Water District working to identify lead piping
As a result of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) change to its Lead and Copper Rule, the Hicksville water District (HWD) has launched a new Lead and Copper Updates page on its website, which can be found at www.hicksvillewater.org/news/leadand-copper-updates. The changes to the rule, which were announced on December 16, 2021, are meant to ensure that any existing lead service line in the country is removed and replaced by the end of 2025. The HWD’s new website page helps residents to identify the material of their service line and whether or not it may contain lead or lead components. “While all of the water distributed by the Hicksville Water District is routinely tested for lead and surpasses all established water quality standards, we need to make sure that the same is true of all private home service lines,” said HWD Chairman Nicholas Brigandi. “When residents self-certify their lead service lines, it enables us to take action and make the necessary replacements. We ask that any residents who may have lead service lines take advantage of this vital new resource as soon as possible.” One of the most important aspects of the new page is the Service Line Self-Certification Results survey. Based on decades of working in the community and the inventory of data acquired on installed service lines, the HWD is believes that, if there are any lead service lines remaining within the District, they are few and far between. However, 100 percent confidence is needed, so it is crucial that residents who may have lead service lines participate in this data collection effort through the online survey. This will provide the District with an accurate record of all lead service lines in the area and thus help ensure each individual home’s water quality. The HWD’s new website page aims to make the self-certification process as easy as possible. Residents will find visual aids on how to identify the types of pipes in the service lines, informational videos about lead service lines, a lead FAQ and step-by-step instructions on how to use a free homeowner lead and copper test to determine whether or not a service line is made of lead. It is crucial that every lead service line is on record, so the HWD strongly encourages residents to take part in this simple yet incredibly important survey process.
