Jericho Board asks: County observes International Holocaust Remembrance Day Is PD course a bad 'SEED'? BY GEORGE HABER
Legislator Drucker pictured with Chabad of Mineola’s Rabbi Anchelle Perl outside the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building on Thursday, Jan. 27. Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) joined religious leaders and his colleagues in government on Thursday, Jan. 27 to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day. At sundown, the dome of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building was illuminated yellow in accordance with the United Nations General Assembly observance of the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camps.
“On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the victims of the systemic, state-sponsored genocide in which 6 million Jewish men, women, and children and 11 million more innocent people were slaughtered,” Legislator Drucker said. “Let us honor their memory by recommitting ourselves to educating future generations about the evil atrocities that occurred, and by pledging to confront bigotry, ignorance and hatred wherever it continues to lurk.”

A controversial professional development program for teachers sparked strong criticism from Jericho School Board members at the monthly meeting Jan. 20th. The program, taken by some Jericho teachers and taught to middle school students as an elective, is based on The National SEED Project on Inlusive Curriculum created by Peggy McKintosh of Wellesley College, a feminist activist who is a proponent of the concept of “white privilege,” which some critics have called antiwhite racism. Jericho Schools Superintendent Hank Grishman and a teacher who has taken the professional development course and spoke with students who have gone through it, said the course, called “Seedlings,” has no racist overtones, and teaches diversity, tolerance and acceptance. Board newcomers Jennifer Vartanov and Sam Perlman argued that any link to the parent organization of the SEED
Project shoudl be eliminated. Grishman said he agreed it could be appropriate to change he name of the program, making it a “home grown” cross-cultural communication oriented course. One parent said he thought the course was “unnecessary” since the Jericho School District is already a multicultural once in which students routinely show their fellow students “diversity, acceptances and tolerance.” Grishman added that he has attended classes and found no evidence of bias toward any group. In his Superintendent’s Report, Grishman said the current enrollment in ther school district is 3185 students. This is the largest enrollment in the district’s history. He also noted that the mandatory mask wearing of students and faculty has resulted in a relatively low absenteeism rate, and that the district is waiting on delivery of two more shipments of Covid test kits for distribution to families as well as staff and faculty.

The Town of Oyste Bay has reminded residents that the First Half of the 2022 General Tax Levy was due on January 1, but can be paid without penalty through February 10. Please be certain to sign your check, payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot, and phone number on the check. “Homeowners should note that this is the second General tax bill mailed under former County Executive Laura Curran’s reassessment. While the General tax bill includes amounts for the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County and special districts, the Town of Oyster Bay did not raise taxes in 2022. New York State Laws allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” added Receiver Pravato. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to January 1st. Don’t delay, make your payment before February 10th and ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.” Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tax Office has been fully operational. Both indoor access and outdoor walk up windows are available at Town Hall North (74 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay) and at Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa) daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. to assist residents and accept payments with either a check, cash or credit card.* On February

Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato will host a free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshop for residents looking to acquire information on how to challenge their 2023-2024 property tax assessments. The workshop will be held in-person on Tuesday, February 15, at 10 a.m. at Oyster Bay Town Hall, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. “While Nassau County determines your value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as a homeowner to challenge your assessment. Remember, your assessment can only be lowered as the result of a challenge – it can never be raised – and this workshop helps you challenge for free,” said Receiver of Taxes Pravato. “If you are a homeowner who disagrees with the assessed value of your property, I invite you to attend this Property Tax Assessment Workshop, as the property tax grievance deadline of March 1 is
approaching.” In January, Nassau County notified residents of their home’s tentative assessed value for the 2023/2024 school tax period and the 2024 general tax period. Any residents who did not receive the notice may view it online at www.mynassauproperty.com or contact their County Legislator. At the workshop, Receiver of Taxes Pravato will answer questions and show residents how to use online tools to file an “Application for Correction of Assessment” online or via mail. There is no requirement to pay a law firm or agency to file a grievance. For those unable to attend the workshop, Receiver of Taxes Pravato offers an online video at www.oysterbaytown. com/grievancevideo. For more information on the Free Property Tax Grievance Workshop, please call (516) 624-6380. For more information on your property, visit www.LRV.nassaucountny.gov.

