GAD Legal to double its turnover by 2025 Liverpool based Gregory Abrams Davidson is to grow its commercial division in Liverpool and London as the firm looks to increase turnover to £8 million by 2025. The firm, which has a turnover of £4million and employs 45 people at its five offices, has seen demand increase for its commercial services over the past 18-months. The management team is now planning further expansion through organic growth, lateral hires, and acquisitions. Demand for its commercial services was fuelled by a rise in merger and acquisition work, specialist Social Housing advisory services, and a sharp increase in companies needing advice about developing, acquiring and selling e-commerce operations. Brexit also influenced the commercial division’s revenue growth, with its specialist US Legal team witnessing strong demand. Jonathan Abrams, Director of Business Services , commented on the firm’s growth plans. He said: “In 2025, we’ll celebrate our 45th year in operation and to mark the occasion we want to see the firm hitting the £8 million turnover mark. While 2020 paused our initial growth plans, demand for our commercial services remained strong with specific service lines seeing decent growth. These factors helped us decide to rebrand the business division as GAD Commercial in 2021. With Brexit, many clients large or small have been looking to start and expand operations in America, so our US Legal Services team were, and still are, in strong demand. Lockdown also prompted an increase in take-up for commercial, legal and compliance guidance to e-commerce business owners which has also fuelled additional growth. As people continually reflect and adapt to changes in work-life balance, many entrepreneurs are viewing the low barriers to entry of e-commerce and distance selling as achievable business opportunities and we are forecasting that this area will continue to grow significantly.”
In early 2020, the firm also recruited Mark Alexander from international firm BLM Law to head the real estate team and grow the department following retirement of former partner Barry Davidson. Jonathan added, “Mark’s arrival helped drive fee income which saw the team advise on commercial property projects including a number of significant developments with a gross developed value in excess of £50million over the past 12 months. As a result we’re looking to increase headcount in the Real Estate team. 2021 has provided us with cautious optimism and with the easing of lockdown restrictions, we’ve certainly seen an increase in businesses needing expert advice. As a team, having doubled corporate and commercial business over the past 5 years, we’re extremely confident we can achieve our gross fees goal of £8 million in time to celebrate our 45th anniversary.”
Accident or injury. Not your fault? You’ll want us on your side.

Mayors unite to open one of world’s healthiest buildings In what was their first joint public event since being elected, Mayor Joanne Anderson and Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram officially opened one of the world’s healthiest buildings on Friday 21 May. The landmark building, The Spine, based in Paddington Village, has been designed according to scientific and medical research principles and is on track to be one of the healthiest workspaces for mental health and physical wellbeing in the UK. It is the first Grade-A office building in the city region for more than a decade and will also be the highest in the city, sitting proudly at the eastern gateway to the Knowledge Quarter Innovation District. Its eco-credentials are boosted by three double-height spaces, with planters containing high-oxygen-producing plants, a large number of cycle spaces and electric car charging points. The building, which has generated a social value to the local economy of £28.9m, will be heated by a low-carbon heating
exchange based within a brand new car park, which is due to open in July this year. As well as The RCP, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has taken a floor, with the City Council in negotiations to complete the occupancy.

Welcome to your June/July issue of the Liverpool LINK. I hope you have all been enjoying the lifting of restrictions and reconnecting with friends and loved ones. Whilst staying safe and cautious I might add! What a rollercoaster this has all been. Thinking back to that first national lockdown in March 2020, we had no idea how things were going to develop, and yet here we are, seemingly ever closer to getting back to life as we used to know it. At least, that’s the situation at the time of writing!

Book review: The Squirrels who Squabbled This picture book is already becoming a firm favourite with children – and you can see why. It is autumn and all through the forest creatures are busy storing up the food they need for the winter. All that is except one squirrel: Spontaneous Cyril. As usual, he doesn’t bother with that. He imagines he can grab some food at the last minute. Then the last minute arrives and he spies a fat pinecone, full of lovely nuts. It is just what he needs, and he sets off to acquire it. But he isn’t the only one eyeing it up. Plan-Ahead Bruce has also seen it. His store is getting on nicely and this is the perfect pinecone to finish it off. Who will get to it first? With wonderful illustrations and text to match it, this book teaches the value of teamwork to young readers.

