Sterling Heights can quickly become a regular summer destination with popular parks, splash pads, a FREE Nature Center, a growing list of family destinations and their signature Sterlingfest in July - there are lots of places to find family fun.

John Ball Zoo + Meijer Gardens
Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park and John Ball Zoo are true Grand Rapids must-visits for families. Both are beautiful, expansive destinations— so wear comfortable shoes, pack the stroller or wagon, and plan to stay awhile. At Meijer Gardens, families can wander through stunning outdoor gardens, discover worldclass sculptures, and explore the indoor conservatory. Grab a bite to eat in downtown New Baltimore and then spend some time at the sandy beach. The shallow water is good for littles and there is a modern playground designed with younger kids in mind next to the shore.

Crosswinds Marsh Nature Preserve (New Boston) is one of the most picturesque parks in the area. Wander across wooden boardwalks that stretch over wetlands, connecting small islands and leading into wooded trails. It’s a peaceful, scenic spot perfect for wildlife spotting and photos.

Red Oaks Waterpark
I took my older two to Red Oaks Waterpark for the first time last year, and they loved it—so much that they’ve been asking to go back ever since! This summer, I’m excited to bring my youngest (age 4) along to splash around in the spray park and float the lazy river, while the big kids tackle the waterslides and wave pool. It’s the perfect spot for fun at every age!
Cranbrook Gardens
Checking out the Cranbrook Gardens was a 2025 highlight! This was our first time visiting, it was the most beautiful way to get some steps in and spend some time in nature. Plus, it’s FREE!
Fowler Family Fair
The Fowlerville Fair is your go-to for classic, down-to-earth summer fun. From the midway and animal exhibits to tractor pulls, there’s something for everyone—but this year feels extra special. Kids will proudly showcase their 4-H projects they’ve been working on all year, making it a can’t-miss, feel-good family outing.
Livonia Spree
A local tradition, the Livonia Spree brings a week’s worth of fun to our hometown. The carnival has rides for all ages, horse rides, puppy races, the best treats and food trucks and special events each day. You’ll find us at pizza night, running the family-friendly 5k, and staying up past bedtime for the drone and fireworks shows. There are lots of carnivals that happen throughout the summer, but the Spree is extra special.
Guernsey Ice Cream (Northville)
Guernsey is a summertime staple in our house. We make sure to visit at least once a month during the warm weather months. While there, we stock up on our favorite ice cream flavors that we can’t find in stores. The best part about our trips are the giant rocks that the kids climb all over once their sugar rush hits - IYKYK.
Comerica Park
We love watching the Tigers play at Comerica every summer and this year my youngest will be old enough to enjoy the game with us! Between the carousel, ferris wheel, and running the bases there is plenty for both kids to love. Nothing beats a day out in Detroit, watching the game and enjoying a ballpark hot dog with the family!
