GUIDE TO RESIDENCE LIFE BROOKLYN CAMPUS

RESIDENCE LIFE OVERVIEW LIU Promise Mission Statement LIU Promise is a collaborative and innovative program dedicated to providing a highly individualized holistic education that fosters student success and persistence; cultivates a community of belonging; encourages life-long learning; and develops global citizenship and future leaders.

Residence Life at LIU Brooklyn LIU Brooklyn is recognized as one of the safest and most beautiful college campuses in the country. Residence Life strives to build community, support and promote diversity, provide leadership opportunities to residents, respond to individual and community issues, and enable academic success through our efforts in the residence halls. The majority of our residential population is comprised of undergraduate students and some graduate students enrolled in fulltime study. Full time for undergraduate students is 12-credits, full time for Graduate students is a minimum of 6-credits.

LIU Brooklyn Residence Halls Conolly Hall | First-Year/Upperclassmen Richard L. Conolly Hall is a 16-story building that offers standard residence hall rooms with a shared bathroom, suites which have a private bathroom and apartments which have a private bathroom and a kitchen. All rooms include an extra-long twin sized bed, desk, desk chair, dresser, wardrobe unit/closet, and air-conditioning. Conolly residents can enjoy the convenience of dining in the Shark Bite Café on the first floor of the building.

490 Fulton | Graduate/Upperclassmen and 21plus Graduate students and student 21 and older are provided the option of living in our apartmentstyle Residence Hall, 490 Fulton St., just a short walk from campus. 490 Fulton Street Residence Hall is reserved for graduate students and features studio and one-bedroom apartments and fully furnished two, three, four, five, and six-bedroom apartments units. Utilities, cable, internet, heat, and air conditioning are included in your rent. The building has numerous study suites and recreation areas for residents to utilize.

THEMED-HOUSING First-Year Floors Conolly Hall’s first-year residence floors are located between the 10th and 14th floor. Students utilize the First-Year Lounges located at the center of the floors to hang out and make new friends. In addition, the residence life team will host programming throughout these floors to initiate connections, build community, and build key academic skills for increase academic success.

School Of Roc-Nation Floor The Conolly Hall School of Roc-Nation Floor houses similar minded first-year students who are enrolled in the school of Roc-Nation. This floor allows students to collaborate, connect and explore the many areas and benefits of the School of Roc-Nation.

Honors Community The Honors community is located in Conolly Hall. This knowledge community will have access to a residential curriculum aimed at building key academic success skills, creating study cohorts, building faculty relationships, and developing a community.

LIU Cares The LIU Cares community will be located in Conolly and Fulton Hall. This community is focused on building partnerships with local organizations and providing responsible service and philanthropy opportunities. In addition, students living in this community will have increased exposure to specific community service experiences in the local area. Presentations from faculty, staff, and guest speakers will regularly occur to create a fully immersive experience.

RESIDENTIAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES Our residence life staff are intentional in hosting both educational and social programs that build a vibrant and inclusive community. Through programming, we provide a sense of home to a diverse student population. We create communities built on a culture of respect and compassion.

Residence Hall Association The purpose of Residence Hall Association (RHA) is to provide a platform for the expression of resident issues and concerns; provide community service, educational, and social programming for all residents; recognize the contributions of students, faculty, and staff to the advancement of living on campus. Resident students are encouraged to participate in this association to advocate for student success and advancement in the residence halls.

Community Building Model       

RA staff members are responsible for completing three (3) programs per semester. Two programs should be held per month. Two (2) individual programs per semester and one (1) collaborative program. One (1) event must be a philanthropic event (Move-a-thon/ Relay for Life) One (1) event must be a collaboration with an outside department RAs are expected to work as a team to coordinate, advertise, and implement the program. All programs proposals and budgets need to be approved by the RD of the residence hall by the end of training, any changes to programming must be submitted at least three (3) weeks prior to the program. At least one (1) building program must take place during a weekend. Programs must be approved by the respective RD and submitted on the RA Hub.

COMMUNITY & PROGRAMMING RESPONSIBILITIES Lobby and Lounge Upkeep 



Each RA staff is responsible for the preparation and upkeep of the lobbies and lounges in their respective residence hall. All lobbies and lounges are expected to have updated flyers. Furniture in these spaces should be routinely re-set and checked for cleanliness and maintenance concerns. Each RD, and Promise staff members, may request RAs to make specific-themed posters or bulletin boards that promote campus events.

Door Tags and Bulletin Board Requirements   

Door Tags must be continuously updated according to your changes in room assignments. Each bulletin board must be covered and decorated once per semester, and completed prior to the beginning of the semester. Bulletin Boards must be approved by each RD prior to being displayed. Bulletin Boards are expected to be professional, appropriate, and maintained throughout the semester. Any door tags or bulletin boards that are destroyed or defaced must be replaced immediately.

Floor Meetings  

All RAs are required to hold two (2) Floor Meetings per semester. One (1) meeting should be held during opening and (1) meeting should be held prior to closing. LIU Promise may require that RAs conduct additional floor meetings based on individual residence hall needs and concerns.



Floor Meetings must be promoted to the entire floor at least one (1) week prior to the date, and attendance must be submitted to the RD at or before the next building staff meeting.

Health and Safety Inspections 

    

RAs are required to conduct two health and safety inspections per semester based on instruction from their RD. This should be conducted during the first week of opening and then during the middle of the semester. Times and dates will be given to the staff by the RD of the residence hall. Before entering a resident’s room, RA staff members must knock loudly three times and announce themselves. RA staff members must never enter a room alone, they must be accompanied by another staff member. Notice of Health and Safety checks must be posted at least one (1) week prior to the date of inspection. When conducting a Health and Safety Inspection, RA staff members are not allowed to move any items within the room, open drawers, etc. If a violation is found during inspection, the object of violation must be confiscated and brought to the RA Office. The Health and Safety Form should be left in a visible and open area in the room. RD are required to conduct Health and Safety of RAs rooms once every semester. They must be accompanied by another RD staff member.

Campus Connections     

Staff members should complete at least three (3) Campus Connections each semester. Campus Connections can be for any campus event that isn’t already a required event by LIU Promise. LIU Promise will provide a list of “Required Campus Events” and “Suggested Campus Connections” at RA training. Additional Required Campus Connections may be announced during the semester by LIU Promise. Required Campus Events and Suggested Campus Connections can be found on the RA Hub. After the completion of a Campus Connection, each RA must submit a form on the RA Hub. “Hall Calling” is a method of going through the residence halls to promote for an event that is occurring in the residence hall or on campus. RAs should take initiative and hall call for programs. LIU Promise, or an RD, can also require RAs to conduct a hall call prior to an event.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE STAFF 6

Our Residence Life Staff consists of full-time professional staff assigned to each Residence Hall. Residence Directors and Resident Assistants work with students throughout the day as well as during evening office hours. Members of our Residence Life staff are on-call for emergencies at all time.

Resident Directors Residence Directors work as full-time, live-in staff members and are the direct supervisors of Resident Assistants. They are responsible for the daily administration of the Residence Halls, addressing facilities concerns, resolving student conduct violations, program planning and serve as a resource for residents within their halls.

Resident Assistants Resident Assistants (RA) are student leaders who live within the residence halls. Resident Assistants facilitates the development of a positive and safe living environment within the Residence Halls.

Public Safety The Department of Public Safety employs a full staff of public safety officers who serve our community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year while maintaining a close relationship with the local Police Department and other local officials.