Strange Tales
by Anton Valdemart
Mac the Giant Killer Cyril MacDonald ran his high street shoe shop with great pride in the quality of his stock, promoting the popular business with flair and imagination. Mac, as he was universally known, was particularly proud of his award-winning window displays which he created with artistic flair. While rivals might simply pile boxes together in a heap, he had boots, shoes and even slippers in specially-creative settings.
The giant boot arrived wrapped in a sack on the back of a cart. People looked askance as Mac stood, in his elegant suit, astride the boot waiting for Dobkins to shop fitter to put it on display. Soon it was hanging from a metal bracket over the shop front, gently swaying in the breeze. Mac’s creative mind soon came into play regarding the curious sign.
Mac hired artists to paint backdrops appropriate for the footwear. Wellington boots were seen sloshing in realistic puddles with a lifelike footpath meandering into the distance.
He wove stories around it and when he put a huge wooden club into his window the flamboyant shopkeeper was dubbed Mac the Giant Killer. The boot and club were trophies he had acquired from a nasty giant, he mused. Soon there was an enormous high-heeled shoe hanging next to the boot - wrestled from the giant’s wife, the story went.
A dainty pair of dance shoes were placed in a true-to-life ballroom alongside musical instruments and sheet music. People would go out of their way to look at the displays, considered entertainments in themselves.
Even the children weren’t fooled so Mac made up other tales to keep them and their parents entertained.
Children pressed their noses against the glass, examining the frequently changing contents. “Look at those funny shoes,” said Gwen to her friend Nora on their way home from school. They and everyone else were astounded and puzzled when the moccasins went on display - the first seen outside London. Even the rector bought a pair for his quieter moments. Mac decided he needed a new display sign, a traditional means of attracting customers. His grandfather’s wooden signboard might still be swinging but it was long out of date. Mac persuaded Gadthorpe the cobbler to create an enormous boot to hang outside the shop. It was realistic in every detail including burnished and matt leather, laces and a tab above the heel.
8
The moors above the town had an eerie reputation going back generations - a reputation Mac tapped into for his fables. One night there was a terrible storm. Lightning flashes filled the sky, thunder growled and the earth shook. Next day the giant boot and shoe were gone. Leading up the lane were huge footprints in the mud, footprints that disappeared into the swamp. Two weeks later two gigantic wellington boots appeared hanging outside Mac’s shop. “Don’t get caught out like the giants,” said Mac to windowshoppers. “We have new lines in wellies.” They quickly sold out. read my next Strange Tale in the Link: Up, Up and Away.
Tips for dining ‘al fresco’ Open the kitchen door and head outside with these tips for enjoying meals in the garden this summer. In Britain, we tend to take advantage of every precious dry warm day or evening by spending as much time outside as we can. It is especially nice to eat al fresco and evoke memories of holidays abroad on sunny balconies or beachside cafes. Perhaps you have a garden table and chairs from previous years ready to be used, and a trusty barbecue just waiting to be lit. If you’ve been following the trends, an outdoor kitchen is all the rage, complete with a sink and worktop for preparing and serving food. And this year’s barbecue is actually a smoker which is designed to cook meat and fish at low temperatures, producing lots of smoke to enhance the taste of your food. Choose between American-style smokers, electric, and even portable models. There’s something to suit all needs, from large capacity for entertaining, to smaller, budget models. Or perhaps this is the year that Dad builds his longed-for garden bar.
Set the scene with stylish and practical outdoor rugs and floor cushions designed to cope with any sudden shower. You might want to go for a colour theme or have a bit of fun and decorate your garden with bunting or even funky flamingos that you can pick up from garden centres and larger supermarkets. ILLUMINATIoN Lighting will add to the atmosphere as the sun goes down. Why not opt for strings of small lights that you can drape around structures in your garden, like a pergola, or loop between stakes placed around your seating area? Solar powered lights in all sorts of styles and colours can be picked up fairly cheaply and are very effective. A SHADy SpoT
TAKe A SeAT If you’re thinking of having a party, inviting family, friends and neighbours over, it’s well worth taking stock of the seating arrangements just to make sure there’s somewhere for everyone to perch while they eat. But there’s no need to rush out and buy chairs, as it’s fun, and perfectly acceptable, to improvise and be creative! Picnic rugs thrown over boxes are great for garden parties, and wooden pallets can easily be upcycled to create garden seating – simply add cushions for comfort.
On our hottest days, the sun can be pretty intense and too much for some, particularly at lunchtime. Be mindful of how the sun moves across your garden, and place your seating area accordingly so it is in the area shady for longest. Offer shade with a large parasol whose angle you can alter, or a trendy triangular sail-style shade that you can position across your seating area. Top TIpS ■ Plant up containers with scented plants, like lavender, close to where you sit so that you can enjoy the fragrance. ■ Grow herbs like mint and coriander in decorative pots and pinch leaves to add to drinks and salads.
If every adult in the UK spent just £5 per week in their local shops and businesses, instead of online, at supermarkets or with the huge multinationals.
It would be worth 10

