The years pass. The times change. The only thing that survives and transcends this inevitable process, that shines brighter with each new era, is the record of a great human spirit that has endured struggle and remained true to its deepest conviction to the end. - Daisaku Ikeda
John Pettigrew’s nearly 50 years’ work as an Irish landscape architect and sculptor has left a lasting impact not just on the people he has met and worked with but with the land he has worked on. Across countries his inescapable ‘scapes’ have grown into living breathing spaces.
The sheer brilliance of his designs in nature leaves one awestruck by the simplicities of layout, and attention to detail woven into the rhythms and life cycles of the land. Every leaf, every flower and every drop of water carries with it the life force of the land. What John has done is to bring all these natural elements together in a harmonious synergy, thus creating memorable landscapes that embrace those that tread through it.

John Pettigrew Portrait of an Irish Landscape Architect Landscape is a canvas for John Pettigrew, who draws his holistic vision using much of the indigenous elements from the land, and within this he creates other gardens that may be inspired by Japanese, Italian, Irish, Spanish, French, Balinese gardens etc. His work can be viewed across many countries. This is but a glimpse of John’s vision and life works narrated by him extempore. My main inspiration was basically with my dad.
I come from Wicklow, which is known as the Garden of Ireland. And I was very fortunate to live in an old big rectory with a large garden. Beyond that, there were the lakes, beautiful lakes. It was a wildlife sanctuary. It’s only a wildlife sanctuary because my father fought the county. He fought them because they wanted to build on it. And he said, “I will lie down in front of the JCB. I will lie down in front of it.” Anyway, he stopped it.

PORTRAIT OF AN IRISH LANDSCAP
So, we would go up the lakes to the tranquil and sylvan surroundings. And he would say to me, “John, look in the water. What do you see?” (I’ve mentioned this in Legends of Landscapes.) I would kind of look in the water. And I’d say, “I see water.” And he’d say, “Just keep looking.”
The whole idea for him was for me to slow down. I started to observe and hear things. He’d urge me to keep looking.
And I’d say, “Well, I see ripples.”
He would say again, “So, what else do you see?”
And I would reply, “I’m really looking. Oh, I see. I see the moving clouds. I see the moving clouds and the reflection of the water. I’d say, yes, that’s it.”
Dad was a keen observer because he was a reflection painter. He always started with the sky when he painted, and then would come down and start painting the reflections. So, he’d say to me, “So what do you hear?” 10

And I’d say, “You know what do I hear? I hear the water lapping up against the boat. I can hear some birds, like, moorhens in the rushes and reeds.”
This was the impetus for me to really start to slow down and observe. Because if you’re a painter, you really need, and especially a landscape painter, you really need to observe. You need to look. You really need to capture everything.
So, that was his teaching, that was the first time that I really started to kind of slow down and become aware of my surroundings. Earlier I would be wrapped up in my own life doing crazy things or getting up to mischief you with my friends. But once I started to appreciate the surrounding nature I embraced it. I’m very fortunate to have been brought up in the County of Wicklow, the Garden of Ireland, with its many lakes, rivers and forests. It was just kind of opening my eyes to it. That was the epiphany for me to start observing, looking and listening.
Dad was a painter his whole life. He was a clergyman, but he was also a highly recognized Irish painter. His life and works both as a clergyman and a painter inspired me to find my place in nature...to choose landscape design. After I left St. Columbus boarding school up in the Dublin Hills, I went to Gurteen Agriculture / Horti-culture College for a year. After this I spent six months as an apprentice in Forestry on the shores of Lough Gill in Sligo where my dad comes from, the same lake that inspired W B Yeats to write the “The Lake Isle of Innisfree”. Then I attended The Horticultural Institute for a year. Later, I was lucky enough to be awarded a scholarship to The National Botanic Gardens at Glasnevin Dublin where I studied Horticulture and Landscape Design. It was here that life really started for me. Being a gregarious person, I met so many people and made so many friends.

