Aintree University Hospital have recently admitted that there is a significant back log of patients waiting to receive treatment in one of the following sectors: ■■ Gastroenterology ■■ Hepatology [Liver Disease] ■■ Inflammatory Bowel Disease This means that around 10,000 patients have not received vital check-ups, monitoring or investigations, which may mean their condition has become worse or they have not recovered as well as they should have. This could lead to severe or permanent harm. The delay in treatment may have had a profound impact on your day to day life, your ability to work or may have even changed your life completely. Whilst some delays in treatment may have reasonably occurred due to covid-19, we have had experience of completely unacceptable delays which date back as far as 2016. Many patients are kept under close observation for monitoring of potentially fatal conditions such as cancer. If these conditions are not picked up on at the earliest possible opportunity, the delays in treating can be catastrophic for the patient and their family. Prolonged damage to essential organs may not be evident at the moment but may become an issue down the line and for that reason we would urge you to contact us to make the enquiry.

Teaching Adults How To Make It Up Liverpool hosts a rich trove of wonderful adult musicians. While only a few of them aspire to perform in public or become professional, most seek to attain skills in jazz and improvisation. To achieve this, they attend private lessons as well as weekly classes and workshops. A good example of this is the weekly Penny Lane Jazz Workshop, led by renowned jazz saxophonist and clarinettist, Frank Griffith. Frank has been performing for over 40 years, primarily in New York and London. More recently Frank has proved himself as a successful educator, teaching in both the USA and UK. Sessions are held at the Elm Hall Methodist Church in Liverpool (L18 1LF) and meet on Thursdays at 7-9pm. They can involve anywhere from 10-20 people, comprising mostly of saxophonists, guitarists, pianists, and a bassist and drummer. The group readily welcome more brass players and vocalists as well. If you would like to join in the fun, email Frank directly for more information: frank@frankgriffith.co.uk

Memorial bench honours local woman at Beechley On Wednesday 25 August, Beechley Stables took delivery of an amazing piece of architectural history in the form of a memorial bench. Kindly donated to the stables by the Oldham family in memory of their sister Liz Oldham-Ngyuen, who passed away on 7th January, the bench was crafted in nearby Hale. The piece was made using bellows from the industrial revolution to form the sides and had been saved and kept in the scrapyard of Liz’s family business, where she worked in all her life. The bellows, originally created by Linley & Bingham of Sheffield, would have been used when making horseshoes as far back as 1899 when the company was founded. Liz, known to many in the Merseyside area “as a supporting rod of steel” to her family, shared her passion for horses by teaching and running the Simmonswood Horse Shows. Many a local youngster had the privilege to win rosettes in lead reign events after coaching by Liz.
We feel privileged and grateful to the Oldham Family for allowing us and everyone who visits Beechley the opportunity to sit, pause and reflect on life, whilst sitting on this bench with a view of both the yard and the arena.

Taking Shelter Sirens sounded and people headed for air raid shelters which were everywhere, from streets and schools to parks and private gardens. The Second World War brought mass terror from the skies to civilian populations. This new form of warfare started in the earlier conflict between 1914 and 1918 but was limited in scale, largely confined to bombs dropped from Zeppelin airships.
A small concrete shelter (pictured) survives in Greenbank Lane, Sefton Park. Made in a factory and assembled on-site, it was originally covered with earth.
Since then, aircraft had developed beyond all recognition. Sophisticated bombers and fighter planes dominated the skies.
There were communal street shelters for people without gardens and others such as office workers.
Preparations for war started before the conflict began in 1939. One way of spreading information was a set of cigarette cards called Air Raid Precautions in 1938. Packets of cigarettes contained free cards - huge numbers of sets were avidly collected. The 50 air raid cards were designed to inform and instruct people about how to defend themselves from the effects of bombing.
The refuge room was an alternative, a designated space made gas and blast-proof as much as possible. Bomb blasts caused rushes of hot air that could kill instantly. Cellars or basements were recommended or rooms with few or no windows, flanked by a building or strong wall. People were advised to equip their refuge rooms with table and chairs, gum and paper to seal windows and cracks against gas plus food, books, radio and gramophone.
Air raid shelters and refuge rooms were created so people could retreat to relative safety.
Numbers of these retreats – where people could be confined for long periods - also had washing facilities, chamber pots and fire-fighting equipment.
For example, cards illustrated an unusual inflatable gasproof balloon shelter, a garden dug-out and refuge room. The most common were Anderson shelters, named after Sir John Anderson who was in charge of air-raid precautions. By the end of the war, three million of these shelters had been constructed, mostly in gardens. My aunt had one, later used as a coal shed.
Some shelters suffered direct hits, causing great loss of life, but generally, shelters saved numerous lives. Many thousands of Merseyside homes were damaged or destroyed, particularly in the May Blitz of 1941. Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, admission free.

