PUTTING ON THE STILE By Stephen Guy

THOUSANDS of paths and public rights of way – some of them very ancient – criss-cross the countryside and urban areas. Stiles evolved over centuries so that people could get on to land while ensuring livestock, including sheep and cows, could not get out. The Agricultural Revolution saw the enclosure of common land and the growth of modern farming techniques. More enclosed fields meant more stiles because most people walked everywhere. Stiles also deterred horse riders entering footpaths, churning up the ground. Horses are generally restricted to bridle paths sometimes entered through gates. Literature has many references to stiles, from The Pilgrim’s Progress to Harry Potter, and some consider them a quintessential feature of the English countryside. Journeys on foot and climbing stiles have been seen by writers as

symbolising periods of our lives when we face hazards or make new discoveries. Stiles are most often wooden, metal or stone steps over walls or through gaps in hedges. Modern metal squeezer stiles can be seen around Liverpool’s parks and open spaces. Kissing gates, types of open turnstiles, allow two people to pass through one after the other. The romantically-named gate, in a U-shaped enclosure, is waist high giving couples the opportunity to kiss as they pass. Turnstiles are mostly associated with football and sports grounds but can also be used as alternatives to conventional stiles. Just one person can pass through at a time, making crowd management much easier. Turnstiles also have the advantage of being lockable, rendering them impossible to use. LEAFLET - FLYER DELIVERY 1884 to open a new public facility. The 30-acre cemetery had been opened in 1856 when it was in relatively open country. However, new housing development meant access was needed from Arundel Avenue. Residents did not want hearses trundling past their upmarket homes so the new entrance was for pedestrians only. People went through one of two high metal turnstiles set in an ornate stone porch

(pictured), thus ensuring visitors came and went in an orderly fashion. A similar turnstile can be seen at the entrance to Croxteth Country Park in West Derby Village. There is another next to a lodge giving access to Lord Derby’s coach road on the East Lancashire Road. ■ Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10am to 5pm every day, admission free.

Reader Maureen shares her South Liverpool memories AS our regular readers will know, our back page features a monthly article by Jim Stanway about South Liverpool FC and this led to us receiving a lovely letter from LINK reader Maureen Cunningham. Maureen wrote: “Every time I read your newspaper and see the stories of South Liverpool football team I think of my husband Ken. He played for South Liverpool in the early 1950’s and was a centrehalf affectionately known as “Big ‘Ead” as he was a great header of the ball and could put it anywhere he said it would go. The crowd used to shout: “Give it to Big ‘Ead”! He played for the team for quite a few years and was well-known and liked by the fans. I have a cartoon picture of the team at that time (1953). Ken died nine years ago, aged 79, but maybe some of the other players are still alive or the cartoon may be of interest to their children and grandchildren”. Unfortunately, due to the size of the cartoon and space limitations in

the current edition, we are unable to reproduce the cartoon in the LINK but Maureen is pictured holding the cartoon and, with Maureen’s permission, a copy will soon be uploaded both onto our own website

(www.liverpoollink.co.uk) and onto South Liverpool FC’s website (www. southliverpoolfc.com). The players featured in the cartoon are: Ken Cunningham, Harry Boydell, Teddy Edmondson, Arthur

Edwards, Ronnie Edwards, Fred Finney, Arthur Franks, Eric Hornby, Bobby Loftus, Eddie Pauline and Harry Wood. Club officials ‘Mr Duckett’ and ‘Mr J W Wells’ are also included. South Liverpool FC treasurer and archivist Malcolm Flanagan told the LINK: ‘Ken Cunningham played 63 first-team games for ‘South’ between 1951 and 1954, scoring one goal. He made 44 appearances in the 1952-53 season, which was our first season back in the Lancashire Combination, and scored his only goal in our 9-0 home win over Cromptons Recs on 25 April 1953. It is therefore almost certain that he will have played for South in the game which remains our highest-ever victory, a 13-1 win against Barnoldswick on 30 April 1953. We have no record of an Arthur Edwards playing for us at that time although there was a player called Arthur Lewis during the season in question’. Thanks for contacting us, Maureen, it was lovely to hear from you.

Dog of the month – Dobbie DOBBIE had people believing he was a shy boy but a recent day out at the Cheshire Show with him proved him to be quite the opposite! He was a huge hit with the crowds and entertained people by playing with their dogs as they stopped to say hello to him, but sadly he is still waiting for his forever home. Dobbie could certainly live with another dog, and the team believe doing so would help keep his confidence up and really let his personality shine through.