PORTRAIT OF AN IRISH LANDSCAP
My dad proposed to mum while rowing on the lake to Innisfree and reciting this poem:
The Lake Isle of Innisfree By William Butler Yeats
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made; Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of the linnet’s wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart’s core. The connection with Nature grounds me, and as the years have rolled on I feel more one with nature. This interaction not only clears my head but gives me a meaningful purpose, the purpose of contributing to the life force of the planet. My love of nature is definitely very, very strong.
On one of my visits to India, a psychic advised me to always be surrounded by beauty. This kind of warmed my heart! In the early days of Ubud, when it was the last paradise, it would hurt me if somebody put up a sign or erected a building that was ugly. I would sometimes go out in the middle of the night and take down these posters. I was one of those guys who wanted to preserve the beauty of Ubud, and only add to that.
And you can see by going into my studio, I’m surrounded by a lot of antiques. I’ve been collecting antiques for quite some time. And with antiques, you collect history…you have a piece of history. Their aura gives me a sense of belonging to a world of great beauty. I have a large antique speaker circa 1920s. This speaker must have pumped out fantastic sounds in the roaring 20s.

I look at these antiques all the time. I find them beautiful. People often remark, “Why do you keep all this junk”.
Look at a radio produced in the 1920s and the ones produced these days. There is a huge difference. In fact, they are reintroducing retro style designs of the 1920s and 1950s.
I have always been interested in art. In fact if you look around my home you will see artworks from many different artists.
Becoming a sculptor is a progression from my design of gardens of numerous resorts around the world. Initially, there was always a sculptural team on a project. But when I began using my powers of intuitiveness and observation, I realised that I could do it even better. My sculptures adorn more than six or seven resorts. I would always come up with a theme, depending on the resort I am working on.
For example, the spa area Regent Bali Canggu where people want to relax and get, the treatment...I thought to myself, “So what’s relevant here?”. Birds. Birds taking flight. Freedom. You know, soaring into flight. The bird represents freedom, a connection between earth and sky. There many sculptures of birds taking flight in the spa. And then there is one, which looks like a Yoni, but it also can be a lamp, with water next to a water feature. It is in the herb garden. The massive water urns placed in the middle of a water feature captivate the visitors.
I work extensively in India and Bali. Often, I take elements from one place and use them in another, weaving elements of one into another. In a manner of speaking, I am combining (for want of a better term), cultures.

PORTRAIT OF AN IRISH LANDSCAP
The nautilus sculpture was created by me for a resort in Canggu. where there is a fabulous beach area.
I always associate a sculpture with the area that I am designing for. This is also inspired from my ancestors, design in nature.
James Bell Pettigrew said that there’s a design in everything, in life, everything we see, everything in nature. That is why my company is – Design in Nature. It’s from his volumes of design in nature. Not many people know this. I attempt to create different styles for different resorts. I try to bring some inspiration from the area. The materials are sourced locally, as much as possible to keep the natural feeling. I designed formal gardens. Here too one can see some of my sculptures.
These days I’m not only designing natural style gardens but many other types of gardens; formal herb gardens, 17th century herb gardens, monastery gardens, gardens inspired by the Palaces of Versailles, Louis XIV.
And within some gardens I create other gardens to enhance interest. I work primarily with greens, lots of greens. I don’t like too many brightly coloured plants and definitely no variegation. Variegation plants have two colours or more. These days they are being mass planted. I like simplicity because the eye can only take in so much.
I try to give guests a feeling of the natural. But within the natural gardens I create different styles. If you walk around the region you’ll see a Zen Garden, you’ll see a form of herb garden, a yoga garden, a spa…they are all within this natural garden. So, these different spaces tend to create different spaces within. But, ultimately, the main design of the resort would definitely blend with nature, 40

Presently, we are designing for Taj Hampi. A lot of grasses are being used along with flat water bodies, some big water bodies. Natural planting…a lot of coconut palms, or date palms planted in mass. It is work in progress. Very exciting. And onto a project, which I put my heart and soul into…The Ritz Carlton Reserve in China. The project began during COVID and lasted for three years. Prior to the commencement of work the area was hit by earthquakes. The structural retaining walls had collapsed. I had to put a lot of work into the walls I had redesigned. Lots of grass and moss is growing out of them. They are naturally reinforced by the use of local materials. I remember the first time I drove up to the site there were Yak everywhere. And I said, “Oh we have to have the Yak there.” So, we built a paddock for a couple of Yak and horses.
If one walks around the resort there are some symbols that I have designed in the paving: The Lotus Flower from Buddhism, which symbolises cause and effect because it produces the flower and the seed at the same time. I visited many monasteries and the surrounding countryside to source materials of stone, timber, indigenous plant species, grasses and local trees. If one views the resort from a distance there is no divide between the surrounding mountains, forests and the resort. The forest comes down and merges with the resort. It is very important to me to merge the landscape to give it a natural feeling.
As for the sculptures, I surveyed the area…visiting Tibetan monasteries…I saw a lot of stupas. I found old Harrow discs and collected them in different sizes and erected my version of a stupa to reflect spirituality…a spiritual ambience…you know…reaching up to the heavens. There are some created by stacking stones. Water for me is the element of life itself. Hence, the resort has numerous water features.

Now in India, I am working on a 95-acre resort, which is a holistic retreat. I am focused. I said this to myself. I said this to the owner. I don’t care if I don’t design another high-end home-villa resort…I want to create gardens that have meaning, that people will observe…maybe some will learn to slow down and find a nice place. But a holistic retreat, that’ something on a different level where it’s almost a lifechanging experience. It is in Lonavala, a hill station about 96km east of Mumbai.
The retreat is a peninsula; it’s water on three sides. I’m designing a meditation centre and areas for yoga...labyrinth designs, walking labyrinths and woodland walkways. Interestingly, about this holistic centre is that the client is first building a gaushala (a shelter for cows). Once completed, cows will be able to freely roam the retreat and guests can feed them. But we will have to set up fences. For me, this project is spiritually rejuvenating. The excitement is palpable.
I will never retire. Yes, probably slow down, try and be more selective. I will remain in Ubud but perhaps move to Tabanan, where it is quieter.
Since the 1980s I’ve travelled. I need to constantly ‘feed’ the insatiable need for inspiration. If one spends too much time in one place the island ‘fever’ will get you.
Hence, I am always travelling. Now, it is between India and Bali. I find these two place connected culturally and yet are different in many ways. This gives me a perspective to creative reality and helps me in avoiding the sameness in work.

I want to get back to my art. I haven’t painted since my Dad passed away nearly three years ago. In fact, I told the owner of this holistic centre that I was going to bring my paints here because it is so beautiful. When I paint I become the observer, the all seeing eye to detail, an artist that merges with nature in all its beauty. The sublime energy is creatively rejuvenating. I design the lights and sculptures for all projects. The lighting for the Ritz Carlton is almost like a temple – the hood, metal, stone…inspiration from my walks to the temples in the vicinity. I remember the time I came across a large apple tree while walking through a Tibetan village. The tree was festooned with little red things. I asked monks and they told me that it was a prayer tree where one hangs one’s wish. It was a wish tree. When you are out and about in Tibet or even the hills in Bali, you see things that add another ‘stone’ in your mosaic of sensory perception.
Often I have to remind myself to avoid fiddling with the natural order of things by assuming that replication of a design will create an even ‘better’ end result. Unfortunately, many architects and designers fall into this trap.
My creative reservoir constantly needs to be emptied and restored for the germination of new ideas. It is a long journey where there is no destination, where the journey itself is the destination. I want always to be a student of life. I want always to learn new things. I want always to grow.
Once you have reached the point where you think you know everything, you start going backwards. This is the biggest danger.