Strange Tales
by Anton Valdemart
Top Hat and Tales Esmerelda had always had a vivid imagination but it was a chance discovery that took her brain into overdrive. There was a locked room at the back of the house where she had never ventured. “We don’t go in there Esmie - it’s full of junk,” Mrs Parker told her daughter. Naturally, this created a surge of curiosity. They lived in a rambling house overlooking Newsham Park, inherited from grandparents about the time Esmie was born. As an only child, her creativity was fed by all kinds of relics from a stuffed crocodile to vellum documents covered in copperplate writing. These objects helped stimulate her vivid imagination. She thought up all kinds of tales which became an attraction at family parties. “Where does she get them from?” was a typical reaction. Some were funny, others intriguing while most were too far-fetched to be believed.
There were finely dressed people in smart carriages. A wedding flashed before her eyes then she felt two invisible hands trying to pull the hat away from her. Mother gave Esmie a mild ticking off for going into the room but allowed her to keep the hat. Esmie was astonished at the visions the hat conjured up, even just looking at it. These intensified when she held the headgear. She told her stories to family and friends with the hat on a table in front of her. “Here comes Esmie with her top hat and tales,” became the cry at parties and get-togethers. One tale stood out. The topper was the focus of a prank - it ended up in a sooty chimney. “What if these stories are true?” Esmie thought to herself.
The locked room revealed something that would take Esmie’s talents to new heights.
One day mother announced a special visitor. Great uncle Kynaston, grandfather’s brother, was visiting from far away.
She located the key to the sealed room hung, rather obviously, behind a cupboard door.
After a jolly meal, the elderly man was given a seat by the roaring fire.
She bided her time and, when everyone was out, carefully turned the key and entered the room.
He seemed distracted and stared at the blazing coals as Esmie told her latest tale - complete with top hat.
Esmie was disappointed not to find something sinister like a skeleton or cobweb-festooned furniture like Miss Havisham’s.
She was halfway through when great uncle Kynaston suddenly sprang into life. His face went bright red and his eyes almost popped out when he saw the topper.
It was indeed, as mother had said, full of junk. In the centre of the room, on an old table, stood the top hat.
He spluttered with fury: “You’ve got my hat!”
Esmie picked it up and admired the silk covering and ornate coat-of-arms on the inside.
12
She put the topper on but it was so big it almost reached her nose. Immediately, all sorts of images materialised in her mind.

Liverpool Chimney Sweep’s Offer to Jobless Young People An expanding Liverpool chimney sweeping firm is on the hunt for the next generation of sootbusters. Mr Soot Chimney Sweep wants to give two unemployed young people a unique opportunity to take their first steps into the world of flues and fireplaces. The first role up for grabs is a trainee chimney sweep, while the second is a chance to work as a marketing assistant for the company, which has offices in the city’s historic Baltic Triangle. The vacancies are being offered through the Kickstart scheme – a government initiative aimed at providing opportunities for 16-24-year-olds who are on Universal Credit. Mr Soot owner David Sudworth said: “As a parent of teenagers, I know just how difficult it was for young people to secure opportunities even before Covid hit. That’s why I’m thrilled we are taking part in the Kickstart initiative. “It’s fair to say very few young people would normally consider working for a chimney sweeping company. But, for the right person, it can be an excellent career choice.”
David said it was also important that one of the roles offered was in the Mr Soot Marketing Team. “Marketing is a really competitive field and opportunities – especially for those who may not have gone via the university graduate route – can be very scarce indeed.” The roles come at exactly the right time for the company. “Even though we are only at the start of the busy sweeping season, it’s clear that demand for our services is greater than ever before,” continued David. “It’s an exciting time for the business, as we are now serving more customers, and responding to them quicker, than ever before. “The future is looking very positive indeed.” For more information on the job roles, visit www.mr-soot.com

Recipe
Pumpkin Pie A perfect dessert for Halloween, which is usually eaten in the US and Canada as part of Thanksgiving dinner. Serves: 8
Ingredients ■■ 750g pumpkin or squash, peeled, deseeded, and cut into chunks ■■ 350g sweet shortcrust pastry (make your own or buy ready-made) ■■ 140g caster sugar ■■ ½ tsp salt ■■ ½ tsp fresh nutmeg, grated ■■ 1 tsp cinnamon ■■ 2 eggs, beaten ■■ 25g butter, melted ■■ 175ml milk ■■ 1 tbsp icing sugar
14
Method Place the chopped pumpkin into a large saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil. Cover with a lid and simmer for 15 mins or until tender. Drain and allow to cool. The final colour of your pumpkin filling will depend on the colour of the squash you choose. They will all taste equally good! Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use it to line a 22cm loosebottomed flan tin. Chill for 15 mins. Line the pastry with baking parchment and baking beans, then bake for 15 mins. Remove the beans and parchment, then bake for a further 10 mins until the base is pale golden and biscuity. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Increase oven temperature to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Push the cooled pumpkin through a sieve into a large bowl to make a puree. In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, salt, nutmeg and half the cinnamon. Lightly beat together the eggs, melted butter and milk, then add to the pumpkin purée and mix well. Pour the mixture into the tart shell and bake for 10 minutes, Reduce the temperature to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and continue to bake for 35-40 mins until the filling has just set. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before removing the pie from the tin.

the artists who will be part of the 17-night trail will be unveiled next month. The autumn route will be designed to allow people to maintain social distancing, but anyone experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 should not visit the trail. Please note, there will no fireworks at this year’s River of Light event.

Plan welcomed for former Margaret Beavan School The West Derby Society (WDS) has welcomed plans for the refurbishment of the Grade II-listed former Margaret Beavan School. Liverpool developer Hassett Homes has unveiled proposals to convert the former school into 11 apartments. Twenty-one new homes will also be built in the grounds, which is part of the West Derby Village conservation area. The new development has been called Danson Park after cotton broker Danson Cunningham, who lived in the house originally called Eddesbury. Main access to the development will be a new road off Haymans Green, opposite Field House.

with Jade Ainsworth
Hey guys and welcome to my Life ‘N’ Style column! Well, I had sooooo many emails and messages after my last article that I think I should maybe start a dog column! You will all be glad to know, I’ve made the decision to get Dolly spayed in a couple of months. After reading all your messages of help and support and the stories of the people who have had their dogs done, I know she will feel so much better. What I would like to bring to a lot of people’s attention, after a scare we had with Fendi recently, is chewing gum. I monitor everything thing that they come into contact with but it seems not everyone knows how toxic chewing gum is. There is an ingredient that plays havoc with their insides and organs. Fendi managed to open my daughter’s bag last week and helped herself to a chewing gum. She chewed it but didn’t swallow it which helped the situation but a girl in work wasn’t so lucky as her poor dog died from it.
If your dogs get anything toxic, even if you are unsure, please take them to the vet. Fendi looked fine but my vet confirmed I was right to be concerned and to take her in straight away. After 4 hours of bloods and injections of glucose, she was fine to bring home and has been fabulous ever since, thank the lord! In happier news, last week was my daughter’s 16th birthday, and what a gorgeous birthday week we had. We took a little trip to London to the gorgeous Hakkasan in Mayfair. I’m loving the chain prints at the moment and I have 2 very similar outfits. One is from Flannels by Versace and one from PrettyLitteThing for a fraction of the price. The PLT version is a pair of shorts (£18) and a shirt (£25). The shirt is a great buy it can be used for so many different looks, like over a bikini as a beach shirt (which it actually is sold as ), but I pimped it up by tying it on this occasion. I also wear it open over a vest and leggings during the day with a pair of pumps. I love things you can dress up and down. The Flannels version is a pair of Versace Baroque leggings (£210 reduced to £149), which are soooo comfy and the Versace Baroque Printed Polo Neck Top to match (£210 reduced to £149). Till next time, Love Jade x

