Rotary Club’s name change

WHAT’S in a name and why change it? We all know of Backrub, Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web, Il Giornale and Brad’s Drink, or do we? No, then maybe you know them now as Google, Yahoo, Starbucks and Pepsi Cola. So why the changes of some well known names and why did The Rotary Club of Liverpool Garston change its’ name to Rotary Liverpool South. As a club we know that change is common, that things change all the time and so does the identity of a Rotary Club. Our Club is not the same as it was in 1945 when we were awarded our charter in the name of The Rotary Club of Garston. We have had a change of name since our being founded in 1945 to The Rotary Club of Liverpool Garston. The main reason being that in a new, digital age with people googling for Rotary Clubs in Liverpool, we either could not be found online or were confused with The Rotary Club of Garstang, 10 miles north of Preston! The change of name made it easier for the club’s details and programmes to be found by visitors to Liverpool using their iPads, laptops and iPhones. Most people associate names of cities, towns and streets with small businesses, something that cannot be said for the family of Rotary. e na es ere t specific and did n t ull re ect t e area t at clu n ser es t e s ut end of Liverpool. Both names were nond na ic legac na es ic did n t fit it the new Rotary branding. So was our name holding the club back it ust eing ass ciated it a specific part of Liverpool (Garston)? Nothing wrong with Garston, the author was born and bred there! However the port town of Garston has changed since 1945 as has the Club. We now cover a much wider area than when we were founded hence the decision to change our name to etter re ect e are and t e area e ser e. e are n ficiall tar i erp l South and busy with our re-branding. New tabards, new name badges and an overhaul and re-branding of our Carol Wagon which still bears our original name. So look out for us in our new Rotary livery in the south end of Liverpool as the newly rebranded and innovative Rotary Liverpool South.

ADVERTISING ANNOUNCEMENT

This month we meet Christian Evans Partner at GAD LLP Solicitors, Personal Injury Department What advice would you give to someone who has been injured through no fault of their own? Act quickly and seek advice from a Solicitor who you either have experience of or who has been recommended to you, preferably local to you. You need to know your rights and what options are available to you so you can make an informed decision. Some clients, even with very serious injuries, believe they are entirely to blame or have been led to believe that the accident was their own fault and so don’t even seek a second opinion from a professional until it’s too late. What is most important to clients suffering a personal Injury? In my 18 years’ experience, I have represented clients across a wide range of personal injury areas and found that every client is unique, as are their aims. However they all want to know that they are being listened to and that those aims are understood by their Solicitor. Most want justice and to be placed back, as far as possible, into the position they were in before the accident as soon as possible. This could be by rehabilitation, treatment, replacement of goods and vehicles or financial compensation. Funding the case is usually of worry to a lot of our clients until we explain that if there are no other funding options available which are more favourable to them, we can offer a no win, no fee basis on cases we assess have reasonable prospects of success. This means that if their case is unsuccessful we do not charge for our costs. Which areas do clients need advice or guidance with? Initially our clients simply want to know whether they have a claim. The majority do and then we consider what our clients’ aims are, whether they’re achievable and how best to fulfil them. As mentioned, clients need guidance on how best to fund their case but it will be the advice on the issue of legal liability where the Solicitor will come into their own: proving not only that the accident happened in the way our client has said, but why the Defendants are responsible under the relevant law and that the accident has ‘caused’ the injuries sustained. If liability is denied and evidence provided to support that denial we have to assess the strength of that evidence, how we counter or undermine it and determine whether we need to issue Court Proceedings. At all times we advise but it is the client who ultimately makes the decision as it’s their case. Is there anything that clients often overlook? Most of our clients are well prepared when they come to us, have already obtained details of the other party, have photographs or sketch plans, taken contact details from witnesses which make our jobs so much easier. However nobody is expecting to have an accident and obviously their first priority is the injury itself and having the appropriate treatment and so they don’t think to gather any information at the time. As such it’s important as mentioned previously to take advice from a Solicitor as soon as possible who can advise on the information and evidence required before it’s lost or becomes difficult to obtain. They should keep any receipts or details of any expenses which are incurred as a result of their accident as they can claim not only for the injuries but also any financial losses including loss of earnings. How do you approach your work? I really enjoy my job and take huge satisfaction from achieving results for my clients. The vast majority of our clients are those who have instructed us previously or are recommended by family or friends who have been former

