couple are said to have brought up their eight children within its walls.

page 22

The interior stairs were 16 inches wide so that large people could only go up and down by turning sideways. The little house remained empty for years before being incorporated into the Cock and Bottle pub in 1952. A tiny thatched cottage called Sparrow Hall stood for centuries off Hogginson’s Plat (an old word for plot) until the 1860s when the track

became Greenhill Road as the district developed. Generations of poor residents of Sparrow Hall lived off the land. The cottage was swept away when this part of Allerton was built up after the First World War. ■ Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10am to 5pm every day, admission free.

Strictly Woolton, Strictly Alder Hey, Strictly Bezzies

A GREAT evening was had by all at The Elephant in Woolton Village at the end of November. Thanks to Lynne Ainsworth, the founder of Bezzy Buddies (see below), from all of us for arranging tickets for a group of Bezzies to attend the Simon Rimmer and Strictly Friends Quiz charity night with all proceeds to Alder Hey. A great night was had by all! There was a glass of bubbly on arrival, a quiz, and the most fantastic entertainment. What a great night out and all in aid of such a good cause. The evening kicked off with Simon Rimmer, who has been one of the stars of this year’s Strictly of course and who was “our favourite”, introducing his first Strictly friends Aljaz Skorjanec and Gemma Atkinson. As you can imagine the crowd went mad, we were all absolutely delighted. I don’t think we were quite expecting that and actually as I write this they will be practising like mad as they have made it into the final! I am sure everyone who was at The Elephant that night and in fact many Liverpudlians would want me to send Aljaz and Gemma the very best of luck and thank them both for taking time out of their very busy schedule while they were rehearsing in Manchester. Good Luck! Simon then introduced his next Strictly friend, Aston Merrygold (oh, actually Aston was ‘our

good old days.

Simon Rimmer and Lynne Ainsworth. favourite’!). As you can imagine, everyone was ‘made up’ to see Aston and once again The Elephant erupted. Aljaz and Gemma were such great fun and they took part in reading the quiz questions out and spent a lot of time having photos taken with everyone. They were really great sports and great company and then had to leave to get back to Manchester. Aston and Simon stayed all evening and seemed to enjoy it as much as we all did. It was a really fantastic, feelgood night because everyone was having a ball (pardon the pun!). What great sports Simon and Aston are, they really couldn’t have done more! All night long people were having photos taken with all four of them and they were all so lovely. The trophy has to go to Aston though. That poor man!

Moira, Aljaz and Angela. He danced the night away all night with different women, they wouldn’t let him sit down and he just went with it. He was absolutely fantastic, so friendly, great fun and so nice. I bet some of those women couldn’t believe they were dancing with Aston from JLS and of course Strictly. Needless to say all you could hear all night was “oh he was robbed”, referring to him being knocked out of Strictly. And he was, of course……! Anyway to Simon Rimmer and Strictly Friends – a very big thank you from all of us who were there. What a fantastic way to raise money for Alder Hey. BEZZY BUDDIES – New Year New Bezzies Start the new year with Bezzy buddies! Join our website for free and see what events we have this coming year. Let’s make these the

About Bezzy Buddies Bezzy Buddies was founded by local hairdresser Lynne Ainsworth, who owns Hairfields in Taggart Ave, Liverpool 16. After 20 years of marriage and going everywhere with her husband she found herself living alone and feeling quite lonely. She missed not having a partner to do certain things with so she joined numerous dating sites to try and find a partner. After several dates and meeting some lovely men, she decided that what she really needed were friends with similar interests and similar lifestyle. Someone she could go out with and go to nice places. That is when the seeds were sown for Bezzy Buddies and the rest as they say is history. Lynne is passionate about Bezzies and arranges some fantastic events - going for drinks, dinner, dancing, bingo, concerts, gym, walking, shopping, night school, speed dating to name but a few. This is a community of women looking for like-minded women, IT IS NOT A DATING SITE! But if you would like to meet a partner then maybe you will find a friend in the same position as you and you can go speed dating or join a singles group together. It doesn’t matter what age or lifestyle, whether you are married, widowed or single you will have a good time with Bezzie Buddies. For example, I am married to Pete, we are not exactly social

