PUB WITH NO BEER WIN, WIN, WIN By Stephen Guy

THE grand opening of Wavertree Playground by the Lord Mayor was being prepared when a notice board appeared on land opposite the park gates in Smithdown Road. Brewers Burton, Bell & Co proudly announced that they were EXLOGLQJ WKH +DWĂ€HOG +RWHO RQ WKH site. This prompted residents to protest in letters to the Liverpool Mercury. “I hope the Mayor and those of the licensing bench who accompany him will take special note of the board,â€? fumed one in August 1895. “I would strongly oppose the erection of a public house on this ground.â€? Another wrote: “I am sure there are quite enough public houses around this new ground without adding to their number.â€? The park was given to the city by an anonymous benefactor, leading to the open space being dubbed The Mystery. “I am inclined to think no greater insult could be offered to the generous donor than for the authorities to licence a gin palace right opposite the principal entrance to it.â€? However, the brewers went ahead before a licence was granted, building a substantial hotel with Ă€QH DUFKLWHFWXUDO IHDWXUHV LQFOXGLQJ

An interview with Sir Ken Dodd By Tim Saunders

“NEVER live in the past even if it’s cheaper,” quips Sir Ken Dodd, who celebrates his landmark 90th birthday in November. He reveals that he will continue to do two gigs every week and 100 a year. “I used to do 400.” “Always look to the future,” he recommends. “My toenails are 90 but my brain is 21. When you wake up in the morning at 90 you thank God for allowing you to live so long and for giving you such an adventurous life. I’m very grateful.” A self-confessed chatterbox the nonagenarian still introduces his audiences to six new gags per show. “If two or three get a laugh you’re doing very well,” admits Ken, who returns to the stage for the sheer thrill of the experience. “You can never predict an audience. You have to learn to read them very very quickly. There is a lot of creativity in being a comedian.” The king of the one-liners looks forward to doing shows “because I love playing an audience”. “Some PHQ JR À VKLQJ DQG some men play snooker, I’m stage struck, I just love doing shows; it’s my life.” Knighted earlier in the year by

Prince William at Buckingham Palace has added to Ken’s happiness. “It hasn’t changed me at all – I am the same Ken Dodd that I always was; I still put the same underpants on everyday… well not the same underpants. It is delightful. My family and friends all think it is wonderful. What I am very pleased about is that they have given this recognition to someone from show business; my type of show business; I am a variety entertainer. It really means a variety of skills. I’m KHUH WR Á \ WKH Á DJ µ He adds: “I’d

like to live to be 190 because there are so many things to see, so many people to meet, so many things I’d like to do and places to visit.” Another ambition is for a Ken Dodd Archive because he adores books. “I get told off; if I buy another book my À QH ODG\ WKUHDWHQV that she will have me put away! I must

have 100,000 books. I have a house and two little cottages and they’re all full of them. “I have a passion for buying books particularly anything to do with show business. Some of which I have read and some that I plan to read and some that I will never read.” As a youngster he was offered a junior

reporter’s job at the Liverpool Evening Express but a career in journalism was not as appealing as comedy. Aged 14, Ken was intrigued to discover how a joke was produced. “A joke has a surprise ending; a tag we call it. You are drawn into psychology and you

start reading all the books on it by the philosophers such as Schopenhauer and Freud. Since 1960 a poodle has accompanied Ken pretty much everywhere he goes. “Down the years I have had seven or eight of them.” www.official kendodd.co.uk

I STILL hear of people not eating carbs to lose weight – at the beginning of the year, I held a couple of seminars and went over the importance of carbohydrates and why and when we need them in our diet. Firstly, with regards to changing our body shape, we need to focus on measurements, rather than weight loss. When we suddenly drop our daily calorie intake (i.e. eliminate carbs from our diet), our metabolism slows right down. Initially, we can lose weight by doing this, but it’s not good. We start to break down muscle for energy and this is something we GHÀQLWHO\ GR QRW ZDQW DV PXVFOH LV PRUH metabolically active than fat). Remember, all the activities that we do require energy. Even walking or breathing requires energy. The main source of energy required for our daily requirements is glucose and glucose is taken from the starches and sugars that we eat. Starches and sugars get broken down to simple sugar with the help of insulin during the process of digestion. The sugar then gets stored in muscles, liver or other parts of the body. Any excess sugar will be stored as fat later on. Proper selection of carbs can really contribute towards weight loss. For me the best times to take in high GI

