Living off the land By Stephen Guy THE agricultural revolution helped transform farming to put more on people’s tables to feed a growing population. Farming methods had changed little for hundreds of years after early settlers tamed the natural landscape. Much of north west England was either swampland or forest when early nomadic people wandered around territories occupied by very few people. They abandoned their wandering ways as farming developed and they were joined by incomers from northern Europe. It took many generations to gradually drain XLI PERH XS QEOI IZIV MRGVIEWMRK EVIEW ½X JSV agriculture. Large tracts of natural forest were also felled. In medieval times crops were grown using strip farming methods. Land was let out in strips rather like allotments – Laxton in Nottinghamshire is the last place in England where this system is still used. Two important factors spurred the agricultural revolution from Tudor times – crop rotation and land enclosure. Crop rotation involves growing different

X]TIW SJ TPERXW SR WTIGM½G EVIEW SJ PERH 8LMW can improve soil structure and fertility because different crops use contrasting nutrients, for example. The enclosure movement was controversial and caused great hardship in places because local people were denied the use of common land available to all. Landowners argued that they needed PEVKI IRGPSWIH ½IPHW XS FSSWX EKVMGYPXYVEP productivity impossible under the strip system. Jericho Farm (pictured in 1907) on Jericho Lane at Otterspool survived until the early 1960s, although it had long since ceased to be a working farm.

Bespoke Support at Home Service Most of us would prefer to remain in our own homes during later life. After all, home is where the heart is. But what if, due to illness, injury or just getting older, we needed extra help with household cleaning, getting the groceries in, or even help with personal care? What then?

The farm was probably built in the early 17th century when puritans settled in the area. Jeremiah Horrocks – the pioneering astronomer who discovered the transit of Venus – was a member of this farming community. He was born about 1618 in Lower Lodge Farm on the site of the former Otterspool Station. In the 19th century Liverpool people travelled out to a popular strawberry garden near Jericho Farm. This was a favourite summer evening destination where those enjoying strawberry teas could also dance to music provided by E ½HHPIV EGGSQTERMIH F] SXLIVW TPE]MRK XLI spoons. There are many former farm buildings surviving long after land development made them redundant. Stanlawe Grange in Aigburth Hall Avenue, arguably Liverpool’s oldest inhabited house, probably served as a barn for Cistercian monks on the opposite bank of the Mersey in Cheshire. Graduation day MARTIN was a confident student, excelling not only in his studies but also several forms of competitive sports. He met Anita when they both joined Ticktock College studying for degrees in time management. The couple immediately discovered they had much in common – in particular highly-developed senses of humour. Martin had only to pull a face and Anita, the daughter of a prosperous undertaker, was in fits of laughter. Both could walk into a room full of strangers and humorously make others feel at ease. Like Anita, Martin’s background was hardly conductive to hilarity: his parents were both coroners. In their second year Anita discovered Martin’s secret. They were sat by willow trees alongside the lake, idly looking at a heron wading in the shallows. “It’s Samantha and Ben’s party next month – it’s themed on passing time,â€? said Anita. “They want us all to come in fancy dress – what do you say?â€? “Fine,â€? said Martin. “As long as you don’t ask me to make the costumes.â€? Anita was soon busy and produced two outfits representing a grandmother clock and a grandfather clock. Hers was a long shimmering gown in silver while his was like a golden toga.

Anita produced the garments with a flourish – they fitted perfectly. Then she produced the hats – box-like creations with realistic clock faces complete with eye holes. Anita was shocked by Martin’s reaction when he saw the hat. He flung it aside as she tried to put it on him, turning into a shivering, snarling beast. “What is it darling? asked Anita reassuringly stroking his shoulder. “I knew you would have to find out sooner or later – I’m hat-phobic, said Martin in a hushed voice. “It started on my first day at St Bertha’s prep school. I had to wear a ridiculous cap

