FRUIT & VEGETABLES By Stephen Guy

IN GEORGIAN and Victorian times many big houses had walled gardens for growing fruit and vegetables under glass as well as in the open. his self sufficiency re uired gardening staff but often the house owners would take an active part in growing and harvesting. Reynolds Park and Calderstones have walled gardens and there are several others in the Liverpool area. Many more have been destroyed with passing time and the continual demand for land to build new developments. Olive Mount in Wavertree has a particular link with one type of fruit – oranges. Valencia Road is named after the grand family home of fruit merchant William McGeorge. He made a very comfortable living importing the luscious fruit from Valencia in Spain. Originally called Hill House, William re-named it Valencia House about 1908.

It is not known if he grew oranges in his garden but other exotic fruit was cultivated along with vegetables. There was a 40ft long greenhouse, an orchard growing both apples and pears plus a

chicken run and rabbit hut. Rabbits were kept as a cheap source of meat. Blackberry and raspberry bushes provided late summer and autumn fruits for pies and ams. reen figs were grown in a sheltered corner. Valencia House was pulled down around 1927 after it had been divided into three for some years. The mansion, with soaring chimneys and full-length windows, stood at the junction of Victoria Park’s North Drive and Mill Lane. A tinted postcard (pictured) from about this time shows the view looking north. All that remains is the stone wall – the house and outbuildings in the picture were demolished long ago. Valencia House stood to the left just out of view. Mill Lane was straightened

so the original bend in the road is now called Old Mill Lane. Grade II-listed Olive Mount mansion, part of the hospital, dates from the late 18th century. In Edwardian times this was the site of Olive Mount Cottage Homes. Set in 49 acres of grounds, there were 16 cottage homes run by foster mothers. The complex was designed for the residential education of healthy children although most only stayed for a short period. It closed as a children’s home in 1955 before linking up with Alder Hey to become a hospital. n Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10am to 5pm every day, admission free.

Have you seen these plants? ON Saturday 28th October, Childwall in Bloom spent several hours at Childwall Triangle (Taggart Avenue) and Woolton Road filling planters and tubs with plants to bring some colour and cheer to the area during the winter months. Within hours of them completing the planting a person or persons unknown visited the planters and stole several ornamental grasses and some polyanthus. The ornamental grasses, which are called libertia, are quite rare and have been in the planters around Childwall Triangle for several years. These plants are funded by the local community, through their donations to

Childwall in Bloom, and they should be in the planters for the benefit of the community. If you know anything about the whereabouts of these plants please kindly inform your local PCSOs or get in touch with Childwall in Bloom at childwallinbloom@ googlemail.com.

Her hand on my shoulder Strange Tale – By Anton Valdemart MILLIE was always her favourite grandchild, with jet black hair and a carefree personality, but the giant snowman ended it all – or did it? Mrs Crabtree loved her family and saw them frequently. here were fi e surviving children and 16 grandchildren living within walking distance of her cottage by the LeedsLiverpool Canal. She had been entranced since first setting eyes

on Millie as a new-born wrapped snug and warm in the old wooden cradle by the fireside. Mrs Crabtree gently rocked the cradle as Millie snoozed. Soon Millie was giving the sweetest smile and within no time was running around the room. There was never a tantrum, never a cross word – everyone loved her. Millie would sit on grandma’s knee and listen to stories handed down over generations. She was not frightened of

ghost stories and expressed the strange notion that she would not mind being a ghost. “I will stay close to you grandma – you will know from my touch,” she said enigmatically. Millie grew into a strong, athletic girl who liked to help gather crops in the fields. She passed a scholarship to Queen Matilda’s Grammar School, just a mile’s walk away. In the summer Millie would stride to and from

home in her gymslip, singing happy songs. In winter she donned an overcoat handed down from her elder sister. She was impulsive, sometimes rushing out into the night to check the hens or watch barn owls swooping over the stubble. It was just after Millie’s 14th birthday when the blizzard struck. Christmas was coming and the goose was getting fat. The snow was so bad the village and surrounding farms were cut off for several days. Millie decided she would build the biggest snowman in the world. She was used to building huge haystacks and this would be easy by comparison. The others stayed inside but would look over to Parson’s Meadow once in a while to watch the snowman growing. Millie grew very hot and threw off her coat to stay cool. The snowman was so big she had to climb a ladder to put his head on. The snowman stood 12 ft tall and was admired by all. That night a strong wind blew up from the south. The windows rattled and the trees creaked. Millie must have got up in the night, concerned about her snowman. The following morning Jethro the reaper found the snowman reduced to a huge pile of tumbled snow. Two legs stuck out from the pile. Grim-faced Jethro shouted for help and soon Millie’s lifeless body was

revealed, a smile on her frozen lips. The winter melted into spring and Mrs Crabtree was sat in the sun, her face glowing with fond memories of Millie.