clients. We are hugely proud of this as it’s testament not only to the fact that we must do a good job but that people trust us to make that recommendation as it’s a reflection on them too. The other reason I believe we have such a high level of satisfaction is that we are open, friendly and approachable local solicitors with offices around Liverpool How do you prefer clients contact you? Whatever is most convenient to our clients. Whilst it’s preferable to meet or to discuss the case over the phone, as it’s sometimes easier to understand the accident circumstances and take full instructions, I am fully aware people have busy lives or work shifts and so contact via my email cevans@gadllp.co.uk or our website www.gadllp. co.uk are also ways to ask questions or provide information and instructions. What are the benefits of having more than one office in Liverpool? We like to make it easy for clients to work with us. Being local to clients makes it convenient and can save time. Which case especially pleased you in 2016? We settled a case which 2 other firms had rejected due to poor prospects but we believed could be successful by applying a different area of the law which had not been considered. Liability had been denied and fiercely opposed by the Defendants who went to the lengths of instructing private investigators to obtain surveillance on our client, with the hope of undermining their case. Ultimately the Defendants failed and the case settled for more than a quarter of a million pounds. The Claimant was more grateful about being believed and with us keeping faith with her throughout the case than the settlement. Why do clients choose GAD? We ask all our clients to provide feedback on their experience. We never take anything for granted and work hard for every client. Last year for example, 92% of our clients thought our service was either excellent or good and we won over 90% of all Road Traffic Accident cases we took on. Are there any time limits on claims? Yes, strict time limits apply for making a personal injury claim. Known as the limitation period, the standard period for commencing proceedings to bring a claim is 3 years. Failure to commence a court action within that time means the claim is likely to be statute barred preventing clients from claiming their rightful compensation. There are however numerous exceptions to the 3 year limit including claims in other countries, accidents causing death, children under 18 etc. and so it is again crucial you take professional advice as soon as you can, not only for advice on the limitation period, but to ensure the case is resolved before Court proceedings become necessary, where possible. How did you become involved in dealing with Personal Injury? I knew I wanted to be a solicitor since I was 11. I blame the influx of American legal dramas! However, it wasn’t until I went to University and was taught by a lecturer who had been involved in a road traffic accident which had killed his wife, left his daughter disabled and himself with spinal injuries that I realised what an important job a Solicitor could have in trying to help people rebuild their lives after a serious accident. Unfortunately my lecturer had been badly advised and the lasting effects had led him to retrain to become a personal injury solicitor and then a lecturer so he could highlight to future Solicitors the responsibilities

they would have not only to clients whose injuries can often be life altering, but also for their families and friends who also suffer. From that moment on, I didn’t want to be anything else. What needs to be proven in order to bring a successful claim? It’s a fallacy, often nurtured by the media and insurance companies, that there is a compensation culture, that ‘where’s there is blame, there’s a claim’. A victim of a personal injury can only be successful if they can prove the Defendants are negligent or have breached a statutory duty or Act of Law. A simple accident or where a Defendant has acted reasonably and complied with the relevant Regulations, no matter how serious the accident or injury, will not lead to a successful personal injury claim. As such most cases which do not have a cause of action in law are never pursued as a Solicitor of any worth would not want to waste their client’s time, or indeed their own, on cases which are not ultimately going to be successful. As well as proving the Defendants are legally liable for the accident, we have to show that the injuries sustained have been caused by the accident which is sometimes difficult if the client has pre-existing problems in the area of injury such as their back or psychologically. Tell me a little about yourself? I joined this firm in 1999 on work experience and enjoyed the working environment so much, I kept turning up! I was made Partner in 2007 and am joint head of personal injury. I love most sports, particularly football, and have this year taken up coaching my 7 year old son’s football team, which has given me a completely different insight not only into the game itself but the politics surrounding it, especially managing expectations… not of the kids, who are fantastic, but those of the parents! Finally if you could change any aspect of Personal Injury law what would it be? The systematic attack by the Government and Insurers over the last 5 years on Personal Injury Law. Whilst I agree the area had to change with the arrival of claim management companies who are not regulated to the same stringent levels as Solicitors and with the increase in the activities of Organised Crime and fraudulent claims, I think the scales have now gone too far in the Defendants favour and Claimants are at a real risk of not receiving the full value of their claim, or worse their rights to bring a claim for soft tissue injuries sustained in a road traffic accident like they can for any other accident removed completely, which was recently proposed by the current Government. This is a right enshrined in law and evolved through our Court system over 100 years. To think that it can disappear overnight is a huge concern and should be a worry to us all. More volunteers needed for Allerton in Bloom... SUMMER is on its way (hopefully) and it is the busiest time of year for Allerton in Bloom. Winter plants have to be removed and the planters are filled it summer bedding plants which brighten up Allerton Road and Rose Lane. We receive lots of comments about how lovely they look, and we do wish to continue with our work but we require