Trevor Langley’s Guide to Wine & Spirits
Wines worth locating: Il Roncal Italy is renowned for producing many high-quality products, from cars to designer fashions and much more. Visitors to Italy return year after year and take much pleasure in the landscapes, beautiful coastal areas, plus culture, arts and history of the country. The wines that Italy produces are very impressive, with many being award-winning. Numerous wine producers have olive groves also and Italian olive oils are most excellent, along with their wines. The Il Roncal Estate is located on the Montebello Hill, near Cividale del Friuli and was founded in 1986. Ribolla Gialla I found to be an excellent dry white wine. Produced using 100% Ribolla Gialla grapes, the bouquet is both fresh and enticing. The mouthfeel and palate continue the enjoyment of this production, especially with fish and seafood dishes. Spumante Brut is most excellent, too. This white sparkler utilises 50% Chardonnay and 50% Ribolla Gialla grapes. The fine perlage provides a very acceptable experience, with vibrancy and freshness. Splendid to commence a meal and to accompany seafood dishes, etc. Civon is a very popular dry red wine. Carefully-selected, hand-picked grapes follow with the containment in French oak barriques and then on to stainless steel tanks, before bottling. A ruby-red colour greets the eye and an intense bouquet pleases. Full-bodied, for the mouth’s pleasures, it is then smooth for the palate. A wine that will cellar very well.
Perfect with red meats and game. Verduzzo Friulano has 100% grapes, of the same name, to produce this superbly sweet dessert wine. Golden-yellow, in colour, the nose is of sweet fruits. Absolutely, a pleasure on the palate and great to pair with cakes and many desserts. These are just a selection, from the range of productions by Il Roncal, which also includes very impressive extra virgin olive oil. Il Roncal is also a resort, utilising the old mansion, that offers comfortable rooms which overlook the vineyards. Guests’ comforts and memorable experiences are high on the agenda for Il Roncal, which prides itself on delivering a holiday of interest and information, as well as peace, with guided tours of the vineyard and tastings being very popular, indeed. As always, enjoy!