His background is unknown but having seen how wonderfully behaved he is, he would thrive in a family home with sensible children aged 10 and above. If you think Dobbie could be your four-legged friend, you can visit Dogs Trust Merseyside on Whiston Lane, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 6HP. Open 12pm-4pm every day except Wednesdays, when it is closed. You can also call on 0300 303 0292, 8am-8pm Mon-Fri and 9am-5pm Sat and Sun.

Thank you Aigburth, Allerton and Garston #STEMCELLSCOUSERS want to say a massive thanks to all the customers and staff at ALDI St.

Mary’s Road for their fantastic generosity in donating a huge £691 to dkms.org.uk.

Every year around 2,000 blood cancer patients in the UK need a stemcell transplant to survive but sadly only half manage to find one. #STEMCELLSCOUSERS was formed two years ago by brothers Kevin and Tony Dunne, who hail from Grassendale, and step-mum Margaret Dunne and Brian Jones, who live in Garston, after Tony was diagnosed with a very rare blood disorder called Severe Aplastic Anaemia which is when the bone marrow stops making blood cells. Tony was told he needed a stemcell transplant to survive. He was one of the lucky ones and is now doing really well. In just two years #STEMCELLSCOUSERS have raised over £23,000 for the Anthony Nolan, DKMS and Royal Liverpool Hospital charities. Kevin is appealing for more volunteers and if you would like to assist then please email him on kevindunne2@googlemail.com

The face at the window Strange Tale – By Anton Valdemart

IVY-COVERED Maltravers Hall overlooked The Deep, that forbidding stretch of the Mersey estuary between south Liverpool and the Wirral. The 19th century merchant’s mansion nestled in Otterspool woodland some distance from its neighbours. Oliver Birtwhistle loved to play among the beech trees and gloomy thickets leading gently to the shore. His favourite tree was a big holm oak overlooking a shallow stream. The boy was fascinated by this evergreen which never seemed to change throughout the seasons. The house and garden, like the oak, had changed little over the decades since Oliver’s grandfather built the house. Now Edwardian summers cast dappled sunshine over the lawns and coppices, creating a wonderful playground for Oliver and his friends. Mother and father did not really approve

of the Fulbright twins because of their pushy parents but Oliver liked them so that was enough. The tomboys liked to climb trees with him. Then there was Jack Simmons who was never allowed into the Hall. He lived with his fisherman father in a hut by the shore – and smelt of fish. Oliver’s parents were very hands-on with the upbringing of their only child: they had just two helpers, a live-in cook and maid. The day’s games were invariably interrupted by mother’s familiar call: “Oliver, your tea’s ready” wafting over the lawn and into the woods. Oliver was soon at the table demolishing a roast dinner but, as usual, he irritatingly left his vegetables. Later his parents had a confidential discussion. “I saw her again last night,” said mother. “She looked just as she did.” “You must have been seeing things,” said father. “Aunt Clare has been dead more than 20 years. I don’t believe in ghosts.” Mother pulled a face: “She was dressed in her nun’s habit and looked so … alive.” She paused then added: “You remember I saw her just after Oliver was born. Why has she returned?” “I’ve never seen her,” snorted father as he lit his pipe and opened the newspaper. One sunny afternoon Oliver was stretched on the lawn when he glanced over to the tall windows set among terracotta bricks. A woman with an ashen face was looking at him from one of the windows. Her big, mournful eyes showed affection and warmth although there was something unearthly about her appearance. Oliver smiled and waved at the woman as she slowly moved from the window. He asked his parents who the strange lady was. Mother pretended it was a visitor: she was secretly relieved Oliver had seen the figure. “Auntie was always one for children eating up all their food,” mother fondly recalled to father later. Next day Oliver heard his mother’s familiar cry: “Your tea’s ready”. He ran across the lawn but stopped in his tracks when he saw the ghostly lady at the window. Her previously serene face was now twisted into a horrible grimace as she hissed: “Eat up all your greens or else!”