animals (we used to be, haha!) but we do have a busy social life together and separately, we like our holidays, we both work full time (I own and run The LINK) and I have plenty of friends, so I don’t get to as many Bezzy events as I perhaps would like to. That’s the beauty of Bezzies, you can choose which events suit you and you can either just go to an occasional event or you can be out socialising more regularly. At the Strictly night (above) I got talking to a lovely local lady who had lost her husband and been on her own for a while and had seen Bezzy Buddies in The South Liverpool LINK and decided to join. She told me she was having a great time and was delighted she had joined. I can’t think of anything worse than what she had been through, so of course I was delighted she had read about it in The LINK. It means so much to me to hear that. Lynne is passionate about Bezzies and arranges some fantastic events for us, so whether you are looking for a friend to go for drinks, dinner, dancing, bingo, concerts, gym, walking, shopping, night school, speed dating, then get in touch. Lynne, many thanks from all of us Bezzies for all the hard work and passion that you put into it. What our advertisers are saying Hi Moira Just a quick thank you again for the article in South Liverpool LINK about our forthcoming Macmillan Fundraiser at Mossley Hill Athletic Club. Happy New Year from South Liverpool LINK Your favourite local independent paper– and remember The LINK goes into thousands of homes!!!!! And thousands are picked up in supermarkets, post office, libraries every single month. Welcome to your January 2018 issue of South Liverpool LINK. Where does the time go? What will 2018 bring for us all? The LINK is 12 years old this year! I would like start by thanking everyone who sends in emails and letters and who phones us and to all those of you who stop us on the road to say how much you love South Liverpool LINK. I am as passionate and as

committed as ever about The LINK. A few years ago I was out with the papers, it was a rainy day and I walked into a shop and the lovely, friendly shop assistant said how sorry she felt for me having to drop papers in the rain and how she wouldn’t like to have to do my job. I am not going to pretend it is all wonderful, of course it can be hard work, I work long hours and it consumes my life at times but, as I walked out that day, I remember thinking that I couldn’t wish for a better job. I absolutely love The LINK and I have not once regretted leaving my last job at Trinity Mirror. Being out on the road and meeting people is the part I love most

Tim Saunders talks to Tony Hadley TONY Hadley is probably best known as the former singer of Spandau Ballet (he is no longer associated with the band). “My first encounter with singing was at my primary school where I regularly sang hymns.” Initially he wanted to become a doctor perhaps because he had a bone marrow infection at the age of 10. But then he discovered music. “My mum and dad bought me a tape recorder and my first album, The World of David Bowie.” When on holiday at the age of 13, Tony sang in front of 400 people. “But I forgot some of the words halfway through which was embarrassing. I did the same thing again in Holland a couple of weeks ago. “I was singing Rio by Duran Duran and forgot the second verse but the audience didn’t mind.” In 1976 Tony joined his first band whilst he was at school in Potters Bar. Then called The Roots they became The Cut, The Gentry, The Makers and finally Spandau Ballet. Its other members included: John Keeble; Steve

Norman; Gary Kemp; and Michael Ellisson. When the group became The Gentry in 1978, Martin Kemp joined, playing bass guitar. Doesn’t it seem a lifetime ago? We now see him sitting on a sofa in a DFS commercial or acting in a period drama. Spandau Ballet got a record contract with Chrysalis Records in 1980. “Our first hit was To Cut

A Long Story Short which went to no. 5 in the U.K. charts.” They had worldwide success with fantastic hits such as Gold and continued recording until 1990. “Probably my favourite song from the Spandau Ballet days was Through the Barricades which I still sing along with Gold and True. “After Spandau Ballet

disbanded, I embarked on a solo career signing to EMI and recording my first album, The State of Play. “After leaving EMI, I formed my own record company, Slipstream Records and my first release was the single, Build Me Up from the film, When Saturday Comes.” Tony admits to being more confident now. “In the early days I was insecure. I now find sport and the gym take my mind off work. I also play for the Arsenal celeb team.” Not just that though, Tony regularly takes part in charity work. Earlier on this year he trekked through Venezuela helping to raise funds for Action Medical Research. In 1996 Tony embarked on an orchestral tour of Europe along with Joe Cocker, playing to 500,000 people in six weeks. He then signed a joint deal with Polygram TV and released his next solo album. He has collaborated with various dance acts and DJs such as Tin Tin Out. Next year is busy for Tony as he tours Europe. In February alone he will be singing live in

New Heads at Merchants Taylors – Claire Tao and David Wickes.

