Special Topics: 2 sessions each The school day ends at 2:15pm on Wednesdays. 3:15pm is the regular dismissal time. Team sports start in 5th grade. We offer: volleyball, futsal (indoor soccer), cross country, or basketball. Athletic practices and some of our games happen at Jackson Park and the Bakar Fitness Center at USCF Mission Bay. Students will have art, music, and PE as part of the schedule. One week they’ll have art or music twice and PE once. The following week. they’ll have art or music once and PE twice. Groves allow us to build community across grades. Every student is placed into a Grove when they arrive, and stay with that Grove until they graduate. There are about 2-3 students from each grade in each Grove.
Middle School Schedule Highlights These specials meet twice every 10-days: Social Impact Studio - Students learn about what it means to work in solidarity with our community, explore what’s happening at the intersection of social justice and hands-on making, and discover our place as contributors in our world. This is the place where those big ideas become real. Library/Media Literacy/Programming - In library class students learn library science skills, media literacy, and coding skills. Study Skills - Our Middle School Learning Specialist leads this 6th grade course to help the students improve their executive functioning skills to ensure success in Middle School. Seminar - Led by our high school guidance counselor, this class guides students through the high school process by identifying their core values and encouraging students to find a high school that matches those values. Students will also gain support in the application and interview process through one-on-one sessions.
Affinity and Alliance Spaces - These groups give students a chance to connect, share experiences, and build community around identify and belonging. Students can join: LGBTQ+ Alliance, Feminist Alliance, Multiracial/Multilingual Affinity, Middle Eastern & South Asian Affinity, Students of Color Affinity, Neurodiverse Learners Affinity, Jewish Affinity. Student Activities meet once per cycle at the beginning of the day: Art Club, Board Games, Climbing Club, Coding Club, Fiber Arts, DIY, DND, Karaoke, Leadership, Poetry/Song Writing Club, Sports Predictions, Study Hall, Yearbook As part of our outdoor education program, 6th graders embark on a twonight journey to Big Sur, and the 7th grade head to Yosemite National Park for three nights! These trips happen at the start of the school year to both broaden and deepen relationships with their peers while also introducing concepts they will learn in the science and Social Impact Studio classes. Our 8th graders start the year with a two-day retreat to build their sense of leadership at Live Oak and end the school year with a 5-day Civil Rights Tour in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia.
