Olive Mount 1861... By Stephen Guy

WITH extensive views over the surrounding countryside, the stone-built mansion set in a 48-acre estate was advertised as a suitable residence for a family of rank. The Liverpool Mercury announced in August 1861 that Olive Mount house and adjacent properties were available at an annual rent of £778 a year. Built in the 1790s, the mansion (pictured) had already been home to several families. It was constructed by prosperous grocer and tea dealer James Swan. His business was based in Castle Street and he lived nearby in Redcross Street before moving to Wavertree. After James died in 1829 it was acquired by a man of independent means, Luke Crossley, who was married with six daughters aged five to 14.An East India merchant called Adam Gladstone – not believed to be related to the Liverpool-born prime minister

– was the tenant when the property was advertised in 1861. The Mercury reported: “The mansion has a south aspect and contains vestibule, large entrance hall with dome light of stained glass, spacious dining rooms, breakfast room and library, housekeeper’s room, servants’ hall and all the requisite domestic offices on the ground floor.” The first floor had nine large bedrooms served by modern plumbing – two water closets

and two hot and cold showers and baths. There were seven attic bedrooms and extensive cellars cut into rock foundations. The grounds featured the entrance lodge and a staff house, stables, coach houses, piggeries, barns and cart sheds. There was a large vinery and forcing house, well-stocked gardens, lawns and pleasure grounds including shrubberies and walks. “This estate abounds with

excellent building stone and much of the land may be disposed of as building ground without impeding the beautiful and extensive prospect from the mansion.” The estate included private pews at nearby Holy Trinity Church. Two later occupants were cotton broker Francis Hollins and merchant Thomas Hornby, nephew of Hugh Hornby of Sandown Hall. The estate was developed in 1898 as cottage homes for poor children. It later became the Olive Mount Children’s Hospital. Following the demolition of the cottage homes 25 years ago, the site was occupied by a school and nursing home. Until recently the Grade-II listed mansion house building was occupied by Mersey Care NHS Trust. It now awaits possible refurbishment as apartments. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free.

Watch out for the Mossley Hill Scout and Guide Christmas float THE Scouts and Guides have, over the years, collected over £110,000 for charities including the Marie Curie Centre and Alder Hey Children’s Kidney Fund.

This year they will be collecting in the Mossley Hill, Grassendale, Allerton and Aigburth areas on December 20, 21, 22 and 23 and look forward to your support again.

Dear Editor Having seen the poppies displayed at the Tower of London on TV, I was delighted to see the display of remembrance poppies in the grounds of Mossley Hill Parish Church, Rose Lane. The poppies are one foot tall in height and were made by pupils of Liverpool College Queens Drive. The poppies are made from two-litre plastic bottles and sprayed red, with a strong stalk made from branches. What a wonderful tribute by today’s pupils to remember former pupils killed in 1914-118 conflict. Yours faithfully D Bush – LINK reader

Granny Christmas HAZELNUT Hall was ancient with a heart and soul, its uneven stone walls and huge timbers resembling the innards of a sleeping giant. The house creaked at night like the bones of an old man trying to sleep. The place conjured up images of bygone times, lost loves and distant dreams. Like many old homes in the middle of winter, some areas were impossible to heat properly. The Mathers installed central heating when they bought the 16th century mansion but this had little impact on the cold that seemed to penetrate everywhere. It was their first Christmas at the hall and they made every effort to make things comfortable. The children, Ben and Poppy, were excited at the prospect of hanging stockings on the huge chimneypiece nestling in a snug inglenook. When James Mather bought the property he agreed that Jack Seer, the gardener and handy-man, could stay on at the lodge which guarded the long drive to the country house. Jack had spent all his life in the pretty cottage and the new occupants liked him immediately. He was a traditional countryman, wearing moleskin trousers and sporting primaeval boots. Jack was working on a drain one afternoon, showing the children the intricacies of a large Victorian grid. They stared into the gloomy pipe while Jack prodded about with a long stick. There was a gurgle and the water started flowing again.