more help. None of us are getting any younger and a few people have left for various reasons, so we are looking for several more volunteers to help us look after the planters. It is not all work either, we have several social occasions during the year. A visit to a garden centre is planned shortly, and we always manage

t fit a c uple eals out during the year. If you are interested in joining us, come along to The John Brodie (next door to Chandlers on Allerton Road) on Tuesday 25th April at 7pm. and join us for a coffee or a drink and learn a bit more about what we do to keep Allerton “blooming” or telephone Margaret Spencer on 724-4115 for further details.

Tips to help you have five-to-10 portions of fruit and veg in a day

A COUPLE of weeks ago, news came out that we now need to have about 10 portions of fruit and veg a day for our general wellbeing. One of the reasons for this is because by the time we are about to consume these foods a lot of their elements have been destroyed through overcooking or being sprayed with pesticides etc, so we don’t really feel the feel the ull enefit t at d. Here are some tips that I hope will help: n Buy a food blender – these are absolutely brilliant for helping you achieve your fruit and veg intake in a

day. There’s so many great smoothie recipes about that are easy to put together and will give you what you need. You can even add some protein powder, which is what I do. n Add some berries to your breakfast or maybe some mashed banana or avocado on your toast n If you nee.d to snack either mid-morning or midafternoon, try having some low fat Greek style yoghurt and add some fruit. n You can also use some guacamole or humus, create dips with carrot, peppers or celery. n Add veg to your evening

meal. This is the best time to a e fi r us car s as ur body won’t be needing more ‘starchy’ carbs like bread, pasta etc... FREE seven-day trial (limited availability) – I’m looking for just six ladies to take part in a mini transformation challenge at my Boxercise and Weight Training program. This exclusive free ‘taster’ week normally is priced at £60. The program is due to start in April. For further details, please contact me – Paul 07887 868872; www. liverpoolpersonaltrainer.com

How to make coq au vin like a professional French chef

WHETHER you’re hosting a dinner party or simply wanting to try a new dish, this coq au vin (chicken in wine) recipe comes straight from the personal cookbook of gourmet French chef, Maynard. What you’ll need: 1 whole chicken 4 large onions 250g smoked bacon lardons 1 bunch of fresh thyme 4 cloves of garlic t sp ur 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 bottle of red wine 500ml chicken stock

To begin, slice the onions and garlic

and chop the thyme as you preheat a large non-stick frying pan. Fry the chopped onions, garlic, and thyme with the bacon lardons until they are golden brown. Then, remove them from the pan for later. Chop the chicken into pieces, leaving the drumstick and thighs on the bone, and cutting the breasts in half. Re-heat the same frying pan and fry your chicken pieces. Once they are g lden r n sprin le ur er them, and cook like a roux – until the sauce thickens. Now, pour the entire bottle of red wine into the pan with the chicken and allow it to come to a boil. Once it boils, transfer the chicken and wine to a slow cooker and add the onions,

garlic, and thyme as well as the chicken stock. Bring this mixture to a gentle simmer, and let it cook slowly for two to three hours, or until it is tender. Season it as desired, and serve it alongside mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables like cabbage or carrots for a warm, hearty dinner. Want to try your hand at even more complex dishes alongside Chef Maynard at his French cooking sc l u can find is c er holidays on GoLearnTo.com, which offers a range of cookery and other activity holidays including horse riding, painting, photography, yoga, and jewellery making that inspire you to learn as you travel.

