DEAR LIVE OAK COMMUNITY A
s we reflect on the 24/25 school year, we’re reminded of what is possible when a community leads with its values, invests in children, and embraces both the needs of today and the opportunities of tomorrow. This was a year marked by meaningful progress, bold decisions, and a shared commitment to ensuring that Live Oak continues to grow in ways that amplify the potential and promise of our students.
One of the most significant milestones of the past year was the School’s purchase of the property at 195 De Haro Street. In this transaction, the Board of Trustees directed the first major draw from the Futures Fund since its establishment during the School’s 50th year. This acquisition is both visionary and responsive. For many years, Live Oak has envisioned a space that could host performances, athletics, and community gatherings. The site at 195 De Haro affords us the concrete opportunity to move forward with this plan and to pursue a thoughtful, community-centered process to define the use of this new campus resource to improve our programs for our Live Oak learners and the adults who fuel their potential. Meanwhile, Live Oak made progress on other enhancements to our students’ experiences at school. Smaller class sizes and expanded elective offerings in Middle School have allowed faculty to better know our students and design classroom instruction that provides access and challenge to each learner, equipping each one with the skills, confidence, and agency to pursue emerging curiosities in their learning now and in the years ahead. Across the school, faculty used research-based and data-informed practices to individualize math and literacy benchmarks, and to conduct a DEIB audit of our social studies curriculum. That work is already shaping meaningful changes, including a reimagined
capstone experience for our eighth grade class that takes them on a Civil Rights history tour to the South. A task force of trustees and senior administrators worked with Blink Consulting last year to develop an Equity Decision Making Framework to be used to ensure the centering of Live Oak’s mission in governance and other leadership decision-making and change processes. The tool will be piloted in the year ahead to guide working groups through collaborations that anchor our work in Live Oak's values and create outcomes that amplify these values. As is always the case, the power and progress of our year at Live Oak relied on the full engagement of our school community. Thank you to our faculty and staff for their commitment to holding the highest standards for our students’ educational experiences; to our families for their trust, partnership, and helping hands; and to our students, whose curiosity, courage, and joy inspires us every day. POTENTIAL EVERY MEANINGFUL STEP IN LIVE OAK’S HISTORY HAS STARTED THE SAME WAY: WITH OUR COMMUNITY NOTICING WHAT STUDENTS NEED, IMAGINING WHAT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE, AND WORKING TOGETHER TO MAKE IT REAL. Live Oak’s growth has always been intentional: guided by what students need now and what will serve them well in the future. The work underway at 195 De Haro continues that tradition. In 2021, as Live Oak celebrated its 50th year, our community came together to seed the Futures Fund with $2million–an investment in possibility, created to ensure Live Oak could move decisively when extraordinary opportunities emerged. The purchase of 195 De Haro is one of those opportunities. After many years of exploring how to expand our campus resources, the Board’s Building & Grounds Committee identified the property as a strong next step: close to Mariposa, well sized for our goals, and a responsible investment of the resources our community set aside with care. What is happening now is the beginning of a multi-year process shaped by many voices. Through workshops and listening sessions with our partners at EHDD, students, families, faculty, and staff are beginning to sketch a vision for how this new space can complement and strengthen our current campus. The ideas emerging are consistent and encouraging: flexible learning spaces that support making and collaboration; spaces that bring performances, athletics, and community events to life; and an environment that reflects the warmth, creativity, and connection that are central to Live Oak. This input is not just feedback–it’s direction. It is helping us clarify what matters 6

A Strategic Quasi-Endowment What is the Futures Fund?
The Futures Fund is Board-designated pool of resources created in 2021 during Live Oak’s 50th Year. It was established so the School could respond thoughtfully and confidently to long-term opportunities that strengthen teaching, learning, and the student experience.
Is it an endowment?
It functions like one, but with more flexibility. The Futures Fund is a quasi-endowment–meaning the Board has chosen to treat it as a long-term, invested fund, even though the dollars were not donor-restricted for a specific purpose.
What does a “quasi-endowment” actually mean? A quasi-endowment is: • Invested for long-term growth • Used sparingly and strategically • Accessible only through Board approval
most and where we should focus as we move into the next phase of planning this school year. This work ahead will require us to refine program needs, study what the site can support, and align each step with Live Oak’s mission and values. We are grateful to the leadership provided by Live Oak’s Board of Trustees, with special appreciation for Joanne Cronin and Jack Poindexter who have served as chairpersons of the B&G Committee through these momentous times. And we’re thankful for every member of our community who is sharing ideas and energy as this vision takes shape. The story of 195 De Haro is still being written, and it reflects something essential about Live Oak: a belief in preparing well, listening closely, and planning together so that our students–today and tomorrow–can learn, grow, and thrive.
Essentially, it gives Live Oak the stability of an endowment with the ability to act when important, mission-aligned opportunities arise.
Why does Live Oak need this type of fund?
Schools thrive when they can plan ahead and respond quickly. The Futures Fund allows Live Oak to do both–strengthening the School today while preparing for the needs of tomorrow.
How does this benefit students?

