Befriending Service needs your support Do you have a spare hour or two to visit people who are lonely and isolated? Would you like to support our charity and your community by being a Volunteer Befriender? Volunteer Befrienders needed in Woolton, Gateacre and Hunts Cross Areas
WOOLTON Community Life provides a voluntary befriending service to the local community. The charity was set up by Dr George Kuruvilla of Woolton House Medical Centre as he became increasingly aware of a high level of elderly, lonely and socially isolated patients within the community, and how this is affecting their health and wellbeing. ese findin s are also supported by a wide breadth of associated
health professionals w o find low mood and ‘feeling depressed’ as a very common problem amongst the elderly patients who live alone. The elderly in our community are particularly vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness due to loss of friends, family, mobility or income. Social isolation adversely impacts not only on the individual quality of life and wellbeing but also on physical health. Our charity utilises targeted intervention of befriending for the socially isolated in our community, using the Asset Based Community Development Model. This model is supported by four General Practices within our local community who identify elderly patients who are lonely or socially isolated.

otential beneficiaries are evaluated by Dr George Kuruvilla using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale, which includes physical assessment e.g. blood pressure recordings and current medications. All patients are re-evaluated ‘post intervention’ to measure the changes made by the befriending service.
Befriending Service Our volunteer befrienders undertake regular weekly visits to beneficiaries in their homes. Befrienders provide a listening ear and friendship. They offer encouragement and support to beneficiaries to become involved in community activities. Having a befriender
also enables the beneficiary to attend our planned social events, go out shopping, walks to the local park, trips to garden centres and escorted visits to church. Our charity continues to develop with the generosity of all our volunteers, donators, supporters and partners, all have given their valuable time and commitment to Woolton Community Life. Our project is still in its infancy – but our early success mean that the demand for volunteer befrienders is growing. We want to support more of our lonely and isolated people and need volunteer befrienders from our community. WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP? What our advertisers are saying about us “I started an Adult Art Class business in early 2016. With Moira’s help at The Link I was able to place suitable advertisements and editorials that appealed to potential students. The response rate has been fantastic. My business is up and running and going from strength to strength. Thank you!” Alyson – Seasons Art Class Liverpool “I have been using the South Liverpool Link for advertising for the past year and a half. I have found it to be the most effective and cost effective print marketing in the area. Particularly useful as it is delivered through my target market’s letterboxes as well as being available at local businesses. I track success by the number of mentions I get and new customers advertising brings in and The Link is the only print marketing I now do. Prices are good and the service from Moira and the team at the Link is excellent. Would recommend”. Marjorie celebrates 100th birthday SOUTH Liverpool resident Mrs Marjorie Mallinson celebrated her 100th birthday recently. Marjorie, who received the traditional special birthday wishes from The Queen, had a lovely day and is pictured celebrating with her family and the staff at Woolton Grange. Marjorie was brought up in the Dingle area and went to school in Dingle Lane. She moved to Aigburth after marrying her husband Tom who we understand was in the Royal Air Force. Marjorie and Tom never had children but had a long and happy marriage until Tom passed away prior to Marjorie coming to Woolton Grange Care Home (High Street, Woolton Village) where she has been a resident since February 2012. I’m sure that all South Liverpool LINK readers will join us in offering Marjorie our heartiest congratulations and best wishes.

Dog of the month – John
LOVELY John, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier arrived at Dogs Trust Merseyside, and carer Kim promptly fell head over heels in love with him! She describes him as “a gentleman” who walks beautifully on his lead and is no bother to care for. He’s a very cuddly boy with a slight cheeky side that likes to run off with toys so that he can swap them for a titbit! John, who is around nine years old, was found as a stray so the team don’t have any background information on him, but they are confident t at e as lived in a home. e would fit well into a
home with children aged 12 and over so he can be a full part of family life. If you think John could be the four-legged friend you are looking for, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP.
It’s open 12pm-4pm every day except Wednesdays, when it is closed. You can also call on 0300 303 0292, 8am-8pm MonFrid and 9am-5pm Sat and un. o find out more about any of the dogs at the centre, visit www.dogstrust.org.uk
Cat of the month – Garston Ebony and four new-born kittens THIS little girl was discovered taking shelter in an alley in Garston. She’d been there for months. When we picked her up we got her checked over by the vet who said that she was about to give birth. And so she did - within a couple of days. Just got on with it, no fuss, nothing. I think she was just glad of a warm bed and regular meals to sustain her. We’ve called her Garston Ebony. She is such a friendly gentle cat. How she would have coped with tiny kittens living off scraps in an alley we have no idea. So, we’re looking for homes for Mum Ebony and her kittens. If you are interested please do contact us, Garston Animal Rescue, on 0151 494 0470 or 07745 167170. We always do home-checks, no exceptions. We’re not interested in your possessions, we just want to check that any animal we have rescued is going to a safe environment. And it gives you an opportunity to ask us any questions too. If you are interested in our work or would maybe like to support us then why not visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ GarstonAnimalRescue. We are also always glad of donated towels and unwanted clean bedding for the animals. Our small Charity Shop it’s at 62 Aigburth Road, L17 7BN, Tel . 0151 727 0515.

