PLACE OF THE OAKS By Stephen Guy
TOXTETH Park was heavily wooded for centuries and part was once fenced off as the exclusive hunting forest of the monarch. The name Aigburth, originally Ackeberth, is thought to mean place of the oaks from the Anglo Saxon ac (oak) combined with a derivative of beran meaning to produce. Fishing was widespread off Aigburth – the river teemed with life. Salmon were so plentiful that in 1697 they supplied not only Liverpool but towns within a 20-mile radius. Cistercian monks held land in Aigburth: in 1291 their possessions were recorded in the ecclesiastical taxation documents of Pope Nicholas IV. Liverpool’s oldest occupied house is Stanlaw Grange, a converted sandstone barn dating from about this time. It was linked to Stanlaw Abbey on the other side of the Mersey. In the 19th century Aigburth developed from a quiet backwater into a prosperous suburb. Aigburth Road, pictured on a 1905 postcard, remains a bustling highway and shopping area. Research reveals some fascinating incidents over the years in and around the road. A young man called Wilfred Walton was fined £2 and costs in 1851 for brutally treating a donkey hired out by an old woman during the day. Police were called after he threw a brick at the animal, tearing out a piece of flesh. In 1876 Aigburth Road was blighted by people racing horse-drawn traps, reported the

Liverpool Mercury. One was seafarer William Davies who was hauled before magistrates for furiously driving along the road. Prosecutors asked the bench to make an example of Davies and he was fined 10 shillings (50p) and costs – or 14 days in prison. Christmas 1894 was not the season of goodwill when 22-year-old John Smith broke into St Anne’s Church – he stole a clothes brush and cash bag belonging to the churchwardens. Smith, alias William Webb, admitted breaking into six other churches.
When arrested he was wearing boots stolen from another church and the keys to the safe were in his pocket. A woman died in March 1940 after a freak traffic accident. Alice Hughes, 56-year-old wife of a tram driver, was crossing Aigburth Road when her shopping basket caught in the handle of a passing car. Mrs Hughes was swung against the back of the car, causing fatal injuries. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10am to 5pm every day, admission free.

Ricky Tomlinson talks to Tim Saunders RICKY Tomlinson is probably best known for playing Jim Royle in the Royle Family. His catchphrase ‘My arse!’ is equally memorable. In 2001 he was National Television Comedy Actor of the Year and was awarded Best Performance in Network Drama by the Royal Television Society. Ricky is a fine actor and director Ken Loach paid tribute: “His work – and comedy – springs from a life that has seen hardship and struggle and many changes in fortune. From his early days in the building trade and as one of the heroic Shrewsbury Two, he has always known which side he is on, as those who have experienced his generosity and loyalty will testify”. Britain’s first building strike was called in 1972. Ricky became a member of the Wrexham Strike Action Committee and peacefully picketed building sites but was later arrested and found

He has made one topselling comedy video entitled Laughter My Arse and written two books. The first, his autobiography, was called Ricky (available in all good bookshops priced £17.99) and was a number one bestseller. “So far it has sold half a million copies. It was in 2002 that my wife Rita sold it to Time Warner and I still
can’t believe it”. Since this phenomenal success, Rita has become Ricky’s agent. Given that she knows his availability and the roles he likes, she insists it’s no problem negotiating his acting work. Ricky has now been commissioned to write a third book, which will be about his life in showbiz. In addition he has won 10 regional awards for comedy,
personality and drama. His CD single Are You Lookin’ at Me was released in 2001 and reached no. 18. So what’s Ricky up to now? Driving Ferraris and jetting abroad at every opportunity? Not a bit of it! “We do have a big caravan that we take to Benidorm now and again, but to be honest when I’m not acting I’m doing DIY, which I’m not bad at.”

