Neolithic Calder Stones return to Liverpool Park THE Calder Stones, which are among the UK’s oldest and most significant monuments, have today returned to the North West following specialist conservation work in London. Overseen by national charity, The Reader, the Stones are now set to be installed in a purposebuilt heritage facility that will open to the public in summer. The new heritage centre is being developed as part of an extensive refurbishment project to bring the Mansion House in Calderstones Park back to life, thanks to the support of several funders. including a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of just under £1.9million. When it opens its doors later this year, The Reader Mansion House will be a place where people from all walks of life can find connection through literature, heritage, art, wellbeing activities, food and fun. The Stones’ new home will evoke the tomb they were once part of and protect them from the elements. The carefully designed space will be accessible to the public seven days a week

and give visitors of all ages an opportunity to see the Stones up close and learn about their history and conservation. At around 5,000 years old, a similar age to Stonehenge, the Calder Stones provide evidence of the earliest known permanent settlement in the area. Originally part of a megalithic tomb, their recent history has involved a number of moves. In 1845, they were arranged in a stone circle by Joseph Need Walker, the then-Calderstones estate owner, in 1954 they were moved from the Park’s entrance on Menlove Avenue to protect them from weathering and vandalism and in 1964 they were placed in the Harthill Vestibule greenhouse, which unfortunately accelerated their deterioration due to the rapid changes in temperature and humidity. Their removal last September and reinstallation was carried out by experts Orbis Conservation with the full permission and oversight of Historic England and with Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent.

Dear Editor We recently promoted our free Bowl for Health courses within the Liverpool LINK, and we were delighted with the response that we received and the amount of people that called up and visited our website looking to book a place. Advertising via the Liverpool LINK enabled us to reach out to members of the community who may be experiencing isolation, loneliness or physical health problems – people who we may not have been able to reach out to otherwise. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Liverpool LINK and we will be looking forward to working with them again in the near future. Thank you again D Woodworth Merseyside Sport

www.liverpoollink.co.uk Once again the Liverpool LINK has come up trumps for us here at the Leonard Cheshire. We are a registered charity that supports disabled adults in both residential and supported living settings plus those that we can reach within the wider community. We couldn’t deliver the standard of social support we do without the fantastic teams of kind hearted volunteers that give their time freely to help others. Reaching new potential volunteers is always a challenge, a challenge made easier by the wonderful support we get from Moira at the Link. The paper reaches so many people that our Volunteers Wanted ads in the Liverpool LINK never fail to get an amazing response, enquiries go on long after the ad is run. So once again, a big thank you to Moira and her team for their kind and very much appreciated hard work and support. Kind regards, John, Volunteering, Leonard Cheshire

Harthill ruling to OAK BARREL be appealed FURNITURE LIVERPOOL City Council is to appeal the recent High Court judgement on the Harthill scheme because of the wider ramifications it has for planning policy nationally. Following a ruling on January 18, the council pledged not to proceed with the proposals – but will appeal the decision made by Mr Justice Kerr because it has far-reaching consequences for local authorities in how they deal with land classed as green wedge. He accepted that green belt land and green wedge land differ in some respects, but quashed the planning permission for 51 properties on the site. The judge recognised his decision needed to be scrutinised and – unusually – granted leave for the Court of Appeal to examine his ruling. Liverpool City Council chief executive Tony Reeves said: “The Mayor has been absolutely clear that the Harthill scheme will not go ahead or be resurrected in any form, and I want to reassure people that, whatever the result of the appeal, that position will not change. “It is for that reason we are

not appealing the costs we were ordered to pay the group that brought the challenge, and have made a payment to them of £30,000 towards them. “The reason we are appealing is because the judgement raises much wider issues about established planning policy and the difference between green belt and green wedge. “As a growing city, we need a solid planning framework which outlines clear definitions for types of land to help us arrive at consistent decisions around development. “As it stands, Mr Justice Kerr’s judgement casts doubt on established principles, and leaves councils up and down the country open to challenge on their assessment of policies which have been in place for many years. “We are appealing to get clarity on the wider issue, so everyone involved in the planning process, whether it is developers, councils, landowners or local residents, has clarity around how planning applications for development on green wedge should be assessed.”

