Town places thousands of clams in waterways

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino (second from right) and Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz recently joined the town environmental team to place 25,000 adult clam shells into Town waterways. The Town of Oyster Bay recently placed 25,000 adult clams into Town waterways. These clams complement the millions of baby seedlings that the Town plants throughout the year after growing them out in the shellfish hatchery. “Our shellfish planting program not only helps enhance water quality, it bolsters the local economy and helps improve the resiliency of our

coastal communities,” said Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “Shellfish are essential to our waters and local marine environment, as they filter water through their feeding mechanisms.” Throughout the year, officials work in cooperation with environmental experts to identify appropriate areas where seeds and adult shellfish will thrive and spawn. Wheth-

er planting clams or oysters, proper bay bottom substrate is sought out to ensure optimal growth. “This wonderful initiative not only preserves water quality and natural beauty of our waterways, it helps to strengthen the local economy and keep our waters clean for generations to come,” said Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz.

Syosset Woodbury Jericho Chamber President Russell P. Green thanked the owners of Jericho Cider Mill — father and son Ted and Kerry Ketsoglou — and their team members, Valerie and Kayla, for hosting last week’s networking event. Green noted, “The chamber recently added Jericho to our organization, and the Jericho Cider Mill was a great location to kick off the merging of three great hamlets.” Kerry Ketsoglou is also well known around the Town of Oyster Bay as chief of the Jericho Fire Department. His father, Ted, mentioned the former Jericho Chamber of Commerce, which launched a few years ago but was unable to sustain activities and attract members. “I am excited to join, and eager to meet more people from Syosset, Woodbury and our Jericho neighbors. My son and I have owned Jericho Cider Mill for the last 12 years, and we’ve changed the store around some since its first opening in 1820. We have one of the oldest businesses in the Town of Oyster Bay, and the history through these walls is unbelievable. Our pies are made fresh upstairs on our second floor, and we enjoy

welcoming people from all over – NYC and eastern Long Island. We hear the stories of people bringing their grandchildren, and this little farmhouse on Rt. 106 produces many amazing products,” he said. Ted noted that by the end of August, freshly picked apples and jugs of cider will be ready for customers. Syosset Woodbury Jericho Chamber Membership Chairman and two-time Businessperson of the Year Alan Goldberg shared his thoughts on the expansion of the chamber since last year. He said Jericho businesses, including Waxing the City, Chamber Board member Dr. Parul Makkar’s dental office and, most recently, the Jericho Cider Mill team, are providing momentum and support. “Word is getting out throughout the Jericho business community that they’re now included with the neighboring communities, Syosset and Woodbury, as a single and united chamber of commerce,” Goldberg said. “As word spreads, more Jericho businesses are applying to our nearly 250 member organization.