CSM is a relatively new company that is all about doors. We have replaced over 12,000 doors throughout the North West of England in many different homes with door openings that have developed irregular dimensions. Our approach is different from traditional methods used by most other door vendors. We rely on the very latest digital measurement technology. Our technology-based approach can capture the irregular dimensions that have developed in many door apertures. A computerized milling machine then interprets the digital measurement data and cuts the new door to match the door apertures exact dimensions. The measuring process is acutely accurate. The key benefit is that our technology eliminates the uncertainty and guesswork that many contractor door replacement companies have to contend with. Our doors are cut perfectly every time according to
each door aperture digital measurement. Furthermore, since this is an automated process involving very little manual labor, our milling machine can shape and prepare many doors per day, allowing us to supply and fit high quality precision tailor made doors . This enables us to offer door replacement services at a fraction of the cost of most general contractors who must rely on manual labor-intensive methods. Our innovative approach means that the old doors can remain in place until the day that we replace them with your new doors. Because we measure and cut doors to the actual dimensions of the door aperture, the new doors will generally fit better than the doors that we replaced. In addition to precision door cutting we also offer a spray finish that is of a high standard with colours, shades and lacquer of your choice, allowing you as a customer to enhance your
home with factory fitted doors that will be the envy of all your friends and family. We recognize that internal doors have become an important part of furniture in most homes as people strive for luxury. With over 13 years of experience replacing interior doors in the North West of England and further afield, we have confidence that you will agree that our Interior doors fitted in your home will impress and satisfy you as a valued customer. We are an innovative business that prides itself in delivering quality workmanship and great customer service. Our goal is to enhance the aesthetics and appeal of your home, and we don’t take that responsibility lightly. When working within your home, our specialist fitters will always carry out their tasks with the utmost care and respect. We value our customers both retail and trade and we aim to provide the highest standard of service.

Kidsfest 2017 needs you WOULD you like to be part of something BIG and join The James Bulger Memorial Trust in making KidsFest 2017 the best family festival ever? The James Bulger Memorial Trust (JBMT) invites community groups and volunteers to help them stage an amazing festival for families in Liverpool. So, whether you’re a member of a dance school, sports club or community group, JBMT welcomes you to join them at the festival’s new home in Stanley Park. KidsFest 2017 will take place in Stanley Park at the end of the summer holidays on Sunday 20th August and aims to give kids and families one last big adventure before school starts again in September. The festival provides a great platform for organisations to showcase their services and talents. Participating organisations are invited to come along and provide demonstrations and deliver workshops at the festival which has attracted
12,000 families to date. Individuals are also welcome to come and get involved as there will be plenty of volunteering opportunities on the day. The festival is organised by JBMT in partnership with Orb Events. The Trust was set up in memory of James Bulger who was cruelly murdered in 1993 at the age of two. Its mission is to organise holidays and respite breaks for deserving children and their families. Two years ago, they launched KidsFest – a free children’s festival – which was attended by 5,000 people in t e first year w ic rose to over 8,000 visitors last year. So, the organisers have lots of exciting plans up their sleeves to ensure it is even bigger and better for summer 2017, meaning more local families and children will be able to fun in the sun whilst supporting the James Bulger Memorial Trust. The festival will be packed with entertainment, activities, workshops and attractions to create a
fantastic family-friendly event in the heart of North Liverpool. With fairground rides, bouncy castles, balloon sculptures, a zip wire, soft play area and full main stage programme of entertainment it simply doesn’t stop there! James’ mother and patron of the charity, Denise Fergus, said: “I am immensely proud of the way that the people of Liverpool have taken this event to heart, we are so thankful to all the friends, supporters and organisations that have helped us to make it one of the largest free family focused events in the region.” If you’d like to get involved in KidsFest, please get in touch as soon as possible. HI guys and welcome to June’s edition of Life’n’Style with Ainsy……so my episode of First Dates was shown on Tuesday 9 May and all I can say is OMG!!! The amount of stories and press going around talking about my criteria list is CRAZY!!!! So if you haven’t seen the show and fancy an hour of humour check it out on Channel 4 catch-up! I seem to have created a lot of attention for putting together this 22-point criteria list that the whole world seems to be talking about. I made headlines in Spain, France, Italy, Germany and the USA – that’s as well as the national press and OK mag!! Hasn’t everybody got one of these lists??!! Right, ok yes I get it - mine is a bit longer than most people but I have had quite a bit of time to put it together!!! It has been 4 years!!! Don’t get me wrong I’m not complaining as my social media is smokin’ at the min with date requests! A Liverpool radio station are actually running a competition
to see if anyone fits my criteria and setting up a date for me so I’ll keep you posted on that next month!! As it’s a reality TV show I wasn’t sure how much of it was real and if any of it was going to be scripted but I’ve got to say EVERYTHING about the date is real and none of the production company get