Appointment of new Heads at Merchant Taylors’ Schools MERCHANT Taylors has appointed two new Heads to lead the Boys’ and Girls’ Senior Schools in 2018. Mrs Claire Tao, who is currently Deputy Head at the City of London School for Girls (CLSG), will take over as Headmistress from Mrs Louise Robinson when she leaves at Easter. Mr David Wickes will join Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School as Headmaster in September 2018. David is currently the Deputy Headmaster at Warwick School. These key appointments will lead the Schools into

the next important stage of their development as top North West independent day schools. Working closely together the new Heads will guide these historic establishments through an exciting period of celebration and change as they move toward the 400th anniversary of its foundation in 2020. The chair of Governors, Mrs Beverley Bell CBE, worked with a number of her colleagues, assisted by Saxton Bampfylde, to recruit Claire and David. She said: “We were impressed by the calibre and

number of applicants the posts attracted. “Both are highly qualified for the roles and are experts in male and female pedagogy which is crucial for the Schools’ single sex education focus. “In addition, they will work closely together, along with the Heads of the Primary and Junior Schools, Janet Thomas and Julie Yardley, to maximise the opportunities for all our pupils to mix together outside the classroom – one of the key unique benefits of our 4-18 family of schools set up.”

Green waste collection winter suspension HOUSEHOLDS are reminded not to leave their green bins out for collection between now and February 25 as the green waste collection service is suspended for the winter due to the seasonal drop in demand. Councillor Steve Munby,

Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “We have placed stickers on all bins to confirm the arrangements and crews normally tasked with collecting green waste will be redeployed during the winter period”. Both of Liverpool’s

Household Waste Recycling Centres at Old Swan and Otterspool take green waste and are open every day and there will be various collection points for Christmas trees after Christmas. For more details please visit www.liverpool. gov.uk/bins

Tree up, presents wrapped… prescriptions ordered? TREE up, presents wrapped… prescriptions ordered? With the festive season upon us, the NHS in Liverpool is encouraging people not to forget about their health as they make last-minute preparations for Christmas. NHS Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is reminding people of the benefits of getting organised in advance if you take regular medication, and of knowing the best place to get advice and treatment if you do become ill over Christmas. Local GP, Dr Fiona Lemmens, Urgent & Emergency Care Lead for NHS Liverpool CCG said: “Many of us are busy buying presents, planning Christmas meals, and preparing for the arrival of relatives at this time of year, but thinking about your health now could also make Christmas a much more relaxing holiday. “If you take medicine on a regular basis to help manage a long-term condition like high blood pressure, diabetes or asthma – or if have any children or relatives who do – now is the time to check that you have enough medication left to last you through the Christmas and New Year period. “Don’t risk being caught short over the Bank Holidays, when your GP practice will be closed. Make sure that you plan ahead, and leave enough time to order and collect repeat prescriptions before Christmas Eve.” While no one wants to be ill over Christmas, it’s also really important to plan ahead and think about the best ways to access healthcare services over the Christmas period, just in case you do suddenly become unwell.