Strange Tale – by Anton Valdemart that was too big for me. “Mother said there had to be space for my head to grow but when I got to school it was a nightmare. The other boys called me Titchy Bonce because of the huge cap.â€? The school’s head allowed Martin to go capless. “Things have since been fine,â€? confided Martin, “but I have been living in dread of a coming event ‌â€? “Please tell me – I’m here to help,â€? said Anita, comfortingly. “The thing I am dreading most is graduation day,â€? murmured Martin. “I will have to go on stage in front of all those people in a gown and ‌â€? - he almost choked saying the word - “hat.â€? Anita’s eyes misted over sympathetically. Gradually she helped him overcome his phobia, making series of therapeutic hats with care. The first was the size of a thimble attached to a silk thread. Gradually each got bigger until Martin could wear his graduation outfit without turning into a quivering wreck. The graduation ceremony passed without a hitch but sadly Martin suffered a side effect. He spent the next few years unable to go anywhere without a hat. When Ticking a Box Without Professional Advice Can Have Unforeseen and Costly Consequences The growing awareness of dementia has seen an increasing understanding by the general public of the need for a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allowing you to appoint one or more attorneys to make important decisions on your behalf if and when capacity is lost. There are two types of LPA - a Financial LPA – giving the attorney power to deal with your property and financial affairs and a Health LPA – giving the attorney powers in respect of your current and future welfare and medical treatment. The forms are standardised and cannot be deviated from. It is also designed with ‘tick’ boxes. However, despite their apparent ‘simplicity’ a number of drafting errors can result in unlawful additions you have made being struck out by the Court upon registration of the LPA or even worse, the LPA being completely rejected by the Court. Part 3 of the LPA form is creating constant problems – this allows you to choose from 3 options in the event that you have appointed 2 or more attorneys. The attorneys must act either Jointly or they can act independently of each other (Jointly and Severally) or a mix of the two with them acting Jointly for some decisions and Jointly and Severally for other decisions. Practical day to day problems can arise with a Joint appointment. If an attorney is away on holiday, the remaining attorney cannot act. If an attorney dies, the remaining attorney(s) cannot continue to act – i.e the Power ends

unless replacement attorneys have been appointed. Likewise, choosing jointly for some matters and jointly and severally for others has both the aforementioned problems, but also the added difficulty of deciding which decisions fall within which of the options. Moreover, the Court is receiving a growing quantity of powers that attempt to allow one attorney to act in all matters independently with the remaining attorneys acting Jointly at all times. The Court is adamant that only 1 of the 3 specific options listed above under the ‘tick box’ regime can be chosen from Part 3 and any attempt to deviate from these or any modification to them will be rejected outright. In the vast majority of cases, GAD Solicitors would recommend “Jointly and Severally” as the appropriate choice for a donor (the second of the three options discussed above). That said, if you have very strict views upon how the attorneys can act, possible solutions can be considered using multiple LPA’s, third party consents from an advocate who is not an attorney or carefully drafted ‘preferences’ that will not be deemed ineffective – such departures from the norm should only ever be considered with appropriate legal advice, as a rejection of the LPA by the Public Guardian will cost you in lost fees and repeat applications, crucial time in attempting to rectify the situation either by starting over again or lodging a legal challenge to the decision made by the court and a real danger that a deterioration in the health of the donor may prevent the parties concerned rectifying the errors. As ever, an apparent saving of legal fees by not having instructed a law firm experienced in these matters will have turned out to have been a false economy.

Celebrations for Chinese New Year are going to be ‘Pig’ A THREE-day celebration welcoming Chinese New Year will take place to mark the 20th anniversary of Liverpool’s twinning with Shanghai. The city’s Year of the Pig festivities will start on Friday 8 February with a focus on the Chinese arch, which was gifted to the city by Shanghai twenty years ago as a symbol of the twinning relationship. From 7pm on the 8 and 9 February, there will be lion HERGMRK ERH 'LMRIWI MR¾YIRGIH street theatre in and around the arch, which will build up to a unique projection and pyrotechnic show at the arch, and on surrounding buildings. Called The Quest for the Arch, the projections follow the journey of a little girl and a pig from Shanghai to Liverpool. The soundtrack will be provided by musician and composer Jah Wobble and will feature a live element to the performance. It will end at around 7.45pm. The Chinese arch street entertainment, the lumiere and

