Town honors veterans for Town announces community service fall pickleball tournament
Supervisor Saladino (center) and his colleagues in government, including Town Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilman Tom Hand, Councilman Steve Labriola, Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato and Legislator James Kennedy, recognize this year’s recipients of the 2026 Town of Oyster Bay Veterans’ Awards at a special ceremony. The Town of Oyster Bay recently honored veterans and veteran volunteers at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Salute to America held at John Burns Park. Recipients were recognized as Veteran Volunteer of the Year and Friend of a Veteran Volunteer. “This year’s wonderful honorees have involved themselves in numerous veteran activities and events and perform many diverse services on behalf of
America’s fighting men and women,” said Supervisor Saladino. “They are hometown heroes and role models, and are truly worthy of tonight’s honor. I look forward to their continued service in the years ahead.” Recipients of the Town’s Veterans Volunteer of the Year Award included Robert James Ryan of Syosset and Jason Lederer of Syosset. Robert James Ryan helps
veterans who cannot perform certain tasks on their own. Through Cooking for LI Veterans, he helps veterans who can no longer cook for themselves. Through Vets out of the Rough, he helps disabled veterans learn to play golf, and through the White Cane Group, he assists blind veterans go fishing and participate in other recreational activities. Due to popular demand, the Town of Oyster Bay has announced that the Town will host an additional Pickleball Social Play Tournament this fall. The two-day long tournament will take place from September 12 through September 13, and feature brackets of doubles games for players ages 18 and up, and of all skill levels. Categories are divided into men’s, women’s, and mixed, and under 40, over 40, and over 60. “Pickleball has quickly become one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation, and the Town of Oyster Bay is proud to lead the way in creating opportunities for residents to enjoy
this fun game,” Supervisor Saladino said. “So grab your paddle and a partner, and start warming up for this exciting, social event.” Registration will be available at www.oysterbaytown.com/ sports. Town resident teams can register starting July 23 at 9:00 a.m. for a fee of $40 (teams with 2 residents) or $50 (teams with 1 resident.) Non-residents can register starting July 30 at 9:00 a.m. for a fee of $50. All team members must provide a valid photo ID with address and DOB on tournament day. Arrest after altercation
Nassau County Police arrested a Syosset man after an altercation on Saturday, August 1, at 11:27 p.m. According to detectives, officers responded to a home in Syosset for a burglary. Upon arrival, police say they determined that Jason He, 56, of Syosset unlawfully entered a residence through an unlocked rear door. Once inside, they say that He became involved in a
disturbance with a 57-year-old male victim and a 60-year-old female. According to police, the argument escalated into a physical altercation, during which the He struck the male victim in the chest with a chair. Jason He was charged with Burglary 1st Degree, Attempted Assault 2nd Degree, Menacing 2nd Degree, Harassment 2nd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree.
