Following a resident’s public comments in front of the Oyster Bay Town Board at the Tuesday, September 12 meeting at Town Hall, the TOBAY Highway Department was directed to conduct a safety study of traffic from he new Amazon fulfillment center on Robbins Lane. The Amazon facility is on the former Cerro Wire property. The Board heard from Jericho resident Robin Grossman, who in 2018 and years earlier advocated against the proposed development of the Syosset Park housing and mall on the Cerro Wire site. Before attending the September 12 Board meeting Grossman contacted both the Town’s Highway Department and Signage office. She spoke about concerns involving traffic for Amazon in the areas nearest to Robbins Lane and Jericho Turnpike. In front of the Board, Grossman presented a map of the circulation of Amazon fulfillment center traffic – both the cars of employees and private vehicles that people use for Amazon delivery work, as well as Amazon company vehicles and its larger box trucks and blue vans. “Amazon just does not seem to have its employees follow the company’s traffic rules for the site. We have Robbins Lane, north to south and vice versa – with a painted line that goes for the two right-hand turn lanes.
One is at a traffic light, and one righthand turn lane with painted arrows is closest to the LIRR tracks (designed to enter into the Amazon property). I have recorded several hours and days of videos and photos with Amazon vehicles of all kinds, actually coming from north and going south on Robbins Lane – making a left-hand turn into the property. In order to make that left, they actually overshoot the curved curb at the entrance and then turn into the right-hand turn only lane. They are not supposed to be doing this!” Grossman explained. She said that on Monday, September 11 a video she recorded shows that one Amazon truck exited the same part of the road and made a lefthand turn (illegally, across traffic). Grossman told the board that maneuver violated not only the local traffic laws but on the Amazon property, there is a sign advising motorists “Do Not Enter” from the way the truck went forward. Town Council member Laura L. Maier asked for a clarification for where the Amazon workers or delivery persons are supposed to enter the facility. Grossman presented the entrances from the map she provided, and the Board reviewed the entrances and exits with no alternative entrances from the LIE Service Road. Grossman continued to make her See page 12