This is when your insulin receptors will be more sensitive towards building muscle glycogen (energy) rather than stored fat Taking in high GI carbs (e.g. white bread, potatoes, white rice, sugary snacks) outside these windows can contribute towards an increase in body fat %. By following this approach, you will have the required energy needed for your daily activities. ADVERTISING ANNOUNCEMENT

This month we speak to Ruth Roberts, a Clinical Negligence Solicitor, based at GAD’s Penny Lane office What types of medical negligence can be claimed for?

example, if you are a child under 18 or if the medical negligence has resulted in death.

We assist clients with a wide range of medical negligence claims, including child brain injury, delay in diagnosis/misdiagnosis, orthopaedic, infection, pressure sores, medication errors and fatal claims. We have specialist experience in the area of medical negligence and have achieved successful results for our clients against hospitals, GPs and other healthcare providers.

What is the initial process and is there anything a client can do to assist with this?

Would it make a difference if the person was treated at a private hospital or surgery? No, we can still assist you in bringing a claim against the healthcare provider. How long does the client have to make a claim? Generally you have 3 years in which to make a claim. This is generally calculated from the date of the actual medical incident. For example, if you have surgery which unfortunately goes wrong, the time limit would start from the date of your surgery. However, you may believe that your surgery has been a complete success, but later discover that something went wrong. In this case, it may be possible to calculate the time limit from the date that you became aware that something went wrong.

If you think you have a claim, the first step is for you to contact us and we will assess this in detail for you. It would be helpful if you could make a clear note of your complaint and any key dates beforehand as this will help us to give you the best advice on the prospects of your claim as well as the time limits. Once we accept your case the first step in any medical negligence claim would be for us to obtain and review your medical records. We may also advise you in the first instance to make a complaint if we feel we need more information in your case. How does GAD work to reassure clients as this can be a sensitive area?

Assessing when this time limit starts can be difficult and is often not straightforward. We would always recommend that you take legal advice on when the time limit expires.

All members of staff at GAD have extensive experience of dealing with sensitive cases involving a number of issues. We understand that you will be going through an upsetting and distressing time and will ensure that there is always someone on hand for you to talk to and deal with your claim in a timely manner. If you are thinking of making a claim, but do not feel comfortable discussing this on the telephone you can always email us initially and we will do our best to reassure you with a view to arranging a telephone appointment. All correspondence is confidential and if, after our initial consultation, you do not wish to pursue your matter further there will be no pressure on you to make a claim.

There are situations where it can differ. For

Can another member of the family make a

claim on behalf of a loved one? There are circumstances in which you can bring a claim on behalf of a loved one. On occasion, sadly, the medical negligence results in the death of a loved one. In this case a claim can be brought on their behalf by their personal representative. In addition, if a person lacks capacity, in that they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves, you may be able to pursue a claim on their behalf. Please note that the 3 year time limit does not apply in cases where a person lacks capacity. It will only start to run if the person regains capacity. Further, if you have a child under the age of 18 you can bring a claim on their behalf. Once they turn 18 they will take over conduct of their case. For further assistance, you can contact Ruth at rroberts@gadllp.co.uk or call her on 0151 733 3353.

It is time for the real action to start again By Chris Thomas PRIOR to the competitive games starting all teams at Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club have been involved in a variety of pre-season friendlies and tournaments. 7KH PHQ·V À UVW WHDP added an exotic twist to their pre-season program with a productive trip to Ireland. This was followed by a win versus a Bowdon team. 7KH ODGLHV À UVW WHDP JR LQWR the season in high spirits with four wins in four games after only conceding one goal. The men’s second team and women’s third team were both involved in pre-season tournaments.

