ON THE HILL
artist residence comblain-au-pont first bachelor uliège
Located in Comblain-au-Pont, on the heights of Ourthe valley, the artist residence adopts a strong attitude to the forest. The project is at the end of a boardway leading to a view point of the village. The house is a clear volume floating above a work space. It is open to nature and walkers so that artworks can gather people into a space, with a panoramic view around the service block. The structure allows the work space to be completely freed and allows the artists to go up to the housing area just above it. The three storeys are connected with a structure, composed of three technical blocks. The workspace can be closed by a cladding which can slide on the facade. The atrium on the side of the block connects the residence to the artits under and gives a double dimension to work space. The project proposes a space for artists to express themselves surrounded by nature.

EMISSIVITY

The project aims in merging laws of emissivity with architecture and in reinventing a new way of designing. Emissivity is a physical phenomenon which quantifies the quantity of energy by radiation that materials can absorb. A material has a capacity of thermal reflection that varies according to its temperature and its state of surface. The quantity of energy that a human being generate is equal to the quantity he needs to receive from his environment. Choosing a reflective material as sandblasted aluminium, space can be generated with the concept of reflection. The distance between the ceiling and floor modifies the temperature. Every function can be placed in a higher or lower space depending on the temperature it needs. The plan is open and free, every single space is defined by its height. Emissivity tends to design architecture in a way that spares the most energy possible.

ROYAL ART & HISTORY MUSEUM
rethinking the national museum brussels adaptive reuse - international master uhasselt
The Royal Museum of Art & History located in the Cinquantenaire parc in Brussels houses thousands of historical objects and artworks from all over the world and the ages. Unfortunately the museum doesn’t has the image and the standing that it should deserves. The organisation of the museum itself doesn’t allow the visitors to understand the building and it’s four sectors. The most beautiful spaces of the museum are not well presented and unused. The horizontal axis that connects the different exhibition spaces is turned into a public avenue becoming a heart of life and an iconic atmosphere. This also creates free access to the shop and restaurant. This space is bathed in white giving then, an abstract space detaching the visitor from the contentious history. The covered glass pyramid sector is also reinterprated to create a turning exhibition instead of temporary. The dark fabric covering the roof is removed to create a daylightfull space to exhibit the hidden treasures of the museum. In the underground, the actual auditorium is extended in order to host bigger events and more artistic performance into the museum.

The exercice’s goal is to design a project inspired by an iconic building, the Fisher house from Louis Kahn in Pensilvania. The idea was to keep the concept of the two merging boxes and to adapt the new shape to a totally different site, a classic plot in the centre of Liège. The double high and the strong chimney in the living room were also very important elements to keep in mind while thinking about the project. The two merging volumes allow to give an integrated facade to the context. The strong vertical element in the living room allows better junction between the two volumes, integrating all the techniques, and becoming a link between all spaces in the house. The centre element allows to reach every storey and any facilities. All the ideas from the Fisher House have been redesigned in order to propose a brand new version of the project in a completely different context.

YESTERDAY’S ARCHITECTURE FOR TOMORROW

The project takes place in the city of Sully-surLoire, in the Loiret. This is an intervention in an old city gate, built in the fifties. At the junction of the rambles along the Loire and the castle moat. The project clarifies the identity of the former centre and creates a new relation between the castle and the city. It enhances the facades that are typical from the region and completely resets the interior space by contrasting time and materials. The tourist office expresses itself in transparency with strength to the scale of city. It opens and redefines the island heart language typical of Sully-sur-Loire. The youth hostel occupies the rest of the building and rethinks the interiror spaciality with a rhythm of objects defining new spaces. Those boxes, integrating the facilities, reinvent the community life.

LA FABRIQUE
XXth heritage marchienne-au-pont second master uliège
The ensemble of the Brasserie des Alliés is located in Marchienne-au-Pont in Hainaut. It was built by the architect René Dubois in 1937. At the back to producers age, the direct consumption and the community life, the project of an enterprice and craft centre integrates the former brewery with the new labour codes. All the new functions are spread around the ensemble in each buildings just about the central space that works as a gathering point, a public square. The workshops correspond to the community philosophy integrated by the project but they also fit into the existing structure. The device is modular and allow to the space to be modified and reorganised according to the needs. The workshops are then flexible to move following the activities. The partitions express themselves transparently to the rythm of the concrete columns. The glass walls gives to the project an strong caracter but aslo a global unity through the different buildings.

The project is located in the valley of Ourthe, on a thin island. The river welcomes a large slalom for kayaks. The existing building is an open lightfull pavillion with great views on the river. The idea was to transform this volume into an elegant lounge bar which could work independently. The other volume is the kayak centre itself with a more dynamic and contemporain shape. A big timber structure covering two spaces. The first space is designed in a concrete bloc with all de facilities: sport hall, meeting room, workshop... The second part is a storage for kayaks organised with six long shelves furniture. This volume is defined by a metallic white cladding allowing it to give an interesting light effect. The island ground is also redesign to create different docks, depending on the kayak level. The project gives a better profile to the island with two strong white volumes.

TRAIN SLOPES

The project, close to the centre of Liège, tries to redifine how to live in a student comminuty. The triangle shaped plot is slope trapped on one side by the road and by the rail ways on the other. The idea is to create a private courtyard in the slope, linking two expressive volumes. The block facing the road is welcoming student apartments, three units made for eight students each.The other one facing the rail ways welcomes a space with studios and smaller flats, designed for any kind of family. The student apartments are organised on two stories, eight rooms and four bathrooms surrounding a shared living room. These are directly connected to the community hall just below it. Anyone can gather in that big space, made to welcome any kind of activities. The project proposes another vision of collective housing and student life for every step of the day.

THE KENNEDY ENSEMBLE

The Chiroux library and cultural centre were the biggest public library in Wallonia and were at the time a very important cultural place in the city. Since the authority announced in 2018 the intention to move the library in a new building further from the centre, it is high time to redefine a new identity for this great piece of modern brutalist architecture in town. The architecture faculty, who is actually in deep mutation, perfectly aims to regenerate the neighbourhood. But the complexity of the building tends to add other functions and aims at creating a cultural hub. The faculty takes place in the trapezoidal shape building following the opportunity to have wide rooms for the ateliers. On the ground floor level, the big entrance hall of the faculty becomes a mix used space, flexible following the needs. On the two upper floors, the large spaces are dedicated to the classrooms, ateliers and are free to use, flexible depending on the classes. On the roof, a minimalist volume is added for the personal workspace for each student. The bridge building becomes a foyer where students, teachers and staff members can gather for lunch or any time of the day. It is a space handled by the students and is open any time. The rotunda volume is dedicated to the public or semipublic functions : the associations, the Bouwmeester, an auditorium and the library. The project aims at respecting, preserving and highlight the concrete structure that participate at the soul of the building. 63