pyrotechnic show will also take place on Sunday 10 February from 6pm. Building up to Sunday’s main day of celebrations, from 28 January, thousands of Chinese lanterns will adorn city centre streets and Chinatown, and a number of buildings including St Luke’s Church (the Bombed Out Church), Everyman & Playhouse Theatres and Sefton Park Palm House will turn red in homage to China. Sunday (10 February) will see the usual traditional celebrations take place, which last year attracted around 25,000 people. They include a number of street and stage performances, family workshops, a fairground, parades, ½VIGVEGOIV HMWTPE]W ERH SJ GSYVWI the popular Chinese market on George Street selling gifts, souvenirs and mouth-watering Chinese food. The family friendly activities will start from 11.30am and take place in and around Great George Square and Nelson Street. The event will end at 6.45pm. Deputy Mayor and cabinet

member for culture, tourism and events, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “The Chinese New Year celebrations are a wonderful way to kick start the annual events calendar. “This is a particularly special year as it marks the 20th anniversary of our twinning with Shanghai. This global friendship was built on historic trade links, and today we maintain a partnership with China which furthers investment and development for both parties. “The projections will, literally, shine a light on the arch - a symbol of our friendship. We have seen in previous years how popular the lumiere is – and this year’s beautiful work will be no exception. It will undoubtedly be a wonderful few days and an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate our muchloved Chinese community.” The event is organised by Liverpool City Council and is supported by Liverpool Chinese Business Association, the Liverpool BID Company, Liverpool ONE and Royal Liver Building 360.

Digital experts Illuminos have created the lumiere ‘The Quest for the Arch’ in partnership with Pagoda Arts, First Take and Jah Wobble. The full list of buildings lighting up red are: St Luke’s Church (Bombed Out Church), Central Library and World Museum, Town hall, Cunard Building and St George’s Hall, Everyman & Playhouse Theatres, Liverpool 3RI 1SSV½IPHW ERH .EQIW 7X Stations, Martin Luther King Building, Royal Liverpool Albert Dock, Open Eye Gallery, Port of Liverpool Building, Sefton Park Palm House, The Arch, Toxteth Library, Unity Theatre and key Wirral buildings such as the tower at Wallasey Town Hall, the panoramic lounge at the Floral Pavilion and the Queen Victoria monument in Hamilton Square. It makes me very angry.” In 1998 the global media personality, journalist, columnist, reviewer and prodigious author founded her own publishing company, Stump Cross Books. “Professor Greer is a phenomenon of our time, whose reputation in connection with ongoing sociological issues of women today, is world renowned in the mind of the average person,” states Anglia Ruskin University where in 2003 she was awarded Honorary Doctor of Letters. “She also epitomizes the thesis that, perhaps XLI ³KVIEXRIWW´ SJ ER] [VMXIV MW VI¾IGXIH MR the quantity of words published about them, rather than how much they, personally, have written. www.liverpoollink.co.uk Just before Christmas very positive news was received about the public inquiry into the Right of Way issue. The inquiry, which was called after the footpath through the Glenacres & Byron Court site was blocked by a brick wall built in early 2016 has been reported in past issues of the Woolton Society newsletter. As the next issue will not be out until the end of the month we are notifying members now that the inspector’s report found in favour of Liverpool City Council. The council was supported by the Woolton & Gateacre societies, with submissions given at the inquiry that the path through the Glenacres & Byron Court site should be formally recognised as a public right of way. This has now been confirmed, with the path now Number 77 on the council’s Public Right of Way map. However the wall has yet to be demolished, & the Byron Court Management Company could appeal the decision. It has also been reported that the BCMC has approached Maria Eagle MP in order to convince her that the wall should be retained despite the decision of the inspector. Further news will be in issue 349 of the newsletter, which will also carry a full programme of events for the 2019 season. Jean Davies Chairman The Woolton Society

Creating a 90-day action plan By Paul Coshott AT the beginning of the year you might have made a list of some New Year’s resolutions or maybe you made a list of all the things you wanted to achieve this year. I used to do the same but recently I’ve been setting 90-day goal rather than looking at the next few months or year. I teach my clients to do this as well (I’ve written a short NLP book on it) but here’s the thing.... most people set 12-month targets and they go hard at it for two weeks, burn out and get frustrated when they don’t pull it off in that time. Then they take a breather and tell themselves they have another 11 months to do it....then they’ll either go again (and do the same again) then tell themselves that what they wanted wasn’t actually that important and that things ‘aren’t that bad’ the way they are. I totally 100 per cent understand though, I used to be the same. So what changed? Well, the

½VWX XLMRK ERH XLI SRP] XLMRK -´PP cover this month) – I learnt to stop setting goals that had a long, drawn out time frame attached and I started setting 90-day outcomes or 12-week outcomes. You see, 12 weeks is enough time to pull of some big stuff and it’s also ‘not enough’ time to really procrastinate and ‘put things off ’ The result? Well, my results have been pretty cool (I don’t always get what I want, but I’m happy). I’ll tell you about them in a future article. In fact, I’d go so far as to say my results (and the results of the women on my transformation programme) are better in just 90 days than what 99.9 per cent of people pull off in a year.