Dog of the month – Roger Light up a Life Appeal 2017 BOUNCY Roger is a fiveyear-old Labrador hound cross. He is a very playful chap, particularly when it comes to other dogs. He is well mannered with his canine chums and very tolerant of the livelier ones! He’s a friendly dog in general and happy to go out for walkies with many of the volunteers. Roger is looking for a calm household, with a family that will be patient with him, as he isn’t overly keen on being handled and can be aloof at times.
Roger doesn’t like to be left alone so will need a family with someone at home most of the day. He is a huge fan of other dogs and would benefit from living with a sociable canine companion. Roger is a clever boy and his hound characteristics make for a very curious dog
so he will need to be kept busy. If you think Roger could be the four-legged friend you are looking for, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP. It’s open 12pm-4pm every day except Wednesdays, when it is closed. You can also call on 0300 303 0292, 8am-8pm Mon-Fri and 9am5pm Sat and Sun. www. dogstrust.org.uk. AT WOODLANDS Hospice we know Christmas can be a very difficult time if you have lost a loved one, or if you cannot be someone you love. Our Light up Life appeal gives you the opportunity to celebrate the life of a loved one by dedicating a light on our Christmas trees in December. Our beautiful Christmas tree at the Hospice is a truly amazing sight, seeing it adorned with hundreds of lights and knowing each light is dedicated to someone has such a special meaning. We will also have a tree of
lights at St Andrew’s Church in Maghull. By dedicating a light to your loved ones, you will not only be celebrating their life, you will be helping us to support our patients and their families at a time they need it most. Each name dedicated will be carefully recorded in the Book of Life, which will be available to view at the services being held at the Hospice and at St Andrew’s Church, Maghull. You can dedicate a light to anyone you choose. They do not need to have been a
patient at the Hospice – they could be someone who cannot be with you at this time of year who you will miss very much. You will also be able to view the Book of Life online, after our services take place or at the Hospice throughout 2018. To dedicate a light to a loved one online visit www. lightupalife4woodlands.org Alternatively, call Carole Riley on 0151 529 4143 for more information, to make a dedication over the phone by debit/credit card or to have a form posted out to you.

Loving homes needed MERCURY is a beautiful, three-year-old fluffy cat. He was neglected by his previous owners and was left outdoors having to fend for himself for over 12 months. His lovely coat became matted and flea infested, his health badly deteriorated. Rescued by neighbours he was brought to our local Sanctuary where he is now doing well, although still a little insecure. He is a friendly cat who likes to get out so will need a home with a garden. TIKKA is a striking fouryear-old tabby. She is a very timid due to a very bad start in her earlier life. She was found lying next
TIKKA
MERCURY to her owner who had died days before. She would blossom in a quiet indoor home, without other pets and with an experienced owner who could give her the patience, love and understanding that she so much deserves.

Come into the garden, Maude HOPKIN was a rogue but he knew his aspidistras from his hostas and his primroses from his pansies. The garden was his domain, a kingdom where he ruled supreme, carrying his rake like a sword of state. He led a solitary life among the greenhouses and flower beds apart from when he needed help with harvesting the vegetable patch. Mr and Mrs Browne had inherited Hopkin when they bought Windy Nook. The half-timbered villa in Mossley Hill, with spectacular views, had gardens stretching over two acres. Mrs Browne liked the twinkle in the gardener’s eyes which lit up his weather-beaten face. Hopkin enjoyed pulling people’s legs when it came to all things herbaceous, perennial or annual. He was a dab hand with cod Latin, for example. Visitors would ask the name of some obscure plant: Hopkin responded by reeling off a long Latin name made up on the spot. Those in the know thought it hilarious. Hopkin had no real interest in the world outside his kingdom. It was 1937 and war clouds were gathering but that was of no interest to him. All he wanted was to nurture and nourish, hoe and rake throughout each carefree day. “My niece Maude is coming down from Pendle Hill and staying for a few days,” said Mr Browne. “Please show her around the garden. “She doesn’t want to get her hands
dirty but she has a strong academic interest in plants and flowers.” Hopkin’s eyes lit up under his battered straw hat. This was going to be fun. Maude was a vision of style and beauty, drawing admiring glances wherever she went. “Come into the garden, Maude,” said Mr Browne. “Hopkin will show you his specialities.” Maude was wearing a stunning outfit straight from her dressmaker’s.
She shuddered when Hopkin came close and leered at her. Walking along the gravel walks, Hopkin made up a Latin name. Maude instantly pulled him up: “That is not the name for witch hazel!” she exclaimed, steely eyes glaring. “I suppose next you’ll be telling me there are fairies at the bottom of the garden.” Hopkin clammed up. He knew he’d met his match. The next day he noticed someone had been picking herbs. A strange smell lingered, as if somebody had been boiling something in the potting shed. “I tell you I saw them,” said Mrs Browne one morning. “Two squat little men at the far end of the garden.” “I’ll tell Constable Hughes,” said Mr Browne. The officer called round later but he was accompanied by a detective and police surgeon. Hopkin lay sprawled in the shrubbery, his lifeless eyes staring at the sky. “Looks like a heart attack,” said the surgeon. “But what are these small footprints? Only children could make them.” “Or gnomes,” said the detective, a student of folklore. Maude looked down from the window, a faint smile on her lips. n Read my next Strange Tale – A Hand on her Shoulder – in the December Link.