The men’s picked up a couple of wins at a tournament hosted by West Derby and the ladies team came second in a tournament hosted by the Lancashire Hockey Association. They had been invited to the tournament after the cup win the previous season and second place was a good result considering they were playing against higher ranked teams. There was also some internal club rivalry with the men’s third and fourth team SOD\LQJ D À HUFHO\ FRQWHVWHG friendly. The men’s fourth team came out on top 5-4 in a highly entertaining game, with the mixture of youth

and experience taking the spoils this time. No doubt the third team will be looking for a different result the next time the teams meet. A noticeable part of the pre-season programme was the inclusion of friendlies IRU WKH ODGLHV IRXUWK DQG À IWK teams – something that has not happened before. And, just like that, preseason is over and everyone is now looking for the competitive action to start again. Hockey players always know when the season is going to start again – the nights close in and it always rains on the night they are due to train…!!

As a precursor to the season, what has now become an annual event saw the Jamie Leigh Foundation Charity Event take place on August Bank Holiday Sunday. Blessed by great weather, the day had a BBQ, raffle stars, a disco and of course the charity football game. Following on from last year’s win for Barnsey’s team, Norman and Stav were seeking revenge and in what can only be described as an open disregard for the veteran opposition, they fielded a youthful side who were victorious. Norman has now claimed the bragging rights and taken ownership of the winning cup. The day raised money for the Foundation and Paul and Angie would like to thank everyone who contributed to a successful fun day. Pictured are the two teams before the game.

Fabia Monte Carlo is a racy little number By Tim Saunders THE city of Monte Carlo has had a long association with motorsport, ever since the Monaco Grand Prix was founded in 1929 using the city streets as part of the circuit. A circuit that has seen VRPH RI %ULWDLQ·V À QHVW racing drivers clinching victory such as Graham Hill and more recently Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. Why am I talking about this famous French Formula One race? Because I happen to be behind the wheel of a Skoda Fabia… Monte Carlo. It’s a racy little number that reminds me of a plush bachelor pad, as I cast my eyes over the striped seats. 7KHUH·V GHÀ QLWHO\ D KLQW of sportiness about this À YH GRRU IDPLO\ KDWFKEDFN There’s a liberal smattering of leather on the gearstick, handbrake and steering wheel. But somehow it’s more staid than a typical hot hatch. Yes, it’ll reach 60mph from standstill in under 11 seconds and will go on to over 110mph. But such À JXUHV FDQ EH IRXQG LQ D plethora of similar vehicles. This is more of a design statement than a blisteringly fast GTi, greatly helped in my opinion by the classic PHWHRU JUH\ À QLVK DQG contrasting black radiator grille and wing mirrors. While lovers of the old vRS might be disappointed by the performance its HIÀ FLHQF\ PLJKW FRPSHQVDWH It’s a real pleasure to just sit and admire the colour which

is offset extremely well by its 16” Italia black alloy wheels. It’s generally comfortable to drive too, with a good driving position although I À QG WKHUH LV D ODFN RI OXPEDU support on the driver’s seat. I am a fan of panoramic glass roofs and I am delighted to see one in the Fabia; it really does lift the levels of light in the cabin. It is good to see a traditional handbrake instead of an electric switch, which so many manufacturers seem to prefer these days. $QG D À YH VSHHG PDQXDO gearbox. I do question whether six speeds are actually necessary. Skoda clearly doesn’t think so. The Monte Carlo is a responsive little mover, the gearbox is decisive and the brakes are decent. I am surprised that on a vehicle of this price (test model £16,695) that the wing mirrors are not power folding and that there are not electric rear windows but luxuries do include heated front seats and touchscreen navigation. After hard driving there is

a distinctive ‘click clicking’ sound from the car as it cools down, which I haven’t heard so clearly from a car before. Valves or brakepads I suspect. The quiet raspy note to the exhaust is certainly attractive. It generally goes by unnoticed from the outside world and does not prevent an erratic driver of a white Mercedes Benz van from undercutting me on the motorway. During my research I note that Chevrolet named its coupe Monte Carlo between 1970 and 1988 and from 1995 to 2007. It was clearly successful for Chevy and Skoda should do well to replicate this with its own smaller more perfectly formed version.