Dr Fiona Lemmens added: “It’s useful to keep a wellstocked medicine cupboard at home. This will ensure that you’re prepared for dealing with any common illnesses like coughs, colds, sickness and diarrhoea yourself at home. Your local pharmacy will be happy to give you some advice on what to include. “If you do need to see a health professional, don’t forget that even when your GP surgery is closed over Christmas, you can still see a local GP through the GP Out-of-Hours service by contacting NHS 111. “You can also visit any of the city’s local NHS Walk-in Centres for treatment and advice about a wide range of minor illnesses and injuries. They are open from early until late, including over weekends and bank holidays during the Christmas period, and you don’t need an appointment either – you can just walk in and be seen.” Christmas opening times for local NHS Walk-in Centres across the city are: n Liverpool City Walk-in Centre: Christmas Day – Closed, Boxing Day 09.0018:00, New Year’s Day 09:00 – 18:00. n Old Swan Walk-in Centre: Christmas Day 07:00 – 22:00, Boxing Day 07:00 – 22:00, New Year’s Day 07:00 – 22:00. n South Liverpool Walk-in Centre: Christmas Day 09:00 – 17:00, Boxing Day 09:00 – 17:00, New Year’s Day 09:00 – 17:00. n Smithdown Children’s Walk-in Centre: Closed, Boxing Day 10:00 – 18:00, New Year’s Day 10:00 – 16:00. options to consider for when you need to see a health professional quickly but it’s not a 999 emergency: n GP – If you need medical attention your GP is your first point of contact for nonemergency illnesses which you can’t treat yourself, and will offer a same day appointment when it’s urgent. n GP Out of Hours – Even if your GP surgery is closed, you can still see a local GP out of opening hours by calling your usual practice number or dialling NHS 111. n Pharmacist – Get professional health advice on common winter illnesses, and the best medicines to treat them, right on the high street n NHS Walk-in Centres – Access treatment 365 days of the year for every day illnesses and minor injuries you can’t treat yourself at home. No need for an appointment – you can just walk in. n NHS 111 – Call if you need medical advice fast, but it’s not a 999 emergency. NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobiles. Dr Lemmens added: “It’s really important that people know where to go and how to get help and advice should they suddenly become ill over the Christmas period, and only use the city’s busy A&E departments or ambulance services in a genuine 999 emergency situation, for the treatment of very serious or life threatening situations such as strokes, heart attacks or major bleeding.” Further details of which local pharmacies and NHS Walk-in Centres are open are available on Liverpool CCG’s website at: www. liverpoolccg.nhs.uk

The contortionist VERA discovered her unusual talent when she was small and soon found out how to be the centre of attention wherever she was. The only dissenting voice came from Granny: “You’ll stick like that, mark my words.” Everyone else was charmed and entertained when Vera took up a posture, as she called the strange twisting of her limbs and body. The little girl would bounce into the room, fall on her face and bring her legs over her head and exclaim: “I’m a scorpion!”

Then she would spread-eagle herself over the lino, arms and legs twisted into alarming angles: “Look out for the nasty crab!” There seemed to be no end to Vera’s creativity. In the school playground she would curl into a ball and roll around among her squealing friends. Then she would make her arms and legs disappear as she wrapped herself around a tree like a snake. Vera grew into a vibrant, energetic young woman whose lithe, statuesque form attracted attention wherever she went. She was a talented dancer and became a

big hit among flappers doing the charleston in the smart ballrooms. Vera’s interpretation of the dance, with loose flying limbs, created a sensation. “You ought to be a contortionist,” said her friend Emily one evening as they sipped cocktails. “You’d be a sensation.” Vera’s talents were recognised when the circus came to Sefton Park. The clowns had been careering around the ring before enticing Vera and other spectators from the front row. She ended up twisting herself into a knot retrieving several balloons the clowns threw at her. The crowd thundered its approval. Vera was signed up as Lithe Limbed Loretta, the Amazonian Wonder. Balloons became a key part of her act as she wriggled and contorted herself over the sawdust. Wearing a flesh-coloured body stocking and flimsy costume she was able to achieve a rapid change of positions and postures. Night after night the crowd roared. balanced on her fingers. Everyone came to see her when the circus hit town – even Granny. Vera decided to put on something special for her family. She introduced her audience to The Turtle, a posture that required her to retract her head into her shoulders while tucking her limbs under her body. The effect was a triumph – it was just like watching a real turtle crawling on the beach. Instead of quickly resuming her normal shape, Vera’s face was flushed with discomfort and rising panic. The big top went silent with anticipation. Vera caught sight of a familiar face on the front row and yelled: “Granny – I’m stuck!” Her grandmother sprang into the ring, put a foot on Vera’s shoulder and twisted her granddaughter’s head. There was a click and Vera was free. She stood up, hugged Granny and acknowledged the relieved cheers of the crowd. They became a very successful double act. n Read my next Strange Tale – Eternally Young – in the February Link.

