Town honors golfers for saving a life

The Town of Oyster Bay recently honored a Town of Oyster Bay Golf Pro, as well as three fellow golfers for their remarkable actions that saved the life of a Syosset resident. On November 1, 2025, Carl Badean suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while playing golf on the 16th hole at the Town’s course, during a lesson. Carl’s golf instructor, Town of Oyster Bay Golf Pro Nicholas Mattia, immediately took action and called for help. Three fellow golfers, Sal LoStrappo, Mike Angelone and Rich LeWarn, who had also been golfing that day, dropped everything and ran quickly to assist. Theycalled 911, alerted staff to the situation, performed CPR and rescue breathing, and administered the AED, saving Carl’s life. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “At one point, Carl’s heart had stopped completely — and because of their brave and selfless actions, his heart was restarted before emergency medical personnel arrived to take over. These men, ordinary people, acted with extraordinary courage and heroism and saved Carl’s life. Their selfless actions exemplify the best in all of us: kindness, compassion, and the ability to act decisively and courageously when fellow citizens are in need.” Carl, a husband, father, and grandfather, has made a full recovery and is expected to be back out on the greens this summer.