The Lee Avenue Elementary School helped to keep people a little warmer this winter season by having students donate coats and jackets to a local charitable organization called “One Warm Coat.” Students, teachers and staff members contributed to the weeklong drive and were able to collect over fifty coats for the less fortunate. The coat drive began on January 10 and concluded on Friday, January 15. Marissa Pressler, school psychologist at Lee Avenue, helped to coordinate the coat drive at a site-based team meeting earlier this year. “I had heard about this local nonprofit organization called One Warm Coat during a Girl Scouts coat drive in November,” said Pressler. “I thought it would be a great initiative for our students to get involved with, so I brought up the idea to fellow staff members at our monthly site-based meeting.” She said that working in a school and with her site-based team, she saw the importance of families having coats during the winter season. “I have seen the great need that families here have for coats and jackets, and wanted the students to understand the importance of helping others in need,
the importance of promoting volunteerism and environmental sustainability,” said Pressler. Students who brought in coats during the week were encouraged to include a note of kindness in the pocket of each donated coat. In addition to supporting a worthwhile cause, the charitable effort helped students recognize “Lee-O’s Laws,” which are posted friendly reminders for students at the school. “Lee-O’s Laws are something we’ve been doing for a while at the school to remind students to be mindful, respectful and kind to others,” said Pressler. Quinn Valme, a student at Lee Avenue, said she was happy to take part in the coat drive initiative because it helped others in need. “I really liked donating the coats because it is something good to do and I like helping others,” said Valme. The charitable efforts will continue at Lee Avenue on Friday, February 11, as the school will partner with a local organization called “P.S I Love You Day!” Students are encouraged to wear the color purple to help support mental health awareness and anti bullying initiatives.

Jericho High School senior’s project earns him Regeneron semis berth ENERGY EFFICIENCY
KNOW HOW
BY GARY SIMEONE
Ethan Wang, a Jericho High School senior, spent three years researching his project on the different risk factors of Alzheimer’s disease. His hard work paid off and he was awarded a qualifying berth in the Regeneron Science contest semifinals. “I was incredibly happy about qualifying for the Regeneron semifinals,” said Wang. “Regeneron is one of the most prestigious competitions for high school researchers. Even as a sophomore in the Jericho research program, becoming a Regeneron scholar was a dream of mine. My project for Regeneron was a culmination of three years of work, and to be recognized for
my hard work and perseverance means so much for me.” Wang’s project investigated Alzheimer’s disease, and the way it effects various parts inside the body. “I wanted to look at the effect of several risk factors on Alzheimer’s, including on copper levels, the immune system and the gut. My study was the first to examine the interactions of all three factors together.” The senior conducted a computational test for gene relationships and an experiment within a lab studying gene expression. “I found that all three elements are associated with the gut-brain relationship that can lead to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Wang.

He received a commemorative bowling pin from his coach, June Dvorak. Photo courtesy of the Bethpage Union Free School District Bethpage High School senior Brian Lunetto was one pin short of a perfect game during his team’s match against Massapequa High School on Jan. 6. Two weeks later, he achieved perfection as he bowled a 300 on Jan. 19. “It was kind of bittersweet, because it was my last match and I’ve been doing this for six years,” Lunetto said. “Like any other match, I was just trying to go out there and compete, and I was really focused on helping our team win the conference.” Lunetto said he realized how accurate his shots were during the fourth or fifth frame. Once he found a rhythm, he said he was determined to bowl a 300. “Those first few shots just looked and felt really good, so I kept trying to repeat that,” he said. “I didn’t want to
recreate another 299.” According to bowling coach June Dvorak, Lunetto was the only player in Nassau County to notch a perfect game this season. “He’s fabulous, and he’s an incredible student as well,” Dvorak said. Once the match was over, Lunetto said he felt relieved to cap off an amazing performance. He also said it was a special moment to receive a bowling pin from his coach, which marked his perfect game. “I was finally able to take it all in and celebrate with my team,” Lunetto said. “It was great being able to leave a legacy behind. Winning the conference was one of my goals, so this just fulfills all of the dreams that I had coming into the season.”