One of my favourite months of the year LIFE ‘n’ STYLE
– with JADE AINSWORTH
www.jadeainsworth gossip.co.uk HI guys and welcome to my November Life ‘n’ Style. November is one of my fav months of the year and that’s because it’s Christmas decky time!! I just love getting home from work, getting a nice bath and putting new pj’s on, sitting back and admiring all the decorations with a glass of Baileys in my hand and The White Company ‘Winter‘ candles burning in the background! If you are about to start your Christmas shopping and wondering where to begin then I would thoroughly recommend checking out Matalan. The store in Wavertree has had a huge refurb and all I can say is wow!! The homeware section is amazing if you need any new cushions, throws or bedding and there are many more personal items. I know that no matter what presents I get at Christmas time something I can never have enough of are pyjamas and loungewear. Over the festive period there is nothing better than chilling at home with new pj’s and watching Christmas movies. They are things that you don’t really buy for yourself but make perfect gifts. I recently did a shoot on the new Eden Floor i n the Shankly Hotel so here are a few different styles and designs suitable for all ages and the best thing about this range is that nothing will break the bank but they all look and feel really expensive!!
Flannel Button Purple Check Bundle (£14) When it comes to snug seasonal sleepwear, luxurious feel flannel PJ sets make the perfect gift. Fashioned in a purple and pink check design, this signature duo features a button front fastening long sleeve pyjama top, together with matching elasticated waist bottoms in a straight leg fit. This classic set comes bundled in a pretty silver glitter ribbon all ready to easily place in a gift bag! Tie Split Lounge Top (£10) and Pink Stripe Lounge Leggings (£12) Super soft pink lounge top, featuring lace up v-neck with eyelet decoration and a split back detail for added style. Paired with luxe
bottoms, both of which are fashioned with metallic foil moons and stars. Ideal for Christmas presents, this novel gift set comes bundled in a pretty silver glitter ribbon.
lounge high-waisted leggings in soft ribbed fabric, pink striped design, together with cuffed ankles and a statement satin bow. Perfect for lazy Christmas days or cosy nights these are so comfortable but stylish too. All part of the mix and match range. New Wool Touch Loungewear Hoody (£14) and Bottoms (£12) I think that out of them all these are the comfiest and are perfect for all ages and sizes. Made in a super soft wool touch, with a grey marl ribbed design, this is the perfect lounge set to laze around in. For £26 for this duo it’s definitely going to be top of my list! Moon and Star PJ Gift Set (£14) This is a bit of a younger style in grey waffle fabric, this super cute duo features a crew neck long sleeve top together with cuffed
Pink Stain Stripe PJ Set (£16) Lastly is the one that sent my social media into uproar!! The Pink Stain Stripe PJ Set for £16!! I put a pic of this up online and had sooooo many people message me to say they went into the store to purchase but it wasn’t available! Sorry this was my fault as it doesn’t land until November but it’s definitely going to be a sell-out so make sure you go in store or get it online! It looks and feels amazing!! Why pay £100’s of pounds when you can pay under £20 in Matalan??!! n Photos shot on the Eden floor in Shankly Hotel by Lynne Carville Photography, Hairfields for hair and Carla Lawson for makeup.

