marine microplastics collection & treatment in the maldives

Source: In September 2023, I travelled to the Maldives, an ocean-dependent country, to interact with the locals, learn about the local marine waste recycling mechanism, and to address the plight of the local people who are unable to collect microplastics from the ocean. In order to carry out my research, I obtained PADI's Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver, and participated in the PROJECT AWARE Dive Against Debris Diver marine environmental protection activities to do my part in environmental protection.

The beautiful Maldives has been carefully maintaining the environment.

What is Microplastic and Where are they from?

The islanders asked:

What is sea food ?

that even though they live with the sea every day, they don t know the word sea food”.

When I interviewed the islanders, I was surprised to find out

Microplastics and micro-fibres refer to suspended particles with a diameter greater than 1 micron and less than 5 mm. These particles are suspended in the oceans between 5 and 20 meters underwater. They are usually derived from decomposing rubbish from maritime activities and clothing fibres carried in sewage.

> Resource

Microplastics, when accidentally ingested by marine organisms, can endanger their health for example by clogging their digestive tracts or even causing death.

Microplastics can also adsorb toxic and harmful substances from the marine environment and carry it with them as it spreads through the oceans with ocean currents, posing a threat to the survival of species worldwide

Some studies have pointed out that plastic toxins and mercury contamination can affect the foetus if a pregnant woman consumes seafood. In addition, if a person consumes fish with plastic toxins in their system, it can affect their reproductive and immune systems.

During one of my diving experiences in the Maldives, I participated in PADI's Dive Against Debris and collected a lot of marine litter. The pollutants I collected

“I'm worried about the damage microplastics are doing to the oceans, and I think there will be fewer tourists if a lot of fish die off.”

Divers picking up marine litter in the Maldives are currently unable to solve the problem of microplastic collection in the oceans.

Local divers usually go into the water with a sack or netting received from P

DI to

up marine litter, large marine litter is usually easy to deal with but not microplastics, and marine litter picked up ashore is disposed of by the government.

There are still gaps in methods and standards for monitoring and sampling Microplastics at the sea , so How do we deal with the problem of Microplastics in the oceans?

technical possibilities research

TEsT、 EXPERIMENT

What is Microplastic and Where are they from?

We prepared the required materials, carried out tests and came up with the best solution by simulating the device in a water tank.

We calculated the amount of salt to be added to the water and simulated seawater by adding a pump and salt to the tank.

Three aperture nets are placed in the middle of a flowing tank, and as time increases, the nets become more and more plastic.

We added three different sizes of microplastics to the water and added them to the arranged tanks to simulate microplastics in the ocean.

However, we have found that nets can filter microplastics but cannot make them stay and collect them. So how do you get microplastics to stay on the net?

We tried and tested a variety of folding methods and ultimately chose the roll method, which collects the most microplastics, to create our final product.

Experiments proved that this folding method has a significant effect in collecting microplastics.

IDEATION

We would like to create a device that , combining a plastic filter material with different pore sizes that are regularly overlapped and rolled into a cylinder to collect as many microplastics as possible to alleviate the microplastic problem in the ocean.

Mountain Road optimazation

Jixi Mountain area, Anhui Province, China Road optimization and interactive traffic applications

Source: Always concerned with rural revitalisation, I joined the Designer Pilot Project in July 2023, traveling to Jixi County, Anhui, China. There, a mountain road faced a one-way traffic issue due to increased lodge traffic and construction. During fieldwork, I identified wide areas for meeting points and worked with my team to solve this using programming and sensors. We simulated various meeting scenarios on a computer to find the best solution.

Tourism accounts for a large proportion of the economy resource

Government Brief

The problem of insufficient width of the two-way lanes of the mountain roads.

has caused a lot of trouble and safety problems for local residents and tourists.

Rural roads are very complex

In the area, the road was built after the construction of the village, so there are many residential houses, reservoirs, farmland, cliffs, and even chicken coops and cemeteries next to the road. Therefore, it is impractical to widen the road to a two-way lane

design goal

Increase the throughput per unit time of a single channel.

algorithm Logic

We summarize the logic of allowing passing at the meeting point by listing the many situations in which vehicles meet at the same meeting point. Ultimately, we solve the vehicle meeting problem using a form that allows only ane vehicle to pass on a section of road.

We tested wide and narrow meeting points through p5js and finalized a solution with 2 wide and 6 narrow meeting points.

Raised warning balloons

Due to a non-electric mechanical structure may be more suitable for mountainous warning facilities. high demand, maintenance challenges, and cost control needs,

Common

Traditional traffic lights, without any education costs for drivers, are relatively simple to manufacture and purchase. But the price and maintenance cost is high

We use infrared sensors to detect if a vehicle is passing and micro servos to simulate the opening and closing of the auto barrier gate.

Due to the lack of understanding of traffic rules by the local population, as well as the difficulty in complying with signs and signals, we needed to be able to forcefully control the vehicles to ensure that they met at the meeting point. The final choice was to use auto barrier gate.

Expensive gates, which can accurately control the passage of vehicles, are relatively more susceptible to damage

Vehicles meeting test

We demonstrated this intuitive demo to traffic management department

We created a sand table in which the auto barrier gate was controlled with a micro servo and infrared sensors were used to detect if a vehicle passed through. The final test was done with remote controlled cars.

Impact to Govrerment

The project in 2023 was a real-life workshop that allowed the government to engage in a lot of discussion and creativity about road management in mountainous areas. Finally, we came up with a product solution that is cheap, easy to deploy, and suitable for the JIXI region.

Source: By chance, we participated in PADI's ocean-loving activity. We gained a new understanding of the ocean and the creatures in it and found that we all have some misunderstandings about the ocean. From this, we think that many people in inland cities actually have the same misunderstandings, so we can use the aquarium in the city as a medium to spread marine knowledge.

By speaking with a large number of experts and educators, we have gained the following insightful conclusions

‘In

a Flight of Starlings’

INSPIRITION Research decentralization communal intelligence

BIOLOGICAL “ALGORITHM” ADVANTAGE

Conclusion of The Testing:

In 2021 Nobel Prize winner George Parisi saw flocks of starlings flying over a train station in Rome without a unified command but able to change shape freely as a whole. He found that changes in one starling could affect all the starlings within a meter of it, so that they could maintain their stability while ensuring that individual information was transmitted efficiently within the group. His study of starlings in turn inspired him to make seminal contributions to the theory of complex systems, which led to the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Conclusion of The Testing

The application of algorithms to different scales of emergency response provides room for imagination.

With reference to starling flock behavior, key location information data and weight information levels are extracted as data inputs to the algorithm to build the starling numerical model and to observe the phenomenon of leader turnover in the flock and the conduction of information in steering.

Build a numerical model of a starling by entering the code into Rhion. Adjust different parameters to observe changes in the model's response over time and space at different scales. Integrate with theory to observe the aggregation and dispersion of starling flocks over time and how the flocks react after encountering different colliders.
