A review of the recent Highway Code changes
n Garston, Allerton, City Centre & London
Davidson is a trading name of National Law Partners Limited authorised and regulated by the tion Authority registered in England and Wales under number 08312439.
As of 29 January 2022 significant changes have been made to the Highway Code, the rules for road safety in England, Wales and Scotland. The changes are aimed particularly to protect pedestrians and cyclists and horse riders. The first major change is the introduction of a hierarchy of road users. This does not remove the duty to have regard to the safety of all road users, but places the most vulnerable road users at the top of a hierarchy in the event of a collision. This means motorists now bear the greatest responsibility to reduce the risk that driving their vehicle poses to other road users. Changes have also been made to now require traffic to give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross at a junction. Motorists turning into a road must now give way to anybody who has started to cross the road. One of the more publicised changes is in respect of the road positioning of cyclists. The updated rules have clarified advising cyclists to cycle at least half a metre from the kerb and to position themselves in the middle of their lane on quiet roads or in slow moving traffic. The rules also allow cyclists to cycle two abreast when cycling in groups. Motorists must leave between 1.5 to 2 metres space when overtaking cyclists or horse-riders, depending on the speed they are travelling at. The new rules now allow motorists to cross a double white line in order to allow sufficient clearance, provided of course that it is safe to do so. Sadly, at Gregory Abrams Davidson we frequently act for cyclists injured as a result of motorists travelling too closely to them. Cyclists can now undertake or overtake slower-moving traffic, though it remains important to proceed carefully, particularly when passing large vehicles or when close to junctions. There are also updated rules to make it clear that cyclists must give way to pedestrians crossing a road, in the same way that motorists must now do. At a time when we have seen significant increases on our streets in couriers and delivery drivers on bicycles, these appear to be necessary updates to help ensure the safety of the most vulnerable of road users. Motorists are now required to give priority to people cycling on roundabouts. Motorists should allow cyclists to move across their path and cannot overtake cyclists within their lane. This is welcomed as a very positive clarification of the rules which is likely to offer further protection to cyclists.
The last significant change for motorists and their passengers is the introduction of what is often known as the “Dutch Reach” method of opening doors. This guidance is to open the vehicle door using the hand opposite to the side the door is on. This is considered safer as it requires reaching across, requiring motorists to naturally turn and increase their view of oncoming road users, and especially cyclists who can be catastrophically injured in such accidents. At Gregory Abrams Davidson we regularly act for motorists involved in accidents involving car doors being opened onto oncoming traffic. The “Dutch Reach” has been taught in the Netherlands for over 50 years and is thought to have significantly reduced accidents. Concerns have been expressed that motorists remain unaware of the changes despite the new rules being publicised. This does highlight how important it is that motorists regularly refer back to the Highway Code, and preferably an updated online version. Gregory Abrams Davidson have a specialised team with years of experience in dealing with Road Traffic Accident claims, acting for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists as well as motorists. We are passionate about the work we do, striving to reach the best outcome for each and every client. Our committed and knowledgeable team pride ourselves on excellent client care, recognising the vulnerability of many of our clients. Our solicitors are members of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and Gregory Abrams Davidson was the first member of Accident Line in Liverpool. We offer a free initial consultation and ‘No Win, No Fee’ arrangements in suitable cases.

How to Save on Energy Costs in 2022 It cannot have escaped your attention that our energy bills are set to rise by over 50% this year. A worldwide squeeze on energy supplies has pushed the price of gas up to unprecedented levels. The UK is particularly hard-hit because about 85% of our homes have gas central heating, and gas generates a third of the country’s electricity. In the past, we have always been encouraged to shop around when energy bills rise, but that option is no longer available due to the collapse of so many of the smaller, more competitively priced energy companies. This means we’re having to look for more creative ways to save on our fuel bills, for example by making improvements to the energy efficiency of our homes. Even the smallest of changes – when done consistently - could help offset rising prices and keep your energy bills at more manageable levels. Here are six tips for saving energy at home, courtesy of the Energy Saving Trust. Adopt them all and you could save around £200 to £300 per year on your fuel bills! ■■ Turn off standby appliances at the plug: estimated average saving of £30 a year. Use plug sockets that can be turned on and off via your phone, to make sure you switch unused appliances off. Or you could use cheaper timer plugs to schedule turning appliances on and off.
■■ Install a smart thermostat: estimated average saving of £75 a year. Smart thermostats can make your heating more efficient by only warming the rooms you are using. They work by learning how long it takes to heat your home, so they can have it at the right temperature at exactly the right time. They can also be controlled by your phone, which means you won’t have to come back to a cold home. ■■ Turn down your thermostat: estimated average saving of £80 per year by turning your heating down by just one degree. ■■ Buy energy-efficient appliances: estimated average saving of between £7 to £65 a year. If you need to renew an appliance, choose one with a high energyefficiency rating. ■■ Wash clothes at a lower temperature: estimated average saving of £5 a year just by washing at 30 degrees rather than 40 degrees. ■■ Invest in some draft proofing: estimated average saving £35 a year. Use draught excluders or draught-proofing kits to seal cracks in skirting boards and floors. If you don’t have double glazing then you can buy special plastic lining for your windows.