Treasure on the High Seas Privateers trawled the waves for enemy ships to plunder - in Liverpool they were very big business, sometimes bringing vast rewards. These were armed, privately-owned ships holding a government commission for use in war. They were particularly active during the American War of Independence and against the French in the 1770s. Between August 1778 and April 1779, 120 privateers were fitted out in Liverpool. The ships totalled 30,787 tons, carried 1,986 guns and were crewed by 8,754 men - all with a chance to share the loot. In 1777 alone it was recorded that 13 seamen each received £1,828 as a share of prize money (about £183,000 each today). To put this in perspective, a House of Lords enquiry into damage caused to commerce found that 559 British ships had been destroyed or taken, then worth a total of £1.8 million. However, the injury to American business amounted to about the same amount. Liverpool historian James Picton wrote a century later: “The privateer crews were very naturally a rough and lawless set, the terror of the town when on shore, committing many outrages.” These included breaking into a guardhouse and releasing men who had been rounded up by the Press Gang. This was a unit employed to enlist men forcibly into the Royal Navy, wandering the streets for prey. American privateers also roamed the seas - the most notorious was Paul Jones who harried shipping in the Irish Sea.
Liverpool privateer and slave trader Captain Peter Baker hit the biggest jackpot after he built a ship called Mentor in 1778. Her planned owners thought she was not seaworthy and Baker faced ruin. He fitted Mentor out as a privateer and struck it rich when he captured the French East Indiaman Carnatic. Valued at £135,000 - around £13 million in today’s money it was the richest prize taken by a Liverpool privateer. Baker built Carnatic Hall in honour of his trophy and purchased the manor of Garston with the proceeds. The hall was rebuilt later - a huge, opulent house off Elmswood Road, Mossley Hill. The spectacular staircase under a towering dome is pictured in 1947. Carnatic Hall was sadly demolished in 1964. At that time one contemporary considered the Hall was “singularly lacking in architectural grace”, a view not shared by many today. Hi guys! Welcome to my summer issue of Life ‘n’ Style At long last, the time has come to get a little bit of normality back into our lives! If you know me, you will know my pet hate is cooking. I just hate the whole process, starting with the food shopping... to then putting it away… thinking of what you want to eat. By the time I get to the actual cooking part, the novelty has worn off and I don’t even feel hungry! So needless to say, I am absolutely thrilled to be able to eat out again. Last week, I took a little trip to Manchester Restaurant Bar And Grill with my daughter. We had a really nice meal before doing some shopping. It was nice to just get out, have a little walk around and actually look at clothes in real life rather than on a phone or computer. I bought one of the new season Isabel Marant Etoile flocked tie-dye hoodies for Jaz as I thought it would be ideal to wear with a pair of jeans or shorts depending on the weather situation. On the day, I wore a lovely shirt by Glamify Fashion which is part of their latest Spring/Summer 21 Collection. The shirt features a pretty pink and blue print and can be worn tied at the waist or as a normal shirt. The arms have lovely balloon sleeves that just give it an extra elegant touch. Priced at £25, it’s an absolute bargain! Check out their website www.glamifyfashion.com they have a huge range of summer essentials that are so easy to wear. Affordable and you can dress them up or down.

Another boutique I am loving at the minute is @Jessica__ boutique on Instagram. If you follow my grid, you will see I wear something from their website every week. They have some amazing little gym sets, hoodies and leggings, if you’re looking for casual day wear and they also have some really nice blazers, pants, tops and dresses for an evening. Make sure you give them a follow and watch their stories as they have some really good discount codes and offers on. If you use JADE10, you will get 10% off anything you buy. That’s it from me this time but I will be back soon with my next edition. Love Jade. x

Has COVID-19 changed our eating habits for the healthier? What we eat is habitual, in fact, when and whether we eat tends to be habitual too – which makes the data that emerged after lockdown all the more interesting. Will these habits continue or will we see another shift? It has been suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic and the links that have been drawn between being unhealthy and chances of survival, are what is driving these changes in our eating habits. Following that logic, it is likely that many of these new healthy eating habits will be here to stay, even as we emerge into a post-covid world. For example, lockdown did see a rise in home cooking, although it wasn’t necessarily all soups and salads. Baking is back Did it ever go anywhere? Either way, data from Google Trends shows that searches in the UK for many home baking recipes such as hot cross buns, cinnamon rolls, banana bread and soda bread have risen sharply since lockdown. Although baking isn’t particularly healthy, we can’t say it is a bad thing to see more people ‘getting their Mary Berry on’ in their own home, particularly with Christmas upon us! organic appreciation There has been a surge in demand for organic and sustainable foods, with retailers reporting a large increase in sales for organic products. Perhaps this is because organic products are viewed as healthier? Research supports this, showing that organic foods have more nutrients than conventional foods – with between 20-40% more antioxidant compounds.
Habits are changing Eating behaviour is a behaviour that has been learned and ingrained over the years; however, it is clear that the COVID-19 event has caused a significant shift for the better in the habits of some, but not all, people. Some people put it down to a greater awareness of how what we eat translates to our overall health; others have put it down to just having more time available, which they have used to learn and cook new recipes; whereas there is also a suggestion that being stuck at home has meant less exposure to unhealthy temptations in the office or eating out. Some habits are changing for the worse Although the online data and findings of various polls are showing that more people have changed their eating habits for the healthier, some have reported that they are eating less healthily in response to the crisis. Being stuck at home with more time on our hands hasn’t been great for everyone. Many have been filling this time with snacking, and around 11% of the people asked in a recent Dutch study reported they had started drinking more alcohol as a result. Despite this, the overall data points toward a desire from more people to buy and make healthier food than not. So it seems that COVID-19, at least for now, has changed our eating habits for the healthier. Whether this continues for the foreseeable future will be interesting to see.