Christmas has sent his granny instead while he waits on the roof.” Mr and Mrs Mather smiled indulgently when the children told the story.. Stockings were hung and sherry, mince pie and a carrot left out for the visitors. Poppy crept down in the early hours. Hidden behind a bookcase, Poppy shivered when an old lady

Next it was the fireplace where a pile of logs waited ignition. Jack stuck his head up the chimney and prodded about with his staff. There was a flurry of debris and a big abandoned bird’s nest crashed down. “A good job you found it otherwise Father Christmas mightn’t have been able to call,“ said Ben. “It would have messed up his coat and boots,” added Poppy. Jack smiled and there was a long pause before he said slowly: “I don’t want to upset you children but we don’t have Father Christmas here – well not in the house.” Ben and Poppy looked downcast. Visions of no presents and empty stockings were flashing through their minds. “No – we have Granny Christmas instead,” said Jack. “About 70 years ago Santa got a bit of a shock. It was just after the war when I was little. “We don’t exactly know what happened but ever since Father

emerged from the chimney. She wore a mop cap and shawl decorated with holly and ivy. Granny Christmas took one sip of sherry, grimaced and spluttered “I’d prefer something stronger” before leaving the presents, filling the stockings and climbing back up the chimney. n Read my next Strange Tale – The Snow People – in the January Link.

Lessons from the Gorge with Paul Coshott

A FEW weeks ago, some of my clients and I went on a gorge walk (part of this year’s residential training weekend). When I was planning on putting this into the weekend, I’d checked it out a few times and thought it wouldn’t be too challenging. However...... As we started it, what I thought we were going to do, and what we were about to do, were two completely different things. Basically, we were kind of doing a rock climb, over and around boulders, while going through waterfalls and, as we started it, one of the women described herself as being ‘terrified’. And as we made our ascent up the gorge, it became even more challenging; just before the end of it, we had two vertical climbs to get to the top. Even I almost ‘had a moment’ – it was scary! There was such relief once we got to the top. We were actually almost 300 feet higher from where we started. But here’s the thing……if we

MOTORS

www.liverpoollink.co.uk

Striking Volvo with ample room By Tim Saunders “IT’S the best seven-seater I know” says my dentist, during my routine examination, as we discuss the merits of the Volvo XC90. He owns both an XC90 and a VW Touareg. “And there’s still room for the shopping when all the seats are up”. So I’m expecting great things when I test the XC90. Externally this latest model is more rounded than its predecessor making it more visually striking and attractive. Head on its headlights and large bold chrome grille are what you’d expect of a premium sports utility vehicle that’s got to compete against rivals from BMW, Porsche and Jaguar Land Rover. The rear is a little less appealing to me. The power boot is a bit boxy and could do with more curves. And while the chrome exhaust pipes help to set off the rear their placement is not safe for little children as Henry (2) proves when his hand brushes against one of them after a long journey.

They are very hot. Fortunately, I rush him to the sink and after lots of cold water there is thankfully no burn. A trip to London to see my wife’s uncle Harry allows us to travel with her parents, which is a rare luxury. Lin and John sit next to Henry in his child seat while Harriett (7) and Heidi (5) sit in the third row of seats in the boot. Usually the third row is awkward to the say the least, when it comes to lifting the seats up and putting them in place. But in the Volvo it is simply a matter of pulling them up and they slot into position. On

opening the power boot the rear of the Volvo drops, which is quite a surprise; this self-levelling suspension is like Citroens of old. I’m not quite sure how beneficial it is but perhaps it is aimed at the older driver and passenger, perhaps making getting into the vehicle easier. The seats are comfy too, although Harriett does complain about feeling car sick. It is strange how some new vehicles smell so strongly while others do not. We open the windows and that pacifies her. “I find this very comfortable,” says Lin. The Volvo cruises on the motorway with no road noise in

the luxury cabin. The light brown leather seats are comfortable but I do find that they make me sweat on a hot day. They are supportive and electrically adjustable. The sat nav could be easier to operate. I cannot find a postcode search, only one for a city centre or for specific things like accommodation so this is of no help for us in London. Despite motorway cruising the Volvo returns over 30mpg. Another jaunt sees us travel to Wiltshire where we are able to use the sat nav to find a supermarket and to find Warminster town centre. It works well. The large panoramic glass tilt/slide roof lets lots of light in and this has to be opened on a sunny day. n Facts at a glance XC90 D5 PowerPulse AWD Momentum Pro (MY18.5) Automatic Price: £64,974.58 Top speed: 137mph 0-60mph: 7.8secs Economy: 30mpg Watch the videos at www. testdrives.biz

New personal injury laws- unfair? I will shortly celebrate my twentieth work anniversary at Gregory Abrams Davidson, where I began my career in law. During that time, whilst there have been significant changes in the field of personal injury, in which I specialise, none have been as seismic or as detrimental to the victims of accidents as the successful passage of the Civil Liability Bill through its third stage in the House of Commons on the 23rd October 2018. In fact more people will know the winners of Love Island than have heard of the legislation that seeks to erode their legal rights to seek fair recompense for injury and losses sustained due to the negligence of others, with research showing that only 18% of the public are aware of its existence The bill introduces a fixed tariff for whiplash damages and will be complemented by a rise in the small claims limit to £5000 for road traffic accident claims. The small claims limit change means legal costs cannot be recovered when the damages are under the limit, which as Ellie Reeves MP pointed out would lead to 350,000 injured people being without the free legal cover they currently are able to access. This will create an imbalance between unrepresented claimants and the insurance companies and their legal departments.

The creation of tariffs, which sets significantly reduced damages for injuries with effects lasting up to two years, would replace the current system where judges decide compensation levels with reference to Judicial College guidelines. As such politicians would stipulate what an injury is worth rather than the independent judiciary. Currently those suffering soft tissue injuries that last around 3 months can expect to receive approximately £15002000. However, the proposed tariff provides a figure of only £225 for such an injury which The Law Society pointed out is the equivalent to some pay-outs for flight delays. This creates a system in which someone in a road traffic accident will no longer have access to free solicitor’s advice and will receive significantly less compensation than those sustaining similar injuries but in an accident at work or in a public place. That cannot be right or just.

Brett Dixon, president of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) pointed out that at no point during this Parliament or the last has the Government made any mention of reducing the number of claims by reducing the number of needless injuries. It would appear that insurance companies’ margins are more important to the government than victims of road traffic accidents receiving fair and reasonable recompense. The bill which is anticipated to come into force in April 2020 now proceeds to consideration of amendments and Royal Assent but it is not too late to make a change. To do so speak to me, write to your MP or contact APIL.

Questions are being raised about why those injured in vehicles are being treated differently to other injured people and why the government met with insurers before implementation but not representatives of the injured victims. It was the Government’s determination to cut the price of motor insurance premiums which has spawned the Bill, however whilst the cost to insurers of motor-related personal injury claims has plummeted by 20% in five years, vehicle damage costs have soared by the same amount and tax on premiums has doubled.

The year that’s been and the great unknown of 2019 ... By Trevor O’Loughlin

AS we enter the run up to the festive season it is an appropriate time to recap what has been a rather quick year and look at the financial challenges still ahead as we enter 2019. The year that’s been Carillion went into liquidation with debts of £1.5billion and the ‘Beast from the East’ trapped many of us in our homes, bringing the country to a standstill. Paper £10 notes ceased to be legal tender whilst Stephen Hawking, physicist, died aged 76 and the NHS creaked under the worst flu epidemic for a generation. Fast forward to the hottest London Marathon on record recorded at 24.1degrees and the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was watched globally by 1.9 billion. We experienced a very hot and prolonged summer heatwave during which the England football team teased the nation with a trip to

the World Cup semi-finals and we marked 100 years since the end of the First World War. UK Interest rates are 0.75 per cent, Brexit negotiations rumble and bumble along to the backdrop of 700,000 people marching in the capital demanding a vote on the final Brexit deal. The above is just a brief summary of those events that have shaped 2018 for the UK and I would need a much bigger editorial to expand to global happenings! The financial challenges The endless political and economic upheaval has meant UK Interest rates have remained near record lows in a bid to help keep the economy on the road and counteract investor worry but this has meant a continued kick in the teeth for UK savers. Deposit accounts such as Cash ISA’s and Instant access savers continue to pay awful interest – almost nothing in most cases and at the same time we have seen the

cost of living, Inflation, slowly creep up again to three per cent. Low interest rates have however helped the UK housing market remain stable for now and keep it ticking over. The rate of house building remains to be another question. The big question… 2019 Looking ahead to 2019, we will continue to see high levels of uncertainty, especially in the UK and Europe which leads to sharp, short periods of stock market volatility. Stock markets correct themselves periodically and that’s a separate issue to these spikes in volatility. Recent ‘corrections’ to the Stock market have been overdue and I would like to see 2019 be a year