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: In Celebration Of A Remarkable Lady On 6th February 2022, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years since her accession to the throne. This astonishing achievement makes her the longest reigning living monarch anywhere in the world. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the title was previously held by King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand until his death in 2016. His rule of 70 years 126 days was the second longest reign of a sovereign state in history. The longest-reigning monarch ever was King Louis XIV, who presided over France for 72 years 110 days (14 May 1643- 1 September 1715).
There is a year-long schedule of events to mark the occasion, and we’re all being encouraged to play our part even in a small way. For example there’s The Queen’s Green Canopy project where communities are being helped to “plant a tree for the Jubilee” (www.queensgreencanopy. org). Plus we can buy souvenirs through the official Royal Collection shop (www.royalcollectionshop.co.uk). But all eyes will be on the first weekend of June when the Platinum Jubilee celebrations begin in earnest, with the main events set to take place between Thursday 2nd and Sunday 5th June. We have an additional one-off bank holiday in England on 3rd June with the Spring Bank Holiday (which usually falls in late May) having been moved to 2nd June, creating a four-day weekend. Here’s the order of events for the Platinum Jubilee weekend: Thursday 2nd June - Trooping the Colour from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade, ending with an RAF fly-past, watched by the Queen from the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Members of the public can apply for tickets via the website qbp.army.mod.uk/queensbirthdayparade/. Thursday
6
will also see 1,500 beacons being lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, plus (for the first time) in each of the capital cities of the Commonwealth countries. Friday 3rd June - Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral. Saturday 4th June – Platinum Party at the Palace, a special live concert from Buckingham Palace that will bring together some of the world’s biggest entertainment stars. Members of the public will be invited to apply for tickets, for more information go to www.royal.uk/platinum-jubileecentral-weekend. Sunday 5th June - The Big Jubilee Lunch where local communities are encouraged to come together, celebrate their connections and get to know each other a little bit better. Meanwhile in London the Platinum Jubilee Pageant will involve performers, dancers, musicians, military personnel, key workers and volunteers. Part of this event includes the River of Hope, which will comprise of two hundred silk flags which will process down The Mall, appearing like a moving river. Primary and secondary school children are invited to create a picture of their hopes and aspirations for the planet over the next 70 years. You can register your school’s interest to take part via riverofhope.co.uk. If you’re planning your own local celebrations to mark this momentous event, then the Royal Family has created a wealth of free resources to help via www.royal.uk/resources-platinum-jubilee. local history Scenic Toxteth Park The Cropper family lived at Dingle Bank, a big house overlooking the Mersey estuary’s natural rocky coastline, for a century. Their Toxteth Park estate included The Dingle – named after a deep wooded valley, a natural feature giving the area its name. This ended in a picturesque sandy cove called Knott’s Hole, with spectacular views over the river to the Wirral and Welsh mountains.
by Stephen Guy
“One of these, The Arbour par excellence, faced south so as to catch every ray of sun, while the tide when high rose within a few feet. “It was skilfully lined with split bamboo, fixed in a pleasing pattern on the bank inside. The Arbour was a favourite haunt of lovers. “The walk was uneven, so there were steps at intervals and at one point a bridge of wood spanned a chasm formed by a gash in the sandstone rocks. “The walk was continuous so that one could stroll all round it without turning back.”
The Croppers enjoyed a rustic private walkway around the coastline, featuring a bridge, benches and an arbour, pictured with members of the family (inset).
A rarely-used tunnel led down to the beach, with a slatted door bolted on the inside to keep intruders out. Waves roared up the tunnel in rough weather.
A contemporary account describes how Isabella Cropper, a keen amateur landscape gardener in her 20s, enhanced the walks:
Isabella met a tragic end, as the writer adds: “Before she was 30 she was bitten by a dog which she thought to be mad.
“She undertook to beautify and make available, the already beautiful spot now owned by her family.
“She took a red hot poker and seared the wound and this tragic remedy was followed by a paralytic stroke, of which she died.”
“Along the top of the red sandstone cliffs, she threw a walk railed off from danger, supported by sandstone masonry. “Here and there an arbour with its seat offered repose to the passer-by, with a view of rare beauty before the eye. “Some of these seats were just open benches, others were sheltered from wind and rain, let into a hollow dugout in the bank behind.
Dingle Bank and its lovely coastline were destroyed in the 1920s as Liverpool expanded although parts of the cliffs can still be seen on Riverside Drive. Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, admission free.