South Liverpool FC celebrate promotion in that division. The Saturday veterans reserves are currently second in the second division and their final league match will probably decide whether they remain there.
30 years since they left the semiprofessional ranks and 10 years since the club moved to the West Cheshire League, South Liverpool FC have gained promotion to the North West Counties. They will be playing in the Northern Division next season after the recent announcement by the Football Association. Along with Ilkley Town from West Yorkshire, South Liverpool finished top of the eleven candidates who had applied for promotion in the North West of England. The club’s first team were surprisingly eliminated in the semi-final of the West Cheshire League Cup by local rivals, Marshalls, by 6-3. This was only a month after the team had finally won the previous season’s cup competition, the shortest time any club had ever held the prestigious Pyke Cup. The team lie three points clear at the top of the first division table and with only a game to go, only a weird

combination of results involving the team and their nearest rivals, Mossley Hill, will deny them the league title. The final game at Maghull on Whitsun Bank Holiday Monday will hopefully provide a perfect send-off for the team. Many of the club’s teams will carry on playing into June with the promise of further silverware. Two of the club’s teams were denied places in cup finals by the curse of the penalty shoot-out, the open-age reserves and The Sunday veterans first team. The Saturday veterans first team lost a crucial title decider to St Aloysius but successive wins consolidated runners-up position in their first season
The club’s youth team have to rely on other results to win the league but face Litherland Remyca in the final of the league cup. Finally, the club’s third open-age team, having already clinched the first division title, have made progress in the league cup competition to the semi final stage, to be played in June.

Season finally fizzles out for ‘Croft What a year and what a season. The pandemic has affected every aspect of life, and football has been no exception. Lockdown restrictions led to the suspension of the season and left clubs idle. For some time, it was touch and go whether the league and cup programmes could be completed.
For Stoneycroft, on the one hand, they found themselves on the wrong end of some heavy drubbings, leaking goals like a sieve, and then on the other, showed some fine spirited performances earning them enough points to finish mid-table with hopes of promotion dashed.
In the end, the league administrators gave the go ahead for the resumption of fixtures. Clearly the absence of competitive games affected teams quite differently and, consequently, some strange results were recorded.
Clearly the absence of key players and manager Paddy McBride through illness has had an adverse impact but stand-in Andy Wilson has to be commended for steadying the ship. All in all though, it will be a season to forget, for many reasons, not all

of them on the field. In football hope springs eternal, so all teams will look forward optimistically to next season with fingers crossed for an uninterrupted campaign. Stoneycroft will be one of them. The pandemic has presented many challenges to clubs and all will look forward to happier times. To all those who have suffered and are still suffering, they are wished a speedy recovery. Our thanks go to medical staff and key workers for the sterling work they have done throughout an unprecedented set of circumstances.

Help protect what you love – get your vaccine New Mayor of Liverpool Joanne Anderson is joining public health officials in urging people to get their Covid-19 vaccine if they are eligible. With the easing of restrictions, alongside new variants emerging, there is growing evidence we are once again at a critical turning point in our response to coronavirus. The UK vaccine rollout has so far saved over 12,000 lives and prevented
around 33,000 hospitalisations. Although new data suggests that new variants can spread more easily, the vaccines are still working to prevent people from getting gravely ill. Booking your vaccine is easy, please go to www.nhs.uk/conditions/ coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirusvaccination/book-coronavirusvaccination/ or phone 119.