Jenny Kenny: La La Land Glamour in Liverpool!
JENNY Kenny Designer Dress Agency is a new shop in Briardale Road (corner of Penny Lane) and a star-studded party on 12th October saw the Grand Opening. Stocking carefully selected, pre-loved items from many luxury designers, Jenny Kenny is a
real paradise for Liverpool fashionistas, stocking highend women’s clothes, shoes and accessories. Jenny said: “Everyone loves a designer label and we’re delighted to make high-end fashion much more accessible. “We opened a few weeks ago and already the girls are
going crazy for the top quality items we have on offer. Both my sister Alison and I have spent time in the States and fell in love with a little boutique dress agency in LA. The idea of bringing a bit of Hollywood La La Land glamour back to Liverpool just made perfect sense.”

Happiness is singing with Mersey Harmony IN 1976, Merseyside was invaded by two kinds of bird: the ladybird and the all-female a cappella group Mersey Harmony. This warm chorus, of women from all ages and walks of life, shares a love of singing, laughter, and friendship. Mersey Harmony were founding members of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers and have competed nationally and internationally for the past 40 years.
The chorus frequently performs at weddings, festivals, and events across the North West. Members receive vocal coaching from their M.D. Luke Freeney, a gold medallist barbershop singer. On November 11 they are excited to offer a free workshop and four weeks of vocal coaching to anyone who wishes to give their vocal chords some exercise. Mersey Harmony are always happy to welcome new members and visitors

Stoneycroft begin with a bang By Mick Titherington
A vehicle for America By Tim Saunders
THAT is my opinion of the fourth generation Lexus RX450h Sport. Why? It’s the type of SUV (sports utility vehicle) the Americans like, ultra luxurious inside, large and its hybrid credentials help the driver feel that they are no depleting the earth’s resources, too much anyway. Its predecessors have been extremely popular in the States, which means that this one will go down extremely well, too. It is easy to imagine it cruising the large roads over there and being very much at home. The poor British motorist can but dream of large traffic free roads or embark on their journeys during incredibly anti-social hours. This RX is certainly a striking vehicle with an expensive unique design. I am unsure of the massive black grille at the front but it is certainly striking and on opening the door of the large sonic white SUV there really is a surprise. A red interior. That feels American too. The first time you see it it very nearly takes your breath away. It’s quite dark inside until of course the £1,295 electrically operated pan roof cover retracts revealing a large glass roof, the front part of which tilts and slides. And it’s supremely comfortable too. Few cars come equipped with heated and cooled front leather seats but they’re in the Lexus. Usually on a hot summer’s day leather is sticky but that’s certainly not the case in the RX450h. And as you first acquaint yourself with it time is required to adjust to the new surroundings. It’s not just a matter of jumping in and driving off. But it doesn’t take long to understand where all the controls are located. We travel to London to visit Caroline’s uncle and the automatic gearbox makes light work of the motorway cruise allowing the driver a leisurely experience. However, if more engaging driving is required then there are paddle-shifts either side of the steering wheel and the gearbox can be driven as a manual. It makes swift progress and is a more than
capable over-taker. The sat nav is one of the more complicated on the market to operate we find. On our return journey, once we finally fathom how to use it it proceeds to take us an hour and a half from St John’s Wood to get out of the capital seemingly taking us round in circles. For some reason it wants to take us to the A3 despite us requesting the M25. Although it’s a Sunday the traffic is horrendous and Londoners are unfamiliar with patience. Pedestrians walk out in front of you, cyclists nudge past, vehicles jostle for position from your left and right. But it is nice to know that approximately up to 30mph the RX travels on electric power as long as the driver’s right foot is fairly light. The moment you push a little too heavily the 3.5-litre V6 24-valve petrol engine kicks in. The whole experience is stressful, to say the least. The only consolation is that the sheer size of the RX keeps other irate motorists in their place. It quickly becomes clear why there are so many 4x4s around the capital. ALL three Stoneycroft FC sides went goal crazy as they kicked off their respective seasons. The Combination side notched up over 30 goals in their first four fixtures, winning three by overpowering their opponents without really getting out of first gear. Unfortunately some shambolic defending proved to be their undoing when they went down to a highly competitive Kirkby side despite scoring four in a nine-goal thriller. Going forward this side looks the business, creating chances at will almost every time they attack.
Chances have to be taken though as in the Northern game when they hit 14 past the luckless visitors. Sadly that was not the case at Kirkby when chances went begging and with a leaky defence they were made to pay the price. Manager Paddy McBride saw this game as a glitch and is confident that they won’t suffer many more losses as he addresses the problems at the back. Croft got back to winning ways putting another four past Jaguar Rovers, who could only manage two in reply. The Under-17 side are in similar rampant mood and remain unbeaten by ratcheting up a goal tally that the other sides can only
envy. In their latest encounter against Kaalmo they went into the break 1-0 down only to strike back in breathtaking style with six second half goals. They are certainly fulfilling their promise and pre-season predictions of honours look to be on the money. The Vets have had a stop-start season so far with the weather interrupting their programme. In the games played they have had mixed fortunes, but have given a good account of themselves and the expectation is that results will follow. In a closely fought encounter they lost out to a competent REMYCA side 3-1.

