District proposes $142 mill budget, faces costly mandate

BY KASSARA MCELROY The Garden City Board of Education met on Tuesday, March 10th for work and special sessions, presenting residents with a detailed look at the proposed 2026-27 district budget. The budget included a sobering feasibility study on the state-mandated transition to electric school buses, and progress updates on the capital improvements underway across district buildings.

The Budget Proposal

The district’s proposed 2026-27 budget of $142,385,117 represents a 3.36% increase over the current year, with a tax levy increase of 2.98%, or $3,414,416, within the state’s allowable cap. The figures were presented by Dr. Kusum Sinha, superintendent of schools, and Dana DiCapua, assistant superintendent for business and finance. Last Thursday the Garden City Village Board of Trustees approved contracts to address two capital needs, key components of planned upgrades to Cluett Hall, adjacent to St. Paul’s main building. The Board approved a purchase of $15,995 for new LED lighting for Cluett Hall’s interior, from vendor Musco Sports Lighting LLC based in Iowa. Funding for the purchase was

The Garden City Board of Trustees set a public hearing for its upcoming meeting on Thursday night, March 19th beginning at 7:30 p.m., on an amendment to Chapter 38 of the Village Code regarding residential subdivisions. Village Attorney Gary Fishberg offered details at the last meeting on March 5th, and Garden City’s deputy mayor offered insights into a thorough review process and several considerations for neighbors of any future proposed subdivisions. “Currently, we have a provision in the municipal code dealing with the Planning Commission which exempts minor subdivisions from a significant review.