From heath to homes

By Stephen Guy

WAVERTREE was once a sparsely-populated area of wild heathland with sandstone outcrops, gorse, heather, marshes and woodlands. Recorded in the Doomsday Book as Wauretree, it has seen many changes over the centuries. Parts of the district were enclosed in 1768, dividing the land into fields and laying out new roads. Only a few hundred people lived in Wavertree at this time. By 1901 the population had grown to 25,300. A tinted Edwardian postcard (pictured) shows how the area around the Monk’s Well has since been transformed. The origins of the Monk’s Well or Wavertree Cross in Mill Lane are obscure. It is likely a fanciful name as there were no monks or monasteries nearby. The well appears to be very old with Latin inscriptions and the date 1414 which presumably

refers to when the stonework was originally put up. However, scholars doubt this is a true date and possibly added in Georgian or Victorian times when the area was gentrified. The cross on Monk’s Well appears to be Victorian although the rest of the stonework looks much older. The well bears a striking resemblance to the ancient Fall Well off Lime Street that supplied

Liverpool’s water for centuries. To the right is stately Valencia House with its wooden gates at the junction with Victoria Park’s North Drive. The gates to the left of the cross led to a big house appropriately called Monkswell. Valencia House, with soaring chimneys and full-length windows, was the grand family home of fruit merchant William McGeorge. He made a very comfortable living importing luscious oranges

from Valencia in Spain – hence the name. It is not known if he grew oranges in his garden but other exotic fruit was cultivated along with vegetables. There was a 40ft long greenhouse, an orchard growing both apples and pears plus a chicken run and rabbit hut. Rabbits were kept as a cheap source of meat. Blackberry and raspberry bushes provided late summer and autumn fruits for pies and jams. Green figs were grown in a sheltered corner. Valencia House was pulled down around 1927 after it had been divided into three for some years. Valencia Road was built on the site when the area was developed with houses to meet the needs of a growing population. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10am to 5pm every day, admission free.

Can I help you? THE horses thundered around the track, nostrils flared and muscles straining as they headed for the winning post urged on by jockeys and crowd alike. Mary tore up her bookmaker’s docket, sighed and looked ruefully across the course packed with excited racegoers. “I never seem to win,” she told Alice as they made their way back to the strand. “It’s only a bit of fun,” said Alice. “You have hardly lost a fortune, just sixpence.” This was the friends’ second day at the Aintree meeting. A cloud blocked out the sun - it started to drizzle. While Alice fumbled with her umbrella, Mary struggled with her cape. “Can I help you?” said the man as he smoothed the garment over Mary’s shoulders. The stranger then raised his top hat, bowed and vanished into the crowd.

The friends headed for the ladies’ refreshments room where Mary daydreamed over her cup of coffee and slice of Battenburg. She could not get a vision out of her head – a nurse carrying a flickering lamp while patrolling a dimly-lit children’s dormitory. There was 10 minutes to go before the next race and Mary scanned the race card. She put a shilling on Lamplight Child which romped home at 50 to 1. Mary was brimming with confidence the following day and used all her ingenuity and insight to back Major’s Romp in the Molyneux Handicap. It came last. “Can I help you?” the soothing voice murmured in Mary’s ear as she climbed into her carriage. A gloved hand took her arm. She looked up from her seat only to see the same top-hatted stranger again disappearing into the crowd.

Her mind suddenly flooded with images of an inferno raging through a mansion. Mary told the coachman to stop and wait while she headed for the nearest bookie. Light My Fire won the Craven Hurdles by a head. Another win. “Can I help you?” said the nowfamiliar voice. A small brown bottle was waved under Mary’s nose as smelling salts quickly revived her. She had fainted with shock. Just as Mary collected her winnings, a policeman said she must return

home immediately – one of the nannies dropped a lamp and the house burnt down. As she came around, her mysterious helper once again melted into the crowd. Fortunately, noone was hurt in the blaze. Mary helped her parents find temporary accommodation for themselves and her younger brothers and sisters. Three years passed and a new mansion rose on the site of the charred ruin. It was time to take a break. Mary was reluctant to go to Epsom after what had happened but Alice persuaded her: “After all, you did have two good wins that day.” The vision of a top-hatted man came into Mary’s mind. Something told her to choose a horse with the strange-sounding name Can I Help You? It took the lead from the start and won easily. n Read my next Strange Tale – Jemina and the Goblins– in the May Link.

Council calls for action CHILDREN’S care chiefs with Liverpool City Council have joined a national call to action to halt an impending crisis in funding for children’s services after it was revealed that the city is one of the 20 worst-hit areas in the country for budget cuts. Five of the UK’s leading children’s charities have joined forces to highlight the country’s worst ‘kids cuts hotspots’ – where local councils have faced the biggest real-terms drop in funding. The report reveals that Liverpool has faced a 41 per cent

reduction in funding for children’s services since 2010/11. Liverpool has lost £441m in funding from central government since 2010/11, which equates to £816 less for every man, woman and child in the city. Despite this, the city council has pledged to protect vital services for children, including keeping all of Liverpool’s 17 children’s centres open. The council has also announced that it will recruit 160 new members of children’s social care staff in a bid to reduce caseloads by half.