PORTRAIT OF AN IRISH LANDSCAP
When I mention family, I am referring to the bond that stretches back to the 1700s and 1800s. Henry Bell, who designed and built the first steamship in Europe, and introduced steam passenger boats on the River Clyde.
And then there is the even more famous, James Bell Pettigrew, a museum curator, who published several volumes on the Design in Nature* – how everything in Nature comes back to design. Besides this, he was also a pioneer of the theory of flight. He actually flew before the Wright brothers. He drew beautiful images of the Theory of Flight, which were basically the study of birds… the wings of birds. Once he strapped himself into his motor-powered aeroplane and flew 200 metres, crashed and broke his femur. He passed away shortly after the accident. My sculpture of the bird in flight has been inspired by James Bell Pettigrew’s images from his Theory of Flight. This takes me back to the time I spent with my father on the lakes in Wicklow, painting, studying reflection, listening to Nature speak to me through the birds.
My mother, a well-known author, was empathy personified particularly towards injured and abused animals. She would rescue stray animals and nurse them back to health, especially donkeys. In Ireland, there’s a lot of abused donkeys because at one time the donkey was the beast of burden. Therefore, there were a lot of different donkey sanctuaries. Novi, my wife, has a great love for animals. She used to always bring into our home several stray cats in really bad condition. Besides showing her deep compassion for animals, she is also an established fashion designer under her brand - Asia Flow. She has had nermous fashions shows.

No matter how wonderful our dreams, how noble our ideals, or how high our hopes, ultimately we need courage to make them a reality. Without action, it’s as if they never existed. - Daisaku Ikeda
Nam Myōhō Renge Kyō When Shakyamuni Buddha gave us the Lotus Sutra, he was telling us that we are all Buddhas. But he couldn’t say this in earlier Sutras because people wouldn’t comprehend, that we all have this Buddhahood. He also said that when he obtained enlightenment it wasn’t just under a Bodhi tree. It has always been there and always will be there ...by chanting Nam Myōhō Renge Kyō we are bringing out our buddha nature … the law of the universe that governs everything in life I practice Nichiren Buddhism and member of the Shoka Gakkai.
This form of Buddhism encourages the faithful to chant about things in one’s life… daily tribulations, sadness, desires etc. The chanting leads us down the path to a spiritual revolution that lifts us out of the traps we set for ourselves in daily life. It guides us through chanting to become the best versions of ourselves. It is a journey, a long journey through self-discovery, of human revolution battling our negative karma and overcoming our demons, to become better human beings. For example, I usually chant for one hour in the morning. Things come up if I am chanting about my life. An epiphany normally follows; inspiration comes rushing through me. For example, I usually chant for one hour in the morning. Things come up if I am chanting about my life. An epiphany normally follows; inspiration comes rushing through me.
Prior to practising Nichiren Buddhism, I lived a helter-skelter fast paced overindulgent life-style that drained me, drained my soul. I was lost in the darkness of my own selfimportance. I think the chanting has dramatically impacted my work and disciplined me especially when dealing with clients, difficult situations and the vagaries of living in a volatile society.

Legends of Landscape Legends of Landscape is an important original video series featuring the fabulous world of landscaping. Founder of Ecoscapes, Suraj Nayak, a seasoned landscape designer from Bengaluru, India, is the lead host. He has 17 years’ experience in landscaping. Irish landscape artist, John Pettigrew, considered to one of the finest landscape architects in the world with nearly 50 years’ experience, is the protagonist. Suraj had been pushing John Pettigrew to feature his landscape architecture on youtube. In fact, Legends of Landscape, would not have happened without Suraj conceptualising and putting the series into production. His tenacity has padi off.
Presently, five videos have been produced on site covering landscapes in Indonesia, India and Ireland. The sixth video is in production. The dua (Suraj and John) are painstakingly building this series into a truly international project covering many countries. The videos can be viewed here - https://www.youtube.com/@ecoscapesindia