dog of the month NAME: Brock BREED: Lurcher AGE: 5 Brock is a gentle boy who actually looks like a small Greyhound. He’s been through quite an emotional time of late and would love to find a home where he can settle quickly back into a comfortable routine. He is playful and has lots of energy, and just loves an off-lead zoomies session on the field. He can become a little overexcited at times and get anxious, as he just adores people and craves company. Brock does get along with some other dogs but he can bark at them initially and be hit and miss at times. He’s probably best as the only dog at home, but with some quiet friends outside for walkies. He is house trained and can live with children of secondary school age, and once he has settled in, Brock should be fine to be left alone for a couple of hours. If you think Brock could be the four-legged friend you are looking for, you can find out more by visiting Dogs Trust Merseyside’s page at www.dogstrust.org.uk. You can also follow the doggy ‘tails’ on Twitter @DT_Merseyside and Instagram, @dogstrust_merseyside.
cat of the month This is Coco, she’s 10 years young and finds herself looking for a new home. She’s got lovely long hair and will need to be the only cat at home. If you think you could offer Coco, or any of our other cats, the home they deserve then please do get in touch! For adoption enquiries please contact Garston Animal Rescue on 07913 420 341. October - November 2021
South make solid start to the season Having finally achieved promotion to the North West Counties League after all the problems caused by the pandemic, South Liverpool FC have made a very satisfactory start to their first season in semi-professional football for 30 years. After the first ten matches, the team lie seventh with four wins and three draws. Virtually every game has been extremely competitive and South could have picked up points in every game. The highlight has probably been the 4-2 home win over Ashton Town with the team coming back from 1-0 and 2-1 down in front of a 300+ crowd which was an attendance record for the new facilities at Jericho Lane. 25th September will be a historic day as the club enter the FA Vase
the Sunday Veterans reserves defeated High Lane from Stockport by 8-1.
Owen Hough scores South fourth under the lights
for the very first time with a home tie against Dronfield Town from the Northern Counties East League. The team received a walkover in the first qualifying round with their opponents declared ineligible for the competition. Most of South’s junior and open-age teams have only just started their league campaigns but two of the club’s veterans teams started off with a bang last week. The Saturday Veterans firstteam drubbed MCL Vets by 7-0 while
The club’s open-age reserves had a great start to the season but find themselves mid-table. The club’s open-age third team have made an even better start to their first season in the West Cheshire League third division, winning four out of five.

Stoneycroft hoping to build back better After the trials and tribulations presented by the global pandemic, the prospect of some degree of normality returning to the local football scene has been met with delight. For Stoneycroft, the hope was for the return to form that saw them take divisional titles and Cup silverware. Their season kicked off against league newcomers Frames FC at Liverpool FA headquarters, Walton Hall Park. The game turned out to be an evenly fought encounter with both teams producing bouts of fluent, fast-flowing football with plenty of goalmouth incidents.
Fortunes fluctuated and soon after Stoneycroft had equalized to make it 2-2 the hosts regained the lead within minutes. There was still time for further drama however when the visitors were left mystified by the referee, who added to a number of strange decisions by ruling out what looked like a perfectly good goal for offside in the dying minutes. As disappointed as they must have been not to share the points, the ‘Croft were able to take many positives from the performance. For the second game on the road, the Maiden Lane based outfit travelled
By Mick Titherington
to St. Helens to take on St. Helens Town D.S. In contrast to the previous game, this turned into a scrappy affair interrupted by a period of scintillating football from the visitors midway through the first half which saw them cruise into a three goal lead, including a brace for the in-form Ben Williams. The second half turned into an uninspiring spectacle with Stoneycroft easily nullifying any attempts by St. Helens to rescue anything from the game, happy in the knowledge that the three points were secure.