firstly of consolidation before and after Brexit in March, with strong growth in the second half of the year. With so much uncertainty around the final outcome of Brexit negotiations and continued volatility in global stock markets and currencies it has never been more important to review your existing financial position. Retirement Planning, Existing Investments/Share Portfolios reviews and Inheritance Tax Planning via use of Trusts and gifting are essential parts of the financial planning process. Cognitive behaviour psychologist, Dr Doreen Davy releases an eye-opening semi-autobiographical novel. Liverpudlian author and psychologist Doreen Davy’s latest book is titled Between the Immensities. This bizarre story was inspired by true events when the author returned to her hometown of Liverpool to care for her elderly mother. Being a trained psychologist specialising in cognitive behaviour therapy, Doreen prided herself on being rational and objective, always able to find the scientific explanation for anything deemed ‘supernatural’. However, shortly after her mother’s death while still in Liverpool, strange incidents occurred that could not be rationally explained in any way. This resulted in Doreen’s scepticism being strongly challenged, leading to a significant shift in her views of life and death. The title Between the Immensities is derived from an old Celtic expression. Many years ago when people asked each other “how are you doing?”, some would reply that they were “still struggling between the immensities”. The immensities are birth and death and the bit in between is every day of our life. Doreen explains that “for many, especially for people like my mum who lived through the hungry years of the Great Depression only to be followed by the terrors of World War 2 and the Liverpool Blitzes, life was a daily struggle just to survive”. Doreen’s mother was the last remaining survivor of the Bootle Co-op air-raid shelter which received a direct hit during May 1941, killing many of the people sheltering inside. As well as being thought provoking and emotionally uplifting, the book provides plenty of humour and inspiration for the reader. Between the Immensities can be purchased online from The Book Guild or Amazon, and is available from all good bookshops. It’s a story not easily forgotten.

Having spent thirty-six years living in New Zealand, psychologist Dr Katherine Moore finally succumbs to pressure from her sisters to return to Liverpool to care for their elderly mother. Moving into her mother’s council flat in Bootle, Katherine is surprised at how negative her ‘lovely gentle mammy’ has become. Her initial unsuccessful attempts to deal with her mother’s curmudgeonly attitude provide great entertainment for the family. Yearning to connect with her mother in a more meaningful way, Katherine turns to the tools of her trade as a psychologist and gradually the delicate balance of family life is turned upsidedown for everyone in the most unexpected ways. Sprinkled throughout with Liverpudlian humour, between the Immensities is an entertaining and heart-warming story of how a shallow mother/ daughter relationship blossoms into a loving and extraordinary alliance. Dr. Doreen Davy was born and raised in Bootle, Liverpool and now lives in New Zealand where she works as a psychologist specialising in cognitive behaviour therapy “A thoroughly enjoyable read... it is warm, tender, poignant, funny and informative. I really like the Liverpudlian humour.” -Joan Rosier-Jones, author and creative writing tutor

CELEBRITY ARTICLE

Celebrity article – Bruce Dickinson By Tim Saunders

PAUL Bruce Dickinson who is lead singer of heavy metal band Iron Maiden, has sold over 90m albums and performed over 2,000 shows. An entrepreneur, commercial pilot, media personality, fencing champion and a cancer survivor. “Moving was to become a feature of my life forever but as a family our stock in trade was moving house, mainly to make money” he recalls in his autobiography What Does This Button Do? Bruce shared the basement of the Lindrick Hotel in Sheffield with his sister Helena and his father sold used cars at the front. “There was a window the size of an iPad, which opened into a gutter full of dead leaves. There was a refrigerator with an enjoyable electrical fault. I would hang on it with a damp cloth and see how much electricity I could take before my teeth started rattling. We sold up the hotel as he acquired the dealership for Lancia motor cars”. The family then moved back into an unassuming terraced house only a hundred yards up from the hotel they had sold 12 months earlier. Bruce became a pupil at Birkdale Preparatory School in Clarke Drive where comedian Michael Palin had attended a decade earlier. Taking his Common Entrance at 13, Bruce was offered a place at Oundle in