Strange Tales
by Anton Valdemart
The Inseparables The two friends worked day and night in their workshop until the strange contraption was finally complete and roadworthy. Mike and Monty decided there would be an unveiling ceremony attended by family and friends. Both pulled the strings and the velvet cloth fell to the ground. “This is the Duocycle,” they announced in unison. Silence filled the workshop quickly broken when Little Simon piped up: “It’ll never work”. The villagers had seen all sorts from penny farthings to three-wheelers but nothing like this. The Duocycle was a sort of tandem but the two riders sat side by side, flanking the two wheels. Both riders had separate handlebars. Mike and Monty demonstrated the efficiency of their machine. After carefully mounting their saddles, they peddled out of the workshop and circled the stable yard several times. Soon they were the talk of the neighbourhood and quickly became known as The Inseparables. “Have you ever seen the like?” said the churchwarden. “Gallivanting hither and thither.”
The accident, as is usually the case, came totally out of the blue. It was a perfect sunny day and they had ventured into new territory, splashing through the pools on Waterloo beach. Heading inland, they approached the level crossing just as the barriers were coming down. Mike and Monty exchanged glances and nodded to each other. They expertly manoeuvred the Duocycle around the moving barriers but then - disaster. They hit the rails and were thrown into the path of the approaching train. Fortunately, the crossing keeper dragged The Inseparables to safety just as the Duocycle was crushed under the wheels of the locomotive. They caught the next train home - carrying their wrecked machine between them. Mike and Monty were not totally surprised to receive a summons from the magistrates for breaking level crossing regulations. “You are lucky to be alive and no-one else was hurt,” said the chairman from his lofty bench before conferring with his two colleagues.
“They trundled up behind me in the lane the other day,” complained Mrs Mortis the undertaker. “I told them to get a bell or at least shout.”
“We are going to make an example of you two - with an unusual punishment,” he told The Inseparables.
The Inseparables cut a dash wherever they went, wearing similar cycling suits.
Mike and Monty were allowed to return to their saddles but there was no more Duocycle.
Maude and Maisie wanted to have a go on the Duocycle but were firmly refused because they did not have the right clothing.
They were ordered to go to the cycle shop and buy unicycles.
They were shocked when told: “Get some of those cycling bloomers”.
14
The Inseparables tested their machine on all types of roads, from high streets to leafy byways. They even went off-road, plunging through mud or crunching along gravelly bridlepaths.
Each perched on his one-wheeled machine, they again received widespread attention - as The Separates. Read my next Strange Tale in The Link: Coming Home at Last.

Spring Clean Your Garden Ready for Summer With the weather warming up, now is the perfect time to get your garden or outside space spruced up and ready for summer, especially if you haven’t ventured out much over the winter! Between March and April is the perfect time to begin Spring gardening and to slowly awaken your plot from its winter slumber. 1. Clean up the winter debris Collect any dead leaves, stalks and fallen tree branches. These need to be cleared away as they can harbour diseases and allow bacteria to develop and infect your plants. Your clean up could also include your hard landscaping e.g. paths, patio or deck. A good sweep up and clean with plenty of water should do the trick, but if you use cleaning products, make sure you protect your plants first. 2. Revive your lawn Feed and rake your lawn and scarify the grass. This will ensure all debris and dead grass cuttings are removed, allowing it to breathe and not become waterlogged. You can also use this time to level off any uneven areas and add new grass seed, to give your lawn a bit of a facelift.
3. Spruce up the vegetable garden If you grow your own, now is the time to order your seeds, and some vegetables can now be sown undercover. If you have a greenhouse or ample windowsill, you can start preparing your containers for propagating by thoroughly cleaning up any old pots and seed trays. 4. Trim the bedding plants By now, many of your plants could do with a little attention to get them ready for spring. This might involve re-potting, moving them to a more protected area of the garden or trimming the stems to encourage new growth. 5. Weed your flower beds and prepare the soil As part of your soil preparation, you should remove as many weeds as you can, using either a weedkiller or by hand. Rake over your soil to maintain airflow, and if necessary add some topsoil to ensure that when you eventually add new plants they get the best start possible. 6. Smarten up your garden furniture Whether made of plastic, wood or wicker, your garden furniture is going to need a bit of TLC. Plastic is pretty easy to revive with some warm soapy water and a sponge. Anything made of timber could need a bit more help. Start with a simple clean and then use the appropriate wood oil to seal it and protect it from the elements.