Liverpool at the helm as cruises return
Liverpool is set to make waves this summer, with cruise ships returning for the first time in 14 months.
Inaugural visits are expected from MSC Virtuosa, Marella Explorer and the much-acclaimed Anthem of the Seas, boasting the world’s tallest viewing deck - a staggering 300ft above the waves. There’s also a welcome back to old friends, including Fred Olsen, whose brand-new ship is scheduled to make 20 visits to the city
before the end of 2021 and, for the first time, Disney Magic will not only be calling at Liverpool, but passengers will be able to embark on their trip from the city. And the summer season wouldn’t feel complete without a visit from a Cunard, with the Queen Elizabeth expected during the late-summer.
Liverpool Aquarium and Planetarium get makeover The Planetarium is undergoing a major upgrade and new equipment is set to transform visitor experience with new shows at World Museum starting in June 2021. A state-of-the-art system with ultra-high-definition projectors and with surround sound will give a fully immersive experience. New shows will include “The Edge of Darkness” which reaches the outer limits of the
Solar System, and a show for younger visitors about “The Little Star that Could”. The refurbished aquarium at the World Museum will also reopen to the public in time for the summer holidays. Work includes replacing five of the tanks, and redesigning some of the other areas within the gallery. They will also welcome a common octopus called Polpo, from Portugal.
Liverpool’s libraries enjoy page-turning chapter Our libraries are marking a bumper year of borrowing – although their doors have been open far less than usual. During the pandemic, the city’s digital library saw an 80% surge in borrowing since the first lockdown with an incredible 242,744 downloads up to March 2021. In the last lockdown alone, until libraries started to re-open on 12 April, 32,490 ebooks were downloaded.
Not only that, the number of people registered as borrowers for the digital library increased 68 per cent in the same period. The libraries also set up an order-andcollect service, where books could be collected from some libraries at prebooked times. In total, 33,358 items were issued as part of order-andcollect and the Home Library Service.

How to create a wildlife-friendly garden “Every space in Britain must be used to help wildlife.” David Attenborough To put it bluntly, our insects are in trouble. At the present rate of decline, we could lose nearly all our insect life within 100 years, and without insects human life itself is under threat. But the good news is we can help. In this article, we look at the first steps you can take to creating a wildlifefriendly garden with no chemicals by building a troop of insect helpers.
■ Leave small areas of grass uncut over summer. Leave circles of long grass to look artistic and natural, the daisies, clover or vetch will come through as highly favoured food for your insect friends. ■ Be generous and crave a lawn that feeds the wildlife rather than a sterile bowling green look, and go green with less paving! 2. Water your troops
Let’s start with the facts ■ Blue tits take 10,000 caterpillars to feed one brood of fledglings. ■ One lacewing larvae eats 200 aphids a week. ■ Spiders, which you may shudder to approach, are actually your first line of defence against flies, cockroaches, earwigs, mosquitoes, fleas, clothes moths and ants. Spiders eat 400-800 million tons of insects a year! ■ One ladybird will consume up to 5,000 insects in a lifetime - think rose protectors! Nature is designed in balance so beneficial insects feed on pests, but it’s important we allow this balance to develop.
Build up your troops Planting trees and hedges are vital to reduce your own intake of air pollution but they also provide vital food and shelter for birds and insects. 1. feed your insect troop ■ Plant shrubs and flowers that provide nectar and pollen in each season. ■ Choose shrubs that insects love - cotoneaster, hebe, lavender, buddleia. ■ Choose many different flowers - select single not double blooms, crocus, snowdrop, hellebores, alliums, foxgloves, sunflowers, mint, marjoram, honeysuckle.
30
Provide a bird bath, or even a dish kept topped up. Site it away from shrubs where the family cat may hide to observe any birds who visit! You can also place a stone in any water to create a shallow area for bees and other insects to come and safely drink. Remember to refresh the water regularly to reduce any possible disease build up. 3. House your troops Or rather, provide areas in which they can build their own shelters. Old terracotta pots in corners, piles of stones and old logs are all good for shelter, whilst leaves brushed under hedges will create more shelter and hibernation sites, and when the leaves rot down, they will feed your hedges and plants. Clothe your garden in green. Create your own sanctuary for insects, then sit back and listen to the buzz, knowing you are helping the planet.