Peterborough. “Having left Sheffield, I began a process of disengagement from family and involuntary alienation from the human race, at least for a couple of years. It is hard to say, even in hindsight, whether there was a net gain or loss as a human being. During summer holidays I’d moped around town, hanging around record shops and pressing my nose up against the glass of guitar and amplifier shops, lusting after speaker cabinets and hardware. in Sheffield I still had some friends from prep school. Seeing as we’d all been packed off to boarding school, holidays were the only time we ever met up. Paul Bray was one of them. Paul had a drum kit in his garage. He was in a band”. Expelled from Oundle sixth form, months away from taking English, History and Economics A-levels, he was offered a place at King Edward VII, the comprehensive in Sheffield. “It was friendly. I waited for the hierarchy to become clear, for the punishment beatings, but nothing of that sort went on. I wondered about what might have been, had I not been packed off to boarding school”. In his spare time he joined the Territorial Army as a private. “Our unit – D Company, Yorkshire Volunteers – was, in theory, on 24-hour call in the event of a war. Our life expectancy in combat, I was informed, was one minute and 45 seconds”. Bruce passed his A-levels resulting in a place at university in London from where he started singing full-time with Samson, who played some gigs on the same bill as Iron Maiden. He joined Iron Maiden as lead singer in 1999 and famously took them on tour in a 757 he piloted. Bruce Dickinson is worth over £87m according to TheRichest.com. n Bruce Dickinson, What Does This Button Do? HarperCollins £20

Fight the flu this winter FLU is an unpredictable virus that can cause mild illness in most people. It can cause severe illness and even death among vulnerable groups including older people, pregnant women and people with an underlying health condition. Certain people are more likely to develop potentially serious complications of flu, such as bronchitis and pneumonia. These people are advised to have a flu vaccine each year. For otherwise healthy people flu can be very unpleasant, however most people will recover from flu within a week or two and shouldn’t need to see their GP. Flu symptoms come on very quickly and can include: n A sudden fever – a temperature of 38C or above. n Aching body. n Feeling tired or exhausted. n Dry, chesty cough. n Sore throat. n Headache. n Difficulty sleeping. n Loss of appetite. n Diarrhoea or tummy pain. n Nausea and being sick. The symptoms are similar for children, but they can also get pain in their ear and appear less active. To help you get better more quickly: n Rest and sleep. n Keep warm. n Take paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower your temperature and treat aches and pains. n Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. A pharmacist can give treatment advice and recommend flu remedies. Be careful not to use flu remedies if you’re taking paracetamol and ibuprofen tablets as it’s easy to take more than the recommended dose. Speak to a pharmacist before giving medicines to children. How to avoid spreading the flu Flu is very infectious and easily spread to other people. You’re more likely to give it to others in the first five days. Flu is spread by germs from coughs and sneezes, which can

live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours. How to prevent flu The flu vaccine reduces the risk of catching flu, as well as spreading it to others. It’s more effective to get the vaccine before the start of the flu season (December to March). People who should have a flu vaccine The injected flu vaccine is offered free of charge on the NHS to people who are at risk. This is to help protect them against catching flu and developing serious complications. You should have the flu vaccine if you: n Are 65 years of age or over. n Are pregnant. n Have certain medical conditions. n Are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay care facility. n Receive a carer’s allowance, or you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill. Frontline health and social care workers are also eligible to receive the flu vaccine. It is your employer’s responsibility to arrange and pay for this vaccine. CREDIT: NHS

Merry Christmas to all our readers and advertisers

Dog of the month – Roxy ROXY is an eight-year-old Crossbreed, She is an absolute heartbreaker and everyone who meets her falls instantly in love! She’s such a gentle girl who can be aloof when she first meets you, but the second time she’ll be all over you. She loves it when there are puppies at the centre, and she likes to sit and watch them play, fascinated! Roxy is wonderful with people

that she knows, but she would be happiest in a home without children, and with few visitors. She’s perfectly house trained, a really easy going girl and is going to make someone a wonderful companion. She’ll walk alongside most other dogs. n Dogs Trust Merseyside – Call on 0300 303 0292 8am-8pm Mon-Fri (closed Wed) and 9am5pm Sat and Sun www.dogstrust. org.uk

Be aware of Christmas dangers WE love Christmas but there are a lot of dangers for our pets at this time of year. Hidden dangers lie in foods like chocolate, raisins & sultanas. Also, a number of plants are harmful like holly and mistletoe. To help you look after your fur