Children enjoy pre-Christmas party funded by local charity ON Tuesday 5th December, 100 children from local schools attended and enjoyed a pre-Christmas party at the Britannia Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool town centre sponsored and funded by the charity Merseyside Children’s Fund. The children enjoyed a buffet and were entertained by the leading children’s entertainer Mr Styks who played games with them, provided prizes including specially sculptured balloons and the whole party was supervised by Father

Christmas. The party ended with each child receiving a large goody bag that included a selection box kindly donated by the Tesco supermarket in Mather Avenue plus a toy, a colouring book and other “Goodies”. The charity raises funds and redistributes them to worthy causes on Merseyside and provides special equipment to individual underprivileged children that enhances the lives of the recipients and is run wholly by a small dedicated team of

volunteers who return all monies generated to the children without any deductions and ensure all monies raised on Merseyside are spent on Merseyside. Currently the committee and the Adelphi are promoting an afternoon tea dance to raise funds with a traditional full afternoon tea and professional demonstrations priced at only £15 per person, details can be obtained by phoning Jane, the events co-ordinator, on 0151 709 7200 or visiting the Adelphi anytime.

THANKS to Merseyside Civic Society member Dr Rob MacDonald for advance notice of the Lecture on ‘New Towns’ by Elain Harwood (Historic England) sponsored by The Liverpool Modernist Society and taking place at Liverpool John Moores University on January 16. As a city region with at least two new towns – Runcorn and Skelmersdale – in our area, this topic has a lot of local resonance.

New year, new you THE turn of the year is always a great time to plan for the future and what could be better than a plan to improve your health, figure and fitness? At our award-winning Gymophobics Centre on Allerton Road we work with ladies of all ages from teens to 70 plus and we offer something completely different to a conventional Gym. We recognise that Gyms are not everyone’s cup of tea, so we offer a high level of one to one support from our lovely instructors as an integral part of our service to help you get the very most out of your 30 minute sessions. We are delighted to have been nominated for the accolade of ‘Team of the Year’ at the annual national Gymophobics Awards Event in January. Most ladies attend two or three times each week and can be in and out in just 30 minutes! That’s why our ladies love it: they want great results, but they don’t want to spend hours to achieve them. Each member gets a personalised programme of gym sessions, home exercise and dietary advice, so no matter how unfit you may think you are when you start,

On a recent visit to our Centre, Donna Hubbard, the founder of Gymphobics said: “Lovely to meet all Claire’s lovely members and her great staff. Claire herself is Gymophobics through and through. Thank you so much.” you will find it easier than you ever thought possible to achieve great results. In fact, it is fair to say that our ‘air’ machine exercise circuit takes the work out of the workout! Our holistic programme ensures that weight loss and inch loss is achieved in weeks rather than months, but the health benefits are even more impressive. Expect to see dramatic improvements to your blood pressure, resting heart rate, joint mobility, strength and lung function. But that’s not

all! Within weeks you will be sleeping better and enjoying a big increase in your energy levels. Studies throughout the world show that improvements in aerobic fitness mean that the risk of heart attacks, stroke, thrombosis and Type 2 diabetes is significantly reduced, having a big impact on both quality and length of life. So, make 2018 the year that you turn your life around. You will love the attention you receive at Gymophobics and the beautiful feminine environment in our newly refurbished facility. You will love the friendliness of our staff and other members who will make you feel part of the ‘family’ from the day you arrive. Most of all of course you will love the results. But don’t take our word for it. Come along and see for yourself why Gymophobics are the fastest growing Weight & Inch Loss Centres in the UK. A YEAR 10 pupil at St Francis Xavier’s College has published two books based on his personal experience of having Asperger Syndrome. 15-year-old Daniel Hinnigan, from Garston, was diagnosed with Asperger’s – a form of autism – when he was age 11. Daniel has always been very open about his condition and has no problem explaining to other pupils about what it is like and how he feels. Keen to raise further awareness, the aspiring