Bethpage’s John F. Kennedy Middle School’s students put their STEM skills to the test during the school’s Paper Chain Challenge on Jan. 14. Students worked on their paper chains in the school’s library during their lunch periods. Each student had 15 minutes to create the longest possible paper chain
using one piece of construction paper. Chains were later placed next to each other to determine the top three in each period. Like many STEM challenges, the Paper Chain Challenge pushed students to use critical thinking skills as well as math and engineering skills.

Green Thumb Awards 2022 BY JEFF RUGG Winners of the 2022 Green Thumb Awards were chosen by an independent panel of National Garden Bureau (NGB) members who are garden writers, breeders, retailers, brokers and growers. The winners are selected based on their uniqueness, technological innovation, ability to solve a gardening problem or provide a gardening opportunity, and potential appeal to gardeners. The awards are sponsored by the NGB, a nonprofit organization that exists to educate and inspire home gardeners. This year there is one winner in each category of annual flower, perennial flower, vegetable, shrub and hard goods or tools. Hummingbird Falls is a first of its kind in the Salvia genus. It has a trailing, hanging basket shape. Salvias are known for being heat tolerant and for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. A hanging basket of this salvia is almost as good as hanging a hummingbird feeder. This plant can be planted in flower beds and on garden walls. Sedums are very popular perennials because they are drought tolerant. There are many species and varieties that have
water-storing leaves that come in green, yellow, pink and blue-gray. Some species bloom in tall stalks of attractive flowers and others never seem to bloom. Some plants are low, ground-cover types and others are tall and bushy. The perennial flower winner this year is a tall sedum with an unusual color. Back in Black can grow to 2 feet tall and has a nearly black leaf color that is a striking contrast to other perennials in the garden. The late summer flowers are deep garnet red with cream petals. Peppers and tomatoes with stripes are the “in” thing right now. The vegetable winner, the Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry sweet pepper, is awesome. It has variegated leaves of green and white, but the fruit are what will make your gardening friends envious. The green fruit start out with white stripes. Then they change to green with orange stripes and finally, chocolate-green and bright red stripes. Of course, a pretty pepper is no good if it doesn’t taste good. This is a sweet bell pepper with a crisp texture that can be eaten at any stage of color ripeness. The crossbreeding of shrubs in an attempt to get improved varieties takes patience and practice. It can take decades to get new plants worthy of being
propagated and sold. A North American native that needed some improvement is the Sweetshrub. It should be a good garden plant as it is deer resistant, grows in wet or clay soils, grows in hardiness zones 4 through 9 and can grow in sun or shade. As the name implies it should have a pleasant fragrance. I have tested the smell of many sweetshrub flowers and have never found one to be fragrant. Tim Wood of Spring Meadow nursery spent 18 years refining the sweetshrub to get the new Simply Scentsational sweetshrub. The blooms are described as powerfully fragrant with the scent of pineapple and bubblegum. If it is true, then I want one. Each flower is uniquely shaped and a dark maroon color. It is hard to describe GardenSoxx. It is a garden soil container that is shaped like a large, long sock. You fill the sock with compost, and it forms a tube of whatever length you want. The standard sizes are from 50 to 500 feet long, but you can cut it to fit in your garden. There are three diameters available: 5-inch for small plants like herbs, 8-inch for most garden plants and 12-inch for large plants like tomatoes and squash. The benefits are enormous. This container provides the good drainage and
good aeration that many garden soils lack. GardenSoxx can be used in any garden style and even on temporarily vacant lots. There are no weeds to deal with, and they can be used with drip irrigation systems for easy watering. Email questions to Jeff Rugg at info@ greenerview.com. Repeat After Me: ‘SSI Is Not Social Security’ BY TOM MARGENAU If I had a million dollars, I’d buy commercial time at the upcoming Super Bowl and run an ad that says, in big bold letters, “SSI is not Social Security.” I have written dozens of past columns about this topic. But I’ve just got to do so again. It seems to me that just about everyone in this country confuses the Supplemental Security Income program with the Social Security program. To clarify, let’s start with some background. I’m sure everybody knows what Social Security is. You get a Social Security number, you work, you pay Social Security taxes, and one day you, and possibly some of your dependents, collect Social Security retirement benefits. Or you become disabled before reaching retirement age and you, and possibly some of your dependents, get Social Security disability benefits. Or you die and your widow or widower and/or minor children collect Social Security survivor benefits. But only a small percentage of Americans really know what Supplemental Security Income is. To introduce it, here is a short history lesson. Back before the early 1970s, there were hundreds of different welfare programs in the