Cat of the month – Snowy SNOWY is a beautiful seven-yearyoung cat whose owner could sadly no longer keep her due to ill health. She is incredibly friendly and loving, she just wants a home of her own. She is better suited to being a house cat as she isn’t used to being outside and so doesn’t have any awareness of traffic. If you could offer Snowy the

home she deserves please do get in touch! Please call our Rescue on 0151 494 0470 or 07745 167170. With many, many thanks to The Link for their continued support of our charity in helping us to find homes for stray and abandoned animals in Merseyside. We couldn’t manage without you. South make progress Fourth draw for W1s in the Challenge Cup By Jen Ratcliffe

By Jim Stanway

DESPITE having to virtually completely rebuild their squad, South Liverpool FC have made it to the quarter finals of the Liverpool Challenge Cup and have won the Bill Weight Cup for the first ever time – not bad for a team in transition! A battling 3-2 win at previously unbeaten Parklands, league leaders of the Warrington League Premier division, saw the team progress in the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup, the senior amateur cup competition. First half goals from Cameron Dalton, Sharif Yusuf and Danny Ventre saw the tem build up a 3-1 lead at half time. A red card for Jordan McGowan and a goal for Parklands saw South under the cosh but even the dismissal of keeper Zak Kechil in the first minute of 11 minutes of injury time could not prevent South’s progress. With a new squad, results have been inconsistent but a 2-1 win over local rivals Hale, with goals from Sharif Yusuf and Paul Lundon, saw the team climb into the top half of the table. The reserve team, playing in the West Cheshire League Second Division, have been in impressive form and four wins in the last five league games have consolidated the team’s positon in the top three. Having gone a goal down to mid-table

Mallaby, South scored three goals in four minutes either side of half time with efforts from Gerard Forde, Curtis Cummins (scoring for the sixth successive game) and Bobby Murphy, with the introduction of David Mee at half time proving crucial. Despite a 3-1 defeat at leaders Capenhurst Villa, the team are still in contention for the title although there are teams who have games in hand. The club’s youth team are second in the Liverpool Premier League Youth Division with a solid 2-0 win over leaders Warbreck (with goals from Drew Kirwan and Paddy Quinn) and a battling 2-2 draw with unbeaten Moorside Park with goals from Jack Heard and Zac Gray. South’s newly formed veterans side (players need to be over 35) have started their campaign in the Cheshire Veterans League First Division like a house on fire with five straight wins and a 2-0 win over Premier League outfit Moore United, with goals from Neil Roach and Adriano Rigoglioso. Excellent wins followed: 3-1 against divisional rivals Rainhill Town with goals from Liam McCarthy (two) and Mark Evison; 1-0 against league rivals Congleton Vale Royal with a goal from Mark Evison and 2-0 against Heswall with goals from Hilel Al-Hanshaly and Jimmy Kelly.

ANYONE who has ever played against Whitley Bay will know that the away fixture is quite the task. Our four-hour journey up consisted of a lot of boring grown up chat and the consumption of the Greggs breakfast deal from Wetherby services. What a place! What a selection! Sausage butties and cuppas in the bag, we thought we were set and ready to go but the air pressure in the tyres of the minibus had other ideas and so we had another little pause before continuing the trek. When we arrived in Newcastle, we were sluggish and a bit lethargic. Thankfully, the trek (yes, another trek) from the changing room to the pitch acted as a warm up and so when we were actually warming up, we got our second wind. Ready and raring to go, the first half of the game was very evenly matched. We had some great link up play from our mids and forwards and a superb debut performance from our resident super-sub, Verity. We also defended pretty well

and the half ended 0-0 with a lot of promise from both teams. Unfortunately we’re forming a pattern (that I hope we break soon) and we were the first to concede a goal. It was probably midway through the second half that our scramble defence withered and they scored a scrappy goal. Nothing too clinical, so at least we can say we tried our hardest defensively. The ensuing minutes of play comprised of end to end play, with grit, guts and determination from the Sefton side and with about five minutes to the final whistle we earned a short corner. A carefully selected choice from the coach meant that we were doing our deceptive short corner from the top left to the right post for a deflection. Thankfully it paid off and it was 1-1. The end whistle was honestly heaven and the game ended 1-1, our fourth draw of the season. Elsewhere in the club, despite a difficult weekend, we still have the M1s, W2s, W3s and W5s all sitting in the top half of their league tables.