Denim is back... Hey guys and welcome to April!!!! April is one of my fav months. The evenings are lighter, the days are brighter. Life always seems a little bit more inspiring to me. You can just feel the energy in the air. Plus I much prefer the fashion!! Well, the denim trend is back!!!! I don’t know what it is about denim dresses but I always have a bit of a thing for them! I think it’s because you can get so many wears out of them. It’s like the summer version of the LBD. They can easily be dressed up or down, worn it ats r pi ped up r t e evening with heels or over the knee boots. Denim doesn’t really date either and I bet if you look in your wardrobe the oldest items that you own and you pull out year after year will be denim. No matter what it is you can make a fashionable yet funky utfit. I love this Blue Premium Long Sleeve Plunge Denim Dress from Missguided (www.missguided. co.uk) that I wore for the opening of Hudson House last week. Priced at £50 it’s a little bit pricey compared to other styles but it felt like it was designer quality when it was on.

It will be one of those pieces that gets worn year after year. I teamed mine with a pair of Sherlina Nym Demin Over The Knee Peep Toe Boots from Ego ficial .eg .c .u . (they’re about £15cheaper than these style boots from other retailers). I’m a sucker for a bit of denim on denim and even though these didn’t quite have the same colouring they both had a distressed look which seemed to complement each other. I also wore these boots with this Blue Yoke Ruffle Detail Pinstripe Shirt Dress, again from Missguided. Priced at £28 it was the perfect outfit for a lunch date I had recently. If denim isn’t for you but you are wanting something amazing, maybe for a special event, ball or the races then check out KU Spendlove . I wore this gorgeous Black Sequin Off The Shoulder Catsuit for a charity event in the Malmaison and got so many compliments throughout the day.

Christakis relaunches Smithdown Road restaurant MANY Link readers will be familiar with both Christakis tavernas, the original in the city centre and the restaurant in Smithdown Road which opened a few years ago. Following an extensive refurbishment programme at their Smithdown Road taverna, owner Christakis and his family have now introduced to Smithdown Road the party nights for which their city centre taverna is famous, and the Link recently attended a lovely re-launch evening at Christakis (Smithdown Road) to celebrate both the refurb and the introduction of the party nights. The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Roz Gladden, and her family were amongst the many guests who attended and who received Christakis’ warm hospitality and a lovely night was had by all. Greek dancing, belly dancing, Greek music, DJ, great food, great hospitality – it was just like being on holiday in Greece! Owner Christakis said: “My family and I moved

to Liverpool in 1998 and in 1999 bought the old family restaurant Renos in York Street, now Christakis Greek Taverna. “Renos was originally run by my father-in-law and mother-in-law, who introduced traditional Greek Cypriot recipes and established a proud tradition of quality food and service. “Today we proudly carry on this tradition

both in the city centre and at Smithdown Road, giving our customers excellent food and brilliant service in a lovely Greek ambiance. “We buy all our produce locally and under my own personal supervision our chefs prepare you authentic Greek cuisine. “Our menu is very varied and we are famous in Liverpool for our party nights in the city centre.

“We are now excited to be bringing this to South Liverpool and hope all our customers new and old alike will enjoy their every visit to Christakis Greek Restaurant. “Eat healthy, live longer, eat Greek!” PARTY NIGHTS – Greek Dancing, Belly Dancing, DJ till 11.30pm (Friday and Saturday nights)

Vets run out of steam as Cup dream ended By Mick Titherington

Stoneycroft Vets 1, St. Vincents 3 There is often a cry in Vets football of “still got it” and there is no doubt that as footballers age their ability to retain tec nical pr ficienc and skill is maintained long after speed and stamina have steadil drained. So it was a case of experience v youth in this I-Zingari Combination Cup tie, with the Vets playing st t a uc unger t. Vincents side, currently lying second in the First Division t e pen age league. It was also something of a reunion with many of

the visiting team formerly turning out for the home clu . The game started with a bang with the Vets coming out of the starting blocks at a crac ing pace. Continuing in their recent form the Vets were able to display their class moving the ball about with precision and c nfidence. It was no surprise therefore when they took the lead with an early goal courtesy of the head of Kev rice. Shortly after, following a period of further dominance, t e ets n a penalt . The failure to convert the

subsequent spot kick proved t e a turning p int. The miss was the catalyst for the visitors to up their game and they gradually began to gain and retain possession as the pace previously shown by the sts egan t ane. eing forced back into their own half the Vets were proving resilient and were able to hold out until the 75th minute when the Saints drew level following a goalmouth scra le. The younger side then took over and were able to add to their total with another two slots and extinguish the ets cup pes.