country. Sometimes states administered welfare programs. Other times, counties had their own welfare programs. And in some places, cities or other jurisdictions had their own welfare programs. It was a mess. Some officials in the Nixon administration had a good idea. They decided to federalize and standardize this hodgepodge of welfare programs into one national program. But then they had two bad ideas. The first bad idea: They gave this new program to the Social Security Administration to run. On the one hand, I suppose it made sense. The SSA had a network of field offices around the country, and it had the computer infrastructure necessary to manage a big, national government benefits program. On the other hand, they messed up a nice, clean government operation used to dealing mostly with grandpas and grandmas and saddled it with the task of running a big, messy welfare system. And their second bad idea was the name. Some people somewhere in the Nixon administration decided to call the new program Supplemental Security Income. I understand what they were trying to do. They wanted to remove the negative connotations of the word “welfare” from the minds of potential program beneficiaries. But this act of political correctness has led to problems ever since. So, they called the new program Supplemental Security Income, and they gave the program to the Social Securi-
ty Administration to run. And almost everyone back then in the 1970s, and almost everyone still today, got the impression that Supplemental Security Income is some kind of supplemental Social Security benefit. It’s not. SSI is a federal welfare program that has absolutely nothing to do with Social Security other than the fact that it happens to be managed by the Social Security Administration. SSI payments are funded out of general tax revenues -- NOT Social Security taxes. Gosh, how I wish they would have called SSI something like the Federal Welfare Program. And gosh, how I wish they would have created a new federal agency to run it and called it something like the Federal Welfare Benefits Administration. Anyway, here are some examples just from this week’s emails that give you an idea of all the confusion caused by the misnamed program. Q: In a recent column, you wrote that people getting Social Security Income are getting welfare. I beg to differ. Social Security is NOT welfare. How could you say that? A: You misunderstood what I wrote. The column you refer to was explaining the Supplemental Security Income program. SSI is a federal welfare program that is managed by the Social Security Administration. And in that column, I said that many people confuse SSI with Social Security. And I specifically wrote that lots of folks (obviously including you) mistakenly think that SSI stands for Social Security Income. It does not. To repeat, SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income, which is a welfare program. Q: In a past column, you said that someone getting disability benefits (and this is a direct quote) “could inherit a million dollars and still be eligible for disability benefits.” I recently inherited a lot less than that (about $100,000), and it got me into all kinds of trouble with my SSI disability. I’m jumping through lots of hoops now trying to keep my benefits. A: You misunderstood what I wrote. In that past column, I was referring to someone getting Social Security disability benefits. Social Security is not a welfare program. You could be a millionaire and still get Social Security, whether it’s a retirement benefit or a disability benefit or a survivor benefit. But you are not getting Social Security disability. You are getting SSI disability. And to repeat, SSI is a welfare program. And as a general rule, someone who inherits $100,000 doesn’t need welfare. I’m not a real expert on the SSI program, but you may be able to set up something called a “special needs trust” that lets you keep your SSI checks. Those may be the “hoops” you are try-
ing to jump through. And here is one final tidbit that further shows how these two programs can get confused. The Social Security disability program is frequently referred to as SSDI, which stands for Social Security disability insurance. And the SSI disability program is usually called SSID. So finally, repeat after me. SSI is a welfare program. It is not a Social Security program. SSI does not stand for
Social Security Income. It stands for Supplemental Security Income. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has a book with all the answers. It’s called “Social Security -- Simple and Smart.” You can find the book at www.creators.com/books, or look for it on Amazon or other book outlets. COPYRIGHT 2022 CREATORS.COM

Buying a home in a low inventory market BY PHILIP A. RAICES Purchasing a home today has been the most challenging in as many years as I can remember. Low inventory, competition w/other buyers and bidding wars and much higher prices has created a lot stressed. However, I have seen many who are looking for their perfect home whether it be their first or move up space and location. I have had numerous conversations w/clients and try to discuss their specific “needs and want.” I explain that they should go through a trade-off process and determine what is really important and what is not and most importantly to stretch their budget as need be. Use common sense and do not go overboard, unless they currently have more than ample funds and feel very confident with their current and future earnings. The other option is to possibly consider a basic fixer upper that