Homemade doughnuts with strawberry compote recipe from a French chef JUST looking at the picture of these doughnuts made our mouths water, so we had to share it. We also think it is a great one to keep the kids quiet during the school holidays. Straight from the kitchen of our hosts Freya and Chef Maynard at their gourmet cookery school in the heart of the Loire Valley, this dessert recipe is professionally made but still easy to follow. What you will need (serves eight): 225g strong bread flour 30g caster sugar 8g dried yeast 50ml full fat milk 85g softened butter Two whole eggs Two large punnets of strawberries (plus sugar to taste) How to create the perfect doughnut 1. Using a mixer with a paddle, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Or you can do it by hand with a wooden spoon. Add the eggs and mix for another two minutes. 2. Add the milk, incorporate, then add the flour and yeast and mix until all ingredients are incorporated. Continue to work the

mixture for another three minutes. Cover the bowl with a clean damp tea-towel and leave in a warm place to prove until it has doubled in size. 3. Transfer the dough from the bowl onto a floured surface and roll it out to about 1.5cm thick. Using approximately a 7cm round cutter cut out circles from the dough, then using a 2cm round cutter cut the hole out of the centre. The mixture that is left over can then be reshaped into another doughnut. 4. Leave the dough to prove again until it has doubled in size, then deep-fry at 170° until golden brown, you need to turn them over half-way through the cooking. Remove from oil then toss them in a bowl of caster sugar until well coated. They are ready to serve. 5. Serve them warm, with a strawberry compote and clotted cream ice cream. To make the compote cut the strawberries in half removing the green stalk, then gently heat in a saucepan with a sprinkling of sugar to taste, until the sugar is dissolved. Serving suggestions The batter can be made the day before and kept in the fridge in an airtight container, but the doughnuts are best made just before you want to eat them.

Weight loss and metabolism EVERY now and again, I come across someone who says they can’t lose weight because they have a slow metabolism. Some people can have a medical condition that can effect metabolism but otherwise the majority of factors are controlled by ourselves Here are some tips on how to speed up your metabolism: n Increase activity: If you’ve hit a plateau on your weight loss, no need to decrease your calories. Try

and increase your activity instead. Try to add in some weight training sessions or resistance work n Eat more protein: When you take in more protein, your body has got to work harder to break it down, therefore burning more calories in the process. In fact, protein burns more calories through the digestive process, more than any other food. n Have a good breakfast: I still come across people who don’t have any breakfast or will only have a small breakfast. A big thank you to Moira at The Link AS a registered charity that supports disabled people, we at Leonard Cheshire Disability are always looking for volunteers and ways of recruiting them, so when we were offered support by Moira by way of a bit of free space for our appeal in the LINK we were very pleased to say the least. The advert was a great

success and we had a number of enquiries, some of whom are going on to become volunteers with us. We have had free press space in the past but this one in the LINK has been by far the most successful and will benefit the people we support in so many ways. So thank you Moira for helping us reach so many

people. Regards, John and everyone at the Orchard John Jones (Volunteer Coordinator), The Orchard, Leonard Cheshire Disability Telephone: 0151 421 2705: Mobile 07793 803659: Email john.jones@ leonardcheshire.org

metabolism will slow right down. n Drink plenty of water: Increasing your water intake can also contribute towards a faster metabolism. n Try and get plenty of sleep: When you are sleeping, your body repairs itself. Aim for between six and eight hours per night. Can I help you out with anything? Weight loss, building muscle or any ideas on what you would like me to write about in next month’s article. If so, please let me know.

Losing Daisy has left a hole in my heart LIFE ‘n’ STYLE

– with JADE AINSWORTH

www.jadeainsworth gossip.co.uk

Hi Guys and welcome to the September issue of my Life ‘n‘ Style column. Since my last piece I have been totally devastated. I had to get my gorgeous Daisy put to sleep. It’s been four weeks of torture and if anybody reading this knows me you will know how much she meant to me. She brought me eight-and-a-half years of happiness and a huge hole has been left in my heart and household. If you want to read the full story of what happened then check out my blog www. jadeainsworthgossip.co.uk On a lighter note I hope you have all had a wonderful summer and enjoyed the kids being off school. I’m off to Majorca next week as my daughter (Jaz) is in a girl band called ‘Girl Talk‘ and they are performing at a major event in Palma so I’m looking forward to a few little days in the sun and some time to unwind.