I hope you don’t either!) here’s some tips that I hope will help us all have a healthy Easter: n Eat dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate Dark chocolate is a powerful source of Antioxidants and can improve blood flow and lower

www.liverpoollink.co.uk blood pressure n Hot cross buns While I hope you’ll be staying active over the holiday, if you are having any hot cross buns, my advice would be to have them either first thing of a morning or after you have worked out. Hot cross buns can be high in carbohydrates and sugars so early morning or after a training session would be the best time to have them, or maybe before a training session n Stay active As we are inclined to eat more chocolate and other things over the holiday, it is vital that we stay active so we don’t put on any excess calories n Celebrate in small doses Most of us will also be inclined to have a couple of drinks (alcohol) over the holiday (and I’ll be having some too). If this is the case, then try and space your alcohol intake out over the next few days rather than all in one night. An excess intake of alcohol can lead to a fat and sugar binge the next day n Eat Fish Today, we should be having fish as our main protein source. I’ve not been having that much fish

Our services include: recently, as I’ve mostly been having chicken and a bit of red meat. In fact, most people will probably get their protein requirements from these foods. However, fish has a lot of benefits. It can be rich in omega fats (good fats help burn bad fats), lower in saturated fats and high in protein. Hope the tips help – have a good Easter! n For details on personal training, my Women Only transformation program and my kids martial arts classes, visit my website or ring me. Sunglasses that are truly spec-tacular for summer HEY everyone and welcome to my April issue of Life ‘n’ Style. As we can all feel the summer fast approaching, what better way to be prepared than to stock up on your sunglasses collection.

Check out @trussellas_boutique on Instagram for these Gold Cat Eye glasses for £20 and also these Silver Hexagon Chloe ones also for £20.

So I thought I would show you this Hot Pink Cable Knit Jumper and Legging Set for £28 from www.prettylittlething.com. This suit also comes in a dusky pink, neon lime, bright orange and cream. The slouchy comfy fit also makes it the perfect outfit for going to any makeup or hair appointments.

I have just ordered these Black Cat Eye Logo Arm Moschino ones from www.very. co.uk for £175 which I absolutely love. I’m all for designer sunglasses but I also think you need a couple of pairs of cheaper ones that you keep in the car or take on holiday. No matter where I go on holiday you can guarantee I will lose a pair of sunnies so I don’t take my expensive ones now. I’ve learnt my lesson that you only take ones that you don’t mind losing or breaking.

At that price you don’t feel wounded if anything happens. I love this boutique as they always keep me up to date with the latest fashion trends. No matter what I get from them I always get people stopping me and commenting so it’s defo worth checking them out. With Easter just around the corner I think it’s really hard to find a comfy outfit to wear whilst in the house but also that you can pop out and do some family visiting at the same time.

LIFE ‘n’STYLE – with JADE AINSWORTH www.jadeainsworth gossip.co.uk

I put together this little number which I thought was perfect for a little bit of shopping or if you fancy going out for a bite to eat. The top is a Pink Colour Block Cropped Knitted Jumper for £18 from www. prettylittlething.com. I love wearing pastels together and the oversized design makes it really comfy but at the same time a bit sexy with it being cropped. I teamed it with the Molly high waisted Ruffle Jeans for £30 from Instagram shop @ trussellas_boutique highwaisted. Lastly I put this little set with these Nude Block Heel Clear Court Shoe for £30 from www.prettylittlething.com. Clear is the new strappy at the moment and I really like this style. Not only are they comfortable they also go with more or less everything in your wardrobe. If you want to see a wider range of perspex heels check out www.ego.co.uk Love Jade x

Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness Month IBS is a common condition that affects the digestive system. It causes symptoms like stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. These tend to come and go over time, and can last for days, weeks or months at a time. It’s usually a lifelong problem. It can be very frustrating to live with and can have a big impact on your everyday life. There’s no cure, but diet changes and medicines can often help control the symptoms. The exact cause is unknown – it’s been linked to things like

food passing through your gut too quickly or too slowly, oversensitive nerves in your gut, stress, and a family history of IBS. The main symptoms of IBS are: n Stomach pain or cramps – usually worse after eating and better after doing a poo. n Bloating – your tummy may feel uncomfortably full and swollen. n Diarrhoea – you may have watery poo and sometimes need to poo suddenly. n Constipation – you may strain when pooing and feel like you can’t empty your bowels fully. There may be days when your

Cat of the month – Kiki KIKI is about 10 years old. She’d lived outside for years and sadly her feeder is unable to continue looking after her. She is now safe in Rescue now and is looking for a quiet home. She is friendly once she learns to trust you. Are you the home she is looking for? If so get in touch!