THE CLASS OF 2025
LEGACY GIFT THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY OF THE CLASS OF 2025 AND THEIR FAMILIES, LIVE OAK’S NEW STEM LABS—FUNDED BY THIS YEAR’S EIGHTH GRADE LEGACY GIFT—ARE POISED TO TRANSFORM HOW STUDENTS EXPERIENCE SCIENCE AND MATH. THESE PURPOSEFULLY DESIGNED SPACES WILL GIVE STUDENTS GREATER OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE IN HANDS-ON INQUIRY, CROSS-DISCIPLINARY THINKING, AND PROJECT-BASED LEARNING THAT REFLECTS THE REAL-WORLD CHALLENGES THEY’RE EAGER TO EXPLORE. At Live Oak, science education begins with a student’s natural curiosity. The new labs are an investment in that curiosity, offering environments where learning isn’t limited by layouts or class transitions. With more time and space to carry out complex experiments, students will be better equipped to test hypotheses, problem-solve collaboratively, and connect their learning to current scientific issues.
From hydroponic plant systems that support studies in sustainable agriculture, to multi-day engineering builds, the new labs support the kind of hands-on, immersive learning students crave. Faculty are also using this opportunity to align curriculum more closely with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which emphasize both content knowledge and the development of key scientific practices and skills.
“There’s something special about having a space curated for the type of learning you want to have happen,” shares Associate Head of School Tanya Susoev. “Rather than fitting the learning to the space, we’re designing a space that expands what’s possible.”
“We do a lot of inquiry-based investigations—students are encouraged to pursue topics they’re passionate about,” says Middle School Science Teacher Neil Cashman. “It’s amazing to see what they come up with when they have the space and resources to explore.” In these labs, learning includes experimentation, failure, and iteration. Students will have opportunities to document and revisit their work, track progress, and adapt their thinking as they go—hallmarks of real scientific inquiry.
The vision for these new STEM Labs is about more than upgraded infrastructure—it’s about creating a setting where students can engage in meaningful, relevant, and at times, unexpected learning. As Susoev describes it, “We’re trying to do something that more deeply informs how our students engage in this space of curiosity, a space of the unknown. It allows them to leave Live Oak with a sense of purpose—and a deep understanding of why they learned science the way they did.” 10

Ultimately, the new STEM Labs reflect Live Oak’s commitment to equipping students with the tools and mindsets to better understand and shape the world around them. As Cashman puts it, “Science is never static—it’s always evolving. And so are our students.”

ADJUSTED TUITION AT LIVE OAK ACCESS IS A CORNERSTONE OF LIVE OAK’S MISSION. EACH YEAR, THE SCHOOL COMMITS SIGNIFICANT RESOURCES TO ENSURE THAT FAMILIES FROM A WIDE RANGE OF SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS HAVE ACCESS TO A LIVE OAK EDUCATION. In the 2024-25 school year, nearly 20% of the operating budget–about $3.5million–supported 24% of students through the Adjusted Tuition Program. Families contribute anywhere from $500 to full tuition, and adjustments are made for every aspect of the academic program. The impact of this work extends beyond the individual students and families. Socioeconomic diversity enhances educational outcomes for all students. A community of varied experiences strengthens classroom discussions, collaboration, and perspective-taking–fundamental to our students’ development of agency and advocacy in their learning.

EXPANDING ACCESS, STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY Live Oak’s multi-year partnership with The Children’s Education Initiative (TCEI) continues to be a major source of support for the Adjusted Tuition Program. In 2023-24, TCEI made an initial investment of $1.2 million to expand the program. In 2025, they awarded an additional $1.3 million, bringing their total commitment to over $2.5 million over 11 years to sustain socioeconomic diversity at the school. This increased investment recognizes the school’s continued efforts to build and maintain an equitable tuition model that reflects the school’s values. Long term affordability requires stable, predictable resources. Last year, Live Oak received two major gifts totaling $70,000 to the Holly Horton Scholarship Fund, an endowed fund that helps the school with its ambitious goals for socioeconomic representation. Established 15 years ago, in honor of Live Oak’s late Head of School Holly Horton, the fund requires ongoing investments to keep up with current needs. Its current value provides about $25,000 in tuition support, about half of the current tuition. Our long-term goal is to grow the fund to $1 million, enough to cover one student’s full tuition annually. Live Oak’s commitment to enrolling and supporting students and families from communities traditionally underrepresented in independent schools remains strong. In a city of increasing socio-economic disparity, we continue to be intentional about ensuring that families at all points on the socio-economic spectrum feel fully included in the school’s curriculum and community. Philanthropic support—annual giving, foundation partnerships, and endowed funds—plays a critical role in helping us advance these goals. PARENT + GUARDIAN VOLUNTEERS Live Oak School is able to provide a year's worth of engaging activities and memorable experiences thanks to the leadership of our Parent Guardian Association and the generosity of the parents/guardians below who gave of their time and energy over the 24/25 school year to lead these all-school events and bring them to life for our school community. Central to Live Oak's mission is inspiring changemakers and supporting lifelong learners.