writer penned a short story for the BBC Radio 2 500 Words competition about a boy called Jude who has Asperger Syndrome. Based primarily on Daniel’s life, he talks openly about dayto-day situations and the struggles he often faces. For Daniel, however, 500 words wasn’t enough and he went on to write a complete book called, ‘The Boy Who Was Different’. Daniel said: “My aim is to bring awareness about autism and Asperger’s. The

message I am trying to get across is that many people suffer with ASD and you might not even be aware. They may be people in your friendship group or even your family. If they have not had a diagnosis from a paediatrician it doesn’t mean they don’t have it.” Since then, Daniel has written and published a second instalment titled, ‘The Boy Who Was Different Growing Up’, which is based upon him maturing into a young man.

Dog of the month – Benson

BENSON is an eight-year-old Dorset Old Tyme Bulldog. He is the type of boy who makes everyone fall in love with him at first sight! He’s a senior Bulldog who will become an instant best friend, and he would be happy to spend the rest of his life sprawled on a duvet being fed. He is a little wobbly on his legs and can’t play as much as he’d like to, but he still enjoys a potter about and could potentially make a great companion for someone who isn’t very mobile themselves. Benson is currently in a foster home but if you call the centre on 0151 480 0660, they can arrange a meeting with this scrumptious boy. He gets along with other quiet dogs and can live with children aged 12 and over. If you think Benson could be the fourlegged friend you are looking for, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP. It’s open 12pm-4pm every day except

Time to plan for the year ahead HI GUYS and welcome to my first Life ‘n’ Style of 2018!! I hope you all had an amazing Christmas and wish everyone all the best for the New Year! If you have been reading my column for a while now you will know that each January I take to the drawing board and make a new life plan for the year ahead. I feel without one of these you just plod on and have no direction. I make a list of all that I got out of the year before that I didn’t do or get the previous year. A list of anything I could change. A list of what I want for the next year with regard to work, plans, holidays etc… I always think hopes are just dreams without a plan and direction so I was over the moon when I realised that Calum Best did the same thing but to support his theory he has brought out ‘The Best Me Life’. I first came across this on Instagram noticing a few quotes that I strongly believed in. Once I read a little bit further I thought we are both on the same page! He

points out that you should stop going with the flow. Write down your goals, be dedicated, focused and be thankful where it is due. Check out www.bestmelife.co It’s priced at £29 and is definitely worth getting. Have a look at @ thebestmelife on Instagram which will show you a little bit more. In the winter months your skin always looks a bit dull, feels dry and just isn’t at its best. I am a strong believer in body brushing and do it every day either of a morning before a shower or of an evening before a bath but what I have started doing over the past few weeks is facial brushing. After having a little moan whilst getting my nails done at The Gallery, Jan who is my nail technician and also a really good

naturally but mine have cleared up for the first time in many years. The only thing I have changed is using this regime so if it’s something you suffer form then give it a go. I was invited to the Very press day a couple of a weeks ago and as soon as I walked in fell in love with this Pink Tuxedo dress. The colour is what I call ‘The Perfect Pink’. I instantly knew I was going to need this to wear the following day to judge the LMI model competition in Birmingham. Not only can you wear it as a

friend, suggested I give Aveda Radiant Awakening Ritual a go each morning. It’s a gentle face brush that you use followed by a face oil. The brush gently exfoliates the skin and prepares the cells to take in the nourishment from the tulasāra™ radiant oleation oil. The kit is priced at £65 and is worth every penny. I actually had quite a bit of milia in my eyes. If you suffer from these tiny cysts you will know that they are a killer to get rid of. You either need to get them popped with a needle or just wait a really long time for them to go