involved at all which makes everything really easy. It’s just a normal blind date!! The waiters and waitresses are all so nice and really good with making conversation to break the ice when you sit down. You can pick anything you want from the menu… I was more for the cocktail menu though! Even though things didn’t work out with myself and Adam we both shared an amazing experience and I would recommend any of you singletons to give it a go!! If you are single and fancy a little evening on a date in London then apply on the website: www. firstdatescastin .co.uk At the weekend I went to the Exclusively Singles Event at Jenny’s Bar in Liverpool City Centre and wore this ‘Missi’ missoni style print suit from www. fashionistaonline.co.uk. t s a fine knit loose top and trousers with glitter thread which gives a lovely sparkle appearance. Ideal for summer evenings or dress down for day time occasions. I wore mine with these yellow wedges also from the same website. These are called ‘Shilo’ wedges and are available online for £25. It’s a fab little website that’s full of summer bargains so make

And they’re off...to Chester Races! By Moira Hesketh (LINK owner)
A GROUP of ‘girls’ from Bezzy Buddies recently had a great day out at Chester Races. Lynne, founder of ‘Bezzies’, organised yet another smashing event for us. Our starting point was The Old Stables (rather apt for a day at the races!), at Allerton Manor Golf Club, where we kicked off with a delicious breakfast and a lass of fi . A quick photo outside in the sunshine and then we were off! We then travelled by coach to Chester races where we had a great day and by golly the weather was with us. Needless to say there was plenty of cork-popping but after a couple I went on the G & T’s. You can’t beat a nice gin and tonic on a gloriously sunny day in my view. Oh, and I had to pace myself for the long day ahead of
course! A great day was had by all and we even managed to win a few bob……..and it really was just a few bob! Now although I have been to the races many times since I was a teenager I have never really had much interest in gambling and have always gone for the social side of it. I decided to put one bet on the seven races (an accumulator, I think). Anyway, I went to collect my meagre winnings and the bookie said ‘oh you’ve got six winners out of seven races. You would have won a lot of money if you had chosen no. 4 instead of no. 5 in the sixth race’. As I looked down, his till was bursting to the seams with £20 notes and he casually remarked ‘well, I certainly wouldn’t have been able to pay you out from this till’!
I asked him how much it might have been and he replied ‘well into 5 fi ures So that would have been at least £10k – pipped at the post but, never mind, as the old saying goes: ‘a miss is as good as a mile’! And who needs to win a bet when you are in great company and having a great day in great weather?! Before we knew it our coach was back to pick us up and return us to The Old Stables where we had a scrumptious three-course meal which was washed down with a nice bottle of wine. So it’s a big thank you from all of us to Lynne at Bezzy Buddies – a really good day was had by us all! If you would like to know more about Bezzy Buddies visit the website www.bezzybuddies.co.uk or call 07901 000014.

Protein is a molecule that contains about 20 amino acids, nine of them being essential, meaning that your body can’t produce them, and they must be taken in through food or supplements. Protein is the foundation of muscle tissue. n Why take in more Protein? If you are exercising, you will need to increase your protein intake as you are breaking down muscle fibres. e e tra protein will elp t e muscles recover from exercise and help them grow. The more muscle you can develop, the faster your metabolism will be. n ere will find rotein rotein can be found in meat poultry fis nuts e s and dairy products n How much Protein should I have? If you are exercising regularly, 1-1.5 grams of protein per day per kilogram of body weight. n Can I use a supplement? If you are going to use a Protein supplement, check the sugar content of it; otherwise, using a supplement is fine.

Most walks start at about 11:00am and the starting points are all accessible by public transport. Wear stout shoes or boots, bring food and drink. Join a walk to see some familiar, and maybe some new places. You have probably driven past “The Dream” many times – this is the chance to see it close up. Other places we will visit include the Formby Pinewoods – one of the few remaining habitats of the red squirrel; the pretty villages of Thorrnton Hough and Port Sunlight, and Liverpool’s historic city centre. Or you can really step out and join the Coast to Coast walk - from the River Mersey to the River Dee. What better way to take a break. Come with family or friends, or come on your own and make new friends. And of course get some good healthy exercise.

