New farmers market Camhi, Khan challenge incumbents for BOE seats opens in Syosset BY GEORGE HABER
Two mothers, parents of children in Jericho schools, are seeking to win seats on the School Board currently held by Sam Perlman and Jennifer Vartanov, who are running for re-election. Jenn Camhi and Shewar Khan are residents of West Birchwood. Camhi who moved to Jericho after living for many years in California and Arizona, said she is interested to serve on the board because she believes the Jericho School System is committed to producing a student who is “not just academically strong, but who is a good person.” "I'm committed to maintaining that reputation," she said. Camhi is a doctor of physical thera-
py and has treated many professional athletes and worked with teams in baseball, football and soccer. Working with her father, who owned a boatyard that serviced various types of water craft, she said she served as a “hands-on” worker, being involved in repairing boats, handling finances and working with service providers. “I know I can bring a valuable, realworld perspective to the operation of the School Board and the district,” she said. She said her candidacy is supported by the Jericho Teachers Association . Shewar Khan has regularly attended Jericho School Board meetings and held offices in PTAs in Jericho. Born in See page 12

Nassau County Legislature Deputy Minority Leader Arnold W. Drucker (D – Plainview) celebrated the grand opening of the Syosset Farmers Market on Saturday, May 11. Located outside the American Legion Hall at 68 Berry Hill Road in Syosset, the new weekly staple is a showcase for dozens of vendors offering fresh local produce; baked
goods and prepared foods; gift items like organic soaps, wax candles, cutlery and pottery — and just in time for Mother’s Day, an assortment of beautiful flowers. The market is set to be open every Saturday through Oct. 26 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. “Not only do farmers markets bring the freshest and healthiest local pro-
duce right into our backyards, they also provide entrepreneurs with an important launching pad to elevate their businesses to new heights,” Deputy Minority Leader Drucker said. “I encourage everyone to support this wonderful new endeavor and make the Syosset Farmers Market a new part of your family’s Saturday morning routine.”