Reviewing your year AROUND this time of the year, some of us will review the year we’ve had. This can highlight some great things that have happened to us or some negative things. Certainly Christmas and New Year can be an emotional time. Whilst my quest for you is to have a positive life and help guide you through your ups and downs, I have put together some points here that I hope will highlight some positive experiences you have had

this year, as well as trying to help take you forward. Use a piece of paper or your phone to help take some notes. n Your accomplishments: What did you do, what did you overcome, what did you achieve? n What did you learn? We can all be hit with some tough situations and it’s important for our wellbeing that we try and take some positives from those situations or challenges n How do you feel about the year? How do you rate it? How satisfied

are you? n What’s missing? What didn’t you do this year? What didn’t you achieve? By answering this question, it sets you up for the next part... n Planning for the new year: Hopefully by doing this exercise it will give you some new questions to ask yourself and will help you plan for a better, more fulfilling new year Hope it helps! Thank you again for reading my articles this year and

dress but you can double the wear and use as a blazer too so it’s definitely worth investing in! I’m loving these Colour Block jumpers from Pretty Little Thing at the min. Priced at £20 I have all three colour ways and pimped mine up by wearing them as dresses with over the knee boots of an evening or as jumper of a day time with jeans. They are super comfy and warm too.

Wonderful Goa! By Moira Hesketh

IT’S that time of year where we give a bit of a plug to our friends in Goa, which has become one of our favourite holiday destinations. It’s a great place to just chill out and relax in the sun, especially in the winter months of course. Admittedly, stray dogs and cows wandering the street (and even the beaches!) are not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s part of the ambiance and you soon get used to it! At this time of year the sunshine is virtually guaranteed (average temperature approx. 30C), not a drop of rain and hardly a cloud in the sky. There are dozens of top quality hotels to choose from and there is accommodation to

suit all tastes and price ranges. The people you meet (hotel staff, waiters, bar staff, shop assistants, taxi drivers) are just wonderful and really make the holiday. There are shops, markets and restaurants galore and while you are in Goa you must visit one of the many markets. There’s locally produced clothing, spices, tea, jewellery, hand-made toys, bags and much more. Travel to Goa with a halfempty case and buy your shirts, shorts, tops, etc while you’re there! And don’t forget to use your very best bargaining skills! This former Portuguese colony has miles of tropical sandy beaches but there is more to Goa than beaches! The old town of Goa was the capital of Goa in the time of Portuguese rule. You will find many churches and cathedrals and the highlight of Old Goa is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which houses the well preserved remains of St. Francis Xavier. And you simply can’t visit Goa without a trip to the jewellers! Goa is famous for its many jewellers and there are so many you don’t know where to start. We have always been so pleased with GM Jewellers in Tito’s Road (Baga) that I

absolutely have to give them a mention. My friend takes all her friends’ and families’ repairs, re-designs, etc, over to Gulzar and Mohamed at G M, who have been in Tito’s Road since 1987, and she has enjoyed an excellent service at excellent prices for many years. Show them a photo of something you like and they’ll make it up for you! They can make whatever you want and at an absolute fraction of the cost here and of course, as you’d expect, the work is all fully guaranteed: G M Jewellers, Tito’s Road, Baga, Goa: www. gmjewellers.com; email; gd@ gmjewellers.com - look them up on TripAdvisor too. And there’s a great tailor’s

shop in Candolim (Versace de Goa – great name!). They do absolutely everything from minor alterations to tailormade suits, shirts, leathers or even wedding suits. Great quality and a perfect fit. Take a favourite item or show them a photo and they’ll make it up for you. Brilliant! They’re near the HDFC ATM Bank on the main road – check them out on google, facebook and tripadvisor (and ask for Rashid or Syd if you do call in). If you haven’t yet visited Goa, give it a try! At this time of year where else will you find guaranteed sunshine, great people, great food, amazing prices and wonderful sunsets. No wonder people go back to Goa year after year!

South in action in their recent home game against Vauxhall Motors.

South to stay at top until 2018 By Jim Stanway

SOUTH Liverpool FC’s final West Cheshire League Division One game of 2017 saw the team retain a healthy lead at the top of the table. A 1-1 draw at nearest rivals Vauxhall Motors at a wet and snowy Ellesmere Port saw the team equalise through substitute Brad Williams with five minutes to go. Vauxhall had reduced the deficit at the top to seven points (with two games in hand) with a hard-fought 2-0 win in the reverse fixture at Jericho Lane three weeks previously when South paid the price for failing to take

their chances in the first half. A 2-0 win at lowly West Kirby with two goals from leading scorer Cameron Dalton when some of their main rivals’ fixtures were rained off has meant that the first team have now completed almost half of their league fixtures and have played all of their main rivals at least once. The reserves have had two solid wins in the last month, the highlight being a 2-1 win at previously unbeaten Ellesmere Port Town with goals from captain David Cringle and striker Bobby Murphy. A 2-0 home win over new

look Willaston, with goals from midfielders Jordan McGowan and Andy Walker, has meant that the team have three games in hand over league leaders Hale and are only six points behind. The youth team retained their unbeaten record with a last gasp equaliser in a 2-2 draw at much improved Vauxhall Motors. Two goals down in the first half, leading scorer Liam Murphy pulled one back before half-time. Going down to 10 men midway through the second half, the equaliser came in the last minute with a superb chip from centre forward Michael Kielty.

Still plenty to play for in 2018 By Chris Thomas

AS 2017 comes to a close, so does the first half of the hockey season for Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club. All three men’s teams are well placed in their respective leagues with the men’s first and third teams still in with a chance of backto-back promotions. The men’s first team sit in third place in a tightly contested league, having only lost one game in the first half of the season. If the lads continue to keep up their high standards and convert the draws into wins they stand a good chance of ending the season on a high. The men’s third team have recovered from a slow start with six wins and a draw in the last seven games. Like

Fiat offers a visual feast with its Tipo By Tim Saunders

the men’s first team they also sit third in the league with their promotion hopes still alive. The men’s seconds are the pick of the bunch, ending 2017 at the top of the league. A strong start to 2018 will see them in a position to make a title charge. The league has been more of a challenge for the ladies’ section of the club, in what has arguably been a transitional season so far for the teams. Although there has been plenty of highs,

there has also been some disappointing results for all teams and they hope to put these right in the second half of the season. Still plenty to play for! There will also be chances in both regional and national competitions. Special mention should go to the men’s first team and ladies’ seconds who both managed to navigate difficult ties in the national competition at the start of December to ensure their cup runs continue into 2018.

DESIGN is becoming more thought provoking. I notice this as I admire the new Fiat Tipo station wagon. There’s barely a straight panel on it. This has led me to cast my mind back to vehicles of the past. It seems that curves started to become fashionable in the ‘60s on the likes of the E-type Jaguar but many cars of that period were still boxy and this was the case right through to the ‘80s, even the ‘90s where straight lines still prevailed on the likes of the Vauxhall Cavalier. Of course this is a very general perception and there were exceptions to the rule such as TVR and the more specialist manufacturers. Over the next 20 years those straight lines were gradually rounded off, think of the Ford Granada and Vauxhall Omega. But we now live in a different era where manufacturers have gone back to the drawing board creating vehicles with a combination of straight lines and curves. The Fiat Tipo is a good example of this. The front wheel arches are a tasteful blend of slightly boxy curvaceousness which seamlessly blend into the equally well crafted bonnet. It looks chunkier from the side than head on. It’s a good effect. This is offset by the two-tone 16-inch alloy

wheels. Such a visual feast is a surprise from Fiat which has raised its game of late. The build quality is improved too when compared to Fiats of the past. Like a good recipe, sprinkled with the right amount of herbs and garnishes, the designers have done a Gordon Ramsay, successfully giving the Tipo station wagon a special personality. It has more than 500 litres load carrying capacity making it attractive as both a family car and a business proposition. “Is the bumper meant to be like that?” I ask the delivery driver pointing at the rear section which seems to jut out as if it has been forcibly pulled out of place. “Oh yes,” he chuckles. It’s as if the fabricating machine has gone too far. Fiat, which is the world’s seventh largest car maker, also owns one of America ’s most well-known car manufacturers, Chrysler. So the big American front

grille on the Tipo estate, which is very much of our time, is no surprise and helps this Italian cut a strong presence on the road. The boot is not so successful, looking weaker than the front in my opinion. And the back side panels have a hint of the Honda Accord estate about them. A generous smattering of chrome is both successful and appreciated by me. There’s a comfortable driving position, although the seat fabric seems a little thin as I feel my young son’s foot in the base of my back. It feels a sporty car and the diesel unit – coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox – can have a surprising sense of urgency.