Hi guys and welcome to my April/May issue of ‘Life ‘n’ Style‘! This is my favourite time of the year. The nights are starting to become lighter, the temperature is warming up and everyone seems that little bit happier enjoying the weather. I’m quite lucky that I can work from home most of the time and there’s nothing better than sitting in the garden on my rattan garden set under the umbrella with a little breeze coming through while I drink my fruit infusion water.
Well, if you like the sound of that then your luck is in! I have a £50 off discount code that you can all use against any rattan furniture exclusive to all my LINK readers. Take a look at www.houseofglitzandglamour.co.uk and see if there is anything that takes your fancy. Simply enter LINK50 at the checkout to receive the discount.
There’s so much to choose from you will be spoilt for choice. I’ve also managed to get a free outside rug included for you all as well. Once you place your order, you will be contacted to choose which rug style you prefer. Give House Of Glitz And Glamour a follow on Instagram and sign up to the newsletter to be kept up to date with all their offers and new products. In other news, I always get so many messages across my social media platforms asking what tan I use. Well, I used to be a big lover of the sunbeds back in the day but as I’ve gotten older I’ve started to look after my skin a lot more. I’m currently using the Medki8 products and some contain retinol so I’m currently looking like Casper so need to tan a little more lately. I use the Ambre Solaire spray in a medium colour on my face and Cocoa Brown Perfect Fade Oil in medium on my body. I’ve literally tried and tested every tan out there and this is the best combination. If you’re looking for a new daytime foundation or tinted moisturiser I go between the Mac Studio Face And Body (C4) and the Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser (St Moritz). I find most foundations too heavy for a day time but both of these are hydrating yet nice and light and you can build up coverage the more you apply. Till next time… love Jade Mwahhhhh xx Enquires Jade@jadeainsworthgossip.co.uk

Let’s Be-Gin Chatsworth is high on the ‘to do’ list when visiting country houses in England. Renowned as being one of the finest country estates to visit in the UK, Chatsworth House, with its 105-acre garden attracts many visitors, from global origins, throughout the year. Chatsworth House is the seat of the Duke of Devonshire and this stately residence has been home to the Cavendish family since 1549. Located on the east bank of the River Derwent, in Derbyshire’s Peak District, close to Chesterfield and Bakewell, the magnificent property is surrounded by stunning views and countryside. Located on the Chatsworth Estate, award-winning Peak Ales Brewery produces real ales and gained much interest from the outset. The craft ales’ producer also offers Chatsworth Gin (40% vol). Following several years of experimenting and development, this small-batch gin utilises selected botanicals, from the Chatsworth Estate, to produce this high-quality, classic, London Dry Gin. Botanicals used include Chatsworth lemons, lemongrass, lemon verbena, plus banana leaf. The banana has an important and very interesting role at Chatsworth and the Cavendish banana is well documented in Chatsworth’s history. During the 1830s, Joseph Paxton was head gardener to the 6th Duke of Devonshire and introduced bananas to Chatsworth.

The team play in the prestigious Junior Premier League and are in line to win their division if they continue their form you the end of the season.
South Liverpool’s hard-fought 1-0 win over play-off contenders Golcar United, with a first half goal from leading scorer Owen Hough, ensured that the team cannot finish in the bottom three of the North West Counties League first division north. A difficult run of fixtures before and after Christmas had caused the team to move dangerously close to the drop zone. However, a run of four wins in five matches moved the team into 10th and
they have not dropped from there ever since. Significantly, most of those wins were against relegation rivals. The team have tightened up their defence and conceding less goals has had a massive effect on the team’s fortunes. Both league cup competitions have now started which has given all clubs a chance of silverware at the end of the season. A special mention must go to the club’s under 16s who are unbeaten in 15 games and recently defeated one of

dog of the month NAME: Defa BREED: Crossbreed AGE: 7 Defa was first at Dogs Trust 8 years ago when he was a pup. He’s grown into a very handsome chap who is still active and loves his walks on the beach. He really enjoys exploring new places and is happy being made a fuss of and will lean into you for maximum coverage! Defa will be perfectly happy as the only dog at home as he does seem to become a little stressed around other dogs. We have it on good authority that he does chase cats, so no felines, please. He’s very friendly in general and should be fine with children aged 8 and over. He is house trained but may need a refresher whilst he settles into a new routine. Defa is happy to get in the car and can be left home alone for a couple of hours once settled. Due to his age, Defa has a little arthritis that he requires ongoing pain relief for. If you think Defa could be for you, find out more by visiting Dogs Trust Merseyside’s page at www.dogstrust.org.uk. You can also follow the doggy ‘tails’ on Twitter @DT_Merseyside and Instagram, @dogstrust_merseyside