For adoption enquiries please also contact us. Please call our Rescue on 0151 494 0470 or 07745 167170. With many, many thanks to The Link for their continued support of our charity in helping us to find homes for stray and abandoned animals in Merseyside. We couldn’t manage without you.

Dog of the month – Jake JAKE is a 12-year-old Jack Russell Terrier. There aren’t enough boxes to tick for this little fella, he’s got the lot! You certainly know when Jake’s around, and he loves to be outside, investigating. He’s a very active terrier, despite his age, and loves to explore. Jake will do his best to get your attention and won’t stop until he’s on your knee! He does get a little vocal when he’s around other dogs, and doesn’t always enjoy it when they get too close.

He’s toy mad, his favourite ones being anything soft or squeaky, and can live with children aged 10 and above. He’s also perfectly house trained, but would prefer a home where someone is around most of the time, as he adores company. If you think Jake could be the four-legged friend you are looking for please contact Dogs Trust Merseyside Call on 0300 303 0292 8am-8pm MonFri (closed Wed) and 9am-5pm Sat and Sun www.dogstrust.org.uk

W5s charge into Veterans inch an historic final South Liverpool team at the recent game against Chester Nomads at Jericho Lane Sports Hub.

By Jen Ratcliffe

LIVERPOOL Sefton W5s made club history at the end of February as they secured a spot in a cup final for the first time since the team was created. A dramatic game saw the ladies come from two goals down against Formby to draw 2-2. The excitement didn’t finish there and as Formby edged ahead 3-2, the girls responded fiercely and the final score finished 3-3. The game needed a result so a penalty shootout was going to decide who made it through to the final on March 23rd. Cool, calm and collected responses from both penalty takers and our goalkeeper meant that a save saw us going through for a shot at silverware. An outstanding season from the W5s has seen them be wildly successful in comparison to past seasons. Strong recruitment, dedication and an incredible team spirit has seen the team score more,

concede less and finish in a higher league position than anyone could have imagined back in September. The ladies have played free flowing, attacking hockey in part aided by the addition of a dedicated coach. Men’s Sefton player Jordan Smith, has helped to pull the two sides of the club together by committing his time and resources to help develop the W5s. The final takes place on Saturday March 23, venue tbc. We are also constantly accepting new players and we strive to ensure that anyone can play hockey with Liverpool Sefton. We welcome players from all backgrounds so if you are interested in taking part in hockey we have the full range of competitiveness open to you, from social/taking part up to regional/elite. You can email liverpoolseftonhockeyclub@ gmail.com or go to www. liverpoolseftonhockeyclub.co.uk for more information.

closer to title By Jim Stanway

IN THEIR first season under the South Liverpool FC banner, the Veterans are very close to clinching the first division title of the Cheshire Veterans League. After an 11-0 win over lowly Heswall, with striker Mark Ellison scoring five goals, the team are seven points clear with only two games to go. However the team’s only rivals are Rainhill Town and South need to avoid defeat in the away game later this month and then win their final game in April to be certain of winning the league. The Veterans dropped their first points of the season at bottom of the league Grappenhall when missed chances and a defensive mistake resulted in a 1-1 draw. A second half hat-trick by Hilel Alhanshaly saw the team crush Frodsham 6-0 and there is the possibility of a league and cup double if they defeat Harehill Tavern from Hyde (Greater Manchester) in the semi-final. The first team have had mixed results recently with the highlight being a Cameron Dalton hat-trick in a 3-1 away win against Hale that was actually played at Jericho Lane due to the poor condition of

Hale’s pitch. A last minute equaliser by Mason Nevitt saw a point gained in a 2-2 draw at Vauxhall Motors Reserves but the team were eliminated from the Liverpool Challenge Cup in a 3-0 home defeat to Richmond Raith Rovers where defensive mistakes proved costly. The reserves were also eliminated from the league cup by league leaders Page Celtic through a deflected effort and a last minute cross/shot. A 20 minutes period at the start of the second half could have produced an equaliser for the team but it was not to be. The youth team’s chances of winning the Liverpool Premier League youth division title have disappeared with two defeats in the last three matches. The loss to title favourites Moorside Park was a game of two halves with South dominating the second half but unable to score more than one goal to reduce the deficit to 4-3. A 4-2 defeat to Woolton Vikings has meant that the semi-final of the league cup, to be scheduled in April, is now their only chance of silverware.