Lessons from the Gorge A COUPLE of weeks ago some clients of mine and I went on a gorge walk (part of this year’s residential training weekend). When I was planning on putting this into the weekend, I’d checked it out a few times and thought it wouldn’t be too challenging. However...... As we started it, it became clear that what I thought we were going to do and what we were actually about to do were two completely different things. Basically, we were doing a kind of rock climb, over and around boulders while going through waterfalls and as we started it one of the women in the group described herself as being ‘terrified’. As we made our ascent up the gorge, it became more and more challenging and just before the end of it we had two vertical climbs to get to the top. Even I almost ‘had a moment’. It was scary. There was such relief once we got to the top and we were actually almost 300 feet higher than our starting point. But here’s the thing…..if we had discussed what we were going to do at the start of it then we wouldn’t
have done it. If we’d looked at it and seen the height of what we were about to climb, we wouldn’t have done it. But what we did was to focus on one tiny area at a time. Get over that and then focus on the next tiny area. The same process can be used for
our other goals. Initially, we can look at something and say “I’ll never be able to do that” or “I’ll never get that”. However, if we actually break it down and focus on one tiny piece at a time, achieve that, and then move into to the next piece then, all of a sudden, we get closer to our goal. And during the journey our momentum and confidence grows. But if we never actually take those first steps, we’ll never move forward and we’ll end up staying where we are while everyone else who takes action moves on. So, with that in mind, what do you need to do today to help move you forward? n My final ‘Women Only’ Boxercise and Weight training programmes will be starting shortly. These are the last programmes I will be running this year and there are only four places left in each programme. For further details please contact me.

They will be shy when they first meet you but in the right home will soon learn to trust you. Just to let you know – we always do home-checks, no exceptions. We’re not interested in your possessions, we just want to check that any animal we have rescued is going to a safe environment. And it gives you an opportunity to ask us any questions too. If you are interested in our work or would maybe like to support us then why not visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ GarstonAnimalRescue. We are also always glad of donated towels and unwanted clean bedding for the animals. Or, if you’d like to visit our small Charity Shop it’s at 62 Aigburth Road, Liverpool L17 7BN, tel 0151 727 0515, maybe check first they’re open. Volunteers welcomed also. If you are interested please contact us on 07745 167170 or 0151 494 0470.