they can transform into their “dream home.” This will require hiring a contractor(s) and possible supervision and sufficient time to complete. This is obviously not for everyone, but can be the most beneficial if done properly. One must act quickly when a potential home is located and not wait until the weekend to go out to see it as the possibility it might already have an accepted offer by then. It may take some time to find the right place and location, but timing is everything and if you are lucky it can be worth your while. This could build and add value and appreciation in right after the renovation is completed adding to their current and future wealth. Even with the current high prices, there are still states like Richmond and Virginia Beach, Virginia, Tampa and Orlando, Florida and Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and other
locations where owning is 5%-28% more economical than renting. However, making a decision to leave and move to another state is a monumental and huge undertaking and requires at least year or more to plan, unless a job is secured in advance and then decisions have to be made more expeditiously. The $64,000 question is when will normal inventory be achieved and available? Due to the still strong demand for housing and still historically low interest rates, even though they have increased over the last 4-6 weeks, it’s going to take some time for more availability to come into the market. My guess is possibly within 2-4 years. Substantial increases in home prices and now higher interest rates have also eliminated more buyers who were maxed out on their budgets. The last implosion in 2008 saw inventory grow to 11 months (the time it would take to sell all those homes) and sales severely slowed causing prices to decrease through 2011. With current historically high prices, doing an inspection becomes tantamount and mandatory, in finding problems, unless you are a contractor or extremely experienced in fixer-uppers.” Initially, it will be the most crucial and advantageous investment you should consider, especially if you have limited expertise. You don’t want costly surprises after the fact and don’t want to get stuck with a potential “money pit.
Having access to your local MLS via a Realtor will provide you faster access to the limited number of homes compared to Zillow. com, Realtor.com or any other sites as we are first to get the signed listings for the properties and then they are aggregated and sent over to all the other sites. We have a contact prospect matching system that sets up our clients on an auto feed first before any other sites and goes directly to our clients so they don’t miss anything that comes out for sale. Consulting and guiding buyers is so key and even more critical in today’s competitive low inventory market. We are all very busy either working from home or on the job trying to earn a living, while still dealing daily with the Omicron virus, and all the protocols involved. Using a buyer’s agent today to represent them can be the most beneficial as they will legally have your best interest in mind (and not the seller, as the listing agent does). He o r she must provide w/o limitation the following fiduciary duties to you as the buyer: 1.) Reasonable care 2.) Undivided loyalty 3.) Confidentiality 4.) Full disclosure 5.) Full disclosure 6.) Obedience 7.) Duty to account Having a professional Realtor team up and assist you in the process of searching and finding you a home will potentially enable you to not experience going through the “FOMO” syndrome (fear of missing out) on the one
home that you would consider buying. Philip A. Raices is the owner/Broker of Turn Key Real Estate at 3 Grace Ave Suite 180 in Great Neck. Walking and Diabetes BY CHARLYN FARGO Most of us wish for an easy fix for our health issues -- a magic pill to lose weight or a magic way to cook vegetables that we love. And then along comes a study, recently published in the February 2022 issue of the journal Diabetes Care, that finds we can walk to prevent diabetes. The study found that the more steps you take, and the more intensely you walk, the lower your odds of getting Type 2 diabetes. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University studied more than 4,800 participants who were women aged 65 and older. None had diabetes. All lived independently. Participants wore a device on their hip that recorded the number of steps they took 24 hours a day for a week. Participants’ health was monitored for up to seven years. Of the 4,800 women, 8% devel-
oped diabetes during that time. On average, participants took 3,729 steps per day, of which 1,875 were light-intensity steps and 1,854 were vigorous-intensity steps (steps that cause you to breathe a little heavier). Researchers said that for every 1,000 steps participants took per day, results showed a 6% lower diabetes risk. If older adults were to take 2,000 more steps every day (in addition to what they were already doing), they might expect a 12% reduction in diabetes risk, according to study co-author Alexis Garduno in a UCSD news release. Here’s the bottom line: If 500,000 older individuals who are newly diagnosed with diabetes every year would increase their steps by 2,000 per day and the 12% figure is correct, Garduno said 60,000 people each year would not suffer from diabetes. This study goes along with a recommendation from the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services for at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week; once you’ve started walking, keep it up daily.