But understand this – none of these results would have been possible without setting 90-day targets and if you’re heading into 2019 without doing this. Well, your results will be the same if you really want to light up this year – maybe it’s time to go all in, double down on yourself to get deadly serious about 2019 being the year you get the results you desire and step into the game

Weather is no issue for the Karoq By Tim Saunders I DON’T usually pay much attention to the weather but during my test of the Skoda Karoq I cannot help but notice it. I decide to take it on a trek to Hertfordshire and before long spitting rain turns into a torrential and persistent downpour that sees many motorists stranded. But not us and I am grateful because the Karoq, being an SUV, stands taller than those smaller run of the mill cars, like the usual Fiesta I drive. And I thank my lucky stars that I’m in the Karoq as I have to make my way through what seems to be a lake covering a country lane as we head towards Shaw’s Corner, playwright George Bernard Shaw’s retreat. Although the water level’s high it doesn’t pose a problem for the Skoda. Thank goodness. And as this downpour continues for a good hour my new friend has many similar challenges thrown at him. 8LMW MW ER I\GIPPIRX ½VWX impression that this competent

vehicle keeps up for the duration of the test. It puts up with my three children and their heavy feet in the rear and there is a very positive contrast to the Hyundai i30 Fastback that I have just returned, in that I can ½X Q] GLMPHVIR´W XLVII GEV WIEXW quickly and easily in the Skoda. The seatbelt points are placed in sensible positions unlike in the Hyundai. The seats are comfortable, there’s a good amount of space and the boot is large enough to allow us to travel with our luggage as well as Henry’s pushchair. Not many cars are so

accommodating. Another pleasant surprise is the full size spare tyre, stored underneath the boot compartment. This is a real luxury these days, some manufacturers have done away entirely with providing a spare, opting instead for a little repair pack. My steed is a fast and reliable vehicle and the cruise control on the left of the steering wheel, is easy to use. However, if you are too eager it can result in the indicator being operated instead. My heart is in my mouth at one point though, because I have to negotiate a very tight entrance to a car park, so tight that I have

to retract the power folding wing mirrors but thankfully we make our way trouble free, to our space. Others have not been so fortunate I see as I survey the parked cars with their various dents and scrapes. The other great thing about the Karoq is its satellite navigation system, which is a joy to use. 8LIVI´W RS JEJ½RK EFSYX XLI driver just needs to know the postcode and can enter it without even needing a space in between characters. However, the female voice delivering the instructions unnervingly sounds like Theresa May and there is an irritating delay at the most nerve-racking of moments for instance, while tackling a roundabout where I need to know which exit to take. Cat of the month – Ninja NINJA is about nine months old. She was found on the road in Speke. She is now safe in Rescue but is looking for a special home. Ideally she’d have another cat to play with and she doesn’t mind dogs either. She is VERY active and will need to be kept occupied. Unfortunately she’s not suitable for a home with younger children. Are you the home she is looking for? If so get in touch! For adoption enquiries please also contact us. Please call our Rescue on 0151 494 0470 or 07745 167170. It has recently been taken over by two independent vets; Alex McVey and Sarah Telford and prides itself on its independent nature. Alex and Sarah are a couple who met at University whilst training. Alex grew up in South Liverpool whilst Sarah grew up in Somerset but has fallen in love with the city. The team at the practice provide gold standard healthcare for all dogs, cats, rabbits and small furries. They also feel passionately about offering the best possible care at all times, day or night. For this reason Woolton Veterinary Centre will be providing its own out-of-hours service at the practice i.e. you and your pet won’t need to travel to an unfamiliar setting when you have an emergency.

his racing background, we always advise that care is taken around smaller dogs, and other pets. Shey may need a little housetraining help, due to having spent most of his life in kennels, and he can live with children around the age of eight.