South stay on course Alder FC make solid start By Jim Stanway
DESPITE a defeat in the first round of the Northern Counties Championship, South Liverpool FC remain on course to regain the West Cheshire League first division title and to retain the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup. Two wins in the first and second rounds of the Liverpool Challenge Cup, against Liver Academy and Page Celtic, have resulted in a third round date with Liverpool County Premier League outfit Custys on November 4. A 10-0 win over lowly Liver Academy, with four goals for both Cameron Dalton and Brad Williams, was a record win in that competition while the 2-1 second round win over Page
Celtic was much closer with veterans Kevin Martin and Gary Dunning (penalty) both on the scoresheet. Two home wins in the league, against Ashville and Upton AA, have maintained a four-point lead at the top of the table. A headed winner from substitute Cameron Dalton with five minutes to go saw South squeeze past Upton AA while the team were impressive in defeating second placed Ashville 2-0 with goals from Alex Woodcock and Mason Nevitt. Since the LINK last went to print, the reserves have played only three games, all cup ties, and there has been progress in the Liverpool County FA Junior Cup with wins over FC Salle and AFC Kirkby by 3-0 and 6-2
respectively. The third round sees a trip to Aintree Villa on 11 November. The team were eliminated from the league cup on penalties by old rivals Maghull Reserves but have only suffered one league defeat all season and remain in contention for the league title with several games in hand. The youth team stride on imperiously and are an impressive 11 points clear in the West Cheshire League youth division after seven matches with seven successive wins. The team have scored 33 goals in these games with the goals being shared around the team although the leading goalscorer is Liam Murphy with eight goals.

IN their first season in the Premier Division of the Liverpool Premier League, Alder have made a solid start to their campaign. Stand-out results have seen a 2-1 away victory against East Villa, Shaun Davis netting; a 4-2 home victory against Custy’s and progression to the second round of the Challenge Cup care of a penalty victory against MSB Woolton. In the local derby, the two teams based at the club faced each other for the first time with Liverpool Nalgo the opposition. In a tight affair, Nalgo were affected by a first half injury to Anthony Holden. The balance of play shifted
First team continue their excellent form By Chris Thomas
LIVERPOOL Sefton Hockey men’s first team has continued their form from last year into the new season. It was always going to be a tough act to follow trying to beat last season’s achievements when the team won the league and gained promotion into the North League. Despite the leap in standard the team has won their first three league games. An opening day victory against Crewe Vagrants was followed by wins against Urmston and Deeside Ramblers. The 5-1 victory over Crewe was notable as it was the first competitive match played under new
captain Aaron Robinson. This didn’t seem to put off the old skipper, though, as the man of the match award went to Peter Kenyon, who had stepped down after two seasons in charge. There are still some tough games and long distance away trips to
come before Christmas but the team can approach them with high hopes following such a positive start to the season. It has been a mixed start for the rest of the teams in the club. There have been highs, such as the Ladies 5’s 13-0 win against Wigan, but
there have also been some disappointing defeats for all teams. A number of fixtures have also been lost to the elements, with the Ladies 3s in particular suffering bad luck with the weather. Two weeks in a row the team turned up ready to play, only for sudden downpours to make the pitch unplayable. The girls are hoping for a warm, dry winter! The start of the season isn’t all about the hockey either; September saw a very successful beer pong tournament, fancy dress was the name of the day in October for the Halloween party and everyone is now getting their special jumpers ready for the Christmas festivities!
to Alder after the first half hour and goals from Kyle Mulby and Peter Moore saw the team clinch victory with a 3-0 scoreline. The second round of the Challenge Cup saw the team host Pilkington’s from the West Cheshire League. A disappointing result saw Alder take a 2-0 lead but a disastrous spell of conceding three goals within 10 minutes
led to an eventual 5-3 defeat and elimination from the cup. However, the team currently lie fourth in the league with one defeat from seven games so have made a promising start. Pictured above is action from the game with Pilkington’s with Alder, in the royal blue shirts, on the attack.