Q and A
Q: Do omega-6 fatty acids cause inflammation? A: No, intake of omega-6 fatty acids doesn’t cause inflammation; in fact, they are anti-inflammatory. Omega-6 fatty acids, called linoleic acid, are found in nuts, seeds and plant oils such as sunflower, safflower, soybean, canola and corn. Because linoleic acid can’t be synthesized by the body, it must be consumed in the diet. Besides being anti-inflammatory, omega-6 fatty acids help lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides as well as helping to lower blood glucose. Q: What is Coenzyme Q10? A: Coenzyme Q10 is a compound that plays a critical role in energy production
within the cells of the body. It is synthesized in most tissues in humans and our bodies naturally produce it. Dietary sources include meat, fish, poultry, soybeans, nuts and whole grains. It functions as an antioxidant and may help with blood pressure and heart health. CoQ10 is a nonprescription dietary supplement. It is not a vitamin or mineral. It’s generally regarded as safe; however, it can produce side effects of nausea, diarrhea and loss of appetite in doses over 200 milligrams per day. Like any supplement, it can also interfere with other medications. It’s always best to check with your doctor before taking any supplement. The Doctor Is In BY TRACY BECKERMAN “Oh, no!” I exclaimed to my husband. “My giant yucca plant is sick.” He glanced over from the couch. “How can you tell? “See how the tips of all these leaves are turning brown and there are spots on them?” I said. “This is very bad.” “Can you save it?” he asked. I nodded. “I’m not sure,” I said. “It’s critical. It needs to go into triage so I can assess the extent of the disease.” “So... you’re, like, a plant surgeon?” he asked. “Yes, yes I am,” I said. I quickly got into my surgical scrubs (dirty jeans and kneepads) and grabbed my surgical tools (trowel, clippers, fungal spray) and went to work on the patient. “OK, we need to cut off all the infected leaves and then run an EKG, CBC,
ABG, get a leaf CT, and root X-ray,” I shouted to my ER nurse, aka my husband. “I have no idea what you’re saying to me,” he replied. “Look,” I said as I discovered roots growing outside the pot. “This patient is root-bound.” “That’s bad?” he said. “Yes! We’re going to have to amputate the pot.” “What?” “Uh-oh, we’ve lost rhythm. Let’s start stem compressions.” “Stem compressions?” he wondered. “Yes. Get the defibrillator ready.” “We have a defibrillator?” he said. “Of course,” I said. “Can someone please put a pulse oximeter on that leaf?” I looked around and yelled. “Is someone else here?” he wondered, also looking around. I paused and felt a branch. “OK, we
have a pulse.” “Honey, do you actually know what you’re doing?” “I do. I watch a lot of gardening shows and medical dramas. CAN WE PAGE ORTHO FOR A CONSULT?” I yelled out. “We have an orthopedist in the apartment?” he said. “Of course not. That’s why I said to page one,” I said, “OK, this yucca needs a tourniquet and two liters of MiracleGro, stat.” My husband looked at me like I had two heads, but I was very serious about my work. This plant had made it through three house moves and an infestation of fungus gnats, and I was not going to let it go without a fight. It was the patriarch of all the other plants I had acquired during the pandemic. We had even named it Zeus, after the king of Mt. Olympus and father of the gods.
Sadly, even the mighty get root rot from time to time. “OK, I see the problem,” I announced. “The soil wasn’t draining because the pot was too small, and it created an environment for fungus to grow.” “Is it terminal?” my husband asked. “No,” I said. “It just needs to be repotted.” “That’s it?” he said. “Yup.” “So, what was all the drama for?” he wondered. I smiled. “Higher ratings.”