Then she heard an unmistakable voice followed by a soft touch. “I felt her hand on my shoulder,” said Mrs Crabtree to Millie’s mum. “I know she is happy.”

Stations set to be awarded highest civic honour

Following the council meeting, separate ceremonies to confer the honours will be held next year. Volvo V60 is a hit with all the family By Tim Saunders

“I DELIVERED one of these the other day and the chap didn’t want to drive it,” says the delivery driver. “Oh,” I reply, a little perplexed, admiring the finish of this particular model. ouldn t he dri e I ask. e ust sat and listened to the stereo.” eally as he all there uestion. “He worked for one of the hi fi maga ines and he was testing the sound system, an added extra in the top of the range model. I stayed with him on his dri eway for minutes and he really cran ed up the olume. “I better pay a bit more attention to stereos from now on then” I replied. y first impression is that this V60 stands taller than the standard model thanks to its raised height. The fact that it is an all-wheel drive model not only makes it super safe on the roads but it also means that it is at home in the countryside. hat better place to test this out than a tre down the motorway to the market town of Andover. Traditionally, Volvos have been associated with manufacturing standard road going cars that are supremely safe. I can see why they have entured into the all wheel dri e mar et though weden in winter is undoubtedly a treacherous place to dri e.

hat really appeals about a four wheel dri e ol o is that it is e tra safe because all wheels are talking to each other so to speak. This is a permanent thing so there’s no need to faff about engaging it. or an impatient soul such as me this is great news because it means that one moment I can be driving on a country lane and the ne t minute pottering through open farmland without a care in the world. It’s an extremely competent vehicle and it is only se ere ruts in the land that alerts passengers to the fact that they are off-roading. ust you do this uestions my long suffering wife as our three children Harriett (6), Heidi (4) and enry months do e in the rear. They barely bat an eyelid as the ehicle uite happily travels across the farmland. It hasn’t been raining for a couple of wee s so the ground is pretty dry so there’s no boggy challenges to encounter more s the pity but suspect it would ta e such situations in its stride. eing a ol o it is fitted with intelligent cruise control

that reads the traffic ahead and reacts accordingly in terms of speed by automatically bra ing or accelerating. hen re ersing the wing mirrors automatically drop so that the driver can clearly see the sides of the road behind. There is also a useful re ersing camera that appears in the centre console as you can see in the ideo at www.testdri es.bi . However, this system is not infallible and the driver needs to be extremely alert, especially when reversing on my driveway. Overall, I do like this ol o and feel uite at home behind the wheel. The children like it too and that’s important for a family vehicle. Stay fit over the festive period CHRISTMAS is almost upon us and it’s certainly a time when we begin to slow down, take it easy and potentially over-indulge in foods we don’t normally eat. Also over this period we have a break from our routines and we’re probably not as active as we normally are However, we don’t have to turn into couch potatoes at Christmas and here are a few tips on how we can stay fit o er the festi e period n Tuck in to turkey - you don’t have to wait until Christmas Day for turkey. Turkey is a great lean protein and is also full of vitamins and minerals n Don’t swerve the sprouts personally, I like sprouts. They are high in Vitamin C which helps to boost the immune system. n Don’t skip meals - sometimes people will skip meals as they are over-indulging in other things

like sweets, chocolate, cheese and crackers etc. Try and stick to your regular pattern of breakfast, lunch, tea, and therefore you’ll be less inclined to snack. n Be active – you should still perform your fitness routine whenever possible and if you can’t do that, try and go for walks or bike rides. Christmas can be a great time to get out in the countryside n Get out of the house – make the festive period a family affair; go out together and visit somewhere n Set realistic goals – we’ll all probably put a bit of weight on over Christmas, and if you do then don’t beat yourself up about it. Try and set a realistic goal each day, say half-anhour doing an activity n Drink water – stay hydrated and don t ma e alcohol your main uid source over Christmas n Eat less and more often – distribute your meals evenly

They have spent all their time in foster care but with so many other animals they haven’t had much attention so are very shy to begin with. Rain stops play for Alder FC By Peter Harrison

IN A frustrating month, matches have been stop-start due to rain and waterlogged pitches. he home fi ture against Alumini commenced against a backdrop of cloud and sunshine. However, as soon as the game commenced, torrential driving rain saw the match abandoned, a rare occurrence, after approximately 60 minutes, with the ball sticking on the pitch and health and safety becoming paramount.

Pictured is Callum our aspiring goalkeeper. The one league fi ture completed saw a comprehensive 5-1 victory against Woolton MSB.