As the summer months close in everybody is feeling the stress of dehydration and trauma left on their skin so I’m letting you all in on two fabulous products from Clinique. ‘Take The Day Off’ Cleansing Balm (£23) is a lightweight cleansing balm that quickly dissolves stubborn eye and face makeup and transforms from a solid balm to a silky fluid oil. It thoroughly cleans your skin and doesn’t leave any dryness. After using the cleansing balm I have started to use ‘Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+’ (£30). This is a really nice lightweight, easily absorbed lotion that replenishes lost moisture and strengthens the skin. It doesn’t feel too heavy or leave a residue on your skin so your makeup can easily be applied after it. I have only been using these two products

Sometimes, each of us, or someone we care about, needs support at home. Family owned, family run local business. We provide personalised, bespoke care packages which we create with you to ensure we deliver the service you require. Please call to see if we can help support you, at home.

for just over a week now and not only does my skin feel so nice but people have noticed and been giving me lots of compliments. If you are looking to change your skin care regime or looking for a nice gift for a birthday present then I would thoroughly recommend giving either of these two products. I get asked all the time what face makeup I wear, with many people emailing and inboxing on social media asking what products are best. I would probably say over the past few years I have tried and tested almost

everything but I suppose it all depends on what I’m doing and where I am going. If I’m just out and about or going to work then I always wear MAC Studio Face & Body. It comes in two sizes – a 50ml and a 120ml (£23.50/£29.50). I use the colour C5 in both summer and winter as it easily blends. It has a lovely satin finish and a sheer coverage so it doesn’t look too heavy and is so easy to apply. Of an evening or if I’m going out I use Chanel Vitalumiere Fluid Foundation (£37). I tend to use the colour Beige in the winter or Hale in the summer or mix them both every now and then. This is perfect if you need something that stays on but also doesn’t dry your skin out. It’s a really creamy foundation that doesn’t sink into your lines or clog your pores and gives a flawless finish. This is great for all ages and my mum, my nan and I all wear it. A really nice concealer for under your eyes is the Airbrush Concealer by Clinique (£20.00). This is perfect for softening any shadows and lines and has a fast brush application. I have tried most concealers on the market and I always find they look lovely upon applying but as the day (or night) goes on you start to see a lot of dehydration and lines that you don’t seem to have normally start appearing but this doesn’t do any of that and is really nice – I wouldn’t use anything else!

SOUTH Liverpool FC opened the new season with an emphatic 5-2 away win against Birkenhead side Mallaby and ended up top of the table after one game! Two goals from the returning Cameron Dalton, one from last season’s leading scorer Alex Woodcock, one from Niall McHale on his debut plus an own goal saw off a much-changed Mallaby outfit and gave the team a boost with a tough start to the league campaign and fixtures against last season’s champions, runners-up and league cup winners in the first six matches. South had finished their pre-season schedule with three wins and three defeats from seven matches played; highlights being a 2-0 win over Gresford Athletic, third-placed in Wales’ second tier league the Cymru Alliance, and two massive wins over Liverpool County Premier League outfits BRNESC and Woolton. The reserves had an unbeaten pre-season including a great 6-2 win over Cheshire League side Windle Labour and a 2-2 draw against Liverpool County Premier League Premier Division side South Sefton Borough. Their season proper started with a brilliant 3-1 win at Prescot Cables Reserves despite having to play the final hour with only nine men. A first half screamer from Neil Roach and two goals from last season’s leading scorer David Mee put three points on the board.

Alex Woodcock, last year’s top scorer, surrounded by Mallaby defenders in our opening day win. South’s first team will be representing Liverpool County FA in the Northern Counties Championship after last season’s successful defence of the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup. They have been drawn at home to Westmoreland FA in the preliminary round and the game will be staged at Walton Hall Park on a Saturday in October. The youth team are still in pre-season and will be defending their West Cheshire League Youth Division title and entering the Liverpool Business Houses Youth Division.

New season begins with return of tournament

By Chris Thomas

The first weekend in August saw the return of the Bill Chambers 7’s tournament. When the long serving chairman stood down in 2016 Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club thought long and hard about a fitting tribute to celebrate Bill’s hard work and landed on the idea of hosting a tournament in his name. Over 40 players participated this year, making up five teams that competed in a round robin competition. After every team had played each other the top two teams faced off in a winner takes all game for the trophy. Fate would have it that this left current chairman Chris Thomas playing off against old chairman, and now President, Bill Chambers for the coveted prize. This was a hard fought game, with standard of play no doubt influenced by the pizza that had been consumed by all teams before the final. A lucky goal by Will Preece in the last minute of the game meant that the spoils went to the previous chairman. Bill was on hand to hand over his trophy to his team who were extremely magnanimous in victory. The tournament was followed by some drinks back in the club house which was a great opportunity for new and old members to catch up and get to know each other. This was an excellent way to kick off the

new season with the weather also being very kind that day and everybody is now looking forward to the tough challenges that face all teams in the coming season.