The Celestial River BY DENNIS MAMMANA Week of January 30 -February 5, 2022 You can stand outside every night of the year and you won’t see stars more brilliant than those of winter. Most remarkable is that during the early evening hours right now you can find three-quarters of the 50 most brilliant stars in the entire sky. It’s too bad so much of the population lives under severe light pollution, and that most people don’t venture out to explore the amazing nighttime sights. Those who love the sky, however, are a different lot. When stargazers peer skyward at dusk on cold winter evenings they find it hard to ignore Orion, the hunter, standing stoically over the southeastern horizon. Even those who just “accidentally” glance upward as they race from their cars to their nice, warm homes almost instantly notice the four bright stars that outline a rectangle and three more that trace a straight line in its center. While Orion unquestionably represents the season’s most attention-grabbing star grouping, it’s not the only constellation in that area of the sky. In fact, one of the longest of all constellations begins near the foot of the great hunter. Its name is Eridanus, the river. In Greek mythology, Eridanus is the river in which young Phaethon crashed
after his failed attempt to fly the Chariot of the Sun, but no one knows exactly which river Eridanus was supposed to represent. Some claim it’s the Tigris or the Euphrates, while others suggest it might be the river Po or possibly even the mighty Nile. Finding this sinuous string of relatively faint stars isn’t all that difficult. First, locate the lower right star of Orion (Rigel). Next, look just above and to its right for the fainter star that marks the “head” of the celestial river. If you’ve got a dark, un-light polluted sky and a fairly low southern horizon you should be able to trace much of the river as it meanders to the west and south. Because Eridanus lies so far south, stargazers in the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere can see only a portion of it; if you live in middle or high latitudes you might be able to see only one-third or half of it. Those living in more southerly locations, however, will see much more. Only folks who do their stargazing near or south of the equator can see the entire constellation as it meanders almost all the way toward the south celestial pole. Though the constellation of Eridanus is rather obscure, one of its stars has captured the imagination of astronomers and science fiction authors alike. Its name is Epsilon Eridani -- a slightly orange star appearing about midway down the constellation’s winding stellar string. It was back in 1960 that scientists pro-
posed that, because the star lies relatively nearby -- only about 10.5 light years from Earth -- aiming a radio telescope in its direction might detect signals from an intelligent civilization orbiting nearby. And that’s exactly what astronomers did; unfortunately, they have so far received no signals of great interest.
They have not stopped their monitoring programs, however, for today we know that Epsilon Eridani has at least one Jupiter-like planet in orbit around it -- and who knows how many others! Visit Dennis Mammana at dennismammana.com. COPYRIGHT 2022 CREATORS.COM

TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldier’s and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject
to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act (FIRREA), 12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et. seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The rate of interest and penalty which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount from which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale. Furthermore, as to the bidding, 1. The bidder(s) agree that they will not work with any other bidder(s) to increase, maintain or stabilize interest rates or collaborate with any other bidder(s) to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the random number generator in the event of a tie bid(s) on a tax certificate. Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create
an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding strategy that will result in a rotational award of tax certificates. 2. The tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) bid, will be arrived at independently and without direct or indirect consultation, communication or agreement with any other bidder and that the tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) to be bid, have not been disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder, and will not be disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder prior to the close of bidding. No attempt has been made or will be made to, directly or indirectly, induce any other bidder to refrain from bidding on any tax certificate, to submit complementary bids, or to submit bids at specific interest rates. 3. The bids to be placed by the Bidder will be made in good faith and not pursuant to any direct or indirect, agreement or discussion with, or inducement from, any other bidder to submit a complementary or other noncompetitive bid. 4. If it is determined that the bidder(s) have violated any of these bid requirements then their bid shall be voided and if they were the successful bidder the lien and any deposits made, in connection with, said bid shall be forfeited. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety
per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase be of no further effect. Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding strategy that will result in a rotational award of tax certificates. 4.
Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding strategy that will result in a rotational award of tax certificates. No attempt has been
made or will be made to, directly or indirectly, induce any other bidder to refrain from bidding on any tax certificate, to submit complementary bids, or to submit bids at specific interest rates. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien.