THIS gourmet wild mushroom risotto recipe comes straight from the professional kitchen Freya and Chef Maynard at their gourmet cookery school in the heart of the Loire Valley which you can find at o earn o.com. Risotto works as a nice starter but it is quite ric so keep t e portion small. It can also be served as a main course, perhaps accompanied by a green salad to cut t rou t e ric ness. What you’ll need (serves two): n onion – finely diced n cloves arlic – crus ed. n tbsp parmesan c eese – rated. n rborio rice. n 150g mixed wild mushrooms (or any variety you can et your ands on . n mascarpone c eese. n ml c icken stock. n tbsp butter. n salt and pepper to taste. n tsp olive oil. Heat the butter and olive oil in a medium saucepan and gently sauté the onion and garlic until they are translucent
but not coloured. Add the Arborio risotto rice and stir until the rice is coated with the oil & butter. Carefully add the chicken stock using a ladle and stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. As the rice absorbs the stock, keep adding more stock until the rice is just cooked and the risotto is nice and moist. Test this by putting it on a plate – it should spread out nicely Meanwhile clean the mushrooms (avoid using water, just lightly brush to remove any dirt) and sauté in a frying pan with a little butter until just cooked.

ADVERTISING ANNOUNCEMENT
This month we are excited to tell you about a new service – the launch of a fixed-fee HR Scheme as we meet Neeta Laing, Head of Employment at GAD LLP Solicitors What is the GAD HR Scheme? The Scheme is a fantastic service providing employment law and HR support at a fixed fee. Benefits of the Scheme include: • An advice line – direct contact with a specialist employment solicitor on HR and employment law matters • Ongoing advice and support – including drafting of letters on employee issues and guidance on procedures • Documentation - contracts of employment, staff policies and procedures • Comprehensive insurance cover indemnity against most awards of compensation and legal fees should one of your employees bring a claim against you • Regular employment law updates • Fixed monthly fee – for better financial planning
disciplinary and grievance matters, we are here to help. The list of potential claims an employee can bring is huge and can damage your business and its reputation. We can handle all of your HR issues including highly sensitive and complex whistleblowing concerns through to general disciplinary matters in a cost effective way. Not all employers have legally qualified employment law/HR advisors or HR managers available internally but need assistance on this highly complex area. Even if you have a dedicated person responsible for HR, we can work with them so that they have access to an experienced solicitor who specialism is employment law. Subscribers of our Scheme benefit from solicitor-led advice without the worry of charging by the hour as we operate the Scheme on a fixed fee.
• A reduction in management time and effort – allowing you to focus on your business
The Scheme can also be enhanced to include employment law consultancy services –this is on-site support again at a fixed fee and on-site employment law training.
Who would benefit from the Scheme?
Why choose us?
If you have employees, you would benefit from the Scheme. Compliance with employment law and HR matters can be an enormous burden. We can help you to navigate this ever changing area of law with your commercial objectives in mind. The complexities of employment legislation can be daunting. Our friendly and approachable team can help on any HR issues you face whether it is absence management, maternity rights or
You can trust us to provide friendly, personalised, tailored service free of unnecessary legal jargon! We will meet with you at the outset and properly understand your organisation and its objectives. We will advise you on your HR issues – we are there at the end of the phone or by email, guiding you through each issue leaving you to focus on your core work. We recognise that different clients require different types of support, whether you
need guidance on appropriate employment policies and procedures or you are more concerned about strategic HR planning, our team will help ensure that you meet the particular employment law challenges facing your organisation. You should also benefit from improved employer/employee relations as we are here to help with the positive aspects of HR too. We have a completely transparent pricing structure so you know exactly how much you will pay each month. The average cost of defending a tribunal claim is £9,000. GAD HR Scheme covers you for unnecessary costs. If a current or ex-employee were successful in their claim against your business, you would have to pay out for compensation as well as legal costs. The average pay out in Employment Tribunals is around £8,000. Without protection, your business could therefore be faced with costs around £17,000.
How do I obtain further information about the Scheme? GAD HR is tailored to your business and is not a ‘one size fits all’ product. Simply call 0151 494 0777 or email employment@ gadllp.co.uk for a free no obligation chat to see how we can help your business. GAD HR is essential protection for any business whether you are a small, medium or large company. We are also offering a free HR audit to readers of the Link. Please contact us for details.
How does the insurance work under the Scheme? The *insurance is optional and subject to insurance terms but covers the cost of most awards of **compensation and legal fees up to £250,000 per claim and £1m per year. So if an employee chooses to bring a claim, we will defend you and your legal fees and any award should be met by the insurer. The insurance policy also includes cover for the defence of a claim brought to you for Criminal Prosecution and your defence from actions arising out of the Data Protection Act.

*Legal Expenses Insurance is provided by Temple Legal Protection Ltd **Subject to terms and conditions