The team raced into a 5-0 lead with regular marksmen Peter Moore and Kyle Mulby among the goals. This win consolidates their league position in the top half of the table, which has been a great start in their first season in the remier Division. A further compliment for the team has been the selection of goalkeeper Callum for the league’s representative team. Callum played in the team s first ictory and will be travelling to the Isle of an for their ne t fi ture.

Stoneycroft FC round-up By Mick Titherington JK HITS THE JACKPOT WITH 3 x 7s AS CROFT HIT TOP SPOT The goal machine otherwise known as James Kennedy hit another seven against the luckless Northern in an 11goal rout. This was the third seven JK has scored this season to break what must be some sort of record. The victory followed a 6-0 thrashing of Liverpool Hibernia and in the most recent fi ture roft came bac from a two goal deficit to beat close rivals AFC Kirkby 5-3 at Windy Arbour to consolidate their position at the top of the table. Others on the score sheet on the march up the table include Alex Kelly with a hat-trick, Joe Daley, Ben Williams, Tomas Stewart and Luke Daley. On this form only a fool would back against them becoming champions, but there is no room for complacency. Next up they will be looking forward to progressing in the cup as they face Norris Green Baptists.

South open up gap at top of the table By Jim Stanway

James Kennedy CROFT UNDER-17s SECURE THEIR PLACE AS LEAGUE LEADERS With a display of scintillating football giving reason to the description of ‘the beautiful game’, Croft under-17s emulated their open age counterparts by topping the table with back to back victories. They remain unbeaten in the league so far and their performances will make it

hard for others to catch them. This league is one of the most competitive around so no slip ups can be tolerated but they have established themselves as the team to beat. Their crisp, short, sharp passing game is a delight to see and with their own ace marksman Lewis Wilkinson in clinical form they look almost unstoppable. Long may it continue!

ALTHOUGH South Liverpool FC have suffered another cup defeat, they now have a healthy lead at the top of the West Cheshire League Division One. Dreams of retaining the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup were dashed by a surprise 3-1 defeat at Custys from the Liverpool County Premier League Premier Division. An equaliser by Cameron Dalton just before half-time did not inspire a productive second half and, after South hit the crossbar in the last minute, the opposition then clinched victory with the last kick of the match. Things look much brighter in the league though with two healthy wins, 6-1 at

Chester Nomads with a hattrick from Cameron Dalton and two from Mason Nevitt and a 5-3 home win over the same opposition with two goals each from Alex Woodcock and Cameron Dalton, with all four of these goals coming in a nineminute spell in the second half. That win resulted in a seven-point lead at the top of the table and the forthcoming clash at nearest rivals Vauxhall Motors, with both teams still unbeaten, promises to be a mouthwatering occasion. The reserves suffered a penalty shoot-out defeat for the second time this season and for the third successive season in the Liverpool County FA Junior Cup.

Mixed Cup results for Liverpool Sefton By Chris Thomas

THE beginning of the long road to the finals of the ngland Hockey national competitions saw three Sefton teams playing twice in a weekend. Liverpool College hosted both first team matches. he ladies were up first with a game against league rivals Fylde. A toughly contested game ended two goals each, with the game being decided on penalty strokes. It wasn’t to be Sefton’s day, with the opposition goalkeeper saving three penalty strokes. Although a disappointing result, the team are now able to concentrate on the league and indoor hockey. Over at Formby, the ladies’ second team also played off

against league rivals. This game also ended in a 2-2 draw, but on this occasion it was Liverpool Sefton who

triumphed on penalties to march on to the next round. The second game of the day at the College saw the men’s

first team ta e on eston who play in the league above. A ferocious start to the game saw Sefton get themselves into a well-deserved two-goal lead. Excellent saves from both goalkeepers meant that no further goals were scored in the first half. nother e cellent performance in the second half saw Sefton add three goals on to the total and a consolation goal from Neston didn’t take the shine off a well-earned 5-1 victory. A fantastic performance from all the players and a special mention should go to club chairman Chris Thomas who, making a rare appearance on the pitch, was unluckily denied a goal in the final minute by some top class goalkeeping by the Neston goalkeeper.

The third round loss at Aintree Villa, after a 2-2 draw with two goals from leading scorer David Mee, was by the agonising scoreline of 9-8 in the penalty shoot-out and the two goal eepers final penalties were the deciding factor. The youth team retain a healthy lead at the top of the West Cheshire League Youth Division despite two recent postponements. The team progressed to the uarter finals of the Liverpool County FA Youth Cup with a high-scoring 8-4 win over Birkdale United with two goals each from Rob Lewis, Michael Kielty and Liam Murphy and one each from Jack Riding and Jamie Cassidy.
