Town seeks volunteers for shell recycling at festival
NCPD: DWI crash kills 30-year-old A 30 year-old man was killed in a crash in Hicksville that police say was caused by a drunk driver. According to police, on Saturday, September 21, at 11:19 p.m. a 2014 Subaru was traveling eastbound on Prospect Ave prior to making a left turn northbound on Cantiague Rock Road. The Subaru struck a 2005 Honda traveling westbound on Prospect Avenue. As a result of the collision, the Subaru caught fire and became fully engulfed. The driver, Jannai Allen, age 30, was trapped and pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver of the Honda was transported to an area hospital for his injuries. According to police, the driver, Miguel Nolasco, 42, of Roosevelt, was intoxicated at the time of the accident. He was placed under arrest. Nolasco is charged with Vehicular Manslaughter 2nd Degree, Manslaughter 2nd Degree and DWI. He will be arraigned when medically practical. The investigation is ongoing.
Town officials, including Receiver Jeff Pravato, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca, Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Councilwoman Laura Maier and Councilwoman Michele Johnson, show a sampling of the more than three tons of oyster shells collected at last year’s Oyster Festival, which are recycled back into the waterways to improve water quality and help with growth of new shellfish. The Town of Oyster Bay is looking for volunteers who want to help the environment and preserve local waterways to take part in the Town’s shell recycling initiative at the upcoming Oyster Festival, taking place Saturday and Sunday, October 19
and 20, in Oyster Bay. “We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to be a vital part of our environmental mission to help protect our harbor and improve our waterways,” explained Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “As a Shell Col